Abstract:
The focus of this research is on the collaboration relationships of teachers and therapists working in school-based provision for pupils with language and communication disorders. The research is concerned with how the collaboration relationship operates as a power relation for these individuals. There is an attempt to work out something of the effects of changing notions of professionalism in its historical and current versions. The research reveals individuals' identifications with the powerful discourses in this contingent context, manifested in their metaphors and discursive moves. It analyses the complex interaction of discourses and cultural discourses/practices, attempting to grasp the effects of the powerful discourses as individuals construct and re-construct multiple professional and cultural identities and subject positions. In its examination of the political and cultural functioning of the forces of power-knowledge-selves-desire, the research analyses the operation of five dimensions of power at work in these relationships. The analysis subsequently suggests some implications for teacher/therapist co-practice. The research attends to the discourses of inter-professional collaboration in government policy documentation at the macro level, within local authority and school-institution policy statements at the meso level and in the way that participants write and speak of their collaborations at a micro leveL. Macro level discourses were examined in the relevant speech and language therapy and education agencies' policy documentation including Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools (HMI) Report (1996) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) (1996) statement of professional standards. Meso level discourses were sought in the relevant local education authority and school policy documentation. Micro level discourses were explored in instances of individuals' talk about their collaborative practice. Participants' accounts were gathered in semi-structured interviews, audiotaped collaborators' meeting talk and written texts. Individual experiences within specific collaboration relationships have not perhaps been grasped or understood in research into teacher/therapist co-working which draws upon positivist methodology and uses positivist methods. There is much previous research which theorizes collaboration at interagency or interprofessionallevels or that takes a systems theory approach that seeks to generalize norms of 'effectiveness' at either or both of these levels. This research was concerned to explore individuals' experiences of co-practice in an analysis which questioned co-practice norms and attempted to unsettle certainties. Participants' accounts in this analysis suggested a more continuous, fluid process of construction and re-construction of individuals' subject positions characterised by unstable identifications. Analysis of individuals' accounts revealed their subjection to the powerful discourses and their active exploitations of those discourses as resources, their subject positions manifested in their discursive choices, ambivalences, oscilations, evasions and miscalculations. Certain of the ways were uncovered in which multiple, unstable practice and co-practice related discourses interplay and compete, working to produce individuals subject to their power; and providing the discursive resources which individuals deploy as they constitute and reconstitute discourse/practice identity positions in their struggles for domination within their relationships. This analysis suggests certain of the effects of the powerful discourses as the participants constitute and re-constitute acceptable power sharing practices, positions within the dimensions of power which, at times collide with positions acceptable to the other. A number of possibilities for the co-practice of teachers and therapists in school-site provision for pupils with language and communication disorders are identified and discussed. These suggest how school institutions' and agencies' policy makers might attend to the diversity and plurality of teachers' and therapists' discursive resources and co-practices. These also suggest that spaces for the exploration of teacher/therapist discourse/practice differences as these relate to the notion of shared discursive resources and co-practice should be opened-up. These further suggest the need to question current policies and practices using a wider variety of conceptual and analytical tools and the need for shared learning spaces which might promote more personally acceptable practices underpinned by knowledge of each other's aspirations.

Abstract:
This study concerns the decisions and expertise of speech and language therapists (sits) working with preschool children, in particular, the selection and prioritisation of newly referred youngsters for therapy. The literature review covers three aspects: the difficulties of identifying communication disorders in preschool children; the nature of speech & language therapy knowledge; the nature of the selection and prioritisation task. These three aspects provide the theoretical foundations of the study and gave rise to the selection of a multimethod and predominantly qualitative methodology. Using a series of knowledge elicitation tasks, the selection and prioritisation decision was explored. A small group of expert slts participated in semistructured interviews, case history analyses, focus group discussions and card sorting exercises. The results are summarised under three headings: the child, the process and the expertise. The study identifies areas considered significant in the discrimination of priority children. In particular, the co-consideration of the child's communication skills and the supporting communicative context emerged as the key categories. Features within these categories associated with priority and nonpriority children were identified. The process emerged as one whereby sits collected and evaluated baseline descriptions of the child and context. As these findings accumulated, they were judged as to their diagnostic and prognostic significance, as evidence of progress and as potential causes for sit concern. Substantial consensus was demonstrated between sits suggesting that the knowledge elicited emanated from a body of knowledge rather than being idiosyncratic. Even where variation occurred, patterns were evident, reflecting the possible existence of theories-of-action related to differing working contexts. The results are presented as theories-of-action which underpin slts decisions. As such they will be of support to junior sits in their understanding of the selection and prioritisation task and to more experienced slts in making their own decisions explicit.

Abstract:
Information and communication technology (ICT) has created opportunities for students' online interaction in higher education throughout the world. Limited research has been done in this area in Saudi Arabia. This study investigated university students' engagement and perceptions of online collaborative learning using Social Learning Tools (SLTs). In addition, it explored the quality of knowledge construction that occurred in this environment. A mixed methods case study approach was adopted, and the data was gathered from undergraduate students (n=43) who were enrolled in a 15-week course at a Saudi university. The results showed that while the students had positive perceptions towards SLTs and their engagement, data gathered from their work also showed little evidence of high levels of knowledge construction.

Abstract:
Speech and language therapists (SLTs) have expertise in supporting schools in meeting language needs but SLTs are part of the health service. The First Schools Project was developed as a way of collaborative working between a speech and language therapy service and primary schools and for its evaluation Pawson and Tilley’s (1997) model of realistic evaluation (with its principle of explanatory causation) was chosen. This was innovatory use of the model in educational research. Realistic theories were developed in the form of Contexts (possible explanations for Outcomes), Mechanisms (the structures of the First Schools Project e.g. regular school visits) and Outcomes. There were two parts to the inquiry. Part 1 was concerned with identifying regularities (i.e., which Mechanisms of the First Schools Project were occurring with which Outcomes) and a questionnaire with school staff was used. The purpose of Part 2 was to explain those regularities by collecting data that would support, modify or challenge the realistic theories. A version of the realistic interview (Pawson, 2006) was used with stakeholders (parents, teachers and SLTs). Contexts that facilitated the working of the First Schools Project were identified and suggestions are made for future education researchers who choose the model of realistic evaluation.

