Abstract:
Malaysia is striving to be a developed nation by the year 2020 as well as realize the aspirations of Dasar Transformasi Nasional within an open economy supporting globalization. The government, through its socio-economic and development policies has been promoting entrepreneurship and small businesses to sustain the nation’s economic growth in a challenging competitive global ecosystem. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the Malaysian economy and are considered to be the backbone of the nation’s industrial development. Latest statistics show that 99.6% of local businesses are micro, small and medium enterprises. As much as they play an important role in driving the nation’s economic growth, a quantitative research study by the Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Integriti Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2014 has significantly found that ethics has not been comprehensively applied in the conduct of small and micro-businesses in Malaysia. In addition, these businesses lack exposure to ethics training and education. As business ethics is important to sustain customers’ loyalty, avoid legal suits as well as drive foreign direct investment for the nation’s economic and societal wellbeing, there is a critical need to educate small and micro-businesses on ethics. Consequently, a collaborative government-academic national level research project was initiated in mid-2017 to develop a Malaysian business ethics module, Etika Perniagaan Malaysia (EPM) to address this gap. This paper shares the framework, method and content development of the business ethics module to establish and train the Professional Practitioners Group (PPG) from public and private institutions as well as related non-governmental institutions to impart business ethics knowledge to small and micro-businesses in Malaysia through active learning methods. The module hence aspires to create consciousness on the importance of ethics and its application in business for economic and social sustainability.

Abstract:
Since the turn of the century, there has been a growth in the use of e-business by both large and small companies worldwide, a trend that has been given further impetus by the move to online trading in the COVID-19 pandemic era. For small companies, there are the potential benefits of increased efficiencies and market share gain, associated with the re-engineering of selling and marketing processes; but in developing countries, such as Nigeria, research into how small businesses are using e-business systems and technologies is limited. This article builds upon earlier case study research in the Nigerian small business sector to develop a framework for e-business strategy development, implementation and review. Using an inductive approach, data was collected from six small businesses, using interviews and questionnaires, to profile the e-business operations of these companies. This study found that e-business strategy was generally lacking in these companies, but interview material was used to support the development and validation of the strategy framework, which provides a process and a checklist for small businesses pursuing e-business initiatives in developing world environments.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of business model to small, medium, and as well to large businesses in a simple framework. The paper presents the conceptual framework for the business model grounded with the quantitative business model that emphasizes profit motives. The quantitative business model, which has been in existence from the inception of business and commerce, refers to revenues minus costs and expenses equal to profits. The business model is created with the understanding of the quantitative model that is, and it shows how revenues are generated, profits are made, and costs are managed. The paper presents a simplified framework for developing a business model in a three-step process. In the three-step process for creating a business model, all participants' profit motives are considered critical for the success of the business process. The simple procedure for creating a business model presented in the paper would help both small and large businesses improve the business model creation processes to generate more value for both the customers and the companies.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to identify the factors influencing the management of the activity of small businesses and to provide recommendations for its development through the resolution of crisis issues that prevent businesses from achieving strategic prospects and stable profits. The main factors for reducing the effectiveness of small businesses have been identified on the basis of the results of the questionnaire survey of one level of managers (small business directors), which should be taken into account in the formation of strategic management decisions and long-term development strategies. It is found that many of the factors are subject to managerial influence, which minimizes the negative impact on the performance of small business entities. The hypothesis that the main tool for stimulating small business development remains the state has confirmed with the help of research, but there is an urgent objective need to identify other factors that influence the activities of small businesses that impede their development and lead to closure. The study suggests that only a balance between the internal environment of small businesses and the regulatory framework of the state will allow them to work effectively in market conditions and provide the national economy with money. The authors present a position on the organization of a small business entity management system that reflects the links between processes and events in a market environment. The presented approach takes into account a number of elements of influence on a small business when forecasting its development in a strategic perspective. The results of the study showed that it is necessary to clearly identify the tasks at each stage of development of a small business entity, to form alternative models of its development by looking for ways to optimize activities and opportunities to avoid possible risks.

