Abstract:
AbstractThe theme of this edition is community development in the North Australian region. The articles included discuss ways of advancing positive community involvement, and report on a range of issues that impact on community development. Social Context theory is presented as a tool of analysis for examining social changes and associated needs among individuals in societies over time. The concept of community development has particular relevance to the fields of psychology, social psychology, and community services, because individuals look to the availability of community involvement options, and the potential they offer, for accessing social activities and social support networks. Social Context theory is therefore central to community development.

Abstract:
Several articles published in this journal over a number of years have examined the social dimensions of Gibsonian ecological psychology. The present paper picks up several of their themes, with an emphasis on the social developmental consequences of individuals participating in community structures and engaging the affordances that support them. From this perspective, the situated nature of activity in everyday settings is examined, which in turn highlights the role of places as higher order emergent eco-psychological structures (or behavior settings) in everyday life. Moreover, ecological psychology’s discovery of occluding edge effects, which demonstrates that objects that have gone out of sight are experienced as persisting in awareness, serves as the basis for a proposal that the awareness of social structures of a conceptual nature may arise from the pragmatics of perception–action from an ecological perspective.

Abstract:
Community psychology has developed in other parts of the world, but not in the UK. We contrast the development of psychology, in its wider social context, between 1960 and 1980 in the UK and the USA, in order to try to understand some of the reasons for the absence of community psychology in the UK A scheme of enquiry is proposed which includes exploration of the different social policy contexts; ways in which the ideological and theoretical character ofpsychology equipped psychologists to use opportunities arising in the broader social context; analysis of the availability of appropriately oriented psychology graduates; and the relative absence of other community orientated workers. It is argued that each of these factors illuminates key differences between the USA and the UK in terms of the development of community psychology. It is suggested that contemporary social conditions in the UK may facilitate moves towards a more community-focused psychology.

Abstract:
This article analyses the issues of the deinstitutionalization of youth, and the development of community based services, using some historical data and some of the principles of community psychology. The basic premise is that there is no such thing as a social vacuum. All programs are implemented and function in an elaborate social context.
