Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction: Soccer is the most popular sport in Brazil and worldwide, but there is insufficient data on the eye health of soccer players, and eye conditions may affect the well-being and performance of these athletes. Objective: To perform an ocular evaluation of a representative sample of professional soccer players from Brazil. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted over four consecutive years (2009-2012) at a single professional soccer club in Brazil. The ophthalmology evaluation was performed by the same ophthalmologist in each sample. Prior to the ophthalmology evaluation, all participants filled out a questionnaire to provide the following demographic data: age, position, use of contact lenses or ophthalmic drugs, symptoms, previous ocular surgery, and date of the last ophthalmology evaluation. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) and color vision were tested during the ophthalmologic examination, and ophthalmoscopy and biomicroscopy exams were performed. Results: One hundred and twenty bilateral ophthalmology evaluations were performed in 84 professional soccer players between 2009 and 2012. Pinguecula and pterygium were the most common conditions found in the athletes’ biomicroscopy exams, corresponding to 63% (38/60) and 17% (10/60) of abnormalities, respectively. In the contrast sensitivity evaluation, only one athlete was color blind. No significant associations were found between the position of the athlete and the results of the biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy exams. Conclusion: Despite the high prevalence of abnormalities found in the ophthalmology evaluation, most refractive abnormalities did not require correction, and the biomicroscopy abnormalities were mostly benign. Level III; Study of non-consecutive patients.

Abstract:
In this paper we propose a DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) based ranking for Brazilian soccer teams. Ranking is a major issue for the soccer clubs, either when looking for sponsorship or expanding their supportive group. We first include value judgements, applying a method to consolidate the results of the national and international matches. Then we use both aggregate results as outputs for applying the DEA model. Rankings published by the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF) and 'Placar', a traditional sports magazine, do not give any credit to international titles and national cups, focusing only on the results in the National League. We compare the DEA ranking with the Federation's and the magazine's, raising some controversial issues and drawing unexpected conclusions.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study was to identify the morphological configuration of youth athletes from professional soccer clubs and to verify their differences according to the tactical position on the field. Overall, 67 male players aged 15 to 17 years were evaluated. The examined anthropometric measurements included body mass, body height, skinfolds (triceps, subscapular, supraspinal and medial calf), girths (flexed and tensed arm and calf) and breadths (humerus and femur). For statistical purposes, analysis of variance and post hoc Bonferroni and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. We concluded that goalkeepers were heavier and taller than center backs (p = 0.015 and p = 0.001), midfielders (p = 0.005 and p <0.001) and center forward players (p = 0.024 and p <0.001). The average somatotype for defense, forward and goalkeeper positions was a balanced mesomorph. Midfield players showed ectomorphic-mesomorph characteristics. It was concluded that goalkeepers were characterized as being taller and heavier and that somatotype features of athletes were similar between positions, except for midfield players

