Abstract:
This study was conducted to assess Masters of social Work students’ interest in gerontology. Students’ gerontological knowledge, attitude and experience with the aging population was examined to see if they have any influence on interest in working with older adults. The positivist worldview was used to identify students’ behavior toward older adults while checking to see if correlates to interest in working with that population. Survey questionnaire was used to collect information on student’s interest in working with older adults, their knowledge, attitude and experience. Modified versions of Palmore Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ) and Kogan’s Attitude Toward Old People (KAOP) scales were used to collect information on students’ knowledge and attitude toward older adults. Additional questions about demographic data was included along with direct question on interest in working with the older adults. The results from the use of the quantitative approach allowed further statistical analysis using SPSS to identify relationships between the variables. The study found relationships between knowledge of aging and interest in aging-related work. The study recommends that future research examine factors that influence attitude and implementing gerontological education and training in social work programs to improve student’s interest in aging related work.

Abstract:

The use of social media by older adults is on the rise. Social media allows older adults to keep meaningful connections with friends, family, and life. Social media allows older adults to stay connected through prevailing frailty, geographical displacement, and morbidity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of use or non-use of social media on social-connectivity/loneliness and depression, and the effect of demographic variables including sex, age, income, and educational level on the use of social media. There were a total of 67 participants in the study. The data revealed that income was a significant factor in the use of social media. Moreover, lower income participants used social media significantly less than the upper and middle income level participants. This study was created to specifically look at participant's use/non-use of social media and therein introduced specific factors that could have possibly varied when compared.

Abstract:
As the human being ages, chronic diseases become more frequent, which makes the elderly need more attention to health. In parallel to this scenario, the Brazilian family structure has been undergoing changes and, at present, it is increasingly difficult for the family members to provide the care needed by the elderly. Many private companies already have the supply of caregivers of elderly people for home care, others are using a new form of health care for the elderly, with the inclusion of gerontologists in the management of care. Objective: to understand the meaning of the bachelor gerontologist as manager of the formal home care, from the perspective of gerontologists and formal caregivers directly involved in care for the elderly. Method: The research is qualitative and had as methodological reference the social phenomenology. Twenty participants were interviewed, who work in home care companies located in the city of São Paulo, 15 formal caregivers and five gerontologists. The testimonies were collected through guiding questions, recorded and transcribed. For the analysis of the data the categorization of the meanings was carried out from the phenomenological reduction. Results: from the testimony it was possible to verify that the gerontologists: care for the health care of the elderly; train and mentor caregivers of the elderly; provide comprehensive and effective support to caregivers; manage the information; give guidance and support to family members; unite interprofessional staff, family members and caregivers; manage family conflicts; assist the caregiver in the process of adaptation with the patient; among other categories. Conclusion: The understanding of the gerontologist\'s meanings as a manager of formal home care shows that this professional, with his general and interdisciplinary training on aging and old age, is able to develop an integral view of the elderly, understand and respond to their biopsychosocial needs, work as a team and act actively in the care. All caregivers interviewed present a definite and positive view regarding the performance of the gerontologist. They emphasized that the lack of gerontological management directly affects the quality of care provided to the elderly

Abstract:
The United States is undergoing a major increase in a segment of the population we socially define and understand as aged. By the year 2030 approximately one in every five Americans will be 65 years or older. Because the concept of age is encompassed in our everyday world of social reality, it is a subject matter for the discipline of sociology. Aging is also recognized as a subject matter for courses in social gerontology, which incorporates a multidisciplinary approach with material from social, psychological, and biological areas. This research endeavor constitutes a content analysis of course syllabi found in the 5th edition of Teaching Sociology of Aging and the Life Course, an instructional resource publication available through the American Sociology Association, to gain insight into the way sociology constructs and presents the study of aging in sociology of aging courses as opposed to courses in social gerontology. The presence of seven sociological concepts, as well as psychological and biological references, is examined and compared in syllabi from the two areas of aging study. Results show the main differences between the two types of syllabi are that social gerontology focuses on psychological issues and sociology of aging emphasizes social roles. Both areas of study are somewhat similar, for both contain concepts in areas referencing roles, norms, stratification, and population. Social gerontology syllabi appear to have a significantly higher presence of psychological references than does sociology of aging and slightly more reference to biological references than does sociology of aging.