Ett av skolans viktigaste uppdrag är att lära eleverna att läsa och skriva, vårt samhälles kommunikationssystem litar på att alla har dessa färdigheter. (Lundberg, 2003) På skolorna finns det en mängd olika kartläggningsscheman som ska vara en hjälp för läraren att dokumentera elevernas läsutveckling så att skolsystemet inte missar elever som fastnar i utvecklingen. Ett nytt sådant kartläggningsschema som utvecklas i Älmhults kommun är SLUS, språk- och läsutvecklingsschema. Studiens syfte är dels att belysa utvecklingen av SLUS samt införandet av materialet i en rad kommuner dels att synliggöra hur verksamma pedagoger upplever arbetet med materialet SLUS. Jag använder mig av semistrukturerade intervjuer för att genomföra studien. SLUS är enbart ett kartläggningsschema med det finns ett material, God läsutveckling i praktiken, där det finns uppgifter som väl kan användas tillsammans med schemat för att bedöma barnets kunskaper. Tillsammans är det ett material som används aktivt i både Alvesta och Älmhults kommun och många pedagoger är mycket positiva till materialet.

Scientific and technological development in the XXI century changed a lot of industries. Innovations have not spared the aviation sphere as well, brought air transportation to one of the most demanded, fast, and widespread kinds of transport. Air carriers reacted immediately that demand had increased and began to gain the volume of transportation. However, the better part of significant airports was built in the previous century, and their infrastructure has not been designed for volumes of nowadays traffic. The rapid growth of air transportations led to a shortage of available aircraft parking places, runways, and ground handling resources. Air traffic continued to outstrip available infrastructure, therefore the number of delays grew very fast. Diversions of aircraft to alternate aerodromes have also become more frequent due to the impossibility of staying in the holding areas near the destination airports. The very high amount of ground and air delays coupled with diversions were leading to great losses for both air carriers and airports. Such situation would lead to the opposite effect, decreasing air transportation and slowdown in the development of the whole aviation industry. To avoid traffic congestions due to exceeding of airport capacity were invented airport SLOTs. They have specified allotted time for an aircraft to land or take off at an airport as well as a time limit for aircraft ground handling. Through SLOTs, airport authorities managed traffic volume, dividing it into portions. Uniform continuous traffic has allowed to serve air transportations without extension of airport infrastructure and to avoid constant delays. Usage of airport SLOTs also helped to deal with irregular distribution of frequencies of passenger flights in the big hub airports. Airlines that use the hub and spoke transportation concept have priority SLOTs in their own hub airports for useful transfer flights. At the same time, airlines, which use the point-to-point model, and have a desire to fly to the hub airports, have to revise their schedule to operate flights between rush hours of basic airport carriers. Equal distributions of frequencies give advantages for both airports and passengers. There is no downtime at airports, and passengers can choose more suitable time for a flight. Nowadays, if carriers want to operate any type of flight in a conventional airport, besides permission to land, they would need to obtain airport SLOTs. Airport SLOTs obtaining procedure is not hard but may be very long. There are a lot of factors that can influence it, for example, type of aircraft, kind of operations, operator certificates, etc. All mentioned factors in busy airports make SLOT obtaining procedure unbearably difficult, and it leads to decrease in the attractiveness of the airport for operations.
Науково-технічний розвиток у XXI столітті змінив багато галузей. Інновації не пошкодували і авіаційну сферу, забезпечивши повітряні перевезення одним із найбільш затребуваних, швидких і широко поширених видів транспорту. Авіаперевізники негайно відреагували, що попит зріс і почали нарощувати обсяги перевезень. Однак більша частина значних аеропортів була побудована в попередньому столітті, і їх інфраструктура не була розроблена для обсягів сучасних перевезень. Швидке зростання авіаперевезень призвело до нестачі вільних місць для стоянок літаків, злітно-посадкових смуг та ресурсів наземного обслуговування. Повітряний рух продовжував випереджати наявну інфраструктуру, тому кількість затримок зростала дуже швидко. Перенаправлення літаків на альтернативні аеродроми також почастішало через неможливість перебування в зонах тримання поблизу аеропортів призначення. Дуже висока кількість наземних та повітряних затримок у поєднанні з диверсіями призвела до великих втрат як для авіаперевізників, так і для аеропортів. Така ситуація призвела б до зворотного ефекту, зменшивши авіаперевезення та уповільнення розвитку всієї авіаційної галузі. Щоб уникнути заторів на дорогах через перевищення пропускної здатності аеропорту були винайдені SLOT для аеропорту. Вони вказали відведений час для посадки або зльоту літака в аеропорту, а також обмеження часу на наземне обслуговування. За допомогою SLOT органи аеропорту керували обсягом перевезень, розподіляючи його на частини. Рівномірний безперервний рух дозволив обслуговувати повітряні перевезення без розширення інфраструктури аеропорту та уникати постійних затримок. Використання аеропортних терміналів також допомогло впоратися з нерегулярним розподілом частоти пасажирських рейсів у великих аеропортах. Авіакомпанії, які використовують концепцію перевезення хабів та спиць, мають пріоритетні SLOT у власних аеропортах-хабах для корисних трансферних рейсів. У той же час авіакомпаніям, які використовують модель "точка-точка" і мають бажання літати до аеропортів-хабів, доводиться переглядати свій графік, щоб виконувати рейси між годинами пік основних перевізників аеропортів. Рівний розподіл частот дає переваги як аеропортам, так і пасажирам. В аеропортах немає простоїв, і пасажири можуть вибрати більш підходящий час для польоту. В даний час, якщо перевізники хочуть виконувати будь-який тип польоту в звичайному аеропорту, крім дозволу на посадку, їм потрібно буде отримати SLOT для аеропорту. Процедура отримання слотів в аеропорту не складна, але може бути дуже тривалою. Є багато факторів, які можуть вплинути на це, наприклад, тип літального апарату, вид експлуатації, сертифікати експлуатанта тощо. Всі згадані фактори в зайнятих аеропортах ускладнюють процедуру отримання SLOT і це призводить до зниження привабливості аеропорту для операцій.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of small learning communities (SLCs) and student performance for ninth grade students at Robert E. Lee High School in North East Independent School District (NEISD). For this study, student performance includes achievement on reading and math Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), attendance rates, and number of dropouts. Research included data for years 2002-2003 through 2005-2006 retrieved from the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS). An extensive review of the literature revealed support for implementation of the SLCs model for high school reform. Recent research indicates that student performance will improve if SLCs are fully implemented and supported using a framework, such as Oxley’s five domains for SLCs. The first two questions of this study addressed reading and math TAKS data by ethnic, economically disadvantaged, and special education subpopulations. The third question in this study addressed attendance rates and dropouts. This study found a significant difference in reading TAKS scores for the ethnic subpopulations with the implementation of SLCs. Economically disadvantaged students’ and special education students’ scores also showed significant gains in reading scale scores over the four years of the study. Data from this study revealed that math TAKS scale scores showed a significant increase in the economically disadvantaged and special education subpopulations after implementation of the SLCs. In addition, significance was found in reducing the achievement gap between special education and regular education students on math TAKS. Attendance rates showed no statistical significance after the implementation of the SLCs. An analysis of dropout rates was not possible due to low dropout numbers. The empirical data would not support meaningful analysis. Further investigation is needed to gain a better understanding of the relationship of SLCs on student performance, especially for African American and Hispanic students in math. Additional factors such as degree of implementation and influence of the administrative leadership needs to be explored.

