Abstract:
The object of this thesis is to present a reinterpretation of Adam Smith's philosophy. It works to show the pessimistic character of his thought that is so often overlooked by conventional analyses. The skepticism Smith holds for man can be seen in his theories on the accumulation of knowledge, morality, economics, and human progress. By emphasizing Smith's theory of man's subjugation to the natural order, an alternative interpretation is given of liberal economics. The role of God in Smith's philosophy will be shown to serve two purposes. God serves as Smith's final line of explanation, and it also provides humanity beneficial results through unintended outcomes.

Stroud, Brenda. "Charlotte Smith : political novelist." Thesis, Open University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.552783.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comprehensive, chronological and synoptic study of political thought in the eleven novels of Charlotte Smith (1749-1806), published between 1788 and 1802. It traces the ways in which Smith incorporates topics which were the subject of political debate in the period immediately following the outbreak of the French Revolution into the framework of the courtship novel, and demonstrates her engagement with what was being said and written by polemicists in response to events in both France and England. By examining each of Smith's novels in relation to a wide range of contemporary political writing, I show that she participated more continuously and closely in the political discourse of the 1790s than has been realised or documented. I also argue that her involvement with political discourse was an important factor in her development as an innovative and experimental novelist. As she questioned and challenged accepted political certainties, and was influenced by politically radical ideas, so her novels became increasingly experimental in form. Even in her pre-Revolutionary novels, Smith expressed dissatisfaction with the socio-political values endorsed by the conventions of courtship novels which commonly resolved with the heroine placed within a patriarchal family, married to a man of rank and living in an inherited landed property. The political battles of the 1790s were fought using topoi of patriarchal authority and patrilineal inheritance, which were seen by conservatives as vital to the preservation of the security and prosperity of the country. At a symbolic level these topoi mirrored the relationship between monarch and subject and the longevity and stability of constitution and state. Smith's political alignment with radical reformers meant that the safe resolutions of her earlier novels were modified or jettisoned as her courtship narratives were inflected by this discourse and became the forums for political debate.

Abstract:
Health and fitness sector is becoming increasingly popular, and technology is being integrated into the fitness industry. This project proposed to digitalise the smith machine by creating a system to generate force through an electric motor to replace free weights. Because the exercise machine no longer needs to be loaded and unloaded with free weights, digitalisation of the smith machine will allow several users to utilise the same training machine. It will also be possible to track users' training information, such as weight lifted and the number of sets and reps performed during a workout. In this thesis, an Electrical speed controller (ESC) called VESC was used to control the BLDC motor. Experiments were conducted to find a method to control the torque. The result was producing a constant torque with a margin of error of 1-1.5 kilograms. Furthermore, two algorithms were developed where the resistance varies during the path of motion, which indicates that it is possible to develop the system to individualise resistance to improve training performance and rehabilitation. The conclusion that could be drawn is that this system can be used to replace free weights with an electric motor.

Masud, Noreen. "Aphorism in Stevie Smith." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2017. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:4e8101f5-1484-435d-86c4-df7bb65c926e.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis draws up a new theory of the aphorism, a form which has received limited critical treatment in literary and philosophical studies. It uses this model of aphorism to frame an original approach to the enigmatic poetry and novels of Stevie Smith (1902-1971). Surveying the aphoristic tradition through German, French and English lines of development, analysing a range of short-form writing including La Rochefoucauld's maxims, Erasmus's proverbs and Karl Kraus's aphorisms, I suggest that aphorism represents a tool for the social management of emotion. Rhetorically corralled into a slick, collectable shape, the aphorism promises arresting and instantaneous epiphany. However, the accomplished elegance which positioned the aphorism's message as self-evidently true in fact works to repel further enquiry, and ultimately ensures that it will be forgotten or bypassed in favour of another aphorism. Aphorism, therefore, is a form in which dangerous ideas and emotions can be safely displayed and, simultaneously, effaced. Because aphorism's style defuses the imperative to act on what is clearly known, writers like Stevie Smith can use the form as a means of withdrawing from the burden of making an impact on the world. I therefore find that Smith's use of aphorism and its related forms (proverb, epitaph, caption and fragment) offers a route into her texts. With her disconcerting pen-andink drawings, dark comedy, and social ventriloquism which stops short of satire, the rhetorical force of Smith's poetry fascinates and arrests its readers, but nevertheless leaves them unable to react coherently, identify the use-value which her writing appears to promise, or delve successfully beneath its compelling surface. Drawing on hitherto unpublished archival material, I argue that Smith's texts resist analysis because like the aphorisms embedded throughout them, they offer and exemplify a mode of clearly-declared revelation which, at the same time, makes itself unusable.

