Abstract:
Shearing tests and penetration tests were combined to determine the mechanical behavior of a stainless steel metal treated by surface mechanical attrition (SMA). SMAT is a usual treatment to strengthen the hardness of treated surface by severe mechanical strain, which generates also a gradient through the direction of thickness. This paper aimed at investigating the behavior of sheet metals treated by means of SMAT under impact loading. Double shearing tests at high strain rate were performed using Hopkinson bar. The experimental results demonstrated notable strain rate sensitivity and a good ductility without sacrificing the strength. An impact perforation test is also performed using inversed perforation test in order to study its sensibility of failure to the loading rate.

Abstract:
Different types of business strategy and a number of sophisticated strategy-based techniques have emerged to support and meet the challenges of global competition and customer satisfaction. As a manufacturing organization’s business strategies, such as strategic pattern, strategic mission, and strategic positioning are different- the satisfaction levels of various Strategic Management Accounting Techniques (SMAT) can vary accordingly. This study discussed the degree of similarity and variances of these in listed manufacturing organizations in Bangladesh. Research question of the study is whether relationships between the satisfaction levels of different SMAT and different types of strategic pattern, vision, mission and positioning in listed manufacturing organizations of Bangladesh have been prevailing? Secondary data were collected from 100 listed companies between August and October, 2016. For statistical analysis we used ANOVA test. Out of 16 types of SMAT, none of the techniques found satisfied, few of the techniques are in neutral positions, and most of these are in dissatisfic levels. Study found that the SMAT varies between countries due to economical and cultural differences. Authors found that there is no difference in satisfaction level of different types of SMA techniques identified by the authors based on a previous study. Studics also found that there is significant difference in strategic mission and strategic positioning at 95% confidence interval, respectively.

Abstract:
In this work, the use of a nanocrystallization surface treatment is considered on a cobalt based alloy. Since the Co28Cr6Mo is widely used as an articular bearing surface for artificial joints like hip and knee prostheses, the improvement of its tribological properties is a matter of concern to extend the lifespan of implants. By means of SMA (Surface Mechanical Attrition) treatment, a nanostructured layer is formed at the surface of a CoCrMo alloy establishing an optimized hardness gradient down to a depth of a few hundred of microns. Different treatment times (5, 15 and 25 minutes) are assessed comparatively and several surface polishing methods are studied: with clothes, brushes and a liquid filled with abrasive particles. The influence of processing parameters is discussed regarding hardness and topography. Moreover, the impact of surface modification is examined in terms of wear strengthening through scratch testing. The use of increasing loads mode gives some evidence of the benefit of SMAT. A significant decrease of penetration depth is noticed, from 30% to 60% on average. A straight correlation is also noticed depending on the surface finish method. This study illustrates both the ability of micro scratch testing to assess comparatively treated surface layer and to highlight the benefit of SMAT for wear strengthening in an abrasive wear mode.

Abstract:
The aim of the present study is first to describe an original process, the so called duplex process, whose feature is the coupling between the well-known SMAT (Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment) and the traditional co-rolling. The first step of this process consists of SMA-Treatment of 316L stainless steel sheets to generate nanocrystalline layers on their top surfaces according to the grain refinement mechanism of austenitic steels which is well described in the literature. During the second step, three treated sheets are co-rolled at 550°C to obtain a semi-massive nanocrystallised multilayer structure with improved mechanical strength alternating nanocrystalline, transition and coarse grain layers. The second part of this work deals with the mechanical and the microstructural characterization of the as-obtained structures. Thus, sharp nanoindentation tests performed over the cross section of the laminates coupled with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) confirm the presence of nanograins after the thermomechanical treatment. In addition, the enhanced yield strength demonstrated by tensile tests correlate well with the theoretical volume fractions of nanoand transition layers. The interface cohesion between the sheets is tested by three-point bending tests and the interface bonding is evaluated by microstructural observations.

Abstract:
Intrathecal delivery of Nusinersen – an antisense oligonucleotide that promotes survival motor neuron (SMN) protein induction – is an approved therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Here, we employed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to longitudinally characterize the unknown metabolic effects of Nusinersen in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of SMA patients across disease severity. Modulation of amino acid metabolism is a common denominator of biochemical changes induced by Nusinersen, with distinct downstream metabolic effects according to disease severity. In severe SMA1 patients, Nusinersen stimulates energy-related glucose metabolism. In intermediate SMA2 patients, Nusinersen effects are also related to energy homeostasis but involve ketone body and fatty acid biosynthesis. In milder SMA3 patients, Nusinersen mainly modulates amino acid metabolism. Moreover, Nusinersen modifies the CSF metabolome of a more severe clinical group towards the profile of untreated SMA patients with milder disease. These findings reveal disease severity-specific neurometabolic signatures of Nusinersen treatment, suggesting a selective modulation of peripheral organ metabolism by this CNS-directed therapy in severe SMA patients.

