Abstract:
During the twentieth century, men and women across Ireland picked up cameras, photographing days out at the beach, composing views of Ireland’s cities and countryside, and recording political events as they witnessed them. Indeed, while foreign photographers often focused on the image of Ireland as a bucolic rural landscape, Irish photographers—snapshotter and professional alike—were creating and curating photographs of Ireland which revealed more complex and diverse images of Ireland. Snapshot Stories explores these stories. It examines a diverse array of photographic sources, including family photograph albums, studio portraits, and the work of photography clubs and community photography initiatives, alongside the output of those who took their cameras into the streets to record violence and poverty. It shows how Irish men and women used photography in order to explore their sense of self and society, and examines how we can use these images to fill in the details of Ireland’s social history. Through exploring this rich array of sources, it asks what it means to see—to look, to gaze, to glance—in modern Ireland, and explores how conflicts regarding vision and visuality have repeatedly been at the centre of Irish life.

Meyer, Stephen C., and Kirsten Yri, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Music and Medievalism. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190658441.001.0001.

Abstract:
Medievalism—broadly construed as the retrospective immersion in the images, sounds, narratives, and ideologies of the European Middle Ages—has left a powerful mark in both art music and popular music culture of the past two centuries. The Oxford Handbook of Music and Medievalism provides a snapshot of the growing field of medievalism in music by bringing together international scholars to explore a wide variety of past and present genres in which medievalism is present. The handbook is organized into six sections and takes up musical topics in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, in genres as far reaching as opera, orchestral music, film, musicals, heavy metal, folk rock, and video games.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on a type of Beijing narrative that seizes instants in the floating, ephemeral, modern urban life while conveying an affective mapping of the city, its people, traditional charm, flow of emotions, and social manners. Serialized in literary supplements of newspapers, these writings became enormously popular between the 1920s and the 1930s. Zhang Henshui’s work represents the peak of the accomplishments in this subgenre. His Beijing romance explores a wide range of topics—from material culture of everyday life to cultural debates of the time, from family sagas to street gossip, from warlords’ cruelty to chivalric assassination—all of which register the transitional symptoms and long-lasting pains and sorrows in modern Beijing during the chaotic Warlord Era. From the courtesan house to the grand mansion, from zigzag alleyways to Heaven’s Bridge, Zhang Henshui anchors diversified urban locales and cultural sites and maps the spatial traces of his literary characters’ sentimental education in his urban images and imaginations, which amount to a subtle combination of realist depiction and romantic emplotment.

Lopes, Dominic McIver. Directive Pictures. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198796657.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
Pictures are principally descriptive. Advertising images highlight features of potential purchases; cartoons open portals to scenes in fictional worlds; snapshots in the family photo album remind us of our past selves and landmark events in our personal histories; works of pictorial art express thoughts or feelings about depicted scenes. In addition, pictures serve a directive or action-guiding function that, though not taken into account by theorists, deserves no less attention than their descriptive one. Theories of depiction and the appreciation of pictures stand to benefit by taking ‘directive pictures’ into account, as do theories of representation in general and mental representation in particular.

Abstract:
This chapter contextualizes and theoreticizes the literary topography of space and emotion, the (de)formation of modern subjectivity, individual desire and collective consciousness, political conflicts and historical violence, as well as nationalist sentiments and cultural memories centering around Beijing, the ancient capital and modern city, which has framed the material infrastructures, human conditions, mental images, political regimes, cultural identities, and literary imaginations from the late Imperial and Republican periods to the Cold War era and after. I consider five modes of creating a city-text that fashion Beijing: (1) a warped hometown, (2) a city of snapshots and manners, (3) an aesthetic city, (4) an imperial capital in comparative and cross-cultural perspective, and (5) a displaced and relocated city on the Sinophone and diasporic postmemory. Each method of imagining Beijing provides a unique entry point into the nexus of urban settings, archives of emotions, and strategies of literary mappings in Beijing’s journey from imperial capital to socialist city.

Barbieri, William A. Toward A Multicultural Society? Edited by Helmut Walser Smith. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199237395.013.0035.

Abstract:
This article traces the multicultural German society that gradually came over after the reunification. In hosting the World Cup of 2006, Germany presented a new face to the world. The widely circulated image of the Afro-German footballer Gerald Asamoah in the publicity campaign ‘Du bist Deutschland’ advertised a Germany comfortable with its diversity and optimistic about its future prospects. The new German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, declared it time to relinquish the failed utopian dream of the multicultural society. These two snapshots reflect some of the divergent sensibilities and political forces in play as German society kicked off the twenty-first century amidst controversies over how best to come to terms with the ethnic diversity bequeathed by the ‘guest worker’ policies and various other migrations of the previous fifty years. This article further elaborates upon the conceptions of multiculturalism and the ideal and dialectics of the multicultural German society.
