Full text
Abstract:
Bruno Trentin. Lavoro, libertà, conoscenza takes into consideration the figure of Bruno Trentin (1926-2007) and his work as a union leader and politician, his numerous writings in the framework of the history of Republican Italy and the transformations induced by the processes of globalisation. From this reflection, conducted from different disciplinary angles and with different political and cultural sensitivity, what emerges clearly is the extremely idiosyncratic significance of Bruno Trentin in both the practice and the theoretical analysis of the labour struggle and the exploration of its problems. A historic contribution featuring a wealth of suggestions, intuitions and reflections, capable of interpreting events and their potential union and political repercussions, within a project for the enhancement of liberty and the social and cultural role of work conducted in an extraordinarily innovative and far-sighted manner.

Abstract:
This article presents a strategy for political research. It first explores the ways people comprehend and briefly discusses the forms of comprehension. The next section introduces the author's fieldwork in the coffee zones of East Africa. This reveals that the first step of the strategy is immersion, and the second is a movement from insight to explanation, which is marked by the production of theory. Finally, it shows that the resultant explanation may be logically coherent, faithful to the original intuition, and consistent with the observations that inspired it.

Abstract:
Social background theory formalizes and tests the intuition that judges’ attributes and experiences will affect their rulings. Attributes can include race, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, religion, and socioeconomic background. Experience can include education, occupation, and political activism. Social background theory is a positive theory rather than a normative one: it treats these factors as an explanation for a judge’s actions. Social background theory has a history of intentional scholarly integration of ideas and methods in other fields. The theory can be seen as evolving through four stages tied to that integration: Legal Realism, behavioralism, new institutionalism, and computation. After briefly assessing the contributions and limitations of the theory, the chapter ends with a proposal for a relevancy threshold for social background research.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents a theory of corporate campaigns in which activists use campaigns as a means of harming a firm’s reputation in hope of motivating it to increase its private regulation—corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities aimed at reducing negative externalities or other forms of social harm caused by the firm. The analysis is dynamic in nature because interactions between activists and firms unfold over time. This captures the idea that a firm’s reputation is an asset that can be built or harmed over time. As a firm’s reputation grows, the firm tends to coast on its reputation by reducing its private regulation. This explains why a pragmatic activist—one who cares about the outcome of private regulation and not about the firm’s reputation per se—would find it worthwhile to harm the firm’s reputation. Chapter 2 lays out a three-period model of corporate campaigns to build intuition about the interaction of the activist and the firm. Chapter 3 extends the model to an infinite horizon and allows the activist to use various tactics: criticism, which has a potentially mild impact on the firm’s reputation; confrontation, which can cause a reputational crisis in which the firm’s reputation can be dramatically impaired; and rewards, which increase a firm’s reputation. Chapter 4 analyzes whether the presence of the activist increases or diminishes social welfare. Chapter 5 explores how the activist would choose among potential target firms in the context of different forms of competition between firms. Chapter 6 summarizes and offers lessons for scholars and practitioners.

Full text
Abstract:
Clinical wisdom and intuition suggest that when treating major depression and/or anxiety disorders, combining two documented efficacious treatments such as antidepressants and psychotherapy would improve outcome. However, the data do not completely support this conclusion. This chapter reviews randomized clinical trials comparing combined pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy with monotherapy for the treatment of major depressive disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder in adults. Although DSM-V no longer categorizes posttraumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder as anxiety disorders, the authors continue to include them in this chapter.

Abstract:
Medical ethics—from thorny moral questions such as euthanasia and the morality of killing to political questions such as the fair distribution of healthcare resources—is rarely out of today’s media. Medical Ethics: A Very Short Introduction explores the ethical reasoning used to approach medical ethics, introducing the most important ‘tools’ of ethical reasoning, and discussing how argument, thought experiments, and intuition can be combined in the consideration of medical ethics. It also considers its practical application by health professionals in clinical settings and the increasingly important place of medical ethics in the wider social context, in healthcare policy, discussions in the media, pressure group and activism settings, and in legal judgements.

