Abstract:
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of kecombrang flower extract (Etlingera elatior jack R.M.sm) on the death of Culex quenquefasciatus Say larvae. Experimental animals used were Culex quenquefasciatus Say larvae, amounting to 625 tails. The design used was a randomized complete design with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The five treatments consisted of two test groups, namely the treatment group consisting of concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and the control group consisting of positive control namely abate and negative control namely aquades. Observation of mosquito larvae death was done every 2 hours for 12 hours. The data obtained were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and continued with the Duncan test. Based on the results of the one way ANOVA calculation the value of sig.0.00 <0.05 means that there are significant differences between treatments. Duncan test results on the treatment of 10% and 15% kecombrang flower extract have the ability as a larvicide high and equal to positive control (abate). Based on the results of the study it was concluded that the extract of kecombrang flower (Etlingera elatior jack R.M.sm) had the ability to larvae against the Culex quenquefasciatus Say mosquito.

Abstract:
Robert Creeley's long and productive writing life has resolutely witnessed personal rather than public change. Notoriously self-absorbed, his reticent poetry is fiercely individual in style and solipsistic in outlook. Like the poet, a man of few words, wryly humorous and intelligently self-contained, Creeley's poems seem determined “to say as little as possible as often as possible.” Yet the tightly crafted economy of this poetic idiom masks a curious amplitude which is easy to overlook. The tension between the persistent “circularities” in Creeley's work, his concern with the dualistic energies of contradiction and paradox, and the brevity with which such concerns are typically addressed, is worth noting, especially in the light of Creeley's abiding friendship with fellow poet, Robert Duncan, of whom Creeley once remarked:I've always felt very close to him as a writer, although our modes of writing must seem to readers quite apart. I tend to write very sparely, and Robert has a lovely, relaxed and generous kind of movement. But…[he] showed me kinds of content that I hadn't previously recognized.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Utilizamos B.glabrata (Belo Horizonte, MG), B.tenagophila (Vale do Paraíba, SP) e B. straminea (Picos, PI).

Morena, Enrico. "A Creative Exploration of Techniques Employed in Pop/Rock Drum Patterns (1965–1992): A dissertation with supporting audio and video recordings." Thesis, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2440/135485.

Full text
Abstract:
The exploration of creative rhythmic drum patterns – many of which borrow from divergent musical styles – continues to be a focus for those at the vanguard of contemporary drumming. This performance-based study, submitted for the degree of PhD at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, looks at six representative pop/rock drummers who remain revered for their signature drum patterns. The drummers in question are Ginger Baker, Stewart Copeland, Sly Dunbar, Steve Gadd, Zigaboo Modeliste and Bernard Purdie, who reached arguably the high point of their creativity between 1965- 1992, each of them being celebrated for their absorption of cross-stylistic influences and imaginative use of techniques in the creation of new rhythmic patterns. Ginger Baker’s early recordings in the mid-1960s saw him combining African and jazz influences with rock/blues rhythms, establishing him as a pioneer in this field and creating a platform for other drummers to follow. This investigation highlights the prolific output of the above-mentioned drummers during this period, subsiding noticeably by the early 1990s due to the advancement of the drum machine and programming in the recording studio. Each of these drummers has in their own way profoundly shaped the direction of pop/rock music, and each of them constitutes a rich resource for the contemporary pop/rock drummer. The intention here is to expand the creative potential of these resources and recontextualise each drummer’s signature drum patterns so that we can speculate what Bernard Purdie’s patterns might be like if performed by Ginger Baker, Stewart Copeland, and so on. This kind of self-referentialism is pursued in the belief that not only does it give greater insight into each drummer’s technical and rhythmic syntax, but it leads to outcomes greater than the sum of their parts. The original source recordings have been analysed aurally and this process of aural analysis has led to the written explanations of techniques for each of the sixteen songs in tabular form. The analytical process has informed the synthesis of techniques in the author’s own recorded performances. The submission consists of a portfolio of the author’s own audio and video recordings supported by a dissertation.

