Full textThis thesis presents and analyses the role of religion in the insurgency in the south of Thailand, that is sometimes labelled terrorism. By using theories on nation building and nationalism, religion as a cultural identity and theories on globalisation and terrorism, this thesis shows that it cannot be concluded that religion is the sole problem of the insurgency in the south of Thailand. This thesis, in addition, shows that religion is political and a source of identity and that neither religious terrorism nor religious nationalism have to imply religious belief, since religion can be a marker of cultural belonging, among many things.

period Alevis felt themselves more free and relieved and with this sense they started to claim more rights and freedoms. The most important and unexpected consequence of the period for the Alevis is the need for an identification of Aleviness. When Alevis realized the distance they have with Aleviness, they did not adopt different definitions of Aleviness made from different positions. Other identities of Alevis determine what kind of an Aleviness they would become. Nevertheless, while the variety of Aleviness understandings has increased, common points of different approaches have decreased. While Islamic Alevism which is one of the projects aiming at becoming hegemonic tries to sustain the tradition
the other one, Political Alevism refers to pressures and assaults of the past. As long as the Alevi elites can generate projects of Alevism which would encapsulate the tradition but differentiate itself from Islam and does not contradict with secularism
which could renew the traditional leadership

Full textUnga muslimer i Sverige kan via Internet möta muslimsk kultur och genom mediet känna gemenskap med andra muslimer. Att förena två kulturer är inte alltid enkelt och här kan svenska islamiska webbsidor vara till hjälp. I studien undersöks fem sådana webbplatser utifrån innehåll och utseende genom observationer och textanalyser. Innehållet på sidorna skildrar hur det kan vara för en muslim att växa upp i Sverige, men interaktiviteten och möjligheten till att träffa likasinnade som är karaktäristiskt för Internet som medium saknas. Studien visar att webbplatserna främst tillhandahåller information om islam på olika sätt men att interaktivitet inte främjas.

Full textAtt skolan är mångkulturell i dagens Sverige, är nog de flesta medvetna om. Islam är den näst största religionen i världen och i Sverige. Syftet med undersökningen är hur ramadan påverkar situationen i skolan bland lärare och elever. Undersökningen är gjord på en högstadieskola i Skåne där en stor andel av eleverna har föräldrar med utländsk härkomst. Jag har valt att göra kvalitativa intervjuer för att respondenterna skulle få möjlighet till att utveckla mer djupgående tankar kring ämnet. Resultatet visade att samtliga lärare i studien upplevde att ramadan orsakade problem i olika situationer i skolan. Resultatet visade även brister i skolledningens sätt att hantera situationer kring ramadan. Skolledningen har det övergripande ansvaret när det gäller att agera för att ge förutsättningar och riktlinjer för lärare i olika ämnen i undervisningen. Ramadan är av stor betydelse för eleverna i undersökningen. Av resultatet framgick även att flertalet av lärarna inte hade någon kontakt med föräldrarna vad det gällde situationerna kring ramadan. Resultatet visade att svensklärarna ansåg att eleverna inte borde genomföra fastan under grundskolan.

Full textThe power of knowledge is great, but when used wrong it becomes disastrous. Prevailing discourses produce knowledge about Muslims where Muslim men are depicted as violent and where Muslim women often become a symbol of oppression. These stereotypes contribute to that Muslims are victims of intolerance, harassment and discrimination in Sweden.The purpose of this study is to highlight young Muslim women's religious identity in order to modulate the stigmatized images that there are about Muslim women. By using a qualitative method with interview as technique, this study presents religion from an individual perspective and how religious people feel about their religiosity in relation to a society where secularism is a strong norm. Interviews were made with six young women from different parts of Southern of Sweden and the result show that the women has a strong religiosity but also that islamophobia and xenophobia is something that all of the informants, in some way or another had encountered. In order to oppose xenophobia and Islamophobia, it is also required that schools presents an opposite picture of Islam than the often stereotypical representation that prevails in society. The religious education in schools is a forum where we can create an understanding for religious individuals and an empathetic attitude to all fellow human beings. By showing the different lifestyles and ways of finding meaning, students can gain the tools to "broaden their horizons" and understand that we are all different and it is that which make us the same.

