Full text
Abstract:
The thesis mainly scrutinizes the evolution of European Social Dimension from the early period of the European integration to the Lisbon Summit of 2000 and the formation of the draft EU Constitution in 2003. While the focus is on the changing role of social policy at the European Union level during the period of welfare state transformation, the thesis tries to lay down the normative and discursive linkages constructed between the concepts of European Social Model and the Social Market Economy. Subsequent to the inquiry made into the theoretical foundations of the Social Market Economy and its practice in Germany, the thesis discusses how diverse European actors employ the concept, which is ambiguous in nature, as a comprehensive framework within which a European political identity that may be constructed around European Social Model could be grounded.

Aylott, Jill. "Developing a social understanding of autism through the 'social model'." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2003. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19299/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to design an innovative research methodology to engage young people with a label of 'autism', in the research process. Advancement in the creation of a new and innovative research methodology made it possible for 11 young people to communicate with the researcher about what was important to them as they went through adolescence. 'Barriers' to inclusion in the research process were challenged by developing, practical ways to de-code and translate complex communication systems through the design of a 'communication profile'. Engaging young people with a label of 'autism' in a way that enables them to lead and direct the research process is new and challenges traditional research assumptions. It also challenges traditional research methods used with people with a label of Teaming difficulties' and questions the validity of 'researcher led' narrative. Utilising a more democratic process of 'inclusive' research methodology led to the findings that young people with a label of 'autism' are disabled by 'barriers' within wider society rather than by their perceived 'impairments'. The disabling barriers evident from this research were physical barriers (in relation the physical environment); support barriers (in relation to interpersonal relationships and support); and information barriers (the way information causes disabling barriers if it is not presented in ways that enables understanding). The findings significantly challenged current and past theories of autism and questioned the 'truth' in the 'knowledge' ascertained from positivist research methodologies. Listening to the collective 'voice' of young people with a label of 'autism', urges a move away from a reductionist explanation of 'impairment', to embrace the wider holistic explanation of autism as 'disability'. To advance the continuation of participation in research, this research study calls for a 'paradigm shift' in research methodology, to move away from 'positivist' research methodologies to advancing an 'emancipatory disability research' agenda. This research also calls for the inclusion of people with a label of 'autism' to become engaged in the wider 'social model of disability' debate and to become included as part of the wider disabled people's movement.

Nall, Gregory Allen. "An alternative model of chimpanzee social structure, with implications for phylogenetic models of stem-hominid social structure." Virtual Press, 1992. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/845924.