LAU, Tsz Wai. "Explaining volunteering in old age : a social reinforcement perspective." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2003. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/soc_etd/19.

Full text
Abstract:
Volunteering has been widely accepted as potentially a very good means to engage older persons and to maximize their contribution to society. There is a need to understand the entire process of volunteering, the reasons that motivate older persons to participate in volunteer services and activities and to appreciate why committed elderly volunteers continue to involve themselves in volunteering. The present study attempts to explore the possible motivational and sustainable aspects in the process of volunteering guided by a social reinforcement perspective. It further aims to propose an explanatory model for the initiation and sustainability of volunteering involving older persons in Hong Kong. A theoretical framework of the study focuses on the social reinforcement perspective within the cognitive-behavioral approach in explaining the volunteering process in terms of antecedences, pre-conditions, actual experience and consequences of volunteering. A questionnaire was distributed to explore the different aspects of volunteering, including the patterns of volunteer services, volunteer involvement, reasons for and effects of volunteering and personal profile of the volunteers. The target of the study was hospital volunteers aged 60 or above. The research design was a mail questionnaire survey using self-administered procedures. A total of 287 elderly respondents, 63 men and 224 women aged 60 to 86 years, drawn from the database of the Hospital Authority were assessed. The response rate was 30.3% with 1,359 valid responses. The study showed that older volunteers satisfied the pre-conditions for volunteering, such as having good health, free time and financial stable. The present study revealed that a great majority (74%) of the older volunteer respondents was inspired by altruistic reasons of wanting to help and to feel contented and approximately half were initially motivated by the altruistic motive of social responsibility. Social motives of seeking social exposure, making new friends and sharing of experiences were other important initial reasons. These factors were sustained when respondents reported the reasons for their continued participation in volunteering. The respondents perceived obvious positive changes in physical, psychological, cognitive and social well-being and they were satisfied and gratified with the volunteering experiences. The research also revealed the positive changes in volunteer’s life satisfaction, exposure and experience, self-appraisal and confidence. The positive outcomes of volunteering, such as enhanced self-esteem, life satisfaction and personal exposure help to affirm the initial intention of volunteering, which in turn reinforces the continual participation in volunteer services with the evidence of consistent findings of both initial and continual participation in volunteering.

Abstract:

This project describes the development of a software application geared towards connecting LGBTQ older adults with each other with an aim to reduce social isolation. Older adults tend to lose their connections with others throughout the aging process. LGBTQ older adults experience more challenges in creating and maintaining social relationships compared to their heterosexual peers. When social connections are lost, social isolation threatens the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of older adults. The software application was designed and revised using feedback from two expert panel focus groups of LGBTQ older adults, 50 years and older, residing in Los Angeles and Riverside Counties.

Abstract:

The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a twenty-five-year longitudinal study that studies populations over the age of fifty. There is a lack of studies that examine depression and social isolation as comorbid conditions. The purpose of this study was to examine secondary data from the 2014 wave of the HRS regarding associations between depression, social isolation and demographic characteristics, including age (50–104 years), gender, and marital status. Self-reported data from 18,289 participants (10,703 females and 7,586 males) suggested a positive association between depression and social isolation ( r = .365, p < .001) in that as levels of depression increase so do feelings of social isolation. Significantly more females than males reported having depression. Those who were married reported less depression and social isolation. Younger ages experienced depression and older ages social isolation. Further research should explore solutions to decreasing depression and social isolation among older adults in the United States.

