Abstract:
Modern distributed services are expected to be highly available, as our societies have been growing increasingly dependent on them. The common way to achieve high availability is through the replication of data in multiple service replicas. In this way, the service remains operational in case of failures as clients can be relayed to other working replicas. In distributed systems, the classic technique to implement such fault-tolerant services is called State-Machine Replication (SMR), where a service is defined as a deterministic state-machine and each replica keeps a local copy of the machine. To guarantee that the service remains consistent, replicas coordinate with each other and agree on the order of transitions to be applied to their copies of the state-machine. The replication performed by modern Internet services spans across several geographical locations (geo-replication). This allows for increased availability and low latency, since clients can communicate with the closest geo-graphical replica. Due to their reliance on a leader replica, classical SMR protocols offer limited scalability and availability under this setting. To solve this problem, recent protocols follow instead a leaderless approach, in which each replica is able to make progress using a quorum of its peers. These new leaderless protocols are complex and each one presents an ad-hoc approach to leaderlessness. The first contribution of this thesis is a framework that captures the essence of Leaderless State-Machine Replication (Leaderless SMR) and the formalization of some of its limits. Due to the increasingly sensitive nature of replicated services, leveraging simple benign failures is no longer enough. Recent research is headed towards developing protocols that support arbitrary behavior of some replicas (Byzantine failures) and that also thrive in a geo-replicated environment. An example of this new type of sensitive replicated services that has been the focus of a lot of research are blockchains. Blockchains are powered by Byzantine replication protocols adapted to work over hundreds or even thousands of replicas. When the membership control over such replicas is open, that is, anyone can run a replica, we say the blockchain is permissionless. In the converse case, when the membership is controlled by a set of known entities like companies, we say the blockchain is permissioned. When such Byzantine protocols follow the classic leader-driven approach they suffer from scalability and availability issues, similarly to their non-byzantine counterparts. In the second part of this thesis, we adapt our framework to support Byzantine failures and present the first framework for Byzantine Leaderless SMR. Furthermore, we show that when properly instantiated it allows to sidestep the scalability problems in leader-driven Byzantine SMR protocols for permissioned blockchains

Abstract:
Abstract In the twenty years before 1865 the cause of franchise reform, though it generated sporadic bouts of ill-coordinated activity, came at times to resemble nothing so much as a corpse on the dissecting table. Its supporters—bereft of influence, cohesion, and staying power—remained rich only in the ability to irritate and to bore. After the collapse of Chartism as a major political phenomenon in 1848 there was no general or effective reform movement. Under Sir Joshua Walmsley, and with occasional support from Cobden and Bright, the Parliamentary and Financial Reform Association organized a strikingly unsuccessful campaign between 1849 and 1852. The announcement in 1848 by Lord John Russell that he no longer thought the reforms of 1832 ‘final’ failed to arouse the nation. Only Westminster seemed at all keen. Some seventy Radical MPs doggedly supported motions brought forward by members like P. J. Locke King aimed at assimilating the county to the more generous borough franchise and introducing the secret ballot. Official bills issued forth from Russell’s Liberal administration in 1852, Aberdeen’s coalition in 1854, Derby’s Tory government in 1859, and Palmerston’s Liberal government in 1860. All sank beneath the waves. Indifference rather than opposition stood in the way. Almost no significant leader was completely opposed. Some, like Russell, were committed. Some, like Derby and Disraeli, hoped to revive party fortunes with superficially bold but practically anodyne proposals. Some, like Palmerston, were at least prepared to take up the question as a flag of truce towards more radical elements. But while a growing body of MPs wanted reform, they did not want it very much and could not agree as to the shape it should take. The nation, however, seemed apathetic. In 1856 Cobden thought one ‘might as well call out for the millennium’. Even the one substantial piece of reform legislation from these years—the Irish Franchise Act of 1850 (which greatly altered the nature of the electorate in Ireland) —was passed, not because of public pressure or official enthusiasm, but because the Great Famine had so reduced the number of voters that something simply ‘had to be done’.