Full text
Abstract:
The following research paper was concerned with five basic objectives:(1) outlining the major theoretical and methodological approaches used in the reconstruction of early hominid social behavior/social structure as a context in which to view Richard Wrangham's and Michael Ghiglieri's phylogenetic models of stem-hominid social structure.(2) examining Wrangham's and Ghiglieri's models of stem-hominid and chimpanzee social structure.(3) indicating how theoretical and methodological aspects of structure essentially represent an extension of the theoretical and methodological approaches the same researchers applied to their models of chimpanzee social structure.(4) addressing the theoretical and methodological deficiences of Wrangham's and Ghiglieri's models of chimpanzee social structure.(5) providing suggestions for improved phylogenetic models of early hominid social structure. The first objective was achieved by: (a) reviewing Tooby and Devore's (1986) and Wrangham's (1986) evaluations of the major theoretical approaches and methodologies used in the reconstruction of hominid social behavior/structure (b) defining, classifying and evaluating Wrangham's and Ghiglieri's phylogenetic approaches within this context. The second objective was accomplished by outlining, analyzing, and comparing/contrasting Wrangham's and Ghiglieri's phylogenetic models of stem-hominid social structure (i.e.Wrangham 1986; Ghiglieri 1987, 1989) and Wrangham's and Ghiglieri's models of chimpanzee social structure (i.e. Wrangham 1975, 1979; Ghiglieri 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989).The third objective was achieved by recognizing how Wrangham and Ghiglieri used/stressed principles and concepts derived from evolutionary biology and/or behavioral ecology to develop their models of stem-hominid and chimpanzee social structure. This analysis showed that Wrangham's models of social structure were more favorably inclined toward the method of behavioral ecology than Ghiglieri's models, which favored a sociobiological paradigm. Furthermore, although neither researcher relied exclusively on the above theoretical approaches, the main thrust of their argument often centered around it. For instance, Wrangham's analysis of chimpanzee social structure (Wrangham 1975, 1979) indicated that the ultimate cause of that structure was ecological i.e., patchy food distribution leads to wide female dispersal for optimal foraging efficiency, which in turn favors a male kin breeding group that can maintain a territority that includes several individual female ranges. In contrast, Wrangham's phylogenetic model of the social structure of the stem-hominid (Wrangham, 1986) suggested that phylogenetic inertia may be partially responsible for the shared social features found among African Hominoidea. However, in the same work, Wrangham also suggested that further socioecological analysis of African apes may indicate whether food distribution and its effects on female dispersion/association may partially explain conservative African ape social features.Ghiglieri's phylogenetic model of the stem-hominid (1987, 1989), on the other hand, explained the conservative social features of bonobos, common chimpanzees, and hominids to be primarily a product of phylogenetic inertia and sexual selection. Furthermore, for Ghiglieri the most important sexual selection variable was a male communal reproductive strategy. This, according to Ghiglieri, is the ultimate cause of social structure. Notably, Ghiglieri (1984, 1985) had earlier stressed the overiding importance of a male communal reproductive strategy but was less dogmatic in his insistence that chimpanzees had essentially solved their ecological problems (e.g. that they had solved the food distribution problem by fusion-fission sociality; predators were never a real problem). Nevertheless, Ghiglieri's earlier position similarily expressed the idea that a communal reproductive strategy constituted the ultimate cause of social structure. The fourth objective was accomplished by presentation of an alternative model of chimpanzee social behavior which suggested that structure; the effect of phylogenetic inertia on social structure; chimpanzee social structure is the combined product of ecological and sexual selection forces: female optimal foraging, male mating strategies, and predator pressure. The model was considered by the author to be unique in that it integrated essential aspects of both Wrangham's and Ghiglieri's models and, in addition, provided support for Alexander's (1974) contention that predation pressure is an ultimate cause of ape social structure. The model also outlined scenarios for the evolution of chimpanzee group._ extensibility (fusion-fission sociality) and the capacity for warfare among chimpanzees. The last objective was achieved by a discussion of the implications that the author's model had for phylogenetic models of stem-hominid social structure. In this discussion the author reviewed the following issues as they related to the phylogenetic reconstruction of hominid social structure: the role of phylogeny and/or ecology in the causation of social encountered when using a phylogenetic referential model for the personal biases that enter into phylogenetic econstructions; pitfalls reconstruction of early hominid social evolution; the significance of chimpanzee models of social structure. The importance of the preceding study lay in its ability to stimulate improved conceptual models of African hominoid social structure.

Abstract:
The French temperance movement during the nineteenth century believed that it had discovered the source of social problems when it linked accidents, conjugal violence and crime to an increase in alcohol consumption by the working classes. In a swift attempt to curb these societal ills, the campaign led by the medical community targeted the working classes in France. This instigated the further alienation of the masses and allowed government officials to promote its own agenda of moral reform. In an effort to expose the elitist intentions of this state run temperance movement, this thesis analyzes four images from Camille Pissarro's unpublished album, Turpitudes Sociales of 1889, which represent similar imagery but with an opposite message. I will analyze these images from Pissarro's unpublished work in order to shed light on his incorporation of class relations and depiction of the bourgeoisie's negative impact on the French working classes.

FORSTROM, MARTIN DYLAN. "CUBAN SOCIALISM: A MODEL OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/612936.

Full text
Abstract:
As the only developed country with a mostly publicly-owned and centrally-planned economy, sociological study of Cuba offers profound opportunities for theoretical and practical consideration of the viability of that model. Hitherto unseen levels of support for socialism among Americans and a renewed European Left in the wake of the Great Recession and worsening human-caused climate change provide a context of renewed interest. Cuba’s geographic location, high standard of living, ethnic/racial diversity, and relative cultural liberalism, further, make it the uniquely best-suited counterexample to the “end of history” model of (neo)liberal democratic consensus. While limited, partial analyses of the Cuban system abound, attempts to synthesize this information and meaningfully address its unique development of the Marxist-Leninist single-party state as a legitimate form of society are nearly nonexistent. I will argue that the system’s survival and significant adaptations from its past as a Soviet client state warrant a second look as a viable alternative type of social organization. A review and synthesis of the social scientific literature in addition to notions of democracy and attempts to quantify utilitarian function like Happy Planet Index demonstrates that, more so than untested models, the Cuban one presents a viable if very imperfect example of equitable sustainability.

