Abstract:
Self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) – small retirement savings funds with four or fewer members – now manage almost one-third of retirement savings in Australia, and serve over 1 million members. The number of SMSFs has increased to more than half a million in two decades, yet little is known about the reasons people start the funds and how they operate. We use a survey of more than 500 SMSF members and 500 large superannuation fund members to analyse why SMSF members commence and manage their own fund, compared to similar people who stay with a large fund. We find that control over investments and tax minimisation are the most common reasons for starting a SMSF, while satisfaction with large funds and unwillingness to take on the administrative burden of self-management are the most common reasons for not doing so. SMSF members do not show any greater financial skills than non-members, but they do display overconfidence, a higher risk tolerance and a more trusting attitude to financial professionals. Model results show that the majority of SMSF members start their funds at the suggestion of financial professionals. We also show that those who say they are thinking about starting a SMSF are different in significant ways from the eventual SMSF members, further evidence of the influence of the advice industry.

Abstract:
AbstractSphingomyelin (SM) is among the most important biomolecules in eukaryotes and acts as both constructive components and signal carrier in physiological processes. SM is catalyzed by a membrane protein family, sphingomyelin synthases (SMSs), consisting of three members, SMS1, SMS2 and SMSr. SMSs modulate sphingomyelin and other sphingolipids levels, thereby regulating membrane mobility, ceramide-dependent apoptosis and DAG-dependent signaling pathways. SMSs was found associated with various diseases. Downregulation of SMS2 activity results in protective effects against obesity, atherosclerosis and diabetes and makes SMS2 inhibitors potential medicines. Structural guided specific drug design could be the next breakthrough, discriminating SMS2 from other homologs.

Abstract:
The problem that this paper is concerned with is High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) detection of desired targets against a complex interference background consisting of sea clutter, ionosphere clutter, Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and atmospheric noise. Eliminating unwanted echoes and exploring obscured targets contribute to achieving ideal surveillance of sea surface targets. In this paper, a Self-regulating Multi-clutter Suppression Framework (SMSF) has been proposed for small aperture HFSWR. SMSF can remove many types of clutter or RFI; meanwhile, it mines the targets merged into clutter and tracks the travelling path of the ship. In SMSF, a novel Dynamic Threshold Mapping Recognition (DTMR) method is first proposed to reduce the atmospheric noise and recognize each type of unwanted echo; these recognized echoes are fed into the proposed Adaptive Prophase-current Dictionary Learning (APDL) algorithm. To make a comprehensive evaluation, we also designed three novel assessment parameters: Obscured Targets Detection Rate (OTDR), Clutter Purification Rate (CPR) and Erroneous Suppression Rate (ESR). The experiment data collected from a small aperture HFSWR system confirm that SMSF has precise suppression performance over most of the classical algorithms and concurrently reveals the moving targets, and OTDR of SMSF is usually higher than compared methods.

Abstract:
Background: 2-Hydroxyoleic acid (2OHOA) is particularly active against glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and successfully finished a phase I/IIA trial in patients with glioma and other advanced solid tumors. However, its mechanism of action is not fully known. Methods: The relationship between SMS1 and SMS2 expressions (mRNA) and overall survival in 329 glioma patients was investigated, and so was the correlation between SMS expression and 2OHOA’s efficacy. The opposing role of SMS isoforms in 2OHOA’s mechanism of action and in GBM cell growth, differentiation and death, was studied overexpressing or silencing them in human GBM cells. Results: Patients with high-SMS1 plus low-SMS2 expression had a 5-year survival ~10-fold higher than patients with low-SMS1 plus high-SMS2 expression. SMS1 and SMS2 also had opposing effect on GBM cell survival and 2OHOA’s IC50 correlated with basal SMS1 levels and treatment induced changes in SMS1/SMS2 ratio. SMSs expression disparately affected 2OHOA’s cancer cell proliferation, differentiation, ER-stress and autophagy. Conclusions: SMS1 and SMS2 showed opposite associations with glioma patient survival, glioma cell growth and response to 2OHOA treatment. SMSs signature could constitute a valuable prognostic biomarker, with high SMS1 and low SMS2 being a better disease prognosis. Additionally, low basal SMS1 mRNA levels predict positive response to 2OHOA.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to validate market orientation (MO) and business results scales in an area of significant interest for the literature: namely, service firms of a small and micro‐scale in a market sharing many similarities with Latin America (cultural, social and economic), specifically the Spanish rural tourism market. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of a literature review covering works specializing in MO and its impact on the service sector, and in the characteristics of small‐ and micro‐sized service firms (SMSF), a qualitative and a quantitative study are carried out in Spain, at a national level. Findings The results validate the scales and identify that MO comprises the following dimensions: information‐gathering, dissemination of information, and response to the market. The validated business results scale includes economic/financial results and others of a more personal nature linked to the entrepreneur business owner. Practical implications The work provides knowledge regarding the activities undertaken by SMSF in the area of MO. Professionals from the small‐ and micro‐sized service sector can use this knowledge to plan and design market‐focussed actions that will lead to improved business performance. Originality/value The work validates MO and business results scales that have been widely studied throughout the literature but that leave a significant gap in the case of SMSF operating in Latin American countries. The business base in these countries comprises a large percentage of such small‐scale operations.