Abstract:
Abstract The forming of scale or the migration and intrusion of formation fines and sand into the proppant pack often drastically diminishes the conductivity of frac-packs and propped fractures which can negatively impact well production. This paper describes the development of a new surface modification agent (SMA) that can be applied during frac-packing operations or the remedial treatments of propped fractures or near-wellbore (NWB) formations. Studies were conducted to demonstrate the mechanisms by which this SMA simultaneously inhibits scale formation in the proppant pack while also controlling migration and intrusion of formation sand and fines. Once coated on the proppant as part of hydraulic fracturing, frac-packing, or gravel pack treatment, or when injected into the proppant pack and formation matrix, this SMA forms a thin film on the particulates, covering the fines and anchoring the particulates in place. The SMA coating also forms a hydrophobic film that encapsulates particulate surfaces, inhibiting chemical reactions that lead to scale formation in pack matrix and subsequent productivity loses. Experiments using packed beds of proppant, formation sands, and various fines were performed to simulate proppant pack conditions and formation fines before and after remedial treatments. It was observed that SMA treatments formed only a very thin film, which encapsulated proppant or formation particulates and created cohesion between grains, without plugging pore spaces. Additionally, laboratory results demonstrate that SMA treatments can effectively prevent buildup of scale in various sand packs as well as successfully controlling migration of formation fines into proppant packs to maintain fluid flow paths. In addition to remedial treatments, SMA treatment fluid can be applied while treating formations following a sandstone acidizing treatment, during treatment of formations before a high-rate water pack or frac-pack treatment, or as part of a pad fluid to treat the fracture faces before placement of proppant into a fracture and/or a screen annulus.

Abstract:
Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMSs), which are formed by precipitates from hydrothermal fluids vented from seafloor, have been expected as one of mineral resources to be developed. The authors have proposed the concept of seafloor mineral processing for SMS mining, where valuable minerals contained in SMS ores are separated on seafloor. To apply a ball mill to the grinding unit for seafloor mineral processing, grinding experiments were carried out using a small-scale ball mill applicable to high-pressure condition. In the experiments, wet grinding and water-filled grinding of size-classified silica sands were carried out at three rotation rates to compare the grinding performance in both cases. In both cases, the silica sands were finely ground. The measurement of particle size of samples from the experiments showed that water-filled grinding had comparable grinding performance to wet grinding while the suitable rotation rate for water-filled grinding shifted to higher than that for wet grinding. This result suggests the possibility of water-filled grinding for seafloor mineral processing. If water-filled grinding can be employed for the grinding unit, the structure of the grinding unit would be simplified in comparison with wet grinding that leads to the saving of grinding costs.

Abstract:
We describe a simple and accurate satellite-based technique for measuring temperatures throughout the Earth's middle atmosphere, based upon limb profile observations of Rayleigh scattered sunlight. An example of the precision and accuracy of this technique are two analyses limb radiances from the Solar Mesospheric Explorer, which provided a global climatology of temperatures in the poorly sampled mesospheric region from 60-90 km altitude (Clancy and Rusch, 1989); and more recently for the upper stratosphere (Clancy and Rusch, 1991). The SME mesospheric temperatures were derived from ultraviolet (265, 295 nm) limb radiances, which lead to optimum signal-to-noise ratios for measurement of Rayleigh scattering within the low density mesosphere. In figure 1, we reproduce (from Clancy and Rusch, 1989) a limited comparison of SME mesospheric temperatures with SAMS and French lidar observations (Chanin et al., 1987) at an altitude of 65 km and a latitude of 45°N. We also reproduce, in figure 2, the four-year (1982-1986) SME temperature trends for the 60-90 km altitude region.