Collinson, Craig. "Lexism : beyond the social model of dyslexia." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2017. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/9888/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis a new concept called ‘Lexism’ (the Othering and discrimination of dyslexics) is proposed, outlined and defended. The dyslexia debate is currently in a state of deadlock. The origin of this stalemate is not an empirical problem but a conceptual one. The conceptual problems with dyslexia, and the existence of dyslexics, are both recognised, but the contradictions between them remain unresolved. For this reason a philosophical approach (influenced by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Gilbert Ryle) has been adopted. First, the conceptual foundations are set out to enable the recognition of Lexism as a concept, and to reject the concept of dyslexia whilst recognising the existence of dyslexics. Second, Lexism as a concept, is evaluated, compared and contrasted with what some might consider to be the strongest existing account of dyslexics’ social experiences, that of Riddick’s (2001) social model of dyslexia. Third, the key aspects and features of Lexism as a new concept are set out. The original contribution to knowledge is that Lexism enables us to see that dyslexics are defined by Lexism not dyslexia. Lexism, it is argued, in a certain sense, is comparable to, though not the same as, racism, sexism and homophobia. This enables us break the current deadlock and move away from sterile debates over dyslexia’s existence, to how dyslexics are Othered by a literate society. Lexism raises new and significant implications for the dyslexia debate, but also government policy, educational practice, assessments and reasonable adjustments for dyslexics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As more schools turn to School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) for help with academic and problem behaviors in their schools, the need to adequately evaluate these programs on a socially relevant level increases. The present study employs social validation measures to evaluate Utah's Academic, Behavioral & Coaching Initiative (ABC-UBI), a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) initiative, on socially relevant issues. Participants from across the state of Utah who were active consumers of ABC-UBI's program, were polled for their opinion on the acceptability of the treatment goals, procedures and outcomes of the program. The results outlined several areas of much needed improvement including, but not limited to the amount of paperwork required for successful implementation and the usability of program procedures. Social validity continues to be an important construct to consider when evaluating programs for social relevancy.

Abstract:
Modern most wargaming models are a simulation of large force-on-force conflicts, and are not capable of articulating social factors of the society being modeled. The Green Country Model (GCM) was established as a two-player wargame utilizing unconventional and irregular warfare tactics, taking in consideration the effects of social factors on the population and stability operations of the regions (winning the hearts and minds of a society). The game is not meant to offer predictions for a course of action or the impact of a course of action on the future, but to provide players, particularly those players who are leaders, a forum in which to discuss strategy, tactics and possible courses of action, thus improving the knowledge base and ability to think outside the box concerning various regions. Utilizing the concepts, input parameters, and underlying algorithms established by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, we build a simulation model to begin the validation process of the GCM. This model, which can run one action in thousandths of a second, will not only provide developers a framework for continued validation, but can provide users and policy makers training opportunities while would aid in decision-making.

Samad, Nayyer. "Contraceptive social marketing towards an optimum performance model." Thesis, University of East London, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.536634.

Abstract:
Against the backdrop of impending population explosion and the need to adopt reliable control measures, this thesis investigates the effectiveness of contraceptive social marketing (CSM) interventions for population control in a given socioeconomic context. The main purpose is to identify lacunae in principles and practice of CSM with the view to generate evidence-based strategic guides to inform. future programmes. A case study method was adopted to assess the impact of various social marketing approaches in Pakistan. With a population of 174 million, Pakistan is the sixth most populated country and the third largest contributor to the world population after China and India, and known to have had serious setbacks in population control. The main research questions were: (i) What are the concepts and principles that guide CSM intervention methods? (ii) How effective are the various intervention methods in achieving the CSM programme objectives? (iii) What factors facilitate or restrict the sustainability of a programme and whether they can be influenced? The research used primary and secondary data from various sources collected through interviews, archival records and documents of relevant institutions. It used a combination of pattern matching and explanation building for embedded case analysis. The results were then combined at national level for making general conclusion. The study finds that CSM programmes when significantly designed and implemented with end users in mind have robust explanatory powers in relation to usage of health products as part of behaviour change. The interventions in Pakistan reflected two distinctive theoretical orientations: the non-governmental organisational model focussed on equity while manufacturer's model aimed to build sustainable delivery of contraceptive methods. Generally both approaches were effective in creating health impact but failed to contribute towards equity or sustainability objectives. The research also indicates excessive reliance by practitioners on impacts of the transactional oriented marketing mix as opposed to culturally sensitive behavioural. antecedentsB. ased on the results of this researcht he thesis provides a framework for an integrated evidence based approach for future interventions.