Abstract:

The social work practice problem of this doctoral action research project was the unmet mental health needs of veterans 65 and older in Puerto Rico. This action research project explored the experiences and challenges of social workers when they offer mental health services to veterans 65 and older. This study was framed using social support theory, integrating the 3 core elements of tangible support, emotional support, and informational support. The data collection technique included a semistructured interview protocol used in a focus group setting. Purposive sampling was used to identify 9 participants who were licensed social workers in Puerto Rico. Through content analysis, the findings were coded and organized into the following themes: educational background; ethics and wellbeing aspects; evaluation, interventions, and treatments; professional social and cultural competencies; social support experiences; multidisciplinary service coordination processes; and the elderly veterans’ unmet needs. The results of this study could be used by social workers and administrators to contribute to positive social change through the improvement of social work practices and the development of innovative knowledge when intervening with veterans 65 and older and their families in Puerto Rico.

Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to create a curriculum for adults over age 50 who are searching for employment. Older adults are more likely to be unemployed longer after a job loss, need to return to work after retirement, need health insurance or need to supplement their retirement income. They may desire social interaction, and/or need a sense of meaning in their lives that being employed can provide. Older adults are more likely to experience lower self-esteem and isolation than younger adults. This curriculum includes a focus on identifying and strengthening internal and external strategies and support systems for adults over 50 who are looking for employment.

This curriculum incorporates modules on the job search process, coping with stress, identifying transferable skills, resume creation, building computer skills including online professional networks, interviewing, and networking. It is hoped this curriculum will provide older adults with the skills and strategies to build greater confidence and secure employment that meets their unique needs to enhance their quality of life.

Abstract:
As people age, they are increasingly likely to develop health problems that can lead to an impaired ability to perform essential activities of daily living (ADL). This decrease in functional ability may then result in an increased need for physical assistance which, in turn, may not be met. There has been little research on unmet need in the elderly and its association with psychological distress. This research used data from the Montreal Unmet Needs Study, a prospective cohort study of 576 women and 263 men designed to investigate self-reported unmet need for community-based services among the Montreal elderly aged 75 and older. Information on psychological distress and unmet need was obtained by self-report during in-depth face-to-face interviews at baseline, and again twelve months later. Interview information was supplemented with data provided by RAMQ and MEDECHO government databases. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used to investigate the associations between unmet need and psychological distress, and to determine the conjoint effect of both these factors on emergency department (ED) visits within the six months following the baseline interview. All analyses were stratified by sex. For elderly women, unmet need at baseline predicated increased psychological distress one year later. Conversely, psychological distress was not found to predict the development of any unmet need one year later. Both unmet need in IADL and increased psychological distress at baseline were found to be independent predictors of an increased likelihood of elderly women visiting an ED. For elderly men, unmet need was not found to be associated with psychological di

Abstract:
This study examines the lived reality of women caregivers of older adults. Using a microethnographic approach and videographic data collection in the homes of five caregiver - care receiver dyads, the research provides a new account of family caregiving. Grounded in a conceptual framework of embodiment, as articulated by social theorists Pierre Bourdieu and Erving Goffman, the data illustrates that seemingly banal gestures and expressions expose the intimate, often hidden, reality of caregiving. The findings reveal a gendered caregiver habitus characterized by emotional labour, performance, body management, health divestment, and vacillating boundaries between the caregiver and care receiver. The project validates the everyday experiences of women caregivers, proposes recommendations for improved clinical practice, and bridges scholarship on caregiving and the sociology of the body.

Abstract:

This content analysis of existing literature explored older adults' perceptions and use of technology in healthcare. Thirty studies within the last 10 years were analyzed for content. Results of the content analysis revealed that many older adults used the Internet as a health resource and/or to search for health-related information. Some predictors of computer and/or Internet use for health-related information were younger age, more years of education, and more diagnosed diseases and conditions. Barriers of computer and/or Internet use included lack of interest, functional limits, cost, complexity, and security and privacy concerns. Privacy was also an identified as a potential barrier of smart home technology use. Perceived need for technology was important in older adults' willingness to use smart home technology. Implications for social work practice were discussed.

Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore, from the perspectives of clinicians, the therapeutic techniques they have found to be effective in helping older adults recover from elder abuse. The researcher developed the interview guide. A total of 12 clinicians, who had experience working with survivors of elder abuse in a therapeutic setting, were interviewed.