Abstract:
SUMMARY Using proprietary Australian Taxation Office (ATO) data, this study examines audit pricing, service bundling, and independence issues in the self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) sector, the fastest growing and largest segment of the Australian $2 trillion retirement savings industry. We consider the impact of partner-level scale effects for a large sample of SMSF audits for the three years to June 2010. After controlling for factors known to determine audit fees, we find evidence of fee discounting by partners with large client portfolios. However, when the dependent variable is redefined to the total “bundle” of services (including audit and non-audit fees), the firms of partners with larger client portfolios are shown to earn bundling fee premiums. This finding suggests industry specialists price strategically using audits as a conduit to supply higher margin non-audit services (NAS) to clients with more resources. Last, we find no evidence the supply of NAS impairs auditor independence, alleviating joint supply concerns raised in the Cooper Review.

Abstract:
SMS [SM (sphingomyelin) synthase] is a class of enzymes that produces SM by transferring a phosphocholine moiety on to ceramide. PC (phosphatidylcholine) is believed to be the phosphocholine donor of the reaction with consequent production of DAG (diacylglycerol), an important bioactive lipid. In the present study, by modulating SMS1 and SMS2 expression, the role of these enzymes on the elusive regulation of DAG was investigated. Because we found that modulation of SMS1 or SMS2 did not affect total levels of endogenous DAG in resting cells, whereas they produce DAG in vitro, the possibility that SMSs could modulate subcellular pools of DAG, once acute activation of the enzymes is triggered, was investigated. Stimulation of SM synthesis was induced by either treatment with short-chain ceramide analogues or by increasing endogenous ceramide at the plasma membrane, and a fluorescently labelled conventional C1 domain [from PKC (protein kinase C)] enhanced in its DAG binding activity was used to probe subcellular pools of DAG in the cell. With this approach, we found, using confocal microscopy and subcellular fractionation, that modulation of SMS1 and, to a lesser extent, SMS2 affected the formation of DAG at the Golgi apparatus. Similarly, down-regulation of SMS1 and SMS2 reduced the localization of the DAG-binding protein PKD (protein kinase D) to the Golgi. These results provide direct evidence that both enzymes are capable of regulating the formation of DAG in cells, that this pool of DAG is biologically active, and for the first time directly implicate SMS1 and SMS2 as regulators of DAG-binding proteins in the Golgi apparatus.

Abstract:
Transferrin (Tf) endocytosis and recycling are essential for iron uptake and the regulation of cell proliferation. Tf and Tf receptor (TfR) complexes are internalized via clathrin-coated pits composed of a variety of proteins and lipids and pass through early endosomes to recycling endosomes. We investigated the role of sphingomyelin (SM) synthases (SMS1 and SMS2) in clathrin-dependent trafficking of Tf and cell proliferation. We employed SM-deficient lymphoma cells that lacked SMSs and that failed to proliferate in response to Tf. Transfection of SMS1, but not SMS2, enabled these cells to incorporate SM into the plasma membrane, restoring Tf-mediated proliferation. SM-deficient cells showed a significant reduction in clathrin-dependent Tf uptake compared with the parental SM-producing cells. Both SMS1 gene transfection and exogenous short-chain SM treatment increased clathrin-dependent Tf uptake in SM-deficient cells, with the Tf being subsequently sorted to Rab11-positive recycling endosomes. We observed trafficking of the internalized Tf to late/endolysosomal compartments, and this was not dependent on the clathrin pathway in SM-deficient cells. Thus, SMS1-mediated SM synthesis directs Tf-TfR to undergo clathrin-dependent endocytosis and recycling, promoting the proliferation of lymphoma cells.