Abstract:
We use the social force model to study the behaviour of two crowds of pedestrians in a bi-directional flow. There are two main goals of the project. The first goal is to study the effects of perception anisotropy on lane formation of the two crowds. The perception anisotropy models the fact that people actually do not perceive their surroundings equally well in all directions, i.e they have a field of vision. The second goal is to develop pedestrian viscosity indices to characterize the motion of the crowds. Our concepts of viscosity indices estimate how fluid the motion of the crowds are. We develop two viscosity indices. A lane viscosity index which gives information of the flow on large timescales, and a space-dependent viscosity index which can pinpoint where in space the motion is less fluid. Our results indicate that there is a small correlation between the perception anisotropy and the lane formation of the two crowds. The two viscosity indices work as intended but more refinement is needed to cope with simultaneous space-time changes.

Full text
Abstract:
Nigerian entrepreneurs face government barriers and lack the skills and awareness needed for successfully creating and scaling public value in resource-constrained environments. The concept of bricolage, which involves doing business by making do with resources at hand, has been addressed in the literature, but not as it occurs among Nigerian entrepreneurs. This study was conducted with the aim of narrowing this gap in knowledge by exploring how Nigerian entrepreneurs have successfully carried out their businesses. The research question addressed how Nigerian entrepreneurs overcame critical situations to successfully address the challenges of scaling and creating public value, and whether the theory of entrepreneurial bricolage can support their actions. A qualitative descriptive single case study with a purposeful sample of 22 interview respondents was employed. A total of 145 critical incidents were analyzed by fitting them into themes constructed a priori from the known behavioral patterns that emerged through the theoretical taxonomy of the concept of entrepreneurial bricolage. The results showed that Nigerian entrepreneurs made do with the resources at hand, improvised, and invoked stakeholder participation and persuasion to solve critical challenges of business continuity. The outcome of the research should help potential entrepreneurs determine strategies to scale their ideas or innovations to achieve positive social change. The results may be useful to any fledgling entrepreneur who needs encouragement when feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of doing business in Nigeria. Budding entrepreneurs can learn from the experiences of those who are deemed successful in their businesses, thereby avoiding challenges when they can and strategizing for those challenges that are unavoidable.

Johns, Lance. "The Development of a Comprehensive Model of Social Anxiety and Anticipatory Social Appraisals." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/515.

Full text
Abstract:
In anticipation of a future social interaction, socially anxious individuals (SAIs) may imagine themselves appearing stupid or foolish and predict and exaggerate the probability and costs of conveying these undesirable social images both on oneself (e.g., “I will feel stupid”) and on others impressions of oneself (e.g., “Others will think I’m stupid”). However, there is a paucity of research examining the latter bias; moreover, research regarding SAIs estimates of the probability and costs of conveying a positive impression (e.g., “I will feel smart”) has typically been neglected. Thus, the a novel questionnaire was created in order to develop a more comprehensive model of SAIs estimates of probability and costs. We expected that positive and negative, self- and other-related judgments will represent four distinct, latent constructs that will be related to trait social anxiety indirectly through fears of positive and negative evaluation per the evolutionary model of social anxiety. Structural equation modeling was used to test study hypotheses. The final sample included four hounded and seventy-four college students (307 males and 167 females). Results generally supported study hypotheses. After minor theoretically justified modifications, the hypothesized model provided good fit to the data, χ2(94) = 151.78, CFI = .99, TLI = .99, RMSEA = .04. All social appraisals (or judgments) with the exception of other-negative appraisals were indirectly related to social anxiety through fears of positive and negative evaluation. Contrary to expectations, other-positive appraisals were negatively related to fear of negative evaluation and other-negative appraisals were uncorrelated with fear of positive evaluation, providing partial incremental validity of the novel questionnaire used in this study. Results provide preliminary evidence that suggests future research should extend evaluation of SAIs anticipatory social appraisals beyond negative, self-related social impact. Implications, limitations, and future directions of the research are be discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
The Dual Effects Model of Social Control suggests that partners can positively and negatively influence the health behaviors of their partner. However, the model fails to consider the impact of control on non-targeted health behaviors, such as sleep. The current study sought to expand this model by including sleep continuity and duration as outcomes related to control efforts targeting diet and exercise. Partner control and objective sleep data were collected via daily sleep diaries and Fitbit Charge HR. Regression models were used to test the direct and indirect effects of control on sleep duration and continuity and the extent to which affective response mediates this relationship. Negative control had a significant effect on negative affect, but not on sleep continuity or duration. Positive control had a significant effect on positive affective response, but the full mediation model was not supported. Recommendations for future research using the proposed model are discussed.