Abstract:
This project aims to evaluate and improve the design of an experimental setup for visualization and experimental verification of the Q-equivalent model.   The Q-equivalent model by Neretnieks (1979) is used (by SKB in Sweden) to assess mass transport of radionuclides from a broken copper canister at a repository for nuclear waste to water seeping in the host rock fractures, and the same model can be used to assess the mass transport of corrosive agents from the water to the canister. To verify and visualize the model an experimental setup has been designed by Neretnieks (KTH). This setup is what this work will evaluate and try to improve.   Experiments were made by determining the aperture in thin slits (150x150mm) made from wavy glass (simulated rock fractures) by filling it and a calibration slit with a dye and measuring the light extinction. Dyes used for the experiments were copper sulphate, carminic acid and uranine. In a second step, dye from a reservoir was allowed to diffuse in to the same slit filled with pure water. It was photographed daily, for about 2-4 months. From this, together with the known aperture the evolution of the concentration can be determined. The diffusion in the same slit is simulated with a finite volume discretization of Fick’s second law in two dimensions. By fitting the simulation results to the experimental results the dyes diffusion coefficient can be determined. It is then compared with values found in literature. Similar experiments with an advective flow where also conducted, with a slit volume of ~9 ml and a flow with a slit residence time of 5.3 days.   The experiments gave varying results for the different dyes used; uranine gave results varying with a factor 2 and carminic acid a factor 10 lower than the expected diffusion coefficients. For the setup with advective flow steady state set after ~16 slit volumes. All dyes displayed some unsuitable properties during the experimental runs.   Results where diffusion coefficients vary with a factor 2 from expected data as obtained for uranine, can be seen as satisfactory if it was not for its unpredictable behaviour during filling. The results of the experiments with carminic acid are not within satisfactory bounds; this can be an effect of dye degradation or possible effect of mass transfer resistance in the filter, which should be further investigated. The setup with advective flow did not give an expected profile, because the dye was able to diffuse in to the setups decompression chambers; if this problem can be reduced the profile should approach the theoretical.   The experimental design has good prospects to visualize and verify the Q-equivalent model if the current issues, such as finding a stable and predictable dye and hindering diffusion in to the decompression chambers, can be eliminated.

Abstract:
This thesis includes the design, production and measurement of a wideband dualpolarized X-band aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna. The wideband and dual-polarized operation is achieved through the use of H-shaped coupling slots. Therefore, the equivalent circuit modeling of a microstrip line fed H-shaped slot is also studied in this thesis. A step-by-step procedure is followed during the design process of the dual-polarized aperture-coupled microstrip antenna. First, an aperture-coupled microstrip antenna with a single rectangular slot, that exhibits a wideband characteristic for single polarization, is designed. Then, the design procedure is repeated for an antenna with H-shaped slot in order to satisfy the same specifications with a shorter slot. Finally, dual-polarized aperture-coupled microstrip antenna is designed. At this configuration, two H-shaped slots are used and they are placed orthogonal to each other. During the design process, the effects of antenna parameters on the input impedance characteristics of the antenna are investigated. These parametric analyses are done in CST Microwave Studio®
. The v designed dual-polarized wideband aperture-coupled microstrip antenna is manufactured. Simulation results and measurement results are compared. During the equivalent circuit modeling of an H-shaped slot fed by a microstrip line, an approach based on the reciprocity theorem is utilized. The method was originally proposed for rectangular shaped slots, in this thesis it is generalized for arbitrarily shaped slots. Software codes are developed in MATLAB to calculate the equivalent impedance of the slot.

The Spoken Language Learning System (SLLS) is intended to be an engaging, educational, and extensible spoken language learning system showcasing the multilingual capabilities of the Spoken Language Systems Group's (SLS) systems. The motivation behind SLLS is to satisfy both the demand for spoken language learning in an increasingly multi-cultural society and the desire for continued development of the multilingual systems at SLS. SLLS is an integration of an Internet presence with augmentations to SLS's Mandarin systems built within the Galaxy architecture, focusing on the situation of an English speaker learning Mandarin. We offer language learners the ability to listen to spoken phrases and simulated conversations online, engage in interactive dynamic conversations over the telephone, and review audio and visual feedback of their conversations. We also provide a wide array of administration and maintenance features online for teachers and administrators to facilitate continued system development and user interaction, such as lesson plan creation, vocabulary management, and a requests forum. User studies have shown that there is an appreciation for the potential of the system and that the core operation is intuitive and entertaining. The studies have also helped to illuminate the vast array of future work necessary to further polish the language learning experience and reduce the administrative burden. The focus of this thesis is the creation of the first iteration of SLLS; we believe we have taken the first step down the long but hopeful path towards helping people speak a foreign language.