Abstract:
In many rural and remote communities, residents have traditionally relied on jobs in natural resource-based industries. Over the years, employment has been steadily reduced due to changes in these industries. Both the communities, faced with declining populations as a result, and the residents are examining the potential of small business to create economic development. However, these locations create challenges for small business operators. Some communities experience accessibility and transportation issues and often lack standard business infrastructure. At the same time, the very nature of these rural areas can become components of a marketing strategy. This paper will examine three conceptualizations of rural and the commodification process and propose a framework for positioning the concept of rural as part of a marketing strategy. Three case studies from a rural region in Canada will be presented and analyzed within this framework. The paper concludes with recommendations for rural businesses, communities and governments and other interested parties within the context of rural economic development.

This study examined a variety of predictors as they related to survival of small businesses and their perceived success. Specifically, we assessed the relationships of perceptions of success and survival of small businesses with the motivational sources to begin the business, the four requirements cited by Drucker (1985), marketing and business planning activity, financial base, handling of business problems and identified sources of assistance with those problems, and demographics or business backgrounds of the small business owners. 128 small business owners representing the service, manufacturing, and retail sectors were interviewed. The marketing variables were the only ones that were predictive of success, suggesting the need for a more comprehensive framework to assess success of small businesses.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a theoretical framework for understanding information literacy (IL) within the context of a small business workplace environment. The theoretical framework developed related IL competencies to competencies for success as described by the psychologist Howard Gardner in his book “Five Minds for the Future”. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical framework was developed using the CILIP Seven Pillars for IL and Howard Gardner’s Five Minds theory. Indicative connections between the Seven Pillars and Five Minds were identified by the researchers. The framework was tested through analysis of transcripts from qualitative interviews conducted with four small business owners. Findings Connections were found between the Seven Pillars and the Five Minds; some which had been projected by the researchers and others which had not. The theoretical framework aided description of and understanding of IL within small business workplace environments. Research limitations/implications A small sample size limits the generalizability of the findings, and further testing of the framework is required. The findings do, however, suggest that the context in which IL manifests remains significant and should be further examined in wider and divergent contexts. Originality/value Using theory from psychology paired with a well-known theory of IL to develop a new theoretical framework is novel. The framework developed offers a new way of understanding the role of IL within the context of small business workplaces.

Entrepreneurship and small business management literatures diverged decades ago, with the former receiving the bulk of subsequent scholarly attention. The concept of a small business orientation (SBO) has not been widely and consistently employed in the literature. We present a conceptual framework aimed at clarifying the construct of SBO, and conceptualize SBO as a firm size- and age-independent phenomenon operating at the individual level, and reflecting manager values about how the business ought to be conducted. We discuss the values-based derivation of SBO, identify elements of this multidimensional construct, its likely consequences, and propose future research directions.

Hadoop MapReduce has arrived to solve the problem of treatment of big data, also the parallel treatment, with this framework the authors analyze, process a large size of data. It based for distributing the work in two big steps, the map and the reduce steps in a cluster or big set of machines. They apply the MapReduce framework to solve some problems in the domain of process mining how provides a bridge between data mining and business process analysis, this technique consists to mine lot of information from the process traces; In process mining, there are two steps, correlation definition and the process inference. The work consists in first time of mining patterns whom are the work flow of the process from execution traces, those patterns present the work or the history of each party of the process, the authors' small patterns are represented in this work by finite state automaton or their regular expression, the authors have only two patterns to facilitate the process, the general presentation of the process is the combination of the small mining patterns. The patterns are represented by the regular expressions (ab)* and (ab*c)*. Secondly, they compute the patterns, and combine them using the Hadoop MapReduce framework, in this work they have two general steps, first the Map step, they mine small patterns or small models from business process, and the second is the combination of models as reduce step. The authors use the business process of two web applications, the SKYPE, and VIBER applications. The general result shown that the parallel distributed process by using the Hadoop MapReduce framework is scalable, and minimizes the execution time.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate security evaluation practices among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in small South African towns when adopting cloud business intelligence (Cloud BI). The study employed a quantitative design in which 57 SMEs from the Limpopo Province were surveyed using an online questionnaire. The study found that: (1) the level of cybersecurity threats awareness among decision-makers was high; (2) decision-makers preferred simple checklists and guidelines over conventional security policies, standards, and frameworks; and (3) decision-makers considered financial risks, data and application security, and cloud service provider reliability as the main aspects to consider when evaluating Cloud BI applications. The study conceptualised a five-component security framework for evaluating Cloud BI applications, integrating key aspects of conventional security frameworks and methodologies. The framework was validated for relevance by IT specialists and acceptance by SME owners. The Spearman correlational test for relevance and acceptance of the proposed framework was found to be highly significant at p < 0.05. The study concluded that SMEs require user-friendly frameworks for evaluating Cloud BI applications. The major contribution of this study is the security evaluation framework conceptualised from the best practices of existing security standards and frameworks for use by decision-makers from small towns in Limpopo. The study recommends that future research consider end-user needs when customising or proposing new solutions for SMEs in small towns.