Abstract:
Loneliness, or the perceived discrepancy of ones relationships in terms of quality, is known as Perceived Social Isolation (PSI). Studies have shown that PSI is both increasing and is correlated with health risks. Specifically, PSI is not only related with risks of mortality but is also linked with variations in the brain. Having few social contacts, or being Objectively Socially Isolated (OSI) does not qualify as PSI. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the neural correlates of PSI, as distinguished from OSI. The true role of PSI is still unknown, however, arguments can be made that PSI serves an important role in survival. The social brain, which allows for social cognition is used as a basis for understanding PSI in this thesis. In this thesis, I found that individuals suffering from PSI have increased attention towards social threat, and a preference to engage in positive social stimuli. Further, PSI affects both social cognition and the social brain. However, regional brain activity was not confined to the social brain. The results showed that PSI may be related to both affective and attentional networks of the brain. PSI also affects activity in the ventral striatum. Further, PSI is related to varied regional brain size. I argue that PSI can be reduced by mainly fixing maladaptive cognitive patterns.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is two-folded. On the one hand, it attempts to assist employers of Catalan micro-retailers in designing, implementing and developing their Social Media strategy as a complementary channel of communication. On the other hand, it attempts to contribute to the research community with a better understanding on both which building block of the micro-retailer¿s Business Model is more influenced by the customer level of interaction by means of the Social Media and how a transformation can be observed in the micro-retailers¿ Business Models as a result of the Social Media implementation. The research question to be answered in this paper is how the transformation of the activity system of the micro-retailers¿ Business Model would allow the emergence of a Participatory Business Model by means of Social Media. To carry out this research the Participatory Action Research methodology was used, whose contribution has two results: the one is more practitioner oriented and the other is more academic. The incipient results of the research showed a scarce transformation of Catalan microretailer¿s business model as a consequence of the implementation of social media. However, it is significant enough to be considered as more than just a simple adoption of an alternative channel of communication. One of the main contributions is related to how customer influences the activity system of the micro-retailer¿s business model beyond four levels of customer interaction (communication, interaction, participation and collaboration) by means of social media. On the one hand, the activity system of a business model is referred to the eight building blocks of Osterwalder, Pigneur and Tucci (2005) research that includes customer segment, customer relationship, distribution channel, capabilities, partner, value configuration, value proposition, profit and cost. On the other hand, the four defined levels of customer interaction are based on the literature of group collaboration systems. The results showed that not all the building blocks forming the business model are influenced by consumer interaction. The only building blocks influenced by an initial communication level in the current social media strategy implementation stage of our sample (five micro-retailers) are the following: customer segment, customer relationship, distribution channel, value proposition and cost. This incipient stage of transformation can be justified by a lack of effort made due to the small size of the business and a lack of team working inside the companies, easily adapting to changes. It can also be justified by the fact it was carried out by the micro-retailers only during a short period of time (14 month). Another contribution of the paper shows that Social Media transformation drives a BM innovation according to the following mediator elements: (1) the dynamic capabilities, (2) the ability of learning, (3) the dedicated effort, (4) the implementation time and (5) the level of customer participation.