Abstract:
Abstract Large reserves of High-Viscous Oil in Kuwait calls for Improved Oil Recovery scenarios. In Kuwait unconsolidated sandstone formations, the sandstone intervals represent extensive reservoir intervals of sand separated by laterally extensive non-reservoir intervals that comprise finer-grained, argillaceous sands, silts and muds. The reservoir is shallow with high permeability (above 1000 mD) and under bottom aquifer pressure support. Due to strong viscosity contrast between oil and water, after breakthrough, the water cut rises quickly resulting in strong loss of production efficiency. Mitigating water production is thus mandatory to improve production conditions. The candidate wells have 2 to 3 open intervals in different rock facies with comingle production. The total perforated length is between 38 and 48 ft. Production is through PCP at a rate of around 300 bpd and BS&W is between 71 and 87%. The technology applied utilizes pre-gelled size-controlled product (SMG Microgels) having RPM properties, i.e. inducing a strong drop of relative permeability to water without affecting oil relative permeability. The size is chosen to selectively treat the high-permeability water producing zones while preserving the lower-permeability oil zones. The chemical can also withstand downhole harsh conditions such as salinity of around 170,000ppm and presence of 2% H2S. The treatment consisted of bullhead injection of 300 bbls of pre-gelled chemical through tubing. The first results seem very favourable, sincefor two wells, the water cut has dropped from 80 to 40% with almost same gross production rate. The incremental oil is more than 100 bopd. The third well did not show marked change after WSO treatment. The wells are under continuous monitoring to assess long-term performance. Such result, if confirmed, may lead to high possibilities for the improvement of heavy-oil reservoir production under aquifer support by mitigating water production with simple chemical bullhead injection.

Abstract:
Spectral gamma-ray (SGR) data were acquired from a new slim logging-while-drilling (LWD) tool and from surface cuttings in a near vertical well and in a horizontal well across clastic deposits. Comparison of the data from both measurements indicates that there are advantages from both methods. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data from cuttings also support the findings. The formation evaluation objective is to quantify the volumes of each mineral and fluid present in the formation. SGR data brings the required additional information to reduce the mineral volume uncertainty, especially for the clays in the formation with complex mineral assemblages. In the studied clastic deposits, several clay types are present (with the dominant contribution from illite and kaolinite) together with feldspars and trace elements like zircon and other heavy minerals. The presence of gas introduces another unknown, since it affects the porosity measurements and fluid volume calculation through bulk density and neutron porosity. The comparison of SGR data from LWD logs and from cuttings brings robustness to our conclusions. Comparison of the thorium, potassium, and uranium concentrations from LWD logs and from cuttings shows good agreement in the measurements for the low-angle well. The high-angle well data also shows good agreement between the two measurements except for the cleaner sand section. The results from the cuttings are affected by the accuracy of sample depth control due to the poor borehole conditions and inefficiency in evacuating cuttings in high-angle wells compared to low-angle wells. The trend of the SGR is maintained. The LWD SGR elemental concentrations are then used to solve the formation mineral fractions, which are compared with the same fractions from the XRD on cuttings. Similar conclusions are drawn for the elemental concentrations. The potassium concentration enables the quantification of illite and potassium feldspar. Uranium brings a significant contribution to the total GR measurement, which could lead to a clay volume overestimation if the uranium contributions weren’t excluded. In conclusion, LWD provides superior quality SGR data compared with SGR from cuttings because of the better depth control and vertical resolution. SGR on cuttings can be an alternative when combined with other LWD measurements and accepting a higher uncertainty, in case LWD SGR cannot be run due to certain borehole conditions. This paper compares the results of a slim tool LWD and cuttings SGR data for the first time and concludes on the applicability of each technique.

For this purpose, the groups of the Production Planning subject of the Industrial Engineering program of Unidades Tecnológicas de Santander were taken, to which the project-based learning strategy was applied, with the purpose that the students appropriate knowledge imparted in the classroom from practice, which allows them to ask their own questions and build solutions, motivating them to review and reflect on them, facilitating the development of skills that they would not otherwise acquire in the environment conventional teaching. The training theme was the inventory management system, which is a set of policies and guidelines that allow maintaining and controlling the items of which a company has stock. The development took place from August 2020 to December 2021, a period through which three semester academic periods are covered. As a result, a methodology is proposed for the circulation of knowledge and the generation of innovations in business management that can be applied in various training contexts in higher education institutions. The greatest challenge for the achievement of this work was the context marked by the pandemic caused by the Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that causes the disease called COVID-19, which made the execution of group dynamics complex.