Abstract:
Suicide in rural areas has not received significant attention in the research literature to this point, although suicide rates are higher among adults and older adults in rural areas than in urban areas. The aims of the study were as follows: (1) establish the feasibility of assessing suicide ideation and history of suicidal behavior; (2) determine preliminary estimates of the prevalence of suicide ideation, and history of suicide attempts; and (3) examine the effectiveness and acceptability of safety and referral plans for individuals whose responses indicated elevated suicide risk, in rural communities with limited access to referral care. Participants were 96 adults aged 40 to 85 years old (M = 57.34, SD = 11.47) residing in West Texas. Our results indicate that 26% of participants endorsed a lifetime history of suicide ideation and/or suicide attempt(s) and 12.5% reported suicide ideation in the past year. In addition, 93.4% of participants reported that participation in our suicide-focused study was an excellent or good experience. Results suggest that individuals in rural communities are willing to talk about suicide, found the experience helpful, and were satisfied with the referral process.

The characteristics of slotted circular waveguides with different dimensions, including cutoff frequencies of TE and TM modes, impedance and modal field distributions will be analyzed using the generalized spectral domain approach. The Method of Moment will be applied, basis functions that include the edge conditions will be used and a computer program will be developed. Obtained results will be presented for different number, depth and thickness of coupling slots, and compared with available data to demonstrate the accuracy and the efficiency of the approach. Plots of the electric and magnetic field lines corresponding to the dominant as well as a number of higher order modes will be presented for quadruple ridge case.

Abstract:
The screening of wood pulp fibres in aqueous suspension is an important industrial process which involves the passage of "accept" pulp fibres through a perforated or slotted plate, and the retention of larger, coarser fibres on the plate. The influence of fibre, flow, and slot variables on fibre passage was measured in this thesis. These findings were related to the operation of a commercial-scale pressure screen. Also a mechanism of screening was proposed based on fibre trajectories that were observed using high speed cine-photography. This mechanism has two components: 1) a "wall effect" which causes the layer of flow that passes through the slot to be deplete of large fibres, and 2) an "entry effect", which favours the passage of fibres that are short enough and flexible enough to follow the streamlines that turn and pass through the screen plate slot.

I Sverige används idag AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafiks föreskrifter angående sprängningsinducerade vibrationer för underjordsanläggningar. Regelverket baseras på Svensk Standard SS 460 48 66 vilken är framtagen för sprängningsinducerade vibrationer för ovanjordskonstruktioner. Föreskrifterna har anpassats till underjordskonstruktioner vid Hjulstaprojektet då provsprängningar utfördes intill en tunnelbaneanläggning under slutet av 90-talet. Beslut tagna på bristfälliga antaganden kan leda till ett icke optimalt resultat.   Syftet med projektet är att analysera vibrationsmätningar för att försöka ge rekommendationer för uppdatering av AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafiks gällande föreskrifter angående vibrationsalstrande arbeten. Det genom en fallstudie av vibrationsmätningar från drivningen av Citybanan.   Som komplement till fallstudien har en litteraturstudie av idag gällande regelverk och standarder i Sverige samt Norge, Finland, Tyskland och Schweiz gjorts.  Jämförelser mellan standarderna har gjorts för att identifiera potentiella förbättringsmöjligheter som kan tillämpas på de svenska regelverken.   Vågteori i elastiska material och i berg presenteras för att ge bakgrunden till vibrationsmätning och den vanligast använda utrustningen vid vibrationsmätning beskrivs. Tillvägagångssätt för övervakningen av tunnelbanans anläggningar vid Citybanans drivning undersöks samt en beskrivning av metoder för minskad påverkan från sprängningsarbeten.     En fallstudie av sprängningarna vid Citybanan och dess påverkan på AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafiks anläggningar vid T-centralen och Odenplan har genomförts. Genom undersökning av besiktningsprotokoll från sprängbesiktningar och analys av tillhörande vibrationsmätningar har uppkomna skador identifierats samt uppkomsten utretts. I undersökningen inkluderas analys av den maximala svängningshastighetens dominerade frekvens, den högsta energins dominerade frekvens och övertramp av gränsvärdens effekt på skadeuppkomsten.   Slutsatsen av undersökningarna är att en ny faktor bör introduceras i AB Storstockholms lokaltrafiks förskrifter för att vid gränsvärdesberäkning för sprängningsinducerade vibrationer beakta frekvensinverkan. Ett förslag ges för hur en faktor som beaktar frekvensen kan tillämpas, dock har inte fallstudien resulterat i ett entydigt resultat vilket leder till att vidare studier bör utföras för att säkerställa inom vilket freskvensintervall gränserna skall sättas.
Currently in Sweden the predominant regulation used for blasting induced vibrations for underground constructions is AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafiks (SL). The regulations are based on the Swedish standard 460 48 66 which is developed for blasting induced vibrations on aboveground constructions. The regulations were adapted to underground constructions through the research project in Hjulsta, where tests with blasting took place adjacent to a subway depot during the late 1990:s. Decisions based on flawed assumptions could lead to a non-optimized result.   The aim of the project is to analyse the blasting induced vibrations registered during the train tunnel project Citybanan and attempt to give recommendations for updating of the existing SL regulations.   A literature study has been conducted of current regulations in Sweden and compare them to regulations in Norway, Finland, Germany and Switzerland. This in order to investigate the differences between the regulations and identify potential improvement which can be applied to the Swedish regulations. Wave theory in elastic materials and in rock is presented to give the background to vibration measuring. The method used to monitor the vibration levels in the subway during the construction of Citybanan is investigated including a description of methods for reducing the impact of blasting adjacent to existing tunnels.    A study of the blasting operations at Citybanan and its effects on SL tunnels at T-centralen and Odenplan has been conducted. Through investigation of the inspection protocols from the blasting operations and analysis of the corresponding vibration levels and damages identified including the cause has been studied. Included in the investigation is the peak particle velocity, the dominating frequency, the highest energy with corresponding frequency and the violation of established limitations and the correlating damages.   In conclusion to the study a new factor regarding the frequency has been recommended to be introduced into SL regulations for calculating an increased limit for blasting induced vibrations. An example is presented to show how such a factor could be implemented, although further study is needed to ensure that the established frequency intervals are correct.