AbstractWe observed with the Submillimeter Array and IRAM 30 m telescope three high-mass star-forming regions in different evolutionary stages in the W3 high-mass star formation complex. These regions, i.e. W3 SMS1 (W3 IRS5), SMS2 (W3 IRS4) and SMS3, are located within the same large-scale environment, which allows us to study rotation and outflows as well as chemical properties in an evolutionary sense. While we find multiple mm continuum sources toward all regions, these three subregions exhibit different dynamical and chemical properties, which indicates that they are in different evolutionary stages. Even within each sub-region, massive cores of different ages are found, e.g. in SMS2, sub-sources from the most evolved UCHii region to potential starless cores exist within 30 000 AU (left panel, Fig. 1). Outflows and rotational structures are found in SMS1 and SMS2. Evidence for interactions between the molecular cloud and the HII regions is found in the 13CO channel maps (right panel, Fig. 1), which may indicate triggered star formation.

Abstract:
This research discusses the use of Delta in regulating the investment behaviour of the Trustees of Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) who use Exchange Traded Options (ETOs) in their investment strategies. An ETO represents a contract between two parties, giving the taker (the buyer) the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a parcel of shares at a predetermined price, on or before a predetermined date, to or from the writer (the seller). It is acceptable for SMSF Trustees to use ETO investments as part of their overall investment strategy, providing that leverage or mere speculation are not the reasons behind that investment. It is important to note that neither the Regulator, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), nor its predecessor, the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA), actually state what constitutes 'speculation', or what the allowable uses for derivatives are. There are no practical guidelines. This is a key issue for this research, which aims, as practically as possible, to fill these crucial gaps. A Trustee must abide by their superannuation fund's overriding covenants and investment strategy, and inform its members, through Risk Management Statements, of the trust's derivative strategy. While ETOs can be used to manage risk, they also carry a level of risk themselves. Delta measures an ETO's value movement in correlation with a movement in the option's underlying share price. An ETO carrying a low Delta generally means a cheaper price (premium) per contract than an option carrying a higher Delta. The lower the Delta, however, the lower the chance there is of a positive result for the buyer. This research shows that an ETO Delta of less than 0.2 gives results in favour of buyers in only 11 out of 100 occurrences. This figure rises to 42 out of 100 when Delta is greater than 0.8. From the sampled data, there is an overall financial loss to the buyer of -1.91%, with the financial return results being mixed at all levels of Delta. The overall return results have been compiled without preference to market direction, and clearly highlight the natural premium bias (which the buyer pays) to the seller. What this data does is reenforce the need for Trustees to have a solid view of market directions, or a set strategy in place, as buyers of ETOs. The conclusions drawn from the findings show that the chance of loss (when buying), or gain (when selling) ETOs with a Delta of; - less than 0.20 is 89%; - less than 0.40 is 74%; - less than 0.60 is 66%; - less than 0.80 is 57%; - greater than 0.80 is 58%; For example, a Trustee buying an ETO with a Delta of less than 0.20, faces an 89% chance of loss; a Trustee selling an ETO with a Delta of less than 0.20, faces an 89% chance of gain. The findings on overall financial returns (profit or loss) offer additional support to this critical review of Delta as a risk measurement tool. Whist it is impossible to know the motives or actual positions of portfolio managers of SMSF at any time, the aim of the thesis is to provide a measurement tool that can be used to assist the trustee at any given time by measuring the option risk element alone. When interpreting the findings, the reader must remember that ETO strategies are numerous, and a high-risk profile for one strategy may represent a low risk for another. Further to this, an ETO strategy's risk profile may change with the overlaying of another ETO. For example, where a Call option is bought, the risk involved in that purchase is represented by the premium paid. However, another Call option can then be sold against that position, with a later (or earlier) date to expiry, and with a higher strike price. This 'overlay' reduces the initial risk, but impacts on the maximum gain. It is vital that Trustees have a solid understanding of the basics of ETO strategies before considering using Delta as a measure of risk. The research proposes some guidelines Trustees can use when assessing an ETO strategy against their derivative/investment risk profile. For example, a Trustee buying an ETO with a Delta of less than 0.20, faces an 89% chance of loss; a Trustee selling an ETO with a Delta of less than 0.20, faces an 89% chance of gain. (table inserted) The findings from 2400 data samples show strong trends in support of the underlying premise (see Figure: Positive Results Versus Delta (ETO Buyers) below). Given these findings, the research concludes that Delta can be used as a measure of risk by SMSF Trustees. Delta may not be suitable, however, for measuring multiple layers of combined ETO positions, a type of derivative strategy not suited to or usual in the context of measuring risk within a SMSF. (table inserted) There is a major difference between simple and simplistic solutions offering practical answers in an environment of increasing complexity. Often, simple solutions offer far more value to the less experienced, when compared to complex ones, especially given the growing number of SMSFs, and the increasing lack of expertise in the areas of superannuation and risk management that this growth implies.