Abstract:
Metallic structures, in various industrial fields such as transport and aerospace, are mostly replaced by composite structures having less weight and good strength. There is also a need of intensification of the operational dynamic environment with high durability requirements. So a smart composite structure is required that can manifest its functions according to environmental changes. One method of producing smart composite structures is to embed shape memory alloys in composite structures. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have significant mechanical and thermodynamic properties and are available in very small diameters less than 0.2mm. These SMAs are embedded into composites for obtaining smart composites having tunable properties, active abilities, damping capacity and self-healing properties. Shape memory alloys are available in different shapes as wires, sheets, foils, strips, etc. For smart composites, mostly SMA embedded are in wire shape. Different techniques are used for embedding SMA wires in composites. SMA wires can be embedded between layers of laminates of composites, or embedded directly as reinforcement in matrix and can be woven into fabrics and used as a reinforcement. This paper reviews the different techniques of embedding SMA wires in composite structures, their pros and cons and their applications.

Abstract:
Schistosoma mansoni is a parasite that causes bilharzia, a neglected tropical disease affecting hundreds of millions of people each year worldwide. In 2012, S. mansoni had been identified as the only invertebrate possessing two SERCA-type Ca2+-ATPases, SMA1 and SMA2. However, our analysis of recent genomic data shows that the presence of two SERCA pumps is rather frequent in parasitic flatworms. To understand the reasons of this redundancy in S. mansoni, we compared SMA1 and SMA2 at different levels. In terms of sequence and organization, the genes SMA1 and SMA2 are similar, suggesting that they might be the result of a duplication event. At the protein level, SMA1 and SMA2 only slightly differ in length and in the sequence of the nucleotide-binding domain. To get functional information on SMA1, we produced it in an active form in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as previously done for SMA2. Using phosphorylation assays from ATP, we demonstrated that like SMA2, SMA1 bound calcium in a cooperative mode with an apparent affinity in the micromolar range. We also showed that SMA1 and SMA2 had close sensitivities to cyclopiazonic acid but different sensitivities to thapsigargin, two specific inhibitors of SERCA pumps. On the basis of transcriptomic data available in GeneDB, we hypothesize that SMA1 is a housekeeping Ca2+-ATPase, whereas SMA2 might be required in particular striated-like muscles like those present the tail of the cercariae, the infecting form of the parasite.

The application of SMA actuators in smart structures usually involves thermally induced phase transformation with a variable applied stress in SMA actuators, resulting in thermomechanical nonproportional loading of SMAs in stress-temperature space. To investigate the constitutive response of SMAs under thermomechanical nonproportional loading, experiments for thermally induced phase transformation of binary NiTi SMA wires loaded by an elastic linear spring are performed in the Active Materials Laboratory at Texas A&M University. A constitutive model developed by Bo and Lagoudas (1998a, b, c) and Lagoudas and Bo (1998) is used as the basis for the theoretical prediction of the response of SMA line actuators loaded by springs with different elastic constants. Model predictions are compared with experimental results.

Abstract:
135 Background: Shared medical appointments (SMA) offer a novel approach to improve efficiency and quality of care consistent with the goals of the Institute of Medicine. To our knowledge, there are no established SMA models for oncology patients undergoing treatment. Our objective was to develop and implement a SMA for chemotherapy education and clearance for women with gynecologic cancer. Methods: We first assessed the level of interest in SMAs among our patients and providers through qualitative interviews. We subsequently created a multidisciplinary team comprised of physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, pharmacists, administrators, health education specialists and members of the QI Department. Our project consisted of several phases: 1) provider buy-in, 2) program development, 3) staff education, 4) implementation; and 5) patient recruitment. A plan-do-study-act cycle was performed following each SMA, using patient and provider feedback. Appropriate modifications were made before the subsequent SMA. Results: Both patients and providers identified pre-chemotherapy as an optimal area to pilot SMAs. We established a multidisciplinary Shared Medical Appointment and Readiness Teaching (SMART) clinic for all gynecologic oncology patients initiating chemotherapy with platinum- and taxane-based regimens. This model of care provides patient education within a framework of social support that empowers patients. We developed a standardized chemotherapy education presentation, and also provided patients with a tool kit that consisted of chemotherapy drug education, a guide to managing side effects, advanced directives and center contact information. Surveyed patients reported being highly satisfied with the group visit and would recommend SMA to other patients. Our preliminary data analysis revealed that SMART visits decreased wait time and increased value-added time for patients. Conclusions: SMAs for oncology patients initiating chemotherapy is both novel and feasible. A patient centric model, collaboration of multidisciplinary team members, and timely responsiveness to constructive feedback are essential to the successful integration of SMAs in an academic center.