Abstract:
Social concern theory (SCT) states that individuals are naturally inclined to show concern for the welfare of others, desire close ties to others, follow certain moral intuitions, and conform to the behavior and views of others. SCT describes the implications of these inclinations for crime. This essay begins by discussing the conceptions of human nature in different crime theories. It then describes the propositions of SCT, with the major proposition being that individuals high in the elements of social concern are generally less likely to engage in crime. It next reviews the limited research on this proposition, followed by a discussion of the policy implications of SCT and directions for further research.

Abstract:
Company stakeholders have unprecedented access to information about company activities and are looking beyond accounting reports for broader information to better assist their decisions (IIRC, 2011). Integrated reporting (IR) is a reporting framework promoted in recent years that aims to capture the broader social and environmental dimensions of company operations and report the information in meaningful ways. While the intuition behind IR is simple and attractive, debates relating to the practicalities of implementing this “new” form of reporting persist. We use the lens of research on financial and sustainability reporting to explore some challenges faced by IR. We examine a significant body of work conducted over the past three decades that has shaped our understanding of how company reports are interpreted and used. Based on this analysis, we offer insight into the challenges facing IR. These insights can be useful for informing the debate on implementation of this proposed reform.

Huebner, Bryce, ed. The Philosophy of Daniel Dennett. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199367511.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Daniel C. Dennett began publishing innovative philosophical research in the late 1960s, and he has continued doing so for the past 45 years. He has addressed questions about the nature of mind and consciousness, the possibility of freedom, and the significance of evolution to addressing questions across the cognitive, biological, and social sciences. This book explores the intellectual significance of this research project, bringing together the insights of 11 researchers who are currently working on themes that are relevant to Dennett’s philosophical worldview. Some of the contributions address interpretive issues within Dennett’s corpus, and they aim to bring increased clarity to Dennett’s project. Others report novel empirical data, at least in part, in the service of fleshing out Dennett’s claims. Some of them provide a fresh take on a Dennettian theme, and others extend his views in novel directions. Like Dennett’s own work, these papers draw on a wide range of different methodologies, from appeals to intuition pumps and scientific data, to turning the knobs on a theory to see what it can do. But each of them aims to be readable, and approachable. And as a whole, the volume provides a critical and constructive overview of Dennett’s stance-based methodology, as well as explorations of his claims about metal representation, consciousness, cultural evolution, and religion.

Abstract:
Practised as a second-order discipline, aesthetics constructs theories of artistic and aesthetic phenomena as those phenomena are understood in the humanities and social and behavioural sciences. Parts II and III of this book illustrate how to do aesthetics as a second-order discipline, focusing first on the psychology of images and then on their socially embedded functions. Part I considers some of the advantages of second-order aesthetics. It protects against the parochialism that can result from a reliance on intuitions in philosophy. Second-order aesthetics also promises to bring together and integrate disparate lines of inquiry across disciplines, bridging the recent explosion of new research in the aesthetic sciences with scholarship in the humanities.

Mcbride, Lee A. Insurrectionist Ethics and Racism. Edited by Naomi Zack. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190236953.013.52.

Full text
Abstract:
Insurrectionist ethics is relevant to both racism and the liberation of racially oppressed peoples. Insurrectionist ethics generates moral intuitions, character traits, and specific practices to motivate the liberation of oppressed groups. Accounts of both racism and insurrectionist ethics have been provided in the work of Leonard Harris. The core tenets of insurrectionist ethics can be highlighted through the work of Angela Davis. As a result, insurrectionist ethics and its militant posture of resistance are seen to be crucial to human liberation and social amelioration in the face of racism. This impetus and advocacy are aimed toward creating social and material conditions fundamentally different from the confining and destructive conditions that constrict the freedom of racialized populations.