Seibert, Ginny. "THE LEGACY OF ANDRE SMITH." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3798.

Full text
Abstract:
Jules Andre Smith was an architect and an artist with an aspiration to build a retreat where artists could explore and develop new ideas. In the late 1930s, due to the generosity of a benefactor named Mary Louise Curtis Bok, Smith embarked upon an undertaking that fulfilled his ambition. He created a legacy known first as The Research Studio and later as the Maitland Art Center. The intent of this thesis is to document and journey through Smith's legacy, and answer the following two questions: What is the symbolic meaning behind the imagery? Why design six acres of architecture dominated by Mesoamerican and Christian-influenced iconography? The data collection process consisted of interviews; reviews of the City of Maitland council meeting minutes; readings of court documents, newspaper articles, and books in Smith's personal library along with a literature review related to the iconography surrounding the walls and floors of Smith's compound. Interviews with those who knew Smith consisted of open-ended questions related to Smith's character, his association with the artists, his work habits, his reasoning for choosing the unlikely mix of Christian and Mesoamerican-influenced art, and the artist-in-residence experience. A recap of the meetings was mailed to each of the parties consulted for verification of the content. The judicial system played a crucial role in mapping Smith's legacy following his death when an unfortunate set of circumstances found his work the object of three legal proceedings in Orange County, Florida. To unravel all the charges and the final judgments, hundreds of microfiche records were reviewed and eighty pages printed for re-review before completing the section of this document pertaining to the legalities surrounding the facility's future. Over 100 newspaper articles were catalogued and coded based on their relevant time periods. Collectively, they contained information related to Smith's early years in the Maitland-Winter Park area, events leading up to the building of his artists' retreat, and the fate of the vision following Smith's death. Before I began a literature review to decipher the meaning behind the sculptures and reliefs, I photographed and categorized many of the images by subject. This process included reviews of over sixty books and articles. Additionally, an expert in the field of Mesoamerican culture, Dr. Arlen Chase, was consulted regarding some elements of the iconography. Preceding my conclusions, the reader is given a tour of the grounds followed by a comparison of the imagery to the appropriate cultural representations.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an intellectual biography of Sir George Adam Smith, biblical scholar and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen. Smith trained for the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland under A.B. Davidson, who was influential in disseminating Higher Critical views of the Bible in Scotland. Smith inherited his teacher's penchant for Hebrew and Old Testament criticisms, and served as Hebrew tutor in Aberdeen's Free Church College following the deposition of William Robertson Smith, before becoming the first minister of Queen's Cross Free Church, Aberdeen (1882-92). During his ministry in Aberdeen Smith established a reputation as a preacher of note, and a leading biblical scholar. His preaching drew a large congregation around him, and his Old Testament commentaries secured him a place of note among students of the Old Testament prophets. The tensions between the developing biblical scholarship of the period and the confessional commitment of the Victorian Free Church of Scotland are evident in his years of ministry; and this thesis examines the relationship between the Church's theological position and the scholarship of the rising intellectuals. In 1892 Smith was appointed to the Chair of Hebrew and Old Testament Exegesis at the Free Church College, Glasgow, where he served until 1910. Smith's scholarly work focused on further critical studies of the prophets and the Historical Geography of Palestine. The tensions between academic study of the biblical text and the Church's confessional position came to a head with a near trial for heresy in 1902, the significance of which is examined here. Smith also embraced a social Gospel, and the relationship between his critical study of the Old Testament and his social work in the cities is worthy of study. Some historians view the emergence of a social gospel as evidence of a disappearing orthodox; but for Smith the social work of the church was integral to the ongoing ministry of the Church. Smith served as Principal of Aberdeen University from 1910 to 1935. His position as Vice Chancellor was akin to pastoring a large congregation without credal commitment. The growth of the University during his Principalship is interesting in its own right; not less so are his work as Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland (1916) and his work in church and state during the First World War.