The results indicated that clinicians saw similar symptoms, including depression, anxiety, trauma, and fear. Methods for addressing those symptoms included cognitive-based therapy, active listening, life reviews, and making referrals. Therapeutic involvement with the family was low, but when used included education and active listening. Lastly, there was a high demand from clinicians for prevention efforts and education regarding elder abuse.

More research is needed on effective interventions for helping older adults recover from elder abuse.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation investigates the relationship between marital history and individuals’ retirement resources, namely Social Security, employer-sponsored pensions, and non-housing wealth. Prior research provides a foundation for understanding marriage’s positive relationship to retirement security, and suggests that marriage is financially beneficial and can even lessen some external factors that would otherwise damage a family’s financial situation. Yet changing demographics, with fewer people in first marriages and rising numbers of individuals experiencing divorce and choosing to remain unmarried, suggest our understanding of this relationship for today’s retirees may be limited. The purpose of this research is to identify which aspects of complex marital histories are associated with individuals’ retirement security, paying particular attention to gender differences. Using data from nine waves of the Health and Retirement Study (1992-2008), four facets of marital history are examined: marriage type, frequency, timing, and duration. Currently married and currently unmarried respondents are separated during the analyses in order to adequately capture the association between previous marital events and retirement resources. The results indicate that marital history is associated with Social Security, employer-sponsored pensions, and non-housing wealth differently, and that these relationships vary by gender and current marital status. The findings provide support for the argument that marital history, and in particular marital duration, has a strong relationship to retirement resources. Contrary to expectations, currently married women with longer marriages have less Social Security and pension income than married women who experienced shorter marriages. Marital history has no relationship to the retirement security of married men. For the unmarried groups, never married men have the lowest odds of receiving an employer-sponsored pension and have less non-housing wealth than both divorce and widowed men. Unmarried women’s retirement security is associated with the type of disruption experienced; women with multiple past marriages have more resources if they are currently widowed but less if they are currently divorced. Further study is needed to understand how and why complex marital history factors have a relationship to retirement finances, and to expand our knowledge about certain understudied populations such as remarried women and never married men.

Abstract:

The purpose of this grant proposal was to develop and seek funding from the Archstone Foundation to implement program “Tech Connect,” which bridges gaps between generations of college students and older adults in Long Beach, California. The grant writer identified a need for older adults to be more connected socially and technologically as well as a need for more geriatric social workers. The Tech Connect program will take place at Menorah Housing Foundation's Long Beach Senior Housing building and will work with students from California State University Long Beach’s School of Social Work. The Tech Connect program outlines how students will teach older adults to use iPads while students learn about the lives of older adults and experience meaningful connections through games. The goals of the program include older adult participants reporting less loneliness and social isolation, continuing to use iPads, and student participants reporting a higher interest in working with older adult populations.

Abstract:
At the intersection of adult education and social gerontology, and propelled by the ageing phenomenon, educational gerontology has a critical place in the study of older adult education. To contend with older learners' needs, professional adult educators require an enhanced preparation, and concomitance to a reinvigoration of current adult learning programs to include the constructs of educational gerontology and the geragogical imperative. Through survey and interviews, this research investigated evidence of, and the capacity for, Australian Adult Education programs and Ageing Research centres to meet this requirement. Results of this case study indicate a paucity of evidence of educational gerontology in adult education programs, coupled with significant potential for capacity development in this field through collaboration with Ageing Research initiatives. The findings suggest an expansion of current curriculum in adult education programs to include aspects of educational gerontology, professional development of Adult Education academics in the specialized area of educational gerontology, and broader adult education engagement with external stakeholders and the ageing research community as a contribution to social betterment.