Abstract:
The main drawbacks of SMA actuators are a slow response and a waste of electric power. The power should be continuously supplied for SMA elements to remain in the austenite state until the actuator begins to move to the other position. The problems are more serious when batteries and thick SMA elements are used. We develop a new SMA actuator which consumes little energy and responds very quickly. The actuator consists of a specially designed bias spring structure, and two SMA elements which exert the force in opposite direction to each other. The bias spring, unlike a common spring which has one stable position, has two stable positions. A SMA1, for instance, contracts on heating by electricity, the actuator takes one stable configuration. No further power supply is necessary to maintain the stable position, providing enough time for the SMA1 to cool. When the other SMA2 is heated, it contracts with enough force to move the bias spring and to expand the already-cooled SMA1. Power supply stops immediately after the actuator takes the other stable configuration, causing power saving and quick response.

Abstract:
Recent advances in materials science have led to the development of smart materials that can continuously adapt to different loading conditions and changing environment to meet the growing demand for smart structural systems. The unique characteristics of superelastic NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) have attracted the attention of structural engineers worldwide. SMAs are metallic materials that can retrieve their original shape upon exposure to various temperatures or loading/unloading conditions with minimal residual deformation. SMAs have found increasing applications in the building industry because of their high strength, high actuation and damping capacities, good durability, and superior fatigue resistance. Despite the research conducted on the structural applications of SMAs during the previous decades, the existing literature lacks reviews on their recent uses in building industry such as prestressing concrete beams, seismic strengthening of footing–column connections, and fiber-reinforced concrete. Furthermore, scarce research exists on their performance under corrosive environments, elevated temperatures, and intensive fires. Moreover, the high manufacturing cost of SMA and the lack of knowledge transfer from research to practice are the main obstacles behind their limited use in concrete structures. This paper sheds light on the latest progress made in the applications of SMA in reinforced concrete structures during the last two decades. In addition, the paper concludes with the recommendations and future opportunities associated with expanding the use of SMA in civil infrastructures.

Abstract:
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have great potential for use in the field of civil engineering. The authors of this paper have been involved, from 1996, in several experimental and theoretical studies of the application of SMAs in civil engineering, for national and international research projects. This paper provides an overview of the main results achieved, consisting of the conceptual design, implementation, and testing of three families of SMA-based devices, namely: (i) special braces for framed structures, (ii) seismic isolation devices for buildings and bridges, and (iii) smart ties for arches and vaults. The main advantage of using SMA-based devices in the seismic protection of structures comes from the double-flag shape of their hysteresis loops, which implies three favorable features, i.e., self-centering capability, good energy dissipation capability, and high stiffness at small displacements. The main advantage of smart ties comes from the thermal behavior of SMA superelastic wires, which is opposite to that of steel rod. This implies a strong reduction of the force changes caused by variations of air temperature.

Abstract:
Ever since its discovery, the applications of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) can be found across a range of application domains, from structural design to medical technology. This is based upon the unique and inherent characteristics such as thermal Shape Memory Effect (SME) and Superelasticity (or Pseudoelasticity). While thermal SME is used for shape morphing applications wherein temperature change can govern the shape and dimension of the SMA, Superelasticity allows the alloy to withstand a comparatively very high magnitude of loads without undergoing plastic deformation at higher temperatures. These unique properties in wearables have revolutionized the field, and from fabrics to exoskeletons, SMA has found its place in robotics and cobotics. This review article focuses on the most recent research work in the field of SMA-based smart wearables paired with robotic applications for human-robot interaction. The literature is categorized based on SMA property incorporated and on actuator or sensor-based concept. Further, use-cases or conceptual frameworks for SMA fiber in fabric for ‘Smart Jacket’ and SMA springs in the shoe soles for ‘Smart Shoes’ are proposed. The conceptual frameworks are built upon existing technologies; however, their utility in a smart factory concept is emphasized, and algorithms to achieve the same are proposed. The integration of the two concepts with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is discussed, specifically regarding minimizing hazards for the worker/user in Industry 5.0. The article aims to propel a discussion regarding the multi-faceted applications of SMAs in human-robot interaction and Industry 5.0. Furthermore, the challenges and the limitations of the smart alloy and the technological barriers restricting the growth of SMA applications in the field of smart wearables are observed and elaborated.