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to perform a survey about the prevalence, type and location of the injuries occurred in athletes of different modalities during the 53th Regional Games held in 2009. A total of 182 injured athletes being treated at the physical therapy clinic were included. Physical Therapy evaluation was performed to determine the anatomic location and type of injury, as well the sport modality. The results showed that mean age, height, weight and BMI were 23 years (±5.9), 1.73 m (±0.11), 71 kg (±14.22) and 24 kg/m² (±4) respectively. Proportionality to the number of athletes, handball athletes presented with higher number of injuries (4.25%), followed by indoor soccer players (3.7%), basketball (2.48%), volleyball (1.72%) and soccer (1.63%). The most common type of injury were sprains with 29.7% of cases (n=54) and mostly from soccer players; followed by contracture - 26.9% (n=49), mostly from basketball players; and contusion -25.8% (n=47), mostly from handball and indoor soccer players. The type of injury showed a significant association with the sports modality (p=0.0016). The lower limbs accounted for 71.4% of all injuries including knee (23.1%), ankle (18.1%), thigh (17.0%), leg (10.4%) and spine (9.9%). Preventive actions to avoid athletes' injury should be implemented in order to reduce the number of injuries in sports competitions such as in the Regional Games.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
The hosting of 2014 FIFA World CupTM was an ideal opportunity for Brazil to enhance its international image. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact on Brazil and on Rio de Janeiro (as a host city and major tourist destination) of mainstream media reporting on the hosting of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM. It provides a picture of how Brazil and Rio de Janeiro were reported in selected newspapers at different stages of the event: pre-, lead-up, during, and post- the 2014 World Cup. The study also seeks to ascertain whether the major objectives of the Brazil World Cup bid were met in the hosting of this mega-event. A media content analysis was conducted in four key tourism markets: Argentina, USA, Germany and Portugal. These countries were chosen because they represent Brazil’s main tourism markets and reported significant numbers of ticket sales for the event. The methodology used was qualitative analysis, including content sourcing, content identification and the use of Leximancer, an analytic tool for large amounts of textual data. The study examined online newspapers with the largest readership and circulation numbers in the selected markets. In total, 1961 online newspaper articles relevant to Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM were analysed. The findings revealed both positive and negative sentiments associated with Brazil’s hosting of the event. A key finding from the analysis was that for all markets, there was a shift from relatively positive sentiment in the pre-World Cup period, to more negative sentiment in the lead-up, followed by a return to positive sentiment during and after the World Cup. Having shifted to a more negative view leading up to and during the event, the USA market was dominated by media attention to social unrest and corruption. The period immediately prior to the tournament recorded an increase in both positive and negative media coverage in the US, German and Portuguese markets, but became more positive in the Argentinian market. Thus, the lead-up period was particularly significant in all markets. Safety and security concerns expressed in the lead-up period decreased significantly during the hosting and post- periods, and a positive image of the country was noticeable in the international media. Therefore, while the positive sentiments emerging during the event should be capitalised on, Brazil should also address the lurking concerns and negative perceptions that continue despite its successful hosting of the mega-event. By doing this the nation can consolidate its brand’s position in a sustained and positive way. As different reporting tones were noticed in the different markets across the time periods, it becomes important to consider these changes in the future event marketing and positioning of Rio de Janeiro as the leading tourism destination and events capital for Brazil, especially in relation to Rio de Janeiro’s hosting of future events.

This paper purpose is to study the possible impact that emotional biases might have on voters’ judgements when we use a retrospective voting framework. In order to do so we use soccer as the instrument that may influence mood and emotions. Our fixed effect models show that wins on the election weekend are associated with a increase in incumbent voting, indicating that emotional biases (and soccer) may, in fact, influence voters.

Abstract:
In the present Masters thesis, we intend to present a few discourse and enunciation markers which have been the result of the analysis of the description of soccer goals in matches between Argentinian and Brazilian teams, extracted from mass media of these two countries. The observation of these descriptions has led us to recognize two voices, one more associated to a professional sportscaster and another with features closer to those of a soccer fan (torcedor or hincha). We have focused on the latter, and based on these utterances we found both common and different features which we have linked to sociohistorical aspects of each country. We started our work by proposing a historical path which starts with the appearance of soccer in the XIX century and proceeds with the arrival of the sport in Brazil and Argentina, the creation of clubs, the process of massification of the game and its spectacularization by the radio and the printed media, already in the 1930s. Along the way, we also present some aspects of the social background of the cities of Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Rio, primarily with those related to the popularization of soccer, the creation and the different kinds of soccer crowds, and the characteristics of the soccer fan (torcedor/hincha). As our theoretical framework we will draw on the concept of ethos, elaborated by D. Maingueneau, and the characteristics of the Speaker and the utterer, proposed by O. Ducrot, and of the Speaker and of the x-speaker, proposed by E. Guimarães. On the other hand, we point out the importance of the sportscaster in the production of the material to be analyzed, and we propose the category of subgenre for the description of goals, in order to attempt to explain it based on the conceptualization of discourse genres in M. Bakhtin. Finally, we indicate some characteristics which might link the discourse-related results found to the sociohistorical panorama shown in the present work.