Abstract:
Semiotic dynamics and computational evolutionary musicology literature investigate emergence and evolution of linguistic and musical conventions by using computational multi-agent complex adaptive system models. This thesis proposes a new computational evolutionary musicology model, by altering previous models of familiarity based musical interactions that try to capture evolution of songs as a co-evolutionary process through mate selection. The proposed modified familiarity game models a closed community of agents, where individuals of the society interact with each other just by using their musical expectations. With this novel methodology, it is found that constituent agents can form a musical agreement by agreeing on a shared bi-gram musical expectation scheme. This convergence is attained in a self-organizing fashion and throughout this process significant usage of n-gram melodic lines become observable. Furthermore, modified familiarity game dynamics are investigated and it is concluded that convergence trends are dependent on simulation parameters.

Abstract:
The human being is commonly considered as being the weakest link in information security. Subsequently, as information is one of the most critical assets in an organization today, it is essential that the human element is considered in deployments of information security countermeasures. However, the human element is often neglected in this regard. Consequently, many criminals are now targeting the user directly to obtain sensitive information instead of spending days or even months trying to hack through systems. Some criminals are targeting users by utilizing various social engineering techniques to deceive the user into disclosing information. For this reason, the users of the Internet and ICT-related technologies are nowadays very vulnerable to various social engineering attacks. As a contribution to increase users’ social engineering awareness, a model – called SERUM – was devised. SERUM aims to cultivate social engineering resistance within a community through exposing the users of the community to ‘fake’ social engineering attacks. The users that react incorrectly to these attacks are instantly notified and requested to participate in an online social engineering awareness program. Thus, users are educated on-demand. The model was implemented as a software system and was utilized to conduct a phishing exercise on all the students of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The aim of the phishing exercise was to determine whether SERUM is effective in cultivating social engineering resistant behaviour within a community. This phishing exercise proved to be successful and positive results emanated. This indicated that a model like SERUM can indeed be used to educate users regarding phishing attacks.

Full text
Abstract:
Statistical models are often used as the defining basis of measurement in social science. However, important issues such as uncertainty, model criticism and the impact of model assumptions are often neglected. These issues are explored in the context of three leading cases of model-based measurement. The relative index of inequality (RII) is used to measure socioeconomic inequality in health outcomes. A new definition of the RII is introduced, in place of the standard formulation based on linear regression. Non-linear outcome rates are accommodated, and estimation using cubic splines fitted by maximum penalized likelihood is developed. The modeling approach taken naturally handles standardizing variables such as age. Bootstrap estimation of variability is pursued. Simulations and a real data example demonstrate a reduction in bias, at the cost of some increase in variance, when incidence rates are non-linear. Social mobility can be measured using an index of mobility, which summarizes a mobility table in a single number. A certain index, based on the supposition of an underlying continuous-time Markov process, satisfies criteria set out in the literature. The 'embedding problem' is explored to assess when it is valid to apply this index. A sufficient condition for the distribution of a likelihood ratio test statistic is derived, and used to develop confidence intervals. In an example using French data, the index is used to caution against the conclusions of the popular UNIDIFF model. Electoral transitions between parties can be measured via a transition table of votes. The aggregated compound multinomial model for such a table appears rigid. Flexibility is introduced in two ways: the log-linear dependence on covariates is relaxed to one involving thin plate splines, and a new model with a general covariate structure is introduced. However, little improvement is offered in the example of describing the dependence of the 2005 British general election results on the 2001 results. This is illustrated using novel plots of residuals.

King, Michael. "The radicalization of homegrown terrorists: A social-personality model." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110446.