A crescente preocupação com a qualidade de vida nos centros urbanos aliada ao aumento da densidade demográfica nas regiões próximas de aeroportos tem chamado a atenção das autoridades de aviação civil para a poluição sonora provocada por aeronaves. Nesse contexto, os limites de ruído externo para homologação de aeronaves tornaram-se muito restritivos nos últimos anos, com o claro objetivo de confinar o ruído no interior dos aeroportos. Com a evolução tecnológica dos motores aeronáuticos, diminuir o ruído aerodinâmico gerado por trens de pouso e hipersustentadores tornou-se uma competência fundamental para manter a competitividade da aeronave no requisito ruído. Esse trabalho estuda o mecanismo de geração de ruído aerodinâmico pelo \"slat\" através de simulações numéricas nas seguintes condições de túnel de vento: número de Mach 0,1, número de Reynolds \'Aproximadamente\' 10\'POT.6\' e ângulos de ataque 4°, 6° e 8°. As estimativas de ruído foram comparadas com medições experimentais baseadas da técnica de beamforming, tendo sido observada diferença máxima de 2:5 dB no nível global de ruído. A variação de ruído com o ângulo de ataque foi superestimada em 0:8 dB pelas simulações. O recolamento da camada cisalhante foi identificado através dos contornos de flutuação de pressão na superfície do \"slat\" como a principal fonte de ruído do \"slat\". Para explicar a diminuição do ruído com o aumento do ângulo de ataque foi proposto que as flutuações na camada cisalhante seriam intensificadas através de realimentação de energia dos vórtices capturados pela zona de recirculação na cova. A existência desse mecanismo foi testada comparando os perfis de vorticidade na cúspide e bordo de fuga do \"slat\" e espectros ao longo da trajetória da camada cisalhante para os ângulos de ataque 4° e 8°. Embora o perfil inicial da camada cisalhante seja o mesmo nas duas condições, a esteira no bordo de fuga indica que maior parcela dos vórtices é capturada na condição 4°. Como consequência, as flutuações da camada cisalhante nas proximidades do recolamento são maiores nessa condição, consistente com os maiores níveis de ruído.
The growing concern about the life quality in urban centers coupled with increasing population density in near airports areas has drawn the attention of civil aviation authorities for aircraft noise pollution. In this context, external noise limits for approval of aircraft have become very restrictive in recent years, with the clear objective to confine aircraft noise inside airports. With the technological evolution of aircraft engines, reducing noise generated by aerodynamic landing gear and highlift devices have become a core competency to keep the aircraft competitive regarding noise requirements. This work studies the generation mechanism of aerodynamic noise by slats through numerical simulations in the following wind tunnel conditions: Mach number 0.1, Reynolds number \'Approximately\' 10\'POT.6\' and angles of attack 4°, 6° and 8°. The noise estimates were compared with experimental measurements based on beamforming technique, and it was observed the maximum difference of 2:5 dB in the overall noise level. The noise variation with angle of attack was over-estimated at 0.8 dB by the simulations. The reattachment of the shear layer was identified by the contours of pressure fluctuation on the surface of the slat as the key noise generation mechanism. To explain the noise reduction when the angle of attack is increased it has been proposed that fluctuations in the shear layer would be enhanced through feedback of energy captured by the vortex recirculation zone in the slat cove. The existence of this mechanism was tested by comparing the vorticity profiles at both the cusp and trailing edge, as well as velocity fluctuation spectra along the trajectory of the shear layer for angles of attack 4° and 8 degree. Although the initial profile of the shear layer is the same in both conditions, the wake at the trailing edge indicates that a higher percentage of the vortices is trapped in the recirculation for the condition 4°. Consequently, fluctuations in the shear layer near the reattachment are greater in this condition, which is consistent with the higher noise levels.

This paper considers the allocation of slots for a network of coordinated (congested) airports, where the term “slot” refers to a time on a specific day when a carrier is given permission to use the full range of airport infrastructure for the purpose of landing and take-off at a slot-controlled airport. We take into account the existing IATA rules and guidelines: priorities of requests for slots, the capacity limitations at each airport, the minimal turnaround time between arrival and subsequent departure of the same aircraft, and allocation to series of slots rather than to individual slots. Given the complexity of the problem, we propose an approach that consists of (i) a constructive heuristic procedure to generate a feasible and coherent allocation of slots for each airport from the network, and (ii) an iterative heuristic to improve the quality of an initial feasible solution in terms of the schedule delay (time difference between allocated time slots and airline requests). To evaluate whether the approach would be practical in real operation, we perform tests on a set of generated benchmark instances that span an entire scheduling season. The instances differ by the number of airports in the network and by the distribution of requests among airports from a given network - the largest number of airports forming a network is 100, while the maximum total number of aircraft movements considered on a half-yearly basis exceeds . We provide computational comparisons with solutions obtained when each airport from a network is considered independently (the en-route constraint is ignored). These results reveal that the consideration of the en-route constraint, which ensures a coherent allocation of slots at origin and destination airports, introduces only a minor degradation in the schedule delay and in the number of unaccommodated requests. Furthermore, we investigate the heuristic performance for reduced-capacity scenarios.