Abstract:
Russia, East Germany, and India are just a few of the many countries around the world which have opened up their economies to global trade in the last decade. This trend has forced organizations, especially state-owned enterprises, to face a changing environment, one driven by innovation, efficiency, competition, and marketing. Privatization of these enterprises has been taking place at record speed. National and multinational organizations have replaced state-owned operations in hopes of boosting a nation’s interantional competitiveness and economic growth. However, privatization alone will not solve the many problems created by open market trade. The vitality of these economies may well depend on the nation’s ability to foster its own entrepreneurial sector of small businesses. Continual training of these business is needed to ensure economic goals are reached. Each nation must determine the training needs of these businesses through needs analysis studies. A framework, based on a study conducted for the South Texas Regional Small Business Development Center (SBDC) located in San Antonio, Texas, is provided. Results indicate that the most frequently cited problem areas by small businesses fall into two general categories: Finance and Governmental Relations. The level of concern for the areas identified has been found to vary by the age of the business. However, the need for basic business skills, such as marketing, finance, and accounting, is ever present in differing degrees of specialization. Seminars and a mixture of communicational tools were found to be the most effective delivery system for the information required by businesses in the region. In addition, factor analysis was used to group together specific problematic areas for small businesses in the region. Seven dimensions were identified and include the following: Work force development, financing and legal issues, marketing, technology issues, daily operations, and selling.

Abstract:
Given the critical consequences that IT can have on the survival of SMEs in a competitive environment, ITSM practices have becoming a necessity for SMEs that must be investigated. ITIL is criticized as being appropriate for large enterprises and less for SMEs. Thus, it calls for tailoring this framework while taking into consideration the specific realities of small companies. In this context, this article provides a practical tool formally developed according to the design science research approach, and it addresses an area of relevance to both practitioners and academics and suggests solutions that can help managers to personalize IT service practices to suit the characteristics of small scale enterprises. Results show that the flexible nature of the proposed framework has enabled to overcome the main difficulties of ITIL components implementation in small scale environments. It is found that the integrated use of balanced scorecard perspectives and ITIL practices can help SMEs to better implement ITIL components, achieving in that way a better alignment between the business and the IT.

Abstract:
High failure rates among youth-owned small retail businesses has prompted the need for strengthening sustainability in the sector. The current paper sought to establish a framework for use in determining youth-owned small retail business sustainability. An exploratory mixed study approach was followed (qualitative and quantitative methods). Snowball and cluster sampling procedures were utilized to select respondents. Data were collected using semi-structured interview guides and close ended questionnaires. Qualitative data was analyzed using the Atlas.ti version 7 software network techniques, while the IBM SPSS version 25 techniques were utilized to generate quantitative results. Principal component analysis outcomes reflected that the framework for measuring youth-owned small retail business sustainability comprises 6 major components. The components included security measures (18.01%), outsourcing abilities (13.70%), marketing strategies (10.07%), risk management (8.54%), financial management (8.43%) and innovation (7.89%). The six pillars of the criteria were utilized to further develop time specific indices that were expressed in the following formula: R1 = ƒ (SM1, OA1, MS1, RM1, FM1, I1, S1) + e. Based on this formula, the sustainability of youth-owned small retail businesses can be assessed based on the six pillars on the right side of the equation and other subjective attributes at a particular time. The current study provided a framework that can be used by managers and practitioners to determine key sustainability building blocks of youth-owned small retail business at a particular time and track how they change over time.