Full text
Abstract:
A new type of terrorist has emerged in the last decade. Inspired by jihadi ideology, these individuals are born and raised in the very country they wish to attack. Such homegrown terrorism has become the primary concern of security agencies in Western countries. While many theories purport to describe the exact stages involved in the radicalization leading to homegrown terrorism, very little empirical data exists on the psychology of those who become radicalized. In the present dissertation, I propose and test a novel model of the social psychological factors contributing to radicalization: the two-factor model of homegrown terrorism. The origins of the two-factor model are discussed in Manuscript 1, where I reviewed five major models of radicalization and analyzed them through the lens of terrorism studies and social psychology. This analysis yielded several avenues for future research, including the importance of the jihadi narrative and of personality traits. These two themes then formed the basis of the two-factor model of homegrown terrorism tested in Manuscript 2. In order to derive specific, testable hypotheses, social identity theory was used to deconstruct the jihadi narrative and social dominance theory was used to inform the theme of personality. I hypothesized that the jihadi narrative, which underscores a threat to Islam, is interpreted on an individual level as a threat to collective pride, and that low social dominance orientation (SDO) is linked to increased support for the use of violence. Together, a threat to collective pride and low SDO formed the two-factor model of homegrown terrorism. The initial test of the two-factor model consisted of a survey conducted with Canadian Muslims. Results supported one factor in the model but not the other. Respondents who perceived a greater threat to Islam reported less collective pride, which in turn lead to more aggressive action tendencies towards non-Muslim Canadians. Moreover, it was high SDO, rather than low SDO, that were linked to more aggressive action tendencies towards non-Muslim Canadians. A similar pattern of results was found in two laboratory experiments where participants were deceived into thinking that group members had either truly planned, or successfully carried out, acts of terrorism. When this violence was presented as a response against a threat to group pride, strongly identified group members viewed terrorism more positively. Moreover, during these experiments, higher levels of SDO were associated with more positive appraisals of terrorism. Manuscript 3 describes additional testing of the link between high SDO and terrorism. Capitalizing on an annual large-scale civil-war simulation, I investigated if participants' personality characteristics predicted their selection of simulation role. For two consecutive years, students who requested to enact terrorists and insurgents rated significantly higher on SDO than students requesting other roles. Overall, the results identify collective pride and high SDO as key factors in the radicalization process leading to terrorism. Implications for future research and counter-terrorism strategies are discussed.

Abstract:
Web-based social networks have become one of the most popular applications on the Internet in recent years. However, most of the social networks rely on some simplistic trust models to manage trust information of the users, which can cause problems ranging from unsatisfied user experience to exposure to malicious users. This thesis proposes a gravity-based trust model to enhance the aggregation of personal trust information into a subjective reputation system. This new model maps all users on the social network into n-dimensional Euclidean spaces based on their direct trust information, and creates a trust social neighborhood for each user. The reputation of a target user is determined by applying gravity model to the information from both target's and observer's trust social neighborhood. A prototype of this trust model is implemented in order to evaluate the effects of varying different parameters of the gravity-based trust model.

Watts, Christopher John. "An agent-based model of energy in social networks." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2799/.

Full text
Abstract:
We present a family of simulation models of agents with energy from social interactions. We take the concept of “energy” from social network analysts Cross & Parker, from Collins’s micro-sociology of interaction rituals, and from the social psychologists Ryan & Deci’s studies on intrinsic motivation. We use simulation models as “tools for thinking” about what energy is, and how it relates to the take up of ideas, the formation of cultural groups and the performance of work. Our models also provide insight into phenomena from studies of “communities of practice”, social capital and computer models of networks. Baker & Quinn have also developed simulations of agents with energy, and so we offer a critique of those. We develop our models as extensions of the Axelrod Cultural Model. Our family of energy models include those that ascribe “emotional energy” variously to individual agents, to agents’ individual attributes, and to agents’ memories of interactions rituals. Agents obtain energy payoffs from interactions based variously on their sense of autonomy, belongingness and competence. We compare the behaviour of each model and choice of payoff function through experiments to test claims derived from Cross & Parker: namely that “energisers” cause greater take up of their ideas, cause larger cultural groups to form around them, and raise the problem-solving performance of the agent population. We demonstrate this first claim for several model scenarios, but fail to find scenarios where the second two hold. We then conduct experiments to relate the capabilities of energisers to tasks of: disseminating ideas to otherwise homogeneous groups, and; spanning boundaries across cultural divides between groups. In all experiments we find two factors play critical roles in determining the diffusion and homogenisation of culture: the decay of energy charges on memories, and; the initial number of cultural traits in the population.

The aim of the thesis is to investigate the impact of the 2004 EU enlargement upon the sustainability of the European Social Model. Prior to the 2004 enlargement the existing literature, which conducted various top-down empirical studies of the 2004 new member states, argues the new member states to be a homogenous neoliberal bloc of countries which will erode the ESM. In a post 2004 EU the thesis takes a bottom-up analysis of the behaviour of two new member states, Hungary and Poland, upon two EU, policy-making case studies to assess the current claim. Firstly, the thesis investigates the current varieties of capitalism within Hungary and Poland to assess the claim that the new member states are a homogenous neoliberal bloc of countries.

