Abstract:
This book focuses on the referendums against water privatization in Italy and explores how activists took to social media, ultimately convincing twenty-seven million citizens to vote. Investigating the relationship between social movements and internet-related activism during complex campaigns, this book examines how a technological evolution — the increased relevance of social media platforms — affected in very different ways organizations with divergent characteristics, promoting at the same time decentralized communication practices, and new ways of coordinating dispersed communities of people. Matteo Cernison combines and adapts a wide set of methods, from social network analysis to digital ethnography, in order to explore in detail how digital activism and face-to-face initiatives interact and overlap. He argues that the geographical scale of actions, the role played by external media professionals, and the activists’ perceptions of digital technologies are key elements that contribute in a significant way to shape the very different communication practices often described as online activism.

Abstract:
Catholic Social Activism asks a number of questions regarding Catholic faith and politics: How have American laypeople responded to contentious political moments, including times of war, severe economic trouble, human rights abuses, environmental degradation, and encounters with refugees fleeing these problems? How have they interpreted official church documents and translated them into progressive action for immigrant rights and women’s rights? And how have their movements influenced religious leaders and Catholic Social Teachings? Drawing upon in-depth interviews with activists, archival documents, and secondary resources, the book captures the lived religious experiences of progressive American Catholic activists. It explores how their faith has led them to innovative and sometimes controversial engagement in various movements, including the Catholic Worker, the United Farm Workers, peace movements, Catholic feminism, the Central America solidarity movement, the Sanctuary movement, and the environmental movement. The book argues that these activists have shaped the landscape of American Catholicism and pressured the Catholic hierarchy from below, often prompting them to take a stand and articulate the theological bases for social justice. In compelling prose, the book uncovers the progressive and sometimes radical history of American Catholics, whose stories have for too long remained on the margins of public awareness.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the history of social activism in sociolinguistics, with a particular focus on efforts in the United States. It exemplifies ways that the study of sociolinguistics is critical for increased social justice and social change, and demonstrates how sociolinguistic models might better reflect a social justice framework if they are co-constructed by linguists and the communities in which they learn and teach. At the heart of a linguistics-centered social justice framework is the most basic right of a speaker: the right to speak his or her language of choice at all times. Sociolinguistics has made great advances in helping to demonstrate the links between language use and social justice across racial and cultural groups.

Abstract:
This book presents a theory of corporate campaigns in which activists use campaigns as a means of harming a firm’s reputation in hope of motivating it to increase its private regulation—corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities aimed at reducing negative externalities or other forms of social harm caused by the firm. The analysis is dynamic in nature because interactions between activists and firms unfold over time. This captures the idea that a firm’s reputation is an asset that can be built or harmed over time. As a firm’s reputation grows, the firm tends to coast on its reputation by reducing its private regulation. This explains why a pragmatic activist—one who cares about the outcome of private regulation and not about the firm’s reputation per se—would find it worthwhile to harm the firm’s reputation. Chapter 2 lays out a three-period model of corporate campaigns to build intuition about the interaction of the activist and the firm. Chapter 3 extends the model to an infinite horizon and allows the activist to use various tactics: criticism, which has a potentially mild impact on the firm’s reputation; confrontation, which can cause a reputational crisis in which the firm’s reputation can be dramatically impaired; and rewards, which increase a firm’s reputation. Chapter 4 analyzes whether the presence of the activist increases or diminishes social welfare. Chapter 5 explores how the activist would choose among potential target firms in the context of different forms of competition between firms. Chapter 6 summarizes and offers lessons for scholars and practitioners.