Abstract:
The business world today is characterised by a high degree of globalisation and internationalisation - a phenomena which affect all firms irrespective of size. After a summary of current learning theories, and the representation of an SME as a 'potentially unique problem type', the paper offers a critique of previous studies on internationalisation. A research methodology of 'bootstrapping' is utilised to develop a framework for explaining how SMEs in Malaysia identify, then tackle, opportunities and threats in the international arena. A broad analytical framework is developed, combining partial frameworks of insight from the literature in a range of academic disciplines (SMEs, strategic management, internationalisation and learning theory) with insights from key informants in current empirical work. The value chain is an essential component of the overall framework, underpinned by an organisational learning perspective. Our initial findings are only tentative. We do not present a 'model' of good business practice, rather a conceptual framework to examine how SMEs learn to develop in an international sense. This framework is helpful in explaining the development of firms encountered in our empirical research.

Abstract:
An important factor in the development of small and medium-sized businesses is consulting support that helps to attract investment. According to studies, investment advice prefers to follow a large business, while highly relevant issues of interaction between investors and small and medium-sized business project initiators often remain out of sight. The article reviews and analyzes the best practices for holding mini-forums aimed at creating sustainable links between project initiators in need of investment and private investors willing to invest in highly efficient business projects. This kind of interaction format increases the productivity of consulting activities in the field of helping small and medium-sized business project initiators in finding investments. Holding domestic mini-forums today is concentrated in the framework of the ‘Business Angels of Russia’ Community. Within the framework of mini-forums, investors can get detailed information about several projects at once, and project initiators find their investor faster and easier. Consultants, in turn, expand the range of potential clients. In general, the practice of holding mini-forums contributes to the activation of potential and existing investors and the development of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia.

Abstract:
Much of the literature on small firm marketing has adopted the Western marketing paradigm. Though researchers such as Kindle (1982) and Waldie (1980) have pointed to the importance of using traditional cultural values in understanding Chinese marketing decisions, there is no major study of Chinese small firm marketing which adopts this approach. Siu and Kirby (1995) suggest an integrative approach — blending the process model and the contingency approach in building and advancing small firm marketing theory. Hence the marketing process model proposed by Brooksbank (1990) is adopted as the research framework for understanding the marketing activities of small firms in Hong Kong. Six broad areas relating to business philosophy, strategic analysis, marketing objectives, marketing strategy, marketing organization and marketing control are identified. The contingency model used by Brooksbank, Kirby and Wright (1992) is adopted to identify different types of performing companies. In addition, Yau's (1994) Chinese cultural value orientations are adopted to explain the likely Chinese cultural influences. Five types of value orientation are used as to provide the analytical framework, namely Man-to-nature Orientation, Man-to-himself Orientation, Relational Orientation, Time Orientation, and Personal-activity Orientation. The research results reveal that Chinese small firms in Hong Kong exhibit different marketing behaviour from their western counterparts, when compared with UK findings for example. Higher performing Chinese small firms place marketing as the leading or joint leading role in their corporate planning processes and also adopt a longer-term strategic planning approach. They also use more aggressive marketing strategies and put more emphasis on product performance and credit support. However, explicit marketing control devices appear not to be used. The influence of Chinese cultural values on the marketing activities of Chinese small firms in Hong Kong is found to be significant.

Abstract:
Subject. Agricultural business cannot evolve successfully without innovation used in their operations. The low demand for marketing, corporate and environmental innovations stem from the underdevelopment of the innovative environment and infrastructure of regional agriculture, in particular. Objectives. We analyze the use of innovation in agriculture, evaluate the demand for various types of innovation among small agricultural businesses. Methods. The study relies upon such methods as monograph, abstraction logic analysis, analysis and synthesis, economic analysis, economic-statistical analysis. The statistical framework is based on official statistics of the Federal State Statistics Service. Results. The article points out the most promising types of marketing, organizational and administrative, environmental innovation. If they are capable of allowing for the implementation of organizational and administrative innovation, such entities are found to derive additional effects from new technology. It is hard for small and medium-sized agricultural businesses to implement innovation on their own. Thus, they can raise their performance by cooperating with large businesses. The article shows how small and large businesses may cooperate to master innovation. Conclusions and Relevance. Igniting the innovative activity of small agricultural businesses becomes a key to the food independence and security of the country. Innovation can be used more broadly if there is an appropriate innovative environment, which requires to improve the regulatory framework and refine the innovation encouragement mechanisms, incentives, stronger and deeper integration of agricultural science and production. There should be provisions of the agricultural policy, which would help various innovations permeate production processes of small agricultural businesses.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to shed light on how strategic fits between market orientation and the prospector strategy leads to higher performance of small businesses in Vietnam. This study draws from the contingency theory of organization to propose that strategic fits in small businesses represent by prospector strategy's mediating effects on the link between market orientation and these small businesses' performance. Data collected from 161 small businesses in Vietnam was examined. PLS-SEM was used to assess the research framework. The results reveal that the fit between market orientation and the prospector strategy, represented by the full mediating effects of this strategy, is essential to determine the performance improvement of small businesses in Vietnam. For the findings, this study provides some practical implications for small business owners in Vietnam. This study also contributes to the strategic management literature by providing empirical evidence, which suggests the strategic fits between prospector strategy and market orientation induces performance. This study also overcomes the limitations relating to the proposals of the analytic framework to assess strategic fits. Lastly, this study extends to strategic management literature by examining the role of strategic fit in small businesses' contexts.