Roberts, Bethan. "Charlotte Smith and the sonnet." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2014. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2003520/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the place of Charlotte Smith’s Elegiac Sonnets in the eighteenth-century sonnet revival. Smith is often credited with reviving the sonnet form, and has attracted attention as a ‘Romantic’ poet. This thesis seeks to rebalance the existing critical focus by locating Smith’s sonnets in their eighteenth-century context and by considering her engagement with tradition alongside her innovation and influence. It offers a new history and evaluation of the eighteenth-century sonnet, and locates Smith’s sonnets within it. It traces the expansion of Elegiac Sonnets through its multiple editions from 1784 to 1800, charting Smith’s changing approach to – and the interactions between – form, literary tradition and place. Thus, the thesis clarifies Smith’s real significance as a writer and her place in literary history.

This thesis examines the structure underlying Adam Smith’s work. It attempts to show that its coherence may be discerned as we let ourselves be guided by the idea that some of the author’s methodological principles are drawn from Newton. We wonder about the author’s explicit evocation of gravitation which is assumed to explain the way societies work. For social norms indeed, appear to be revolving round natural laws, just as market prices are, round natural prices or round the value of commodities. There also lies the implicit evocation of a force of attraction governing the destiny of human societies that would in time, tend towards an ideal City. Such a process would then be at the root of the need for the implementation and establishment of a specific institution of justice: the state. And Adam Smith would eventually emphasize the liberalism of liberty and justice

Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that Adam Smith is committed to moral egalitarianism, which extends to his theory of political economy. While Smith’s work is often used to justify economic inequality in society, I show that his political theory is best understood as a kind of relational egalitarianism. Using Elizabeth Anderson’s Democratic Equality as a model, I examine Smith’s commitment to equality in the space of social relationships. In particular, I argue that Smith’s focus on eliminating inequalities that cause oppression in society in conjunction with his efforts to design a political and economic system that will yield social conditions of freedom for individuals make him a relational egalitarian.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
A metalsmiths ability to turn stone into metal and mould metal into useable objects, is one of the most valuable production industries of any society. The conception of this metallurgical knowledge has been the major catalyst in the development of increasing socio-political complexity since the beginning of the Bronze Age (Childe, 1930). However, when considering the prehistory of Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, it is noted that the introduction of metallurgical activity, namely copper and bronze technology, did not engender the increase in social complexity witnessed in other regions. It is suggested that the region is anomalous in that terms and concepts developed to describe and define Bronze Ages by scholars working in other regions, lack strict analogues within Southeast Asia. Muhly (1988) has famously noted the non-compliance of Southeast Asia to previous models, "In all other corners of the Bronze Age world-China, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Aegean and central Europe-we find the introduction of bronze technology associated with a complex of social, political and economic developments that mark the rise of the state. Only in Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand and Vietnam, do these developments seem to be missing" (Muhly, 1988:16). This "rise of the state" is associated with the development of hierarchy, inequality, and status differentiation, evidence for which, it is argued, is most explicitly articulated in mortuary contexts (Bacus, 2006). Evidence would include an intra-site restriction in access to resources, including prestige goods, and ranking, a vertical differentiation, often related to interment wealth. Thus the introduction of metallurgical technology saw copper and other prestige goods, used to entrench authority and advertise status (Coles and Harding; 1979). Such evidence has so far been absent in Bronze Age, Southeast Asian contexts. Accordingly, the usefulness of the term "Bronze Age" for describing and defining Southeast Asian assemblages has been questioned (White, 2002). However, the Ban Non Wat discovery of wealthy Bronze Age interments, with bronze grave goods restricted to the wealthiest, has furrowed the brow of many working in the region, providing evidence to at least reconsider this stance. Despite its obvious importance in shaping Bronze Age societies around the globe, and now, significance in Northeast Thailand, very little is known of the acceptance, development, and spread of tin-bronze metallurgical techniques during the prehistory of Southeast Asia. Only a handful of investigations of archaeological sites in the region have investigated the use of metals beyond macroscopic cataloguing. Utilising an agential framework, the Ban Non Wat bronze metallurgical evidence has been investigated as an entire assemblage, from the perspective of the individual metalsmith, in order to greater understand the industry and its impact upon the society incorporating the new technology. Furthermore, mortuary data is investigated by means of wealth assessment, as an insight into social form throughout the corresponding period of adoption, development and spread of metallurgy. The bivalent study of society and technology has shed light on the development of socio-political, and economic complexity during Bronze Age Southeast Asia, and in doing so, outlined the direct impact the metalsmiths themselves had on the supply, spread and functioning of their important industry. Variabilities in grave wealth, have been identified at Ban Non Wat. A further situation not previously encountered in Bronze Age Southeast Asia, is the restriction of bronze goods, in death, to differentiated, wealthy individuals. The existence of such individuals suggests that society during this period was rather more complex than regional precedents would suggest. I contend that it is the introduction of metallurgy, and in particular, the nature in which it was conducted that engendered these developments. Therefore, when considering the traditional course of developing social-political complexity during the Bronze Age, it now seems that Thailand at least, is potentially, not that anomalous.