This PhD dissertation examines the reconstruction of identity which was engendered by the collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union and the introduction of globalization in Post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, whose population is majority Sunnī Muslim, belonging to the Ḥanafī school of Islamic law. The question of the strategy of actors in rearticulating identities in Kyrgyzstan centers on the relationship between the religious and the political realms, and their redefinition. In order to analyze the nature and role of religiosity in the Kyrgyz socio-political scene, the dissertation considers the triangulation of state, religion, and society through three main hypotheses: (1) the use of religion, at the political level, to reenchant the political order which has been in search of a new legitimacy after the collapse of Communism; (2) the use of religion, at the local level, to redistribute and redefine “meaning” in a society dislocated by the brutal social changes accompanying the collapse of this former Soviet Republic – specifically the recourse to Islam to reestablish the social contract by redefining normative social values and competing socio-political legitimacies; and (3) the use of the religion of Islam in the Kyrgyz context to redefine politics and establish a new political order

how these women who lost their sons, as a woman and a mother define and express themselves and their experiences after martyrdom. Before their sons are martyrized, these women were ordinary housewives, with the death of their sons, they get a new identity: being a mother of a martyr. In this thesis, it is examined that what being a mother of a martyr means for these women. Moreover, this study attempts to examine certain perceptions and assumptions of these women about nationalism, the state, religion, war and peace after martyrdom. For this aim, this study is based on interviews with mothers who do not realize that they virtually live in a war, on motherhood, war, politics, and peace. Therefore, this research is the study to grasp how discourses of nationalism and religion shape this new identity: being a mother of a martyr. While these women were ordinary housewives before martyrdom, after their sons&rsquo
death, their narratives as mothers of martyrs are cultivated by discourses of nationalism and religion. Consequently, is it possible for these mothers to develop an anti-war discourse as happened for examples in the world?

Full textFor a long time, I have had an interest in Islam in Iran. To be able to learn more and understand this subject, I will analyze the novel Het huis van der moskee (The House by the Mosque, my translation) by Kader Abdolah, which takes place in Iran during the time of the Islamic revolution of 1978-79. I will study the importance of religion to a few of the characters, and how this changes during the course of the revolution. To do this, I will begin by studying the varying functions of religion, as well as the religious and political history of Iran. In the analysis I will discuss three characters who represent three different approaches to religion: inner spirituality, religion as a way towards acceptance and violent religious oppression.

Full textThe fact that islam confirms the intimate ling between the spiritual and the temporal necessarily results, according to the islamists, in an overall vision of man and society. Following this stream, one can't analyse notions of social organization, of justice, of the econolic and social vision of islam without reference to the meaning of the world or the relation fo man to god. This is indicative of a radically different perception of islam in comparison to the modern trend (which is imitative of western thinking). The merit due to some islamist thinkers is that widened the debate to the philosophical field. Contrary to the modernists, they raised new issues and opened new avenues of exploration. It is within this view that the contemporary muslim thinking suggets, in order to define the attitude of islam facing materialism and idealism, the notion of equilibrium between matter and spirit, between temporal and spiritual. One must demonstrate how can a religion which develops an extraordinary feeling of devine transcendance, give importance to the relationships of man to society and man to the world

Full textTandis que la plupart des études sur l'Afrique de l'ouest ont concentré sur l'étendu et le caractère de l'Islam soufi, il y a eu une transformation dramatique récente dans son influence politique et sociale. Les forces de la globalisation et de changement social et économique ont abouti dans des transformations parallèles en Afrique de l'ouest et ailleurs et partout dans le monde islamique. Dans le Ghana du nord, ou l'Islam soufi a été longtemps la forme dominante de la pratique religieuse et la politique, un nouveau forme de l'Islam plus orthodoxe a surgi qui n'a pas encore reçu suffisamment d'attention,. Une explication pour cette désaccord est le fait que l'étude de l'Islam africain a été dominé par les notions orientalistes et réductives d'un Islam africain statique, dépourvu d'histoire et décontextualisé des changements sociales et économiques importantes.qui ont eu un impact sur l'Afrique de l'ouest. En plus, le biais envers l'étude de l'Islam politique dans le Moyen Orient et l'Asie du sud a eu pour résultat que de rares chercheurs ont abordés les transformations importantes dans l'Islam ouest-africain qui sont enracinées localement mais liées sans doute au monde islamique en générale. Ma thèse vise à combler cette lacune dans la littérature sur le sujet par une examen des facteurs qui ont contribué au déclin de la soufisme et l'essor d'une vision nouvelle Wahhabie de l'islamisation dans deux domaines clefs -- l'éducation et la politique -- au niveau de l'état.Dans le Ghana du nord, les soufis ont traditionnellement représenté la classe religieuse ou dominante, comme ailleurs dans l'Afrique musulmane. Néanmoins, pendant les trois dernières décades, il y avait une réduction distincte dans le pouvoir politique et l'influence sociale du soufisme et une influence élargie correspondante sur la part de l'Islam Wahhabi. Malgré la manque d'attention, le soufisme en Ghana du nord a été éclipse par ce dernier, particulièrement dans les domaines de l'éducation et la politique – les deux champs d'intérêt capital pour le présent travail.Quels sont donc les facteurs qui peuvent expliquer cette transformation évidente dans le Ghana du nord? Ceci est la question de recherche principale de la présente thèse. Afin de répondre à la question, j'ai entrepris des investigations approfondies sur le terrain en Ghana du nord pour juger entre un bon nombre d'explications alternatives. Cela m'a permis d'analyser empiriquement les raisons et les concours de facteurs qui ont mené à cette transformation religieuse et sociale surprenante en Ghana du nord. Naturellement, ces explications ne s'exclurent pas forcément. Néanmoins, ma thèse scrute l'évidence pour chaque ligne d'argument et fait un choix entre les facteurs les plus importants qui ont contribué à la montée du « nouveau Islam » en Ghana du nord. Je soutiens que l'ascension du Wahhabisme là bas est en grande partie le résultat de changements politiques et socio-économiques qui sont spécifiques au lieu. C'est-à-dire, tout en admettant le rôle de liens internationaux dans la popularité courante de l'activisme Wahhabie, je montre dans ce mémoire que le rôle de la politique des partis et la contestation électorale dans les décades récentes étaient déterminants au succès du Wahhabisme en Ghana du nord. De plus, en bâtissant sur des recherches originales entreprises sur le terrain, je montre empiriquement que cette tendance vers une notion plus orthodoxe d'identification islamique et de pratique politique est décisivement enraciné dans les manières dans lesquelles les adeptes du Wahhabisme ont influencé, voire dominé, les institutions éducatrices nouvelles dans le Ghana du nord

