The cities worldwide face with many issues directly related to the urban space, especially in the infrastructure aspects. Most of these urban issues generally affect the life of both resident and visitant people. For example, people can report a car parked on a footpath which is forcing pedestrians to walk on the road or a huge pothole that is causing traffic congestion. Besides being related to the urban space, urban issues generally demand actions from city authorities. There are many Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN) in the smart cities domain worldwide where people complain about urban issues in a structured way and local authorities are aware to fix them. With the advent of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, people tend to complain in an unstructured, sparse and unpredictable way, being difficult to identify urban issues eventually reported. Social media data, especially Twitter messages, photos, and check-ins, have played an important role in the smart cities. A key problem is the challenge in identifying specific and relevant conversations on processing the noisy crowdsourced data. In this context, this research investigates computational methods in order to provide automated identification of urban issues shared in social media streams. Most related work rely on classifiers based on machine learning techniques such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), Naïve Bayes and Decision Trees; and face problems concerning semantic knowledge representation, human readability and inference capability. Aiming at overcoming this semantic gap, this research investigates the ontology-driven Information Extraction (IE) from the perspective of urban issues; as such issues can be semantically linked in LBSN platforms. Therefore, this work proposes an Urban Issues Domain Ontology (UIDO) to enable the identification and classification of urban issues in an automated approach that focuses mainly on the thematic and geographical facets. Experimental evaluation demonstrates the proposed approach performance is competitive with most commonly used machine learning algorithms applied for that particular domain.

The environmental theme is configured in an arena of conflict and consensus as well. An area full of heterogeneities whose diversity of ideas and interests makes it a challenging and exciting field of knowledge and professional performance. With the emergency of this theme in the global scenario, that international agencies greatly contributed to its spread, there is an increasing interest in the subject, which raises various discussions among which stands the debate on environmental sustainability which proposal would be able to combine growth economic, environmental preservation and social development. However, this proposal appears to be inconsistent and incoherent with the development model established and engendered by the capitalist society, in which the forms of exploitation and predatory domination imposed to the nature and to the men a relation of inequality both social and environmental. Closely related, conditioned and determined by the relations of production and reproduction proper by the characteristic of capitalist economic and social system, the environmental theme has close links with social issues, becoming even as a refraction of this. As a professional who works in the manifestations of Social Issues, the Social Worker is absorbing knowledge on environmental issues related to their field of knowledge and action, and both his remarks and his understanding on this problematic will become even more skilled as they are the established discussions on the subject. This research aimed to know how the discussion on the environmental issue was inserted in the field of interest of social services, identifying key themes, the institutions where this debate was more present and theoretical influences absorbed. The aim of this study was to provide a reflection on the ways that has been traversed and paths within the profession about this issue.

Full textAll teachers will inevitably be confronted with issues related to students’ absence. This study sets out to investigate how language teachers’ daily work is affected when students are absent.Four language teachers at an upper secondary school were interviewed about their experiences of and their views on students’ non-attendance. They were also asked to describe how they handle absence as a part of their daily routines. All the informants thought that absence is a serious problem. Form teachers’ workload is especially affected if their class has many students with high absence. Their strategies for handling absence were based on their aim to keep their workload down and to obtain fairness and equivalence.

In recent years, social networks and their related theories and applications attract widespread attentions in computer science. Many applications are designed by exploring the social information among users, such as social peer-to-peer systems, mobile cloud, and online recommendation systems. Most of the existing works only focus on how to use social information but ignore the fact that social information itself may cause severe security and privacy problems. In this dissertation, we first present some social information-assisted application systems that we have designed, and then, we present several social information-involved privacy and security risks and their countermeasures. Generally speaking, the design procedure of any social information-assisted application involves three tasks: publishing, accessing, and using social information. However, all of these tasks contain privacy and security issues. Social information can be published from a centralized system or a distributed one. For the centralized scheme, the social information is directly published from online social networking systems, such as Facebook or Twitter. However, we found that the data of a social network essentially is a time-evolving graph. Most of the existing approaches fail to preserve users' identity privacy once a malicious attacker has the external knowledge about the victim's time-varying behaviors. For avoiding the new privacy issue, we propose a time-based anonymization scheme. For the distributed social information-sharing scheme, each user's information is propagated from friend to friend's friends, and so on. We design a new scheme to gradually enhance the privacy protection along a propagation path, in the meanwhile, maximally preserve the overall utility of the user's data. From a data accessing aspect, social information can be used by malicious users for launching new attacks. In this dissertation, we find a friendship-based privacy disclosure attack, and a corresponding defense approach is designed. Location-based service has been widely adopted. In order to preserve location privacy, users usually turn off the corresponding applications when visiting sensitive locations. However, once social relationships are known, attackers are able to infer these hidden locations, which disclose users' location privacy. For preserving the location privacy, we design a fake location-based approach, which efficiently disorders the social-geographic relationships among users. From the data usage aspect, social information and its related data may come from users. A system may lose functioning if some malicious users inject plenty of fake information. Mobile clouds and Friend Locator are two typical systems, which are vulnerable to the fake information-related attacks. Mobile clouds explore the idle computing resources of surrounding devices by recruiting nearby friends to participate in the same task. However, malicious users may inject wrong friendships information to mess up the system. When visiting a new place, Friend Locator provides navigation services for participators by creating a map based their trajectories. The functioning of the system is based on the trust among participators. Once a user's device is controlled by attackers, all other users may receive wrong navigation. For defending these attacks, we provide different countermeasure.