Abstract:
The variability and diversity of intentionally performed physical activities influenced the range of human interactions that went through constant evolutionary processes, to constitute true social phenomenal. One of them, sport, the result of the capacity for metamorphosis and adaptability, has a global and institutionalized scope, promoting systemic transformations in society. The use of financial and sports performance indicators is intended to promote greater variability of information that can lead to better decision-making. Recent literature perceives the need to combine areas of knowledge in order to achieve a greater degree of understanding about a complex phenomenon such as soccer, with regard to a holistic view of integrality. The proposed literature review was divided into five parts that support the theoretical scope of this research, in order to expand the possibilities of discussion that can guide the proposed purposes. The main objective of the dissertation was to evaluate sports performance and its association on financial and economic indicators in Brazilian soccer clubs, from 2014 to 2018 in the Brazilian Soccer Championship Series A. The selected sample was the income statements in exercise of 11 Brazilian teams that remained for five years in the elite of the most important national competition in the country. For data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. With regard to descriptive analyses, quantitative variables were presented based on their absolute numbers and percentages, as the case may be, as well as the measures of central tendency, notably the average, were calculated. For inferential analyses, which sought to verify the relationship between the dependent variable performance and economic-financial indicators, Pearson's correlation was use. The results presented demonstrate that the financial performance indicators used show a positive association with sports performance variables, specifically, scores. The success of sports entities is multifactorial, however it was possible to observe that financial indicators are a fundamental part of the managerial and strategic structure of football clubs.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the implications for football cultures of the profound socio-economic changes that Brazil has experienced in the last decade. It explores two major impacts: the economic boom of the domestic football sector, and the large-scale adoption of new technologies in fans' activities. The study identified a new phase of football culture in Brazil, characterised by the domination of market logics and intense commercialisation. The empirical findings also showed that new technologies are changing how supporters coordinate activities that challenge the gentrification of the game.

This work investigates how to set appointments among supporters and fans and what implications can be seen in their performances in the context of spectacularized soccer. Here, it is understood that there is a game going on in the soccer bleachers, where the performances of fans and supporters are communicated to the audience, but also transmitted to an indefinite number of people watching, for example, on television. This game is a cultural phenomenon (is maintained even after processing) and acts parallel to what is played on the field (the soccer match itself), containing similar agonistic elements. Disputes usually circulate around the various ways of being in the game. These differences are expressed in the ways cheer, sing, vibrate, which use the stadium, the places they choose to attend soccer matches, among other ways. This research is anthropological, mainly using up of participant observation and interviews with members of a crowd of âCeara Sporting Clubâ called âSetor Alvinegroâ. This crowd is named as "torcida de alento" a new meaning from the conduction another habitus to fans, as opposed to a model understood by them as traditional supporters. The approach of the game occurs in face to face interactions, usually in stages, based on a phenomenological perspective, from Schutz, and interactionism, from the influences of Simmel and Goffman. In this game, the various supporters (here understood as teams) lay pipelines (ideologies) to be performing during interactions, which creates conditions for disputes by recognition, space and power. In the meantime these disputes and attempts to appointments, there is a latent moral supporter, as thread that also allows the event of a competition around the universalization of a way of playing the game, as if there were a "real" way to demonstrate your passion for a soccer team.

Abstract:
Athletes participating in professional soccer are at an increased risk for long-term neurologic disease due to exposure of repetitive head trauma (MacKay et al., 2019). Recent studies have confirmed cases of dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy in retired professional soccer players who played during 1966 (McKee et al., 2014; Hales et al., 2014; Bieniek et al., 2015; Ling et al., 2017; Grinberg et al., 2016). It is suspected that repetitive sub concussive impacts from heading may be a contributing factor to the development of chronic neurological deficits (Matser et al., 1998; Witol & Webbe, 2003). It is unknown if current soccer players are at similar risk of brain trauma. Differences of soccer balls, rules changes, and evolution of the game, may have influenced total frequency and impact magnitude of heading. A comparison of frequency and impact magnitude of heading between 1966 and 2018, highlights the potential risk of chronic neurodegeneration in professional soccer players. Ten 1966 and ten 2018 FIFA World Cup matches were randomly chosen for video analysis. Total frequency of headers were documented for each game. Header exemplar reconstructions were completed in the laboratory using a 1966 Slazenger Challenge and 2018 Telstar 18 ball. A pneumatic linear impactor and projectile launcher were used to hit the ball and impact a Hybrid III head form to measure dynamic head response. A finite element model was then used to determine heading magnitudes as measured by Maximal Principal Strain (MPS). The study revealed there were no significant differences in overall frequency of headers between the 1966 and 2018 games. The year 2018 had significantly higher frequency of headers in the medium MPS category while, 1966 had significantly higher frequency in the high category. There were no significant differences of linear acceleration, angular acceleration, and MPS values when comparing the 2018 dry and 1966 dry ball at the same velocity and location. Current athletes who are heading the 2018 Telstar 18 are sustaining similar frequency and magnitudes of heading as athletes in 1966 under the same velocity and impact locations.