Abstract:
In The Sources of Normativity, Christine Korsgaard argues that in order to avoid the threat of moral skepticism, our moral theories must show how the claims they make about the nature of our actions obligate us to act morally. A theory that can justify the normativity of morality in this way answers what Korsgaard calls “the normative question.” Although Korsgaard claims that only Kantian theories of morality, such as her own, can answer the normative question, I argue that Adam Smith’s sentimentalist moral theory, as presented in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, can answer the normative question as well. As a result, it is possible to respond to the moral skeptic in the way Korsgaard outlines without accepting some of the theoretical drawbacks of Korsgaard’s own moral theory.

Full text
Abstract:
In A Treatise of Human Nature, David Hume argues that moral judgments are the product of sentiment. The mechanism of sympathy allows individuals to enter into a common point of view in order to produce judgments that are truly moral, and not merely self-interested. Hume argues that the common point of view is the standard that moral judgments are subjected to. I argue that the common point of view is an inadequate standard for distinguishing between proper and improper moral judgments. The common point of view is inadequate because it is subjective and unreflective. In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith offers an account of moral judgment that has an adequate standard for distinguishing between proper and improper moral judgments. Smith avoids the problems with Hume’s account due to his distinction between partial and impartial spectators and the role that self-command plays in his theory of moral judgment.

Korbly, Stephen E. "Smith Purcell radiation from femtosecond electron bunches." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/32419.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 125-131).
We present theoretical and experimental results from a Smith-Purcell radiation experiment using the electron beam from a 17 GHz high gradient accelerator. Smith- Purcell radiation occurs when a charged particle travels above a periodic grating structure. The electron beam consists of a train of 15 MeV, 9 pC bunches of bunch lengths varying from 600 fs to 1 ps. The radiated energy for one electron travelling above a periodic grating is solved. The effects of multiple electrons in a bunch and multiple bunches in a train are introduced. The Smith-Purcell resonance condition and the dependence of the radiated energy upon beam current and beam height above the grating are presented. Measurement of the angular distribution of the Smith- Purcell radiation resulted in bunch length measurements of 0.60 ± 0.1 ps and 1 ± 0.1 ps under different accelerator operating conditions. This demonstrates the use of Smith-Purcell radiation as a non-destructive bunch length diagnostic with 100 fs resolution. Smith-Purcell radiation is comparable to other sources of radiation, such as transistion radiation, synchrotron radiation, etc. except that it has an inherent enhancement by a factor of Ng, the number of grating periods. Additional enhancement occurs when the electron bunch length is short compared with the radiation wavelength, resulting in coherent emission with an enhancement by a factor of Ne the number of electrons in the bunch. Finally, the electron beam consists of a regular train of Nb bunches, resulting in an energy density spectrum that is restricted in frequency space to harmonics of the bunch train frequency, with an increase in the energy density at these frequencies by a factor of Nb.
(cont.) We report the first observation of Smith-Purcell radiation displaying all three of these enhancements, that is, with a total enhancement of Ng.Ne.Nb. This total enhancement provides a simple method of generating powerful THz radiation at specific frequencies, which can be detected with a high signal to noise ratio by a heterodyne receiver.