Abstract:
Financial technology or “FinTech” is an amalgam of the use of technology for financial transactions and processes. Fintech adoption for business processes by small businesses largely remains unexplored in the context of emerging markets. This study was conducted during late 2018 using a sample of 117 owner and managers of small businesses in India, for exploring the fintech adoption through the Technology Organization Environment (TOE) framework. The method applied for data analysis was partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). It was found that perceived direct benefits of fintech had a significant effect on fintech adoption. Counter-intuitively, the perceived cost of fintech adoption was not a significant factor in fintech adoption. These results have significant managerial and academic relevance for understanding fintech adoption agenda of small businesses in the emerging markets.

Abstract:
In spite of increasing interest on performance measurement systems during last 30 years, there is not visible any significant deviation from widely used financial measures in Czech business environment. These are generally criticized on account of several reasons: lag information content, bad fitting with information age competition and difficult communication to employees. Shift from the financial perspective to the non-financial one within the performance management invoked genesis of different performance measurement systems. The aim of this paper was therefore to establish the status of current knowledge in the area of performance measurement systems for small and medium enterprise. This theoretical phase of the research was based on the study of up-to-date reviews and it focused on the description of the most recent performance measurement systems. Further after considering Czech business specifics suitable base for performance measurement system was chosen and the framework of whole performance measurement system not dissimilar to Balanced Scorecard was designed. After considering the circumstances of the micro-brewing segment in the Czech Republic this article resulted in designing an example system suitable for usage among Czech micro-breweries.

Abstract:
The development of small business in the Russian Federation is a very important urgent problem, as it will make it possible to solve many important social programs in the country. However, in terms of the scale of development of this sector, Russia lags far behind the leading foreign countries. In the Russian Federation, since 2015, there has been a negative trend in the volume of lending to SMEs. Only in 2018, the volume of loans to SMEs stabilized, and at the beginning of 2019, an increase in the volume of the loan portfolio of SMEs by 1 % is already noted. In modern economic conditions, the main source of financial resources for small businesses, from the point of view of their availability and opportunities for obtaining, is lending. The article examines the development trends of lending to such an important segment of economic activity as small business. Supporting small businesses in the Russian Federation is one of the priority tasks of the country’s socio-economic development. In all regions of the country, a network of government agencies has been created that provide information support to existing and emerging entrepreneurs (Entrepreneurship Support Centers based on the My Business platform), many seminars and forums dedicated to the development of entrepreneurship are held. Within the framework of this interaction, entrepreneurs can receive free of charge not only consulting services, but also assistance in developing a business plan, creating a corporate identity, developing and modernizing websites, conducting marketing research, and drawing up statutory documents. The activities within the framework of state support for small businesses in accordance with the State Program are highlighted and the importance of effective implementation of these activities for the development of small business lending is analyzed. The problems of lending to small businesses in the Russian Federation, obstacles that arise both from banks when they either cannot offer attractive lending programs, or refuse borrowers to provide a loan, and from entrepreneurs who refuse such a source of financing for small businesses, are considered. like lending. Measures are proposed to create favorable conditions for lending to small businesses, which are focused on supporting specific borrowers and those that are focused on supporting commercial banks and the banking system as a whole. The strategic guidelines of a commercial bank for the development of small business lending have been determined.

