Abstract:
The early R&B vocal group the Orioles are often credited with launching the musical style later known as doo-wop, especially with their 1949 hit “It’s Too Soon to Know” and their last charting number, “Crying in the Chapel” (1953). Their smooth romantic ballads became some of the first crossover hits of the postwar era, and were an alternative to more aggressive masculinities emerging out of the jump blues. This chapter illustrates this choreography of gender through live stage shows, recordings, interviews, and period reviews in the African American press. The short-lived periodical Tan Confessions adds particular nuance, featuring interviews with stars like Sonny Til alongside housewares advertisements targeted at African American women. This masculinity should be understood as a strategy linked with Cold War discourses of consensus and consumption, and the anxieties over masculinity expressed in Franklin Frasier’s Black Bourgeoisie in the historical moment of postwar desegregation.

Full text
Abstract:
Atherosclerosis is the main underlying cause of heart disease. The continuous exposure to cardiovascular risk factors induces endothelial activation/dysfunction which enhances the permeability of the endothelial layer and the expression of cytokines/chemokines and adhesion molecules. This results in the accumulation of lipids (low-density lipoprotein particles) in the extracellular matrix and the triggering of an inflammatory response. Accumulated low-density lipoprotein particles suffer modifications and become pro-atherogenic, enhancing leucocyte recruitment and further transmigration across the endothelium into the intima. Infiltrated monocytes differentiate into macrophages which acquire a specialized phenotypic polarization (protective or harmful), depending on the stage of the atherosclerosis progression. Once differentiated, macrophages upregulate pattern recognition receptors capable of engulfing modified low-density lipoprotein, leading to foam cell formation. Foam cells release growth factors and cytokines that promote vascular smooth muscle cell migration into the intima, which then internalize low-density lipoprotein via low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 receptors. As the plaque evolves, the number of vascular smooth muscle cells decline, whereas the presence of fragile/haemorrhagic neovessels increases, promoting plaque destabilization. Disruption of this atherosclerotic lesion exposes thrombogenic surfaces that initiate platelet adhesion, activation, and aggregation, as well as thrombin generation. Both lipid-laden vascular smooth muscle cells and macrophages release the procoagulant tissue factor, contributing to thrombus propagation. Platelets also participate in progenitor cell recruitment and drive the inflammatory response mediating the atherosclerosis progression. Recent data attribute to microparticles a potential modulatory effect in the overall atherothrombotic process. This chapter reviews our current understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in atherogenesis, highlights platelet contribution to thrombosis and atherosclerosis progression, and provides new insights into how atherothrombosis may be modulated.

Abstract:
The progressive loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons with advancing disease exposes the trough between every dose of levodopa in Parkinson’s disease. This is due to the combination of a loss of native dopamine production to fill in this interdose interval and a reduction in dopaminergic terminals to take up and release dopamine long beyond its short plasma half-life. The clinical result is wearing off—an awareness in patients of returning symptomatology while waiting for their next dose. Where consistent and impacting negatively on function on any level, there are a number of initial oral approaches to smooth out dopaminergic stimulation before more invasive advanced therapeutic options need to be considered.

Ferraty, Frédéric, and Philippe Vieu. A Unifying Classification for Functional Regression Modeling. Edited by Frédéric Ferraty and Yves Romain. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199568444.013.1.

Full text
Abstract:
This article presents a unifying classification for functional regression modeling, and more specifically for modeling the link between two variables X and Y, when the explanatory variable (X) is of a functional nature. It first provides a background on the proposed classification of regression models, focusing on the regression problem and defining parametric, semiparametric, and nonparametric models, and explains how semiparametric modeling can be interpreted in terms of dimension reduction. It then gives four examples of functional regression models, namely: functional linear regression model, additive functional regression model, smooth nonparametric functional model, and single functional index model. It also considers a number of new models, directly adapted to functional variables from the existing standard multivariate literature.

Abstract:
This chapter prepares for the proof by introducing a method concerning the general rate of convergence of mollifiers. The lemma takes into account the multi-index, the moment vanishing conditions, and smooth functions. An explanation for reducing the number of minus signs appearing in the proof is offered. The case N = 2 of the above lemma suffices for the proof of the main theorem. The chapter considers another way to work out the details relating to the lemma, which will be repeatedly used in the remainder of the proof. In particular, it describes functions whose integrals are not normalized to 1, but which satisfy the same type of estimates as ∈subscript Element.

Bosse, Joanna. Interlude. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039010.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
In this interlude, the author reflects on her experience of dancing the last waltz of the evening with Leo, a retired physician who also happens to be her neighbor. She describes Leo as one of her favorite partners in ballroom dance. He has a somewhat unique, syncretic salsa dance style. As he and the author were dancing the last waltz of the night, David played a vocal number. She sang along, and Leo didn't seem to mind. The author claims that while dancing with Leo, she experienced a pleasurable moment of just disappearing, as is often the case when she smooth dances with him. She was awakened by the closing refrains of the song. As she moved toward him and they were poised together, they turned as one entity. They continued to turn together as the final cadence of the song sounded.

Full text
Abstract:
The life-cycle model yields a number of important empirical predictions about consumption and saving behavior. First, the growth rate of consumption depends on the difference between the expected real interest rate and the rate of time preference and varies with the elasticity of intertemporal substitution. Second, individuals seek to smooth the marginal utility of consumption over time. Third, young consumers should be accumulating resources for retirement, and hence have an adequate level of wealth at retirement. Finally, the elderly should be decumulating resources. To test these predictions, one can draw on a vast array of data on interest rates, consumption, income, and wealth. Some come from time series and national accounts, others from cross-sectional or longitudinal surveys of households. This chapter introduces stylized facts that emerge from a first examination of such data, pointing out the merits but also the drawbacks of the available sources.

Blakeslee, Barbara, and Mark E. McCourt. The White Effect. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0039.

Full text
Abstract:
The White effect is an illusion in which gray test patches of identical luminance placed on the black and white bars of a square-wave grating appear different in brightness/lightness. The effect has received much attention because the direction of the brightness change does not correlate with the amount of black or white border in contact with the gray test patch or its general vicinity. The test patch on the black bar appears lighter than the test patch on the white bar despite changes in test patch height or inducing grating spatial frequency. In addition, although the test patch shows a smooth change in brightness/lightness as its spatial position is varied relative to the inducing grating, spatial inhomogeneities in brightness/lightness within the test patch are also visible. A large number of “higher-level” explanations have been offered for the White effect; only the oriented-difference-of-Gaussians model can account for all of these properties.