The stingless bees, stingless bees, social, found in tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. In Brazil they are all over the country, especially the North and Northeast Melipona fasciculata Smith (Apidae, Meliponini), popularly known as tiúba, cultivated by indigenous and rural populations for the production of honey, geopropolis and accumulate pollen. This is produced from the natural flower pollen, mixed with nectar and salivary secretions of the bee and popularly used as a nutritional feed and antifungal to treat diseases, colitis, allergic reactions. The study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial and pollen of hydroalcoholic extracts of pollen collected by Melipona fasciculata Smith bee. The pollen samples (09) were collected in meliponários in the states of Pará and Maranhão, Brazil, which were separately macerated with 70% ethyl alcohol for 48 hours obtaining extractive solutions, which were filtered and concentrated in a rotary evaporator, obtaining If the pollen hydroalcoholic extracts (EHP). The extracts were evaluated in vitro antioxidant activity by methods DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidrazila) and FRAP (reduced iron), quantification of the total flavonoid content (aluminum chloride) and total polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu reagent) measured by UV-Vis and evaluation of the in vitro antimicrobial activity by agar diffusion method. Pollens were extracted and subjected to acetolysis for palynological studies. The chemical components of the extract were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC / MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC / MS / MS). The EHP showed EC50 values between 70.73 -398.74 mg / ml and 0.09 ± 0.06% - 1.26 ± 0.13 mmol Fe 2+ / g extract, total polyphenolic content varied between 5, 4 ± 0.01 -14.66 ± 0.04 and 0.59 ± 0.003 -1.10 ± 0.01 for the total flavonoid content. The chemical constituents of pollen extracts identified by GC / MS showed the predominant fatty acids, amino acids, phenolic acids and sugars such as classes of chemical compounds present in the extracts analyzed. The analysis of extracts by LC / MS / MS, it was possible to identify the flavonoids kaempferol, isohamenetina, afzelin, quercetrin, cirsiliol, derivatives cirsiliol, tilirosídeo, gluconic acid, glucitol, quercetrin, isohamenetina-3-O-rutinoside, hydroxyssaffor yellow, besides gluconic acid and glucitol. The EHP 09 (pollen collected in the state of Pará) was the most active against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Streptococcus mutans. The content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity vary according to the types of pollen grains observed in pollen evaluation. The data contribute to chemical and biological parameters of identity fixing and quality of accumulated pollen by Melipona fasciculata grown in municipos Palmeirândia, Fernando Falcao in the state of Maranhão and Pará as subsidies for future legislation stingless bee products, and also contribute to aggregate values to meliponícolas products.
Abstract:
In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith establishes a pluralist scheme to explain moral approbation, with four kinds of moral judgments: 1) regarding the motives of the agent, the judgment determines its propriety or impropriety; 2) regarding the immediate effects of the action, the judgement determines its merit or demerit; 3) analyzing if this act is a particular case of a general rule, the judgement determines if the agent has acted according to his duty; and 4) regarding the remote effects of the action, that is, the way this action is a part of the global operations of society (a judgement that Smith calls the appearance of utility). These four kinds of moral judgments are grounded in imagination and form the totality of the principle of approbation that structure the speculative part of his moral philosophy

Abstract:
Let G be a connected reductive group with simply connected derived subgroup. By applying work of Riche–Williamson in the fledgling area of Smith–Treumann theory, this thesis presents a proof of a conjecture due to the former authors: there is a monoidal action of the diagrammatic Hecke category on the principal block of G. The thesis also contains background sections motivating the importance of the conjecture for modular representation theory and explaining the machinery needed for the proof (for instance, the equivariant derived category of constructible étale sheaves on a scheme). Suggestions for future research are outlined at the end.

The late John Edwin Smith was an influential teacher of philosophy, especially philosophy of religion, at Yale University. His own writings are understudied, however, and this dissertation provides a full-scale analysis, situating John E. Smith in what he took to be the central problem in philosophy of religion, namely an inadequate theory of experience. Smith developed his own theory of experience, including religious experience, through a radical rereading of the American pragmatists (Charles Peirce, William James, John Dewey, and Josiah Royce), attending to their interests in religion. Chapter 1 provides a biographical history of Smith's life. Then it traces his efforts to expand the parameters of the American Philosophical Association, to recognize non-analytic schools and their interests, such as pragmatism. Chapter 2 examines Smith's critical reading of classical American pragmatism in contrast to more popular readings by Richard Rorty and the Columbia school. Chapter 3 examines Smith's theory of experience as radically interpreted experience. Chapter 4 describes Smith's alternative philosophy of religion developed from his particular reading of pragmatism. Chapter 5 attempts to apply Smith's philosophy of religion to the field of theology. It asserts that Smith's philosophy provides a means to reinterpret classical Christian doctrine, such as the doctrine of God, Christology, ecclesiology, and the nature and role of doctrine, in a way that it is both intelligible to a contemporary audience, and faithful to the tradition's inherited theological claims. Chapter 6 compares the nature of a religious community with other communities according to Smith's theory. It also describes how the 'religious community' should attempt to balance the authority of traditional doctrine with non-religious sources of knowledge.