Abstract:
Cabin in the Sky was one of Latouche’s first major triumphs, an all-black 1940 musical for which he wrote the lyrics: music by Vernon Duke; book by Lynn Root; choreography by George Balanchine and Katherine Dunham; and sets by Boris Aronson; Ethel Waters and Dooley Wilson starred. The show proved a critical success, applauded for the sophistication of its score and the novelty of its choreography and set design; this included kudos in the black press, even as some progressive white critics took the work to task for perpetuating stereotypes. The show subsequently became a movie directed by Vincente Minnelli, with new music by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, and starring also Lena Horne. This chapter discusses differences between the stage and film versions, and further explores revivals of the stage show over the years, and the work’s continued controversial critical reception.

From 1939 to 1940 Balanchine and Kirstein continued their independent activities. Balanchine and Zorina took on additional projects on the stage and screen, including a film adaptation of On Your Toes, the romantic melodrama I Married an Adventuress, and a new stage musical by Irving Berlin, Louisiana Purchase. Balanchine also created dances for the short-lived revue Keep Off the Grass as well as serving as producer and director of Cabin in the Sky, for which he collaborated with Vernon Duke and choreographer Katherine Dunham and her dance company. Kirstein continued to tour with the company now billed as the American Ballet Caravan, which completed a second transcontinental tour that included the premieres of the ballets City Portrait and Charade. The company secured one final engagement in a ballet called A Thousand Times Neigh, presented at the World’s Fair Pavilion of the Ford Motor Company.

Abstract:
In 1886, after moving to Colorado and marrying Etta Dunbar, Kelso described himself, even as he struggled to get a disability pension for the worsening effects of his wartime injuries, as “one of the happiest of men.” But with news of the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where labor radicals were executed as bomb-throwing terrorists, he plunged into another public crisis. Angrily rethinking some of his core beliefs, he decided that Haymarket had exposed the hopeless rot of the American political and economic system. In his last years, after writing his autobiography, he turned to the story of the nation he had fought and bled for, looking for a better way forward. His last book, Government Analyzed, completed by his wife after his death in 1891, reinterpreted the Civil War and offered a defense of anarchism. His last lectures described Jesus as an anarchistic reformer, hoping for a heaven on earth.

Abstract:
This chapter studies how individuals in the lower Mississippi Valley fashioned identities as men of science. It focuses on the 1790s to the 1810s, an era when several empires and other groups competed for power in the region. Local experts tried to benefit from circulating information among a variety of actual and potential patrons, and, in the process, they manipulated and blurred the boundaries between the United States’ scientific community and those of other polities competing for the borderlands. The chapter includes case studies of the Spanish naturalist and spy Thomas Power, the Scottish planter and astronomer William Dunbar, and the French engineer and slave trader Barthélémy Lafon. Their stories reveal how territorial expansion both added to, and exacerbated deep tensions within, the United States’ scientific community.

Abstract:
On October 8, 2014, Thomas Eric Duncan died in a Dallas hospital from Ebola virus infection. From the moment he was diagnosed with Ebola newspapers all over the country blared the news that the first case of Ebola in the United States had oc¬curred. Blame for his death was immediately assigned to the hospital that cared for him and to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By the end of the month a total of four cases had developed in the United States: two in people— including Duncan— who acquired it in African countries where the disease was epidemic and two in nurses who cared for Duncan. Headlines about Ebola continued to dominate the pages of American newspapers throughout the month, warning of the risk we now faced of this deadly disease. These media reports were frightening and caused some people to wonder if it was safe to send their children to school or ride on public transportation— even if they lived miles from any of the four cases. “There are reports of kids being pulled out of schools and even some school closings,” reported Dean Baker in the Huffington Post. “People in many areas are not going to work and others are driving cars rather than taking mass transit because they fear catching Ebola from fellow passengers. There are also reports of people staying away from stores, restaurants, and other public places.” An elementary school in Maine suspended a teacher because she stayed in a hotel in Dallas that is 9.5 miles away from the hospital where two nurses contracted the virus. As Charles Blow put it in his New York Times column, “We aren’t battling a virus in this country as much as a mania, one whipped up by reactionary politicians and irresponsible media.” It turns out that Thomas Duncan was not the only person who died in the United States on October 8, 2014. If we extrapolate from national annual figures, we can say that on that day almost 7,000 people died in the United States.