Abstract:
The growth of the aging population has warranted increased training and education to prepare professionals with the specific knowledge needed to best serve older adults. Gerontology, as an academic discipline, provides professionals with the conceptual knowledge and the skills necessary to address the complexities of working with a diverse aging population. Little research has been done of the characteristics of professionals both with and without formal education in gerontology that are working with the aging population. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of career motivation, job satisfaction, attitudes about aging, career commitment, and professional identity among those working with older adults. An exploration of the characteristics of gerontological professionals has implications for the development of best practice approaches in student and staff recruitment, retention, curriculum design, and training practices. Participants were recruited from volunteers invited from a convenience sample of approximately 7,000 members signed up to receive emails from the Department of Gerontology at a Southeastern University, and a snowball approach with the link to the survey being distributed by various organizations and institutions (e.g., assisted living facilities, Southern Gerontological Society, Therapeutic Recreation Association). Professionals’ age and job satisfaction significantly predicted professional identity. Participants’ career motivation, job satisfaction, and exposure to formal gerontological education (MSE) significantly predicted career commitment. Self-identified professional identity in aging groups did not moderate the relationship between MSE predictors and career commitment. However, aging anxiety mediated the relationship between job satisfaction and career commitment. Finally, age and higher perception of the value of teamwork predicted both level of professional identity and job satisfaction. This study sheds lights on perspectives of professionals working with older adults and highlights areas for future research and training with this population.

Seldom studied in the academic world, the pair Fashion and Old age is the central topic of this essay. Daily contacts with fashion in addition to a real interest in the place of old age in the world of fashion were the main motives for this research. Historical, social and cultural references to fashion, whether available in printed material or found through on-line searches, were decisive to carry out this essay. The concealment of old age, so typical of our model of society, unfolds in the always modest areas dedicated to elderly people s clothes and fabrics and in the lack of concern with old age or ageing among those who militate in the field of fashion. Elaborated in order to put the topic in context and to foment a progressive approach to research and field work, this essay studies the aspects related to ageing process and old age. At the same time, it examines some facets of the history of fashion, broadening its scope beyond nacional level. The structured interview method was used in our field research. Five survey respondents were selected among people directly or indirectly related to fashion. The answers reveal a certain idealization of old age as well as its denial, this denial meaning that old age does not exist or that it cannot be consciously accepted

Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to implement a music therapy program for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. There are over five million people in the United States who live with Alzheimer’s disease and that number is expected to increase significantly. The costs of medication and the negative impacts of dementia require non-pharmacological treatments.

This program would be held at Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles in Los Angeles. The May and Stanley Smith Trust was chosen as the funding source. If funded, this program would not only improve the quality of life of individuals suffering living with dementia but also their caregivers. Through various forms of music therapy (individual and group, including activity therapy where participants play instruments) and a support group for caregivers, this program is expected to lead to positive impacts on a large scale.

Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to develop a fall prevention intervention that includes an evidence-based strategy, Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB), in a low-income, senior independent living apartment building, Providence Gardens, with its non-profit partner, Las Palmas Housing Foundation. An extensive literature review determined that fall prevention can enhance quality of life and aging in place. The program will offer TJQMBB classes which increase strength and balance, as well as home safety evaluations, by a Tai Chi certified instructor and a Service Coordinator. The specific objectives include increased strength and balance and decreased fear of falling.

The Archstone Foundation was chosen as an appropriate funder due to its focus on supportive housing. The actual submission of the grant was not a requirement of the thesis project.

Abbott, Temeka L. "Caregiver's Perception of Services That Contribute to the Optimal Experience of Mentally Ill Older Adults in Mental Health Day Programs." Thesis, Capella University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10823454.

Full text
Abstract:

Quality of life in mentally ill older adults is an important area to target in psychiatric rehabilitation. Additionally, the ability for these individuals to live a more independent lifestyle and/or to feel fulfilled is a major contributor to their happiness. Therefore, mental health practitioners must have an understanding of how to help older adults diagnosed with a serious mental illness reach their optimal potential as enrollment continues to increase in mental health day programs. The intent of this study was to better understand mental health day program caregiver’s experience in working with this population and to provide a description of what a mental health day program was like for the mentally ill residents under their care. The first task was facilitated by semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Secondly, a set of more survey-based questions were added to the interview design in an attempt to set the contextual stage of the described experience. It was believed that combined data would provide a more in depth perspective and set the stage to better explore the caregiver experience. Moreover, this approach is consistent with the generic qualitative method, which allows survey data to be integrated with interview data; in this case to help produce the work context of the caregiver. The combined data would then include attitudes, values, opinions and perspective on what works, what does not work and what could work better in relation to their work with this population. Using a data-driven, inductive coding model advocated by Boyatzis (1998) for conducting thematic analysis, three stages were developed: Stage 1. Sampling and design; Stage 2. Developing themes and codes; and Stage 3. Validating the use of the code. The results of this analysis yielded a total of 33 codes and 299 coded segments (participant comments coded). As a result, three themes were derived from the 12 patterns: 1) Caregivers’ Attitude towards Mental Health Day Programming, 2) Value that Caregivers Found within Mental Health Day Programs and 3) Caregivers’ Thoughts, Opinions and Feelings of Necessary Programmatic Model and Services. The original intent of his study was to determine 1.) how residential caregivers perceive specific characteristics or services as being an essential part of a mental health day program based upon their experience in working with older adult residents who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, 2.) whether identified services describe a particular mental health day program model or approach (Clubhouse, Psychosocial Rehabilitation or Rehabilitation Skills Training, or Peer/Consumer-Run) that would be the best program fit for older adults diagnosed with a serious mental illness, and 3.) the personal care home caregivers’ perception of how these services are expected to: provide stimulation and a desire for older adults to learn or grow; create an opportunity for older adults to be a part of the program; and promote older adults in taking part or engaging program activities are addressed. However, it was soon apparent that this type of evaluative research was well beyond the scope of the dissertation. Consequently, a less evaluative and more general descriptive qualitative approach was undertaken wherein the focus was changed with the attempt to 1.) better understand mental health day program caregiver’s experience in working with this population, 2.) provide a description of what mental health day programming was like for the mentally ill residents under their care, and 3.) set the contextual stage of the described experience. To the extent that this objective was met was left to the eye of the beholder, but it was hoped that the results would set the stage and lay the groundwork for the next step of the more evaluative approach abandoned for the generic qualitative descriptive study that follows. Thus the original intent was included here given the adage that the best evaluation is always description (Patton, 2008).

Abstract:

Guided Autobiography is a process of writing, sharing and preserving one’s life stories and life experiences. It leads one down a path through vast stores of memories, leading to an increased awareness and appreciation of having lived through so much.

The purpose of this study was to adapt Birren’s Guided Autobiography (GAB) program for U. S. veterans 65 years of age and older. The themes developed for this study were based on Birren’s nine themes for conducting autobiography groups. It was tailored to include themes relevant to older adult war veterans. Local veterans were interviewed and asked about past war experiences. The responses were recorded and analyzed using qualitative research methods. GAB serves to assist Gerontologists, Social Workers and other Health Practitioners in that it helps to provide insight into veterans’ experiences.

Both aging and longevity are decisive phenomena on various fields of personal and social life. Those phenomena, in turn, require the formation of qualified professionals to assist elderly people, like the physiotherapist. There are two ways of dealing with the elderly population: The first is the geriatric physiotherapy , focused on treatment and prevention of aging/old-age diseases; the second one is gerontologic physiotherapy , whose approach, being based on gerontology, involves, besides aging diseases treatment and prevention mode, the utilization of a perspective where the elderly is seen in a integral manner, considering her or his biological, psychological and social aspects. The differentiation is necessary and complex; it has contributed to the delimitation of the central objectives of this dissertation, that is to say, to situate Gerontologic Physiotherapy inside Physiotherapy, as well as to identify the characteristics of assistance in Gerontologic Physiotherapy. The method chosen was qualitative assessment, with exploratory-descriptive profile; for data collection, have been selected case study and participative observation , both longitudinally conducted under the perspective of gerontologic physiotherapy, involving 22 assistances on a female patient, 94 years old, widow, 4 children, housewife, congestive cardiac insufficiency (CCI), pain in the knee. Although specific, the outcomes were significant, involving, among other aspects, what could be called rebirth . Thus, the patient became lady of her desires , re-appropriating herself of the wishing condition, often denied to the elderly, despite the fact that such condition is age-independent. The investigation has demonstrated that whenever the physiotherapist orients her or himself after gerontologic physiotherapy s principles, the outcomes are quite satisfactory for physical, as well as for social, psychological, and existential aspects