Bennett, Russ Kay. "Joseph Smith—History: From Dictation to Canon." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3245.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to answer the question of how Joseph Smith—History found in The Pearl of Great Price developed into a part of the canon of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the prophet Joseph Smith first dictated the text to his scribes it seems he had not intended for the work to become scripture, but simply to follow the Lord's divine mandate to keep a record. Additionally he provided the purpose in his document to "disabuse the public mind, and put all inquirers after truth in possession of the facts, as they transpired." The format he proposed for the Manuscript History illustrates how it was originally not purposed for scripture. The compiling of that history took the efforts of many men and women and spanned the length of almost twenty years to complete. Joseph Smith had begun the dictation to his scribe George Robinson in 1838, but it was unfinished. Joseph later began the dictation anew to his scribe James Mulholland, first having the man rewrite what he had told to Robinson and then picking up the dictation from there. While the prophet had started and stopped histories before, this particular dictation began the enduring effort. The Manuscript History was developed from the original 59 pages that were scribed by Mulholland. By the efforts of other scribes, but mostly Willard Richards, the history was completed. The official statement of Brigham Young and Orson Pratt upon its completion said nothing of extracting portions for canon. But Mulholland's work seemed destined for a different purpose than the rest of the Manuscript History. It was printed serially in the Times and Seasons, and a few apostles seemed to catch a vision of what the manuscript could do for potential converts and members of the Church. Orson Pratt was especially a proponent of communicating certain key events as illustrated in his missionary tract "Remarkable Visions." A later apostle, Franklin D. Richards, would see the benefit of using the official history to distribute the history of the restoration of the Church to others. He extracted portions from Mulholland's text that covered certain main events in Joseph's life and printed them in his missionary tract The Pearl of Great Price. This pamphlet would eventually be canonized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1880. Joseph Smith-History's inclusion in the reclamation of revelation that occurred in 1880 was deserved. This is evidenced by examining the process of canonization and the guiding principles of canonization employed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was canonized at the same time as many other revelations and at a General Conference saturated with many important events. Consequently it is difficult to gauge the reaction to its inclusion in canon, except in how it has been used since its canonization. After its inclusion into scripture the text has become a foundational piece of literature for the Church. The impact the text has had can be seen in the culture, missionary work, and doctrine of the Church. The focus of this thesis is to map the text's journey from birth to canonization.

Hodder, Christopher. "A structured approach to the 'Adam Smith Problem'." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15712/.

Full text
Abstract:
The often discussed but never defined “Adam Smith Problem” is in fact several issues surrounding our understanding of the philosophical framework which underlies the two published works of Adam Smith: The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. In this thesis, I examine the secondary literature and argue that this is not in fact one problem, but a set of three inter-related issues which require clarification: (1) What principles of human nature are the works committed to and do they contradict one another? (2) What role does the invisible hand play, and according to Smith, to what extent can we rely on it to produce the greater good? (3) Can the economic man of Wealth of Nations be a virtuous man, and if so, how? Having defined this more precise Adam Smith Problem, I examine Smith’s work to understand how he would answer these three questions. To explain (1), I explain how both works are committed to the understanding of human beings as cogs in a machine, unintentionally producing an order which is designed by God. With regards to (2) I argue that the invisible hand is a metaphor for these unintended but providentially designed outcomes, and contrary to some economists, does not express equilibrium in the market or sanction morality-free economics. In order to answer (3), I adapt Russell Nieli’s “spheres of intimacy” account of Smith to show that the same mechanisms are said to underlie human behaviour in both our intimate and economic lives of individuals, and thus the economic man is in fact also the virtuous man.

Kim, Kwangsu. "Adam Smith : a relationship between metaphysics and science." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1994. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4236/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is basically in line with a common standpoint according to which Adam Smith's methodology deserves to be given the main priority in order to understand best his system of moral philosophy or `social science' in a modern sense. In this connection Smith's `metaphysics' is treated as an extremely important element to which our attention has to be drawn when we are concerned with his system of social science. This point of view differs primarily from an interpretative framework which seems to be still influential; a perspective from which a linkage between metaphysics and science is ignored. Instead, this work is based on the argument that metaphysics which may be defined as confirmable yet irrefutable (thus extra-scientific) doctrines is at work in the background of scientific activities in such as way that the former proposes an outline of scientific research in terms of providing a general outlook whereby a coherent type of data may be sorted out, arranged and organized. The `predominant' aim of this work on the basis of the view just mentioned is to seek a linkage between Smith's study of natural theology, which is responsible for providing an influential metaphysical doctrine, and other disciplines such as ethics and economics in his scheme of moral philosophy. I begin by identifying Smith's three metaphysical doctrines, the doctrine of mechanistic determinism, organismic philosophy, and the belief in a benevolent God (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 is designed to identify Smith's metatheoretical principles which, in conjunction with his metaphysics which is rooted in his theological outlook, serve to regulate or shape his `theoretical' analysis of man and society.