Abstract:
We explore patterns of take-up of Business Link services in Northamptonshire, a county in the East Midlands region of the UK. Our findings indicate a relationship between small firm growth and use of Business Link. The results suggest that newer firms that are larger and experiencing growth are more likely to approach Business Link in order to ‘cope with’ rapid growth, whereas those seeking to internationalise are more likely to do so when stimulated by Business Link. On the basis of these findings we develop a framework for understanding different forms of engagement between small and medium-sized enterprises and Business Link service providers, and how these relationships develop and change over time. This framework highlights variations in the modes of engagement between these two parties and highlights the dynamic and evolving nature of interaction between small business and Business Link as an intrinsic driver of take-up of services.

Abstract:
Small businesses deploy specific and transactionally focused approaches to market development and selling that re-define the notion of marketing within this particular organizational context. Indeed, most smaller businesses use alternative terms to marketing to describe these activities. In-depth interviews with small and medium-sized enterprises in the north of England indicated that the most appropriate and meaningful phrases were ‘generating orders’ and ‘developing markets’. The interview transcripts identified specific activities and phases undertaken by small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as their sequence and phasing, generating a shared process framework that was common to the businesses surveyed. Process constraints were analysed, as well as possible means of intervention to enable order generation and winning new business in the small firm.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to model and empirically test the determinants of small accommodation business (SAB) size.Design/methodology/approachThis study distinguishes among three aspects of SAB size (accommodation scale, investment and employment) and between two modes of growth (managerial and entrepreneurial growth). A conceptual framework was developed based on business growth theory, whereby three econometric models were constructed and estimated to predict size variations. Data were collected through a survey on 200 SABs in North Zhejiang Province of China. Effects of the determinants were contrasted between different size indicators.FindingsThe SAB size can be affected by personal factors (employed working experience, education level, industry-specific know-how), interpersonal factor (relative ties to other SABs) and environmental factor (association support). The interpersonal and environmental factors tend to contribute to managerial growth, while the personal factors are usually conducive to entrepreneurial growth.Research limitations/implicationsThis study addresses the questions of “why some SABs grow larger in size than others” and “why different SABs grow in different ways”. But more contexts and business types should be examined so as to ensure generalizability through future studies.Practical implicationsThe research findings can provide guidelines for local tourism administration to encourage or regulate SAB development.Originality/valueThis study is among the first endeavors to examine the multidimensionality and determinants of business size in tourism and hospitality; it contributes to literature by expanding tourism entrepreneurship research into a/the “growth paradigm”.

Modern trends in the progress of society put small business in a framework when there is a need to grow rapidly and comply with new standards of the business world. The existence of a small business depends on how thoroughly, efficiently and up-to-date it is possible to track the incoming information about the markets and goods with which the business works. The authors argue that providing business with information resources is one of the most important aspects for the successful operation of trade enterprises and increasing their efficiency. For this, this article analyzes the main information systems in trade and the benefits of digitalization. It is information technology that can provide a strategic competitive advantage. In conclusion, the authors make specific proposals for information technology management in small business.

An issue facing the manager of a small business is the use of cloud computing to meet the information technology (IT) needs of the firm. These businesses typically have limited in-house IT capabilities and often outsource much of their IT. This paper discusses this rapidly evolving technology and provides a framework for businesses to decide on harnessing the power of cloud computing. It recommends the appropriate decision based on the way in which IT is currently used in the enterprise and future needs to meet competitive challenges. The potential cost savings, technology insurance from cloud computing, and security risks are discussed and factored into the decision.

Abstract:
This article explores generic and industry-specific barriers to inheritance among family businesses within the tourism and hospitality industry. Data from comparable surveys of owners of tourism and hospitality businesses in Denmark and Canada reveal a very low rate of inheritance and a number of industry-specific barriers, including those related to location (e.g., remoteness and small-town settings result in out-migration by children who do not share their parents' lifestyle goals); nature of the work (long hours, high contact with customers, and hands-on labor make the business unappealing); viability of the business (seasonality of demand, taxes, or inseparability of business and family assets result in low potential for inheritance); and the lifestage of parents and children (many owners are in a second career or preretirement enterprise, and children cannot become involved). A number of hypotheses arise from this research and a framework for examining generic and industry-specific barriers is presented, with commentary on how other industries could be examined for these barriers.