Abstract:
In this essay, Marler shows how queer connections and fluid identities served to foster more lasting bonds among the Bloomsberries, making lifelong loving and working partnerships possible where by stricter definitions no such connection could have been made. While the young group of friends may have launched into love triangles experimentally, or as the expected outcome of romantic rivalries, the triangle would often prove to complicate but bolster the original dyads. At a time when sodomy was a felony, primary heterosexual relationships also nicely concealed homosexual relationships. Or the presence of a desirable woman in a triangle sometimes allowed a physical relationship to bloom between a homosexual man (Lytton Strachey or Duncan Grant, say) and a mostly-straight man, such as Ralph Partridge or David Garnett. The Bloomsbury triangle not only rejected Victorian sexual mores but, more radically, placed sexual and celibate love on equal footing.

Abstract:
All of the contributors to this book are clearly in favor of community schools. We would like to see this movement grow rapidly or, as we often say, “go to scale.” This would mean that communities with high needs and low performance would be assisted in transforming their schools. The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) work is one of the streams that have come together to create a new field of full-service community schools. The CAS model has been strengthened by many adaptations throughout the country and overseas. A National Technical Assistance Center for Community Schools has been set up at Intermediate School (IS) 218 with facilities for orientation and training. More than 6,000 policy makers and practitioners from all over the world have taken the tour and observed the rich climate at this pilot school. The concepts of community schools do not necessarily sink in at first encounter; it sometimes takes a while for people to “get it.” The question often arises: Do you really expect the schools to do all of that? It is not well understood that the idea behind the community school movement is for schools to do less, not more! Partners such as CAS come into the building and take responsibility for health, social services, extended hours, and parent and community involvement. However, some school superintendents do get it; Thomas Payzant is a good example (see ch. 15 in this volume). Arne Duncan, head of the Chicago Public Schools, is another strong advocate: “We started with 20 community [school] centers this year [and] we want to add 20 each of the next five years so we will get up to 100 over five years. . . . [T]he Chicago School System cannot do this alone. . . . We have universities, local Boys & Girls Clubs, the YMCA’s, Jane Addams’ Hull House . . . helping to run our program with us.” The quest for appropriate space within schools for the core components is being addressed in large new school building initiatives around the country.

Abstract:
On the morning of June 30, 1908, civilization may have suffered the worst piece of luck in its history. A small cometlike object exploded in the atmosphere above the Tunguska river valley in Siberia. It did little more than scorch and flatten trees for 20 kilometers in all directions and kill a thousand reindeer. However, if that object had struck a heavily populated region, we would not now dwell under any illusion concerning how close to the edge of extinction the human species actually hovers. Because the Tunguska missile missed a populated area, the threat of impact did not really begin to enter the public imagination until after the 1980 announcement of the discovery of the iridium in the K/T boundary layer. Had the Tunguska object struck a large city, a million people or more might have perished, and the phenomenon would have raised everyone’s awareness to the threat of comet impact. Instead, nearly a century later, the threat of comet and asteroid impact is regarded as little more than an interesting anecdote. Very slowly the nature of the threat is being recognized, but only because of the somewhat esoteric discovery that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a major impact 65 million years ago. Such huge collisions are infrequent, perhaps about once every 50 to 100 million years. It is the smaller impacts that pose the greatest danger, and they occur far more frequently. About 800 years ago the South Island of New Zealand suffered widespread fires, which leveled the island and led to the extinction of the Moa bird. Maori legend says that a big explosion in the sky was the cause of the strange fire. Duncan Steel of the University of Adelaide and Peter Snow from Otago in New Zealand have pieced together a fascinating scenario that suggests that the Maori were correct. The fireball created by a comet impact may have ignited the forests of South Island. Near the town of Tapanui in the province of Otago there exists a crater that geologists have been slow to identify as extraterrestrial in origin.