The origins of this present investigation came from the need for a theoretical and methodological immersion about problems inside the Gerontology and the Law relationship like interdisciplinary exercise. The concrete evidences roots of this study are concentrated in the quest about the understanding the phenomenon of absencepresence and (in) visibility of law practices from of elderly people in the Judiciary staff in Palmas, Tocantins brazilian province. Palmas is the fifth highest incidence of deaths from unnatural causes among the elderly by search results point in the national researches. Phenomena like violence, abandonment, effectiveness of public policies absence directed to older people sometimes invisible or visible on purpose occurs. To understand this phenomenon and design the combat actions from the Legal Field is the problem of it research. The methodologic work with the researches feedback contributions who use as support historical criticism and hermeneutics optics. From the contribution of historians, sociologists, philosophers, educators, and many researchers that fight to transform the Gerontology as a field of study and action could rise by the documents, bibliographies and cleavage violence in the legal actions direct for to the oldest people, and the same time search these operation and results. Tocantins results like a hybrid space constructed by the associations adopted in the political arena, full of invisible borders demarcated by groups of stakeholders representatives of the economic, cultural, political, religious, educational and law. How is tackled in this hybrid society from the field of law about violence against the elderly? Where are the visible practices and why public policies seem to be silenced? The exploratory aspect study is necessary because it is a first-year academic diligence on the applicability of laws among the elderly from the phenomenon of violence. In exploratory evidence implies to reveal the phenomena like a corpus legalis and it locus, the Judiciary Field. And the other loci of divers fields who presume to act in the fighting and prevention. For the constant reflection exercise hunched over documents, police reports and the ordinary pressure to solve practical everyday problems are important signals about - how to work with the multi-referential approach in the Judiciary Field and even the attempts to establish an Interdisciplinary help relation to the Law and Gerontology in combat of violence against the elderly

Nowadays, many of us are getting old and living as elderly for a long time, a fact evidenced in the academic environment, media, public in general and various statistics. This perception is accompanied by the production of discourses on many areas concerning good aging and a good elderliness. These discourses permeate themselves and some of them gain hegemony over others. But which meanings we find on the discourse about aging in the modernity? Do they respond to what? Would there be an equation that leads us unequivocally to the results preconized by this good old-age? Using the psychoanalysis theorical framework in the subject's constitution and exercise of singularities and mainly, D.W.Winnicottt's concept of creativity, we listen to potters and their meanings of growing old, their perception of time, their cravings, and their changes. From these testimonials, we reflected on the contemporary aging and the possibility of exercise the subjectivities in the elderliness. There were conducted three in-depth interviews besides a pilot. The reports were analyzed into the perspective presented by C. Geertz. It means, interviewers discourse was taken as first interpretation and from which I sought the underlying meanings, those are not necessarily expressed by the action narration but through the personal readings, traversed by the culture which a person belongs. Bringing these artists discourses to light, it was possible to find perspectives, not about good or bad old-age, but an elderliness that pertains to the individual who lives it and an elderliness that produces belonging to life, society and culture, in which is inserted the elderly

It is characterized by a longitudinal data collection on two different occasions, the first being in the years 2000 to 2002, to understand the impact on the lives of people who assume the role of caregiver for an elderly dependent family. The second, which constitutes the first step of this methodological study, in the years 2006 to 2008, with the main objective of seeking to understand the meanings of care and loss for family caregivers of elderly dependent vascular accident, whose family care had died. The criteria for inclusion of subjects are: family caregivers of patients 50 years or more, carrying sequelae of stroke with three to six months after the episode, they need care, from hospitals of the Unified Health System , residents Sao Paulo, composing the universe of 50 cases at first. In the second phase of research (2006-2008), this universe previously studied 13 elderly care had died, five cases were excluded due to refusal of caregivers to participate in the interviews to form the research group of eight women, with six wives / widows and 2 daughters.
