Abstract:
During recent years, empirical trust research has significantly advanced our understanding about the interdependencies of social and political trust. This progress can mostly be attributed to major improvements of measurement instruments in survey research. Research on the causes of both forms of trust have examined the top-down approach of trust building, which places importance on fair and impartial political institutions, such as the police and judiciary, as well as societal accounts of trust building that relate to the role of social networks and parents as well as perceptions of inequality. While there is a modest relationship between social forms of trust and political forms of trust, research has not entirely disentangled the flow of causality between the two. Recent insights into contextual and individual-level covariates of social and political trust may hold answers regarding future developments and political and societal consequences.

Abstract:
The widespread perception at home and abroad is that Germany is Europe’s economic superstar: its economy is booming, and its economic and social policies have been impeccable. But there is a flip side to this success: Germany’s economy has fundamental weaknesses, and its economic policies have serious flaws. This chapter identifies the substantial and growing public and private investment gap in Germany as the main source of weakness and vulnerability in the German economy and discusses the measurement and origin of this investment gap, as well as its sectoral and regional distribution. In addition, the chapter explains why weak public investment is a key reason for low private investment, identifies those areas and sectors in which the investment gap is largest, and offers policy recommendations on how to close Germany’s investment gap and, thus, help solve the key economic weaknesses of the country.

Abstract:
To understand how people experience diversity, researchers have focused on category-based perceptions of others who belong to different social groups and the subsequent impact on intergroup dynamics. Specifically, scholars have focused on the automaticity of such categorizations, including stereotyping and implicit bias. This chapter will discuss these automatic, nonconscious processes, including their antecedents and their association with and effects on individual, group, and organizational outcomes. Given the automaticity of such processes, measurement strategies and suggestions for their use in future research will also be discussed.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 examines wealth and income distribution in Athens. It argues that understanding Athenian poverty depends not just on the perceptions of the literary elite, but on combining and critiquing various measurements of poverty drawn from the social sciences. By deliberately eschewing ancient categories of poverty, and using instead modern sociological ones, this chapter asks what proportion of the Athenian population might be considered poor, how poor they were, how big a gap there was between the richest and poorest, and how this might have changed over time.

Abstract:
Despite its early struggles to survive, openness is now recognized as a personality trait with far-reaching consequences. This chapter is an overview of how individual differences in cognitive flexibility, sensitivity to aesthetics, depth of feeling, and preference for novelty contribute to important domains of functioning. Briefly reviewed will be conceptualizations of openness, some measurement considerations, and where it fits within the nomological net of related constructs. The chapter is then devoted to the nature and consequences of openness, arranged from the biological to the societal. Research on the biological roots of openness and its developmental trajectory from early childhood through old age are then covered. Also considered is how openness contributes to nearly every aspect of functioning, including health and well-being, employment, person presentation and perception, marriage and family, and its geographic implications.

Abstract:
While political network research is often a holistic enterprise, the network paradigm can also be used to study individual behavior. Specifically, rather than focusing on full network structures, a well-established area of research considers individuals’ “core” networks, their perceptions of interpersonal connections, and the consequences of said micro-social environments for myriad political outcomes and processes. This chapter examines this research tradition, tracing the history of its use in the study of political behavior. It begins with discussion of network research, paying specific attention to “egocentric” network name generator techniques. It then outlines several challenges to this research paradigm: (1) the difficulty of making causal inferences, (2) debates over concept and measurement, and (3) questions about mechanisms of influence. The chapter concludes by reviewing advances in the field that have developed from these challenges and points toward next steps in this research agenda, focused on the connected citizenry.