Abstract:
In Peru there is a high rate of citizen insecurity. The most frequent crime is the theft of cell phones, wallets and money. Second, there is vehicle theft. In the latter case, it is striking that 75% of theft happen when they are parked. There are several methods of prevention, vehicle insurance and GPS. But what happens when a people acquires a second vehicle? Naturally, you always have an uncertainty about not knowing what is going on with your unit while it is parked. Currently, approximately 16,000 used vehicles are sold per month in Lima. Our business idea is born as a response to this unattended market, since it does not have preventive security measures that are within reach, because the companies that commercialize the GPS device are aimed at new vehicles and insurance companies tend to charge high premiums for vehicle insurance. Alert SMS is a geolocation service that is aimed at users who have a second-hand vehicle. Our service offers alerts via SMS (text messages) when someone opens the doors, when the electrical system is turned on and allows to block the electrical system with just one message, all at an affordable price.

Abstract:
Abstract The technology has made it possible for you as a train traveller to be available in other places than stations and on the train. You now have the possibility to communicate by the phone or through the Internet to get information about the train you want to take. Development in mobile technology gives us new possibilities to communication. We want to find out whatever SMS would be a suitable approach to inform passengers about delays. The problem formulation is “If the technology is available to inform the passengers about delays in an more effective way than today, then why not use it” The “Kustpilen” that operates in Blekinge and Skåne is the case for our study. To obtain a broad perspective of the problem we will be in contact with travellers as well as with the organisations, which will be involved in a feasible SMS-service. To start with, we will gather information from different literatures to provide the reader an insight in the subject and try to obtain an image of how the technology of SMS is suited within the area of traffic information. The communication with the organisations will go through interviews. This way we are able to form a better understanding about existing problems for present system to take an SMS-service in use. The result demonstrates the travellers to be very positive to SMS. What concerns the travellers mostly is that the operators, which supply the service will not manage to provide the information on time. Regarding the organisations, there is a need for changes within the system at Banverket, which communicates the information about the traffic, for a well working SMS-service to be able to take in usage. Banverket is alone to have information about the train positioning, which makes Banverket an important part of the system.

In this thesis we have made a study of SMS-payment. Our focus has been to describe and analyze the possible uses of the service as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Through the business of Mobill whose idea is to develop a payment method via SMS, we have obtained a picture of how a company invests in this technology. Our research has shown that the SMS-payments main area of use is for the so called micro payments, when paying parking fees, tickets for transportation, events or road tax. The attitude of the consumers is positive in general but there is still something missing that will enable a broader use of the service. Furthermore our study shows that the service also enables the customer to get an electronic ticket when paying tickets by SMS. This is a factor that might provide the payment method with more chance of success and further growth. However there is a significant threat to the service, provided by their competitors. These competitors are developing mobile payment systems that can be considered newer, safer and more effective than the SMS-payment and might end up being a substitution. Yet it is more questionable whether the existence of the SMS-payment is threatened. Perhaps in a long term view where even the SMS-function as a means of communicating will be considered old and ultimately end up being replaced.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents a new concept: a Shape-Morphing Space Frame (SMSF), which is a novel application utilizing the Linear Bistable Compliant Crank-Slider Mechanism (LBCCSM). The frame’s initial shape is constructed from a single-layer grid of flexures, rigid links and LBCCSMs. The grid is bent into the space frame’s initial cylindrical shape, which can morph because of the inclusion of LBCCSMs in its structure. The design parameters consist of the frame’s initial height, its tessellation pattern (including bistable elements’ placement), its initial diameter, and the final desired shape. The method used in placing the bistable elements is a novel contribution to this work as it considers the principle stress trajectories. This paper will present two different examples of Shape-Morphing Space Frames, each starting from a cylindrical-shell space frame and morphing, one to a hyperbolic-shell space frame and the other to a spherical-shell space frame, both morphing by applying moments, which shear the cylindrical shell, and forces, which change the cylinder’s radius using Poisson’s effect.