Abstract:
Soccer is one of the most popular and passionate sports in the world, and in Brazil it's no different. Soccer clubs are true national passions, mobilizing crowds of fans who follow and support their teams unconditionally. However, in recent years, with the advance of digital technologies, the relationship between clubs and fans has undergone profound transformations, and the possibilities for interaction between both parties have expanded considerably. In this context, Web3 technologies have gained increasing prominence and promise to revolutionize the way Brazilian soccer clubs relate to their fans. Web3 technologies are an evolution of previous web technologies (Web1 and Web2), and are characterized by allowing the creation of decentralized applications and platforms, based on blockchain, which can be used for a variety of purposes, from developing new forms of payment to creating voting systems and collaborative governance. In the context of sport, especially soccer, the possibilities are vast, and an elite Brazilian soccer club can benefit enormously from using these technologies to bring its fans closer together and generate new revenue.

Abstract:
Background: Neurodegenerative diseases have been reported in contact sports athletes. However, soccer has not been well characterized. Concerns were raised about the risk of neurodegenerative diseases being related to professional players in this sport. Objectives: To compare mortality from neurodegenerative diseases among Brazilian soccer players with the general population of the country. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study. Causes of death were obtained from Brazilian teams’ databases and online content/public domain. Results: Among 1331 soccer players, 400 died. Acute Myocardial Infarction and Neoplasms were the highest causes of death, 58 and 53, respectively. We obtained a total of 35 deaths caused by neurodegenerative diseases. Alzheimer’s disease (18 deaths) and Stroke (14 deaths) were the most prevalent causes. These results are similar to the causes most found in the general population of Brazil: ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, airway infections and Alzheimer’s, in that order. This research had the following aspects as a limitation: the sources used were laymen, so the causes of death were not presented in a technical way in some moments; furthermore, the sampling space, still reduced, presented itself as another limitation. Conclusion: Preliminary results showed no correlation between soccer in Brazil and the higher occurrence of neurodegenerative diseases. The data sources and the sample space that were used may have contributed to such conclusions. These observations need to be confirmed on a larger scale with the prolongation of the study.

Abstract:
Abstract In this study, we employ a finite element analysis to determine brain injury risks resulting from impacts caused by a soccer ball to the player’s head at various ball inflations. The repetitive ball-head impacts in soccer are a cause for concern considering the literature showing neurodegeneration in soccer pressures. Standard soccer ball inflation pressurizations for a size 5 ball are in-between approximately 60kPa and 110kPa; the effect of these pressurizations on injury risks has not been widely studied. This finite element analysis implements previously validated finite element models of an adult 50th percentile human head and regulation size 5 soccer ball. The results of the simulations are evaluated using existing kinematic injury metrics (HIC15 and BrIC) and peak pressure, Von Mises stress, and maximum principal strain values throughout the brain. The results of our simulations show increasing HIC15, peak pressure, and peak maximum principal strain values for increased ball pressurizations. It is found that increasing the ball pressure increases the rate of energy transfer from the soccer ball to the head, which translates to higher injury metrics and brain stresses and strains. Additionally, the peak contact area between the soccer ball and the head is inversely proportional to the ball pressurizations. Increasing soccer ball inflation pressures can lead to increased brain injury risks due to soccer heading.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to evaluate the extent of damage to the brain in regard to concussions when female soccer players head the ball to pass, defend, and score goals. It is reported that female soccer players have higher concussion rates than male players, which is why they will be the focus of this study. The anatomy of the female body seems to be structured in a way that increases the risk of concussions, but that has not been verified yet. While many clinical studies document post-concussion results, our research evaluates the impact of the soccer ball during active play both computationally and experimentally. The force from the ball hitting the head and the resulting acceleration of the brain are analyzed. First, the head accelerations and corresponding HIC (Head Injury Criterion) values are obtained using computational programming. Then, a newly developed experimental framework is used to track the head acceleration using an accelerometer. The velocity and angle at which the ball makes contact with the head are measured using a projectile motion and time-lapse imaging technique. The results of heading the ball in different kick scenarios are compared with the threshold HIC values for concussions.