This study will provide a population statistic model based on the full number of National pension insurance insured to make an analysis of future cash flows. The primary target of national pension insurance is citizens from 25 years old to 65 years old who has legal household registration in the country, and not participate in other social insurance. The national pension insurance must be influenced by population structure, social economics and whole financial environment. In addition, the personal condition of insured may also impact it; for instance economic situation, working environment, and whether to participate in labor insurance or not. Thus, there might be obstacles while we are doing the actuarial and financial report of insurance. However, the historical national pension actuarial report doesn’t define and speculate population statistic model in detail. As the result, the model might not have described the risk of future cash flow adequately. The risk could be the aging population or the reduction of insured population which may definitely influence the revenue of insurance and the social insurance system(Pay As You Go). In this study concept of The Cohort Component Method will influence composition of Insurant population and mode of flow except mortality rate. Included lapse rate calculate to propose estimated method that describe premiums paid population to decrease and ageing phenomenon of age structure year by year in recently. For explaining income of insurance will decrease and elderly pension increase trends year by year in the future. Using back test in this study to add samples of insurant in October, 2008 for the first time and develop premiums paid population, Insurant population, premiums income and elderly pension payment in past seven year step by step. In current higher education fundraising models where alumni are aligned with their degree-granting unit, the academic library struggles to match the fundraising outcomes of its campus peers. A survey of seventy-nine fundraisers in academic libraries collected data on fundraising activity. It reveals common practices amongst fundraisers working in this environment and ongoing challenges to success. In a second study, a fundraising model based on social capital is proposed as an alternative to the traditional alumni model. The final study evaluates interviews with thirty-two individuals that further explores the challenges to fundraising success and the efficacy of social capital building as a method to overcome systemic challenges. Interviewees include academic library fundraisers, library deans/directors and university development leaders. Findings reveal a strong interest in a social capital-based approach to fundraising but reveal the necessity to pair the new model with revised fundraiser assessment models capable of measuring these soft skills.

Social network sites (SNSs) have been flourishing for these years and are deeply integrated in people’s daily lives. This kind of online services has substituted traditional sharing ways and is rapidly changing our lifestyles. Through SNSs, users’ can keep contact with others and obtain lots of timely information. Many investigators even have found that using SNSs may create a strong positive effect on one’s real life quality. We can describe this intangible benefit in terms of “social capital.” However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no models dedicated to analyzing the social capital on online social networks. Therefore, in this thesis, we first identify the contributing factors for the social capital on SNSs, namely, the level of sociability, the level of content sharing, the investment level of sociability, the investment level of content sharing and the level of privacy disclosure. Then, we build a social capital valuation model for SNSs based on these factors and utilize the optimal control theory to obtain the optimal solution. The analysis of our model can be divided into two cases, static and dynamic. In the static case, we analyze the problem by assuming the level of privacy disclosure is constant over time and analyze how the levels of sociability, content sharing and social capital are influenced. We next investigate the results in the case of dynamic privacy disclosure. In the static case, we found that the social capital derived by sociability, the sensitivity to privacy disclosure, the aggregated social capital and the system quality have positive impacts on sociability. And the level of content sharing is positively influenced by that the social capital derived by content sharing and the sensitivity to privacy disclosure. But high system quality will decrease content sharing at early stage. We also found that the optimal privacy disclosure of user will be higher at early stage but dramatically decrease in later period. By conducting this optimal privacy disclosure strategy, user can gain more social capital on social network sites. Finally, we discuss the management insights of the results. Our model can well explain users’ behavior on SNSs and can be used to improve the management strategies of SNSs.

This paper uses an Uzawa (1965) - Lucas (1988) two-sector model of endogenous growth to examine how the social status affects economic growth. The social status is derived form the accumulation of physical capital (wealth) and human capital (education). We find that human capital not only plays the role of growth-engine but also acts the accelerative intermedium between the social status and growth. The investment of human capital crowded out and the long-run growth would be reduced when people desire more physical-capital derived social status. This paper also examines the relationship between inflation and growth in an economy in which money is introduced through a cash-in-advance constraint. We fine that the existence of social status produces three channels to affect the relationship between inflation and growth: 1. the opportunity cost of investment in human capital induce by inflation. 2. the gap between social status derived and opportunity cost of investment in human capital when inflation occurs. 3. the difference between social status derived from physical capital accumulation and the opportunity cost of human capital accumulation.