Abstract:
This paper presents a new concept: a Shape-Morphing Space Frame (SMSF) using quadrilateral bistable unit-cell elements. The unit-cells are composed of either eight-bar or seven-bar mechanisms in which design constraints, system of elimination and graph theory are used to design, as a proof of concept, a disk like structure with the ability to morph into a sphere. Or specifically, the circumference of a disk structure is approximated by a ten-sided polygon that would then morph into a hollow sphere structure that is approximated by 60-sided polyhedron. The disk-to-sphere structure is tessellated into ten sides for the latitudes circles and 12 sides for the longitude circles; the disk’s thickness and radius are chosen at the design stage. The strategy in morphing the initial shape of the structure (disk) into its final shape (sphere) is that the radial lines on the surface of the disk bend but do not stretch, whereas the circumferential lines compress. Moreover, the radial lines on the disk become longitude lines on the sphere and the circumferential lines become latitude lines on the sphere. The disk’s thickness splits in half, the upper half becomes the thickness of the upper hemisphere and the lower half becomes the thickness of the lower hemisphere. The concept was successfully prototyped and actuation forces were measured.

Abstract:
Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMSs), which were formed by deposition of precipitates from hydrothermal fluids vented from seafloor, has been expected as one of unconventional mineral resources on deep seafloors in the oceans. The authors have proposed the concept of seafloor mineral processing for SMS mining, where valuable minerals contained in SMS ores are separated on seafloor while gangue minerals are disposed on seafloor in appropriate ways. To confirm the applicability of column flotation, which is one of conventional mineral processing methods, to seafloor mineral processing, the authors carried out experiments simulating column flotation under the pressure conditions corresponding to the water depths down to 1000m in maximum using ore samples containing copper, iron, zinc and lead. In the experiments, formation of fine bubbles suitable to flotation and overflow of froth layer were observed at high pressures. The contents of copper and zinc in the concentrates recovered in the experiments at 1MPa were higher than those in the feed ores while the contents of silicon and calcium in the concentrates were lower than those in the feed ores. These results suggest that column flotation would be applicable to seafloor mineral processing.

Abstract:
Safety management in Aviation training is shaped by identification, evaluation, and measurement of the safety risks. The International Air Transportation Authority (IATA) Technology Roadmap (IATA 2022) offers a synopsis and evaluation of ongoing technology opportunities, which change the aviation environment with the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and introduction of enhanced Minimum Crew Operations (eMCO) and Single Pilot Operations (SiPO). Change management (airplane design philosophy /ergonomics) affects aviation training design philosophy. A hybrid competency-based education approach in aviation needs interaction with the aviation industry and changes in flight operations (ICAO, 2022). The performance gap of these changes concerning the aviation industry, flight operations, and training is assessed and measured through Evidence-Based Training (EBT) pilot competencies (ICAO, 2016). Safety management systems (SMSs) in aviation training present a lag in identifying and implementing Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs). Implementation of Evidence-based Safety performance indicators as conceptualized in the aviation training through SPI’s (data-based parameters from students' flights) at a theoretical and practical level, act as safety (SMS), personal development (identify pilot weakness – Human Factors), and assessment (Competency-based education) tool (ICAO, 2018).Keywords: Evidence-Based Training (EBT), Safety Management Systems (SMSs), Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs), Human Factors (HF), ergonomics, aviation training.