Abstract:
Meningen med vårt arbete är att först bringa klarhet i begreppet historiemedvetande, dess historiska framväxt, definition och didaktiska möjligheter. Därefter vill vi undersöka huruvida lärare inom ämnet historia i grundskolan årskurs 4-6 förstår och använder sig av begreppet som ett syfte. Majoriteten av forskningen visar på att det finns likheter i tankegångarna kring hur begreppet ska tolkas. En förenklad förklaring på synen är att dåtid- nutid- och framtidsperspektiv i samspel producerar ett historiemedvetande. Olika forskare fokuserar mer på en eller flera av tidsdimensionerna och lägger större tyngd på dessa i skapandet av historiemedvetandet. Oenigheterna kring begreppet historiemedvetande i forskningen ligger i förklaringsmodellen där allt rör sig i en gråskala utan en exakt definition av svart eller vitt. Det är också här vårt motiv för studien kommer in då vi saknar en förklaringsmodell som är fullständig och inte går att ifrågasätta. Ingångspunkten för arbetet grundar sig i ett sociokulturellt perspektiv, där Vygotskij menar att det är i samspelet mellan individ och grupp som faktisk kunskap produceras. Under samma förutsättningar som individen är en del av sin sociala och kulturella miljö, där interaktion med resten av gruppen skapar kunskap och identitet, så skapas också historien. Metoden som tillämpats i undersökningen av historiemedvetande som fenomen inom grundskolan, kommer ske enligt kvalitativa intervjuer.  Historiemedvetande som begrepp är så pass abstrakt att vikten av ett personligt möte med undersökningsobjektet är av stor magnitud och därför lämpar sig intervjun som undersökningsmetod bäst.

Zymoseptoria tritici est l'un des dix plus importants champignons pathogènes des plantes. Son impact économique sur la production de blé et ses caractéristiques biologiques (dimorphisme levure-hyphae, hémi-biotrophie, populations sexuées et diversifiées) fait de Z. tritici un organisme unique parmi les champignons pathogènes des plantes. Au cours des dix dernières années, il a suscité un intérêt croissant de la communauté scientifique conduisant au développement d'outils génomiques et génétiques. Ces efforts ont permis de mieux comprendre les mécanismes impliqués dans sa pathogénie et son évolution. Nous avons focalisé notre étude sur les trois «Mitogen-Activated Kinases» (MAPK) ZtFus3, ZtHog1 et ZtSlt2 de Z. tritici nécessaires au succès de l’infection. Nous avons réalisé une caractérisation phénotypique détaillée du mutant de délétion ZtSLT2 lors de l'infection du blé et du développement fongique in vitro. Nous avons montré que le mutant ΔZtslt2 est non pathogène pour les feuilles de blé, même lorsque la pénétration stomatique est court-circuitée par injection de spores dans la feuille, ce qui suggère que ce mutant présente un défaut dans la colonisation des tissus de la plante. Pendant la croissance in vitro, ZtSLT2 est nécessaire à la pigmentation, des colonies, l’émergence des hyphes aériens, la formation de biofilm et l’hydrophobicité de la colonie. Ces phénotypes sont des marqueurs d'un processus développemental qui se produit pendant le vieillissement de la colonie de Z. tritici (développement de colonies pigmentées et hydrophobes portant des hyphes aériens blancs). Ce processus développemental survient à des moments différents selon le milieu de culture et la température, le plus rapide étant sur milieu pauvre «Pomme de terre Glucose» (PD) à 25 °C (4 jours) et le plus lent sur milieu riche complet «Extrait de Levure, Peptone, Glucose» (YPD) à 18 °C (18 jours). Nous avons montré que les gènes codant pour des enzymes impliquées dans la biosynthèse de la mélanine, des α-1,3-glucanes et des hydrophobines sont surexprimées au cours de ce processus développemental dans la souche sauvage, en particulier après trois jours de culture sur PD à 25 °C par rapport aux autres conditions. Cette surexpression nécessite que la voie ZtSLT2 soit fonctionnelle. L’analyse transcriptomique (RNAseq) de ces conditions différentielles est en cours pour identifier le réseau de gènes nécessitant la protéine Slt2 pour leur expression. Ces gènes cibles de ZtSLT2 sont des facteurs de pathogénicité putatifs.Nous avons également développé un nouvel outil moléculaire pour Z. tritici. Nous avons montré que les promoteurs pMoNIA1 et pZtNIA1 des gènes codant les nitrates réductases de Magnaporthe oryzae et Z. tritici, respectivement, sont régulés par la source d’azote du milieu de la même façon chez Z. tritici. L’expression de gènes sous le contrôle de ces deux promoteurs est maximale en présence de nitrate comme seule source d'azote, mais réduite en présence de glutamate. Ces promoteurs peuvent donc être utilisés pour l'expression conditionnelle de gènes et le remplacement de promoteur chez Z. tritici. Ils seront utiles pour contrôler l'expression des allèles constitutivement actifs des MAP kinase kinases dans le but d’activer les voies des MAPK de manière conditionnelle
Zymoseptoria tritici is one of the ten more important fungal plant pathogens. Its economic impact on wheat production and its biological characteristics (yeast-fungal dimorphism, hemi-biotrophy, sexual and highly diverse populations) make Z. tritici unique among fungal plant pathogens. It has therefore drawn attention of the scientific community during the last ten years, leading to the development of genomic and genetic tools. These efforts have improved our understanding of its pathogenicity and evolution. We have focused our study on the three Z. tritici Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways (ZtFUS3, ZtHOG1, and ZtSLT2) which are required for pathogenicity. We provided novel insights in the role of ZtSlt2 MAPK signalling pathway using a detailed phenotypic characterization of SLT2 deletion mutant during wheat infection and in vitro development. We showed that SLT2 is non-pathogenic on wheat leaves, even when stomatal penetration is bypassed by spore injection, suggesting a defect in leaf colonisation. During in vitro growth, SLT2 is required for melanisation, aerial hyphae emergence, biofilm formation and colony hydrophobicity which are markers of a developmental switch occurring during Z. tritici colony aging (development of melanised and hydrophobic colonies supporting abundant white aerial hyphae). This developmental switch occurs at different times depending on media and temperatures, quickest being on poor plant-derived Potato Dextrose (PD) medium at 25°C (4 days) and slowest on rich complex Yeast Extract Peptone Dextrose (YPD) medium 18°C (18 days). We provided evidence that genes encoding enzymes involved in both melanin and α-1,3-glucan biosynthesis, and hydrophobins are up-regulated during this developmental switch in wild type, in particular at 3 days on PD at 25°C compared to other conditions. This up-regulation clearly requires a functional ZtSLT2 pathway. Transcriptomic analysis (RNAseq) of these differential conditions is ongoing to identify the network of genes requiring SLT2 for their expression. These SLT2 target genes are putative pathogenicity factors. We also provide a new molecular tool for Z. tritici. We showed that pMoNIA1 and pZtNIA1 promoters from nitrate reductases encoding genes of Magnaporthe oryzae, and Z. tritici, respectively, are nitrogen-responsive in Z. tritici to a similar extent. They are fully expressed in presence of nitrate as sole nitrogen source and down-regulated in presence of glutamate, showing they are suitable for conditional gene expression and promoter replacement in Z. tritici. These promoters will be useful to control the expression of constitutively active alleles of MAP Kinase kinases in order to activate MAPK pathways in a conditional manner