Mediante una presentación del estado de la cuestión de la literatura académica correspondiente, el análisis doctrinal, histórico y comparativo del desarrollo de la percepción y uso de los medios por parte de cada una de las tres tradiciones religiosas, y mediante el análisis de las consecuencias geopolíticas que implica tal percepción y uso, el trabajo de investigación busca ofrecer una posible nueva tendencia dentro del área académica de «Media, Religión y Cultura» incluyendo, no solo el cómo las tradiciones religiosas específicas utilizan y perciben los medios de comunicación a partir de los principios religiosos que las determinan, sino también las consecuencias geopolíticas que conlleva tal percepción y uso de los medios.
This PhD thesis proposes an approach between the area of communication studies called «Media, Religion and Culture» and the study of globalization and geopolitics regarding the three religious traditions derived from the Abrahamitic cosmovision, that is, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Through a presentation of the state of the art of the main academic literature, a doctrinal, historical and_ comparative analysis of the development and framing of the different media within each of the three religious traditions, and through an analysis of the geopolitical consequences that such fraiming entails, the research work aims at offering a possible new trend of study within the «Media, Religion and Cultural» academic area including, not only how specific religious traditions use and understand media according to the religious principles that determine them, but also the geopolitical consequences that such a use an understanding involve.

Full textThe issues of immigration, integration policies and the role of religion in French society are regularly being discussed in response to cases in the news and media events. Although part of general research on crime and the religious factor, this study focuses more precisely on Muslims and the influence of their religion on social integration and crime. Based on more than one hundred interviews, the aim of this work is to measure the impact of France’s second biggest religion on its followers: Does Islam contribute to avoid resorting to crime or is it the opposite? Does Islam foster social cohesion with the rest of French society or is the contrary?

Full textIn contemporary Roussillon, Catalan, French and European identities crisscross and intermingle, marking their footprints on the same territory and in the ordinary life of the local population. The emergence of Muslim religiosity within a society structured around a regional identity, catalyses internal debates among European nation-states. Europe is redefined by local interactions whereby Muslims experience a still undecided Catalan acculturation. Through the articulation of qualitative (ethnography) and quantitative (questionnaire) methods, this new study provides abundant empirical material, drawing a fairly comprehensive portrait of Muslims in French Catalonia whose identity proves to be extraordinarily complex. Beyond any reification, the phenomenon of identity is here conceived as a flow, which is apprehended through a system modeling of the relationship between Islamity and Catalanity
En el Rosselló contemporània, les identitats català, francès i europeu es barregen i s’entrellacen, marcant les seves empremtes en mateix territori i en la vida quotidiana de la població local. El sorgiment de la religiositat musulmana en una societat estructurada entorn d'una identitat regional, s’illustra com un catalitzador per al debat intern als Estats-nació europeus. Europa s’ha redefinit per les interaccions a nivell local on els musulmans estan experimentant aculturació català encara no està decidit. A través de l’articulació dels mètodes qualitatius (etnografia) i quantitatius (qüestionari), aquest nou estudi proporciona una abundant material empíric, formant una imatge relativament completa dels musulmans de Catalunya francesa, la identitat resulta ser de gran complexitat. Full textDebatten om islam och muslimer kretsar kring en postkolonial diskursordning som aktualiseras genom den orientaliska, essentiella och eurocentriska diskursen. Under perioden 030601-040101 är en distinktion mellan Occidenten och Orienten tydlig när islam och muslimer kommer på tal i DN och Expressens krönikor och debattsidor. Muslimer framställs genom dessa diskurser som ett hot mot svenska och europeiska värderingar och borde således hållas på avstånd. Den muslimska kvinnan presenteras som förtryckt och oförmögen att kunna frigöra sig utan hjälp utifrån. Slöjan och andra muslimska kvinnors klädesplagg tillskrivs politiska värderingar och betraktas som någonting påtvingad. Islam framställs som en religion oförenlig med demokratiska värderingar och som sammanfaller med terrorism och fanatism. Även antisemitism beskrivs som en muslimsk företeelse. Islam i media presenteras, till skillnad från andra religioner, som en ideologisk och politisk rörelse och inte som en personlig andlig tro. I debatten om islams roll i Sverige och Europa har en perspektivförskjutning skett från det reella till doktrin, där muslimer avhumaniserats som individer och tillskrivits en kollektiv identitet.