Powell, Adam Jared. "Irenaeus, Joseph Smith, and the sociology of heresy." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/9411/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to illustrate the salience of the concept ‘heresy’ for sociologically-informed studies of religious violence and opposition by removing it from its traditional moorings in historical theology and applying it to two religious movements: second-century Christians and nineteenth-century Mormons. Divided into two major sections, the study pursues its objective first by surveying available definitions of heresy (theological and sociological) and offering its own understanding of heresy as a Weberian ideal type of religious opposition. Part One of the study concludes with a look at the sociology of knowledge in general and the theory of identity adumbrated by Hans Mol in particular, appropriating each in order to outline the social process whereby religious groups facing opposition come to elaborate complex soteriologies capable of resolving the conflict. The second half of the thesis involves a close examination of early Christians and early Mormons, providing a detailed description of the types of social opposition each group faced and juxtaposing the two communities in an effort to illuminate unique historical patterns of social marginalisation. Following this investigation of each group’s religious milieu and corresponding persecution, the study engages the soteriologies articulated by Irenaeus and Joseph Smith, paying particular attention to the connections between specific forms of opposition and the way in which espousing deification helped resolve such ‘heresy’. The thesis concludes with thoughts on the relationship between adaptable belief systems (such as the forms of deification expressed by Irenaeus and Joseph Smith) and the future success of new religious movements.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the constructions of the market in the thought of Adam Smith and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and their relevance for contemporary political philosophy. Combining the history of ideas with systematic analysis, it contrasts Smith’s view of the market as a benevolently designed ‘contrivance of nature’ with Hegel’s view of the market as a ‘relic of the state of nature.’ In two interpretative chapters these two constructions of the market are discussed within the contexts of Smith’s and Hegel’s thought. In three systematic chapters, the relevance of these different constructions for the problems of identity and community, social justice, and different notions and dimensions of freedom is discussed. The first of these chapters argues that the conceptualization of the labour market as a market place for human capital or as a locus for the development of a professional ethos has a deep impact on how one thinks about the relation between individual and community, cutting across the debate between liberals and communitarians. The second systematic chapter shows that the market can be seen either as an instrument for addressing issues of social justice or as an institution against which social justice needs to be realized: for Smith, who thinks that free markets reward virtue and equalize income, it is the former, whereas for Hegel, who holds that free markets lead to unpredictable results and exacerbate social differences, it is the latter. The third systematic chapter addresses the relation between different aspects of liberty and the market. It shows that the market offers both chances and risks for liberty in the sense of individual autonomy, and analyses the relations of the market to positive liberty in a political sense. The concluding chapter draws some broader methodological lessons, arguing for a closer integration of economic and political theory at a ‘less-ideal’ level.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the formative influences, development and impact of the theology of David Smith Cairns, Scottish minister, academic and writer, during the high point of British imperial expansion, and at a time of social tension caused by industrialisation. In particular, it describes and evaluates his role in the Church’s efforts to face major challenges relating to its relationships to the different world religions, its response to the First World War, and its attitude to the scientific disciplines that called into question some of its long-standing perceptions and suppositions. Examination of Cairns’s life and work reveals an eminent figure, born into the United Presbyterian Church and rooted in the Church in Scotland, but operating ecumenically and internationally. His apologetics challenged the prevailing assumptions of the day: that science provided the only intellectually legitimate means of exploring the world, and that scientific determinism ruled out the Christian conception of the world as governed by Providence. A major feature of his theology was the presentation of Christianity as a ‘reasonable’ faith, and throughout his life he maintained a particular concern for young people, having endured his own crisis of faith when a student in Edinburgh. He enjoyed a decades long involvement with the Student Christian Movement and the World Student Christian Federation, based on a mutually enriching relationship with one of its leading figures, the renowned American evangelist John Raleigh Mott. As chair of Commission IV of the 1910 World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh, Cairns spearheaded efforts to encourage the Church to redefine its role in relation to the different world religions, and to adopt a fulfilment theology that allowed for a dialogical rather than confrontational model of mission. As leader of a Y.M.C.A. sponsored interdenominational enquiry into the effects of the First World War on the religious life of the nation and attitudes to the Churches, Cairns reported on the Churches’ failure to engage with a large section of the population, and in particular with the young men at the Front. The resulting report offered an important critique of the Church and its vision in the early twentieth century, and provided a call for reform and renewal in Church life, with an emphasis on the need for social witness. The thesis concludes that in these three major areas Cairns provided a prophetic voice for the Church as it entered the twentieth century and faced the challenges of that time.

