Abstract:
Representing the first substantial English-language text on industrial archaeology in a decade, this volume comes at a time when the global impact of industrialization is being reassessed in terms of its legacy of climate change, mechanization, urbanization, the forced migration of peoples, particularly enslaved Africans, and labour relations. Critical debates around the beginning of a new geological era—the Anthropocene—have emerged over the last decade. This approach interrogates the widespread exploitation of natural resources that forged industrialization from its early emergence in eighteenth-century northern Europe to its contemporary ubiquity, environmental impacts, and social legacy within our globalized world. Through a broad international and multi-period set of chapters, this volume explores the complex origins, processes, and development of industrialization through its physical remains and human consequences—both the good and the bad. It provides a diverse material framework for understanding our modern world from its industrial origins through its future paths over the third decade of the twenty-first century.

Bradley, Richard, Colin Haselgrove, Marc Vander Linden, and Leo Webley. The Later Prehistory of North-West Europe. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199659777.001.0001.

Abstract:
The Later Prehistory of North-West Europe provides a unique, up-to-date, and easily accessible synthesis of the later prehistoric archaeology of north-west Europe, transcending political and language barriers that can hinder understanding. By surveying changes in social forms, landscape organization, monument types, and ritual practices over six millennia, the volume reassesses the prehistory of north-west Europe from the late Mesolithic to the end of the pre-Roman Iron Age. It explores how far common patterns of social development are apparent across north-west Europe, and whether there were periods when local differences were emphasized instead. In relation to this, it also examines changes through time in the main axes of contact between the various regions of continental Europe, Britain, and Ireland. Key to the volume's broad scope is its focus on the vast mass of new evidence provided by recent development-led excavations. The authors collate data that has been gathered on thousands of sites across Britain, Ireland, northern France, the Low Countries, western Germany, and Denmark, using sources including unpublished 'grey literature' reports. The results challenge many aspects of previous narratives of later prehistory, allowing the volume to present a distinctively fresh perspective.

Jensen, Anne M. Archaeology of the Late Western Thule/Iñupiat in North Alaska (. 1300–1750). Edited by Max Friesen and Owen Mason. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199766956.013.27.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter covers the Late Western Thule (LWT) and precontact Iñupiat of Northern Alaska, the most recent archaeological manifestation of the Northern Maritime tradition. From a maritime-adapted, whale-hunting culture living in semisubterranean sod-covered houses, this culture expanded to include inland settlements along rivers and in caribou hunting regions. The chronology of the LWT period is refined, based on recent advances in dating and many new dates. Other topics covered include settlement patterns and demography, technology, trade, architecture, social relations, mortuary practices, and the history and effects of contact with Euro-Americans. Several unresolved questions, including climate-change effects, the existence and nature of resource stress, and factors governing interior occupation are highlighted.