Full textThis research is concerned with the relationship between society and religion in Kabylia with reference to the tradional trend and the reformist movement. The study further explores the changes in the areas which fall under the sway of reformist movement. For example, we wanted to question issue of Kabyle éducation in the first half of 20th Century. In this repect, the first thirteen chapters have been extended to two others chapters. These two chapters highlith the political struggles and Identity protest in Kabylia and focus on the intellectual and cultural elites who led them in the period between 1940 and 2001. This additional part is tightly linked to the other chapters as it extends the bounds between local and global issues, involving the crisis of modernity and the effects of modernization, and last, the nature of relationship between individual and his own self. Beside, we wanted to raise and treat the issue of social and political mediations starting from the analyis of recent and recurring protests in Kabylia

Full textReligion som ett maktmedel är en aktuell företeelse i USA, där människor utnyttjas och vilseleds med manipulerande och religiösa guider som gärna visare dem deras väg till det religiösa livet och dess belöningar. Men vägen dit kostar, både människoliv och pengar. I den religiösa maktutövningen påverkas ett helt folkslag, amerikanarna, eftersom de lever i en värld där kapitalism, politik och det sociala blir till ett och influerar alla samhällskikt, till att till slut bli ett särdrag i USA. Syftet är att framställa detta med hjälp av frågeställningen;
hur används religionen som ett maktmedel i USA?
Det kommer att belysas; hur man använder sig av medel som rädsla, tradition, politik, meningssökande med mera för att rekrytera amerikanen till att bli religiös, för att skapa sig en egen förmögenhet eller sitt egna religiösa imperium. Med en tillräckligt god retorisk förmåga och en karismatisk utstrålning kan auktoritära personer i USA påverka och influera - personer, samhället och grupperingar - med hjälp av religionen, för egennyttiga ändamål. Detta är enkelt för kritikern att se, men tyvärr inte för den religiöse amerikanen som lever mitt i det.
Vidare finner man att detta grundas i en inbyggd religiös mentalitet som härleds från gamla tider och att det amerikanska samhället är uppbyggt på detta, vilket sedan kan användas som ett maktmedel. Man kan konstatera att VI och DE fenomenet är en avsevärd och viktig komponent i detta maktspelet och är även amerikanens rädsla, mer eller mindre. Individen vill inte hamna utanför samhället som det socialiserats in i och är därför präglad av detta och kan därmed identifiera sig utefter det. Detta blir således ett tillstånd i vilket amerikanen finner sin trygghet, vilket oftast är en religiös sådan.

Full textIf the links between food and religion have weakened in a secularized world, feeding practices are still a marker of identity and attachment to "God". With this in mind, we are interested in the emergence of a consumption of halal products by Berber Moroccan migrants and their descendants living in Moselle.Our project is a desire to use this consumption through a legacy of both family, cultural and political trajectory that is specific for each actor. Eating Halal is discussed here in terms of a religious fact with multiple dimensions, both collective, material, symbolic and significant. If eating halal refers to dietary laws specific to Islam religious system, this practice does not explain why an individual meets a requirement, a prohibition. Drawing on the approaches of Michel de Certeau, Jean-Noël Ferrié and Saba Mahmood, we show how an individual, through the incorporation, embodies faith and built its membership. Far from appearing as an essentialization of feeding practices, eating halal produces new types of eaters for whom the believe is a technique designed to create for the actor a capability of agency and reflexivity