Desse modo, será incorporado à discussão as principais obras do autor: The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Essays on Philosophical Subjects, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, Lectures on Jurisprudence e Lectures on Rethoric and Belles Lettres, para aprofundar a tentativa de resposta do sistema moral de Smith.
The present work has the proposal of explaining the conception of the human nature according to the thought of Adam Smith, that is, to seek an understanding of the philosophical anthropology in the thinking of a modern philosopher and economist. In this way, the discussion will be incorporated with the main works of the author: The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Essays on Philosophical Subjects, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, Lectures on Jurisprudence and Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Letters, to deepen the answering attempts of the moral system of Smith. However, we emphasize the first work, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, for we understand that this work establishes the major assumptions of the Modern Philosophy that approach the understanding of the philosophical anthropology, and also, by situating the discussion into the scenario of the “moral crisis” that took place during the centuries of XVII and XVIII. Another observation to make on the discussion comprises the interpretation that we understand from the method adopted by Smith, who goes by the vision of man’s philosophical system and market society. So, for a moment, the theme will be addressed with elements that dialogue with other works of the thinker. In other words, we understand that the relations that magnetize the Scottish philosophical school of the “moral sense”, i.e., the conditions that are signaled to the human nature about the moral sentiments, are all propositions of a modern philosophical system that are presented, later, as social and economic science. For such, the reach searched in this work intends to answer the following question: what is the place in the thinking of Smith for the Philosophical Anthropology? In this sense, the method to be adopted in the study intends to examine the assumptions of the moral system of the thinker, in the light of the logical and temporal time of what can be called as “modern moral crisis”. The study still signs that the existing inter-subjectivity relation in the social and economic order is expressed by the sympathetic feelings – to feel with – that are suggested as an answer by the author to the new modern social and economic order and, to my understanding, is situated on the ground of the general rules of moral. With this said, we consider that sympathy is explicated as cause (social and economic convenience) and as effect (moral approval and disapproval).

Muston, Philip B. "John Smith: A charismatic and transformational religious leader." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2001. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1041.

Full text
Abstract:
John Smith is best known as the charismatic leader and president of God's Squad Motorcycle Club, which seeks to proclaim and incarnate the Christian gospel in Australian outlaw motorcycle subculture. Smith is in fact an evangelist and public figure in his own right. As well he is a teacher and social commentator whose prophetic statements and interpretation of events had an impact in his own culture and abroad. He is also a media spokesman and unofficial 'priest' for thousands who feel themselves alienated from institutional expressions of Christianity, and the pioneering founder of alternative church congregations. This biographical and theoretical study focuses on the transformational nature of Smith's charisma: his vision of the gospel as a radical and morally transforming influence. And his drive to see God's Kingdom brought to bear on earth as in heaven. It addresses the nature of the gifts that have enabled this maverick religious leader to influence the lives of many in one of the most secular cultures in the world, and to win the admiration of more orthodox church leaders who would like to have been able to bridge sub-cultures as Smith has done. It questions how his charismatic gifts function, and to what end. The study also demonstrates how Smith's gifts and character have both enabled and impeded him in the process of applying his vision. Drawing on interviews with Smith and those who have known and worked with him, as well as on Smith's own writings, talks and broadcasts, his life and career arc examined in the light of current theories pertaining to charismatic and transformational leadership. In addition the significance of his life as a leader, pioneer and minister is assessed.

Abstract:
Joanna Murray-Smith and Daniel Keene are both successful mid-career Melbourne playwrights. Taking them as a starting point and re-tracing an Australian theatrical lineage, this project explores new Melbourne narratives in which two branches of the Australian theatrical idiom converge in a single creative work, my play Friday Night, In Town. An analysis of the writing of Friday Night, In Town, authored by myself and presented for examination herein, demonstrates its narratives are structured with deliberate reference to Murray-Smith and Keene revealing a new form of contemporary urban playwriting. The play's originality, it will be shown, and its contribution to new knowledge, lie in its engagement with these playwrights and their Australian predecessors. These elements combine with a redeployment of the medieval pageant-play, which is thus reinvigorated as a mode of contemporary playwriting practice. The play text presented herein (Friday Night, In Town) represents 75 per cent of the weighting for this M.A. (by Research) with the exegetical component weighted at 25 per cent.