Abstract:
With the manufacture of nano-scale features in the last ten years, it is possible to do optical experiments on features as small as a tenth/hundredth wavelength. It turns out that the experimental data cannot be explained by classical diffraction theories. Thus, it is necessary to develop new methods or use existing approaches which are effective in other fields, to solve problems in photonics. We use finite difference time domain (FDTD), to study transmission properties of sub-wavelength slits in a metallic film. By doing simulations on periodic and single slits, we confirm that the TE mode has a cutoff while a TM mode always has a propagating mode in the small apertures. Then we find that the transmittance is minimum when the array period is equal to the wavelength of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) at normal incidence. In fact, the SPP-like waves exist in both periodic and isolated slits, and they help the transmittance of small apertures. In order to establish the role of SPP in the transmission mechanism, it is necessary to single out each mode from the total fields. We developed Bloch mode method (BMM) to calculate the amplitudes of the lowest N orders, and the amplitudes tell us which one is dominant (not including the guided mode) at high and low transmission. BMM converges very fast and it is more accurate than FDTD since it does not suffer from numerical dispersion. Both methods can resolve the Wood anomaly and SPP anomaly; however, FDTD converges very slowly at the SPP resonance and oscillates around the value obtained through BMM at the Wood anomaly. BMM is not sensitive to material types, incident angles, and anomalies; it will be a useful tool to investigate similar problems.

Results suggested that slots with the lower minimum bets correlated with higher wagers. There was a total of 107 participants actively gambling at two casinos located just outside of Chicago, Illinois. The participant pool was divided between 37 males and 70 females. On average, the participants who played the slot machines with a minimum bet of 30 credits actually bet more than the participants who played the slot machines with a minimum bet of 50 credits. More notably, results from a Chi-square test for significance suggested that there is a significant influence between the minimum bet required to play and the presence, or absence, of “minimizers” and “maximizers” (p <.05). Additional data analyses where also conducted that examined gender’s role and wagering tendencies, including an independent t-test. The main purpose of this paper was to examine minimizing and maximizing gambling behavior across low-value and higher-value machines.

Detta examensarbete syftar till att belysa hur LCC-analyser i dag används vid planeringen av underhållsarbeten i tunnelbanans bergtunnlar. SL är ett aktiebolag som ägs av Stockholms Läns Landsting och ansvarar för den landburna kollektivtrafiken i Stockholms län, vilken inbegriper tunnelbanan. Stockholms tunnelbana invigdes 1950 och har sedan dess byggts ut i etapper. Drygt hälften av sträckningen går i tunnlar. Ett ständigt pågående underhållsarbete av tunnlarna krävs för att säkerställa en god funktion. Ibland är även större underhållsåtgärder nödvändiga, vilka, genom exempelvis avstängning med ersättningstrafik, till större utsträckning påverkar omgivningen. Hur underhållet organiseras och planeras är av stor ekonomisk betydelse och hänger även direkt ihop med anläggningens standard. LCC-analyser resulterar i ett mått på en investerings sammanlagda ekonomiska konsekvenser under dess livstid, inkluderas gör med andra ord bland annat investerings-, drift-, och underhållskostnader. Då detta mått fås för flera alternativ kan en jämförelse av dessa göras och bilda ett beslutsunderlag där det totalekonomiskt mest lönsamma kan väljas, istället för att basera beslutet på enbart den initiala investeringskostnaden. Givetvis måste även andra randvillkor och krav beaktas. Två fallstudier har gjorts för att belysa hur LCC i dagsläget används av SL vid olika typer av underhållsarbeten. I det första fallet har LCC använts för att ta fram beslutsunderlag och i det andra inte alls. Utgångspunkten för examensarbetet har varit att det överlag kan finnas mycket att vinna på att använda LCC inte bara vid nybyggnation utan även vid underhållsarbeten. I dagsläget används LCC-analyser inte konsekvent vid planeringen av underhålls- och reparationsarbeten av SL:s berganläggningar. Inga krav om detta ställs utifrån och SL har inga egna riktlinjer beträffande LCC. Detta kan vara en av orsakerna till att LCC-analyser inte utförs i större utsträckning. Andra kan vara bristande kunskap om metodiken, tidsbrist och delat budgetansvar mellan avdelningar. För att konsekvent införa LCC-analyser vid bergprojektering skulle krav om detta behöva ställas externt eller internt genom en LCC-policy eller reglerande dokument. För att sedan genomföra detta på ett sätt så att alla inblandade förstår nyttan vore information/utbildning av metodiken nödvändigt. Viktigt är att definiera vilka projekt som ska omfattas och när i projektgången LCC ska användas. Förslagsvis kan LCC användas vid behovsanalys och krav om LCC-analyser/LCC-beräkningar kan ställas i förfrågningsunderlag
This thesis aims to highlight how LCC analyses currently are used in the planning of maintenance work in the rock tunnels of the Stockholm Metro. SL is a company owned by Stockholm County Council and is responsible for land-based public transport in Stockholm County, which includes the metro. The Stockholm Metro opened in 1950 and has since been expanded in stages. More than half of the route goes through tunnels. Maintenance of the tunnels is necessary to ensure a good function. Sometimes bigger maintenance actions are required, which at times also affects the surrounding world. How the maintenance is planned and organized is of great economic importance and is also directly connected with the facility's standard. LCC analyses results in a measure of an investment's total economic impact over its lifetime, including investment, operation, and maintenance costs. As this measure is obtained for a number of options, a comparison of these can be made and form a basis for decisions in which the total economically most profitable solution can be selected, instead of basing the decision solely on the initial investment cost. Two case studies have been done to elucidate how LCC is used by SL at different types of maintenance work today. In the first case, an LCC analysis has been used to create a basis for decision making, and in the other case LCC has not been considered at all. The starting point for this thesis has been that there may be much to gain by using LCC analyses not only for new constructions but also in the planning of maintenance work. Today LCC analysis is not consistently used in the planning of maintenance and repair work of SL's rock tunnels. There are no demands on this externally and SL has no own guidelines regarding LCC. This could be one of the reasons that LCC analyses are not practiced in a greater extent. Others may be lack of knowledge of methodology, lack of time and shared financial responsibility between departments. In order to consistently introduce LCC analyses for rock maintenance work it would have to be required externally or internally by an LCC policy or through regulatory documents. The new procedures would have to be implemented in a way so that everyone involved understands the benefits, thus information / education of the methodology would be necessary. It is important to define which projects should be covered by, and in which stages of the projects LCC should be used. As a suggestion LCC analysis could be used to define needs and requirements of LCC-analyses can be set in tender documents.

As a result of a successful human development around the world an extensive urbanization of societies are taking place that are networked in various ways. In these networks, increased travel and digitization are central where individuals and organizations converge in a constant and immediate wireless and mobile technology flow. An example of this is Stockholm and its public transportation company Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). Although most participate in most of the network society, SL is struggling with an audience that seldom travel with them: families with children. We intended to find out how the communication of SL´s digital platforms could get families to travel more with public transportation. The method for this was a survey via e-mail in which families were asked how they experience SL on website, mobile phone and social media. The survey was highlighted with theories and concepts of network society, e-government, convergence and interaction. Results show that families are satisfied with the main content, especially real-time and mobile functions on SL´s digital platforms, but there is a lack of interaction on social media. But whether how SL´s communication on digital platforms can get families to travel more with public transportation, the answer is that it is difficult. The conclusion is that SL must continue improve existing and develop new popular features, and visualize themselves and "make more of and effort" on the website and mobile platform on social media, to hold on to current families travel with public transportation and win the trust of new ones in the long run.
Till följd av människans framgångsrika utveckling sker det runt om i världen en omfattande urbanisering med samhällen som är nätverkade på olika sätt. I dessa nätverkssamhällen är ökat resande och ökad digitalisering centralt med individer och organisationer som sammanstrålar i ett ständigt och omedelbart trådlöst och mobiltekniskt flöde. Ett exempel på detta är Stockholm och Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). Även om dem flesta deltar i det mesta i detta nätverkssamhälle, brottas SL med en målgrupp som reser sällan med dem: barnfamiljer. Vi ämnade att ta reda på hur kommunikationen på SL:s digitala plattformar kunde få barnfamiljer att resa mer kollektivt. Metoden för detta var en enkätundersökning via e-post där drygt barnfamiljer fick svara på hur dem upplever SL på hemsida, i mobiltelefon och på sociala medier. Undersökningen belystes med teorier och koncept om nätverkssamhället, e-förvaltning, konvergens och interaktion. Resultaten visar att barnfamiljer är nöjda med huvudsakligt innehåll, i synnerhet realtids- och mobila funktioner på SL:s digitala plattformar, men det förekommer en bristande interaktion på sociala medier. Men närdet gäller undersökningens syfte om hur SL:s kommunikation på digitala plattformar kan få barnfamiljer att resa mer kollektivt, är svaret att det är svårt. Slutsatsen är att SL ska fortsätta med och förbättra befintliga och utveckla nya populära funktioner samt synliggöra och ”anstränga” sig mer på hemsida och mobil plattform beträffande sociala medier, för att behålla nu kollektivt resande barnfamiljer och vinna fler på sikt.

A tomada de decisão colaborativa (CDM) é um paradigma importante no processo de gerenciamento de tráfego aéreo (ATM). De acordo com a sua filosofia, a troca de informações entre os diversos intervenientes resultam em melhores decisões para o ATM. A construção dos algoritmos de alocação de slots utilizados nos programas de espera em solo (GDP) com CDM não contempla os principais stakeholders atuais no processo de tomada de decisão. Somando-se a esse fato, algumas deficiências no GDP têm sido relatadas em diversas pesquisas ao longo dos anos. Um desses problemas é que o algoritmo Compression nem sempre calcula resultados estáveis na alocação de recursos aeroportuários. Esta situação limita o desempenho do ATM e pode gerar insatisfação entre os stakeholders que são afetados. Para resolver os problemas citados, o presente trabalho propõe uma nova solução para o problema de alocação de slots tratado pelo algoritmo Compression. Esse modelo, denominado DA-SLOT, possibilita o tratamento dos stakeholders já existentes na CDM, bem como, a inclusão de um novo participante, o gestor do aeroporto. O modelo proposto utiliza a teoria de matching para criar um mercado de slots, onde as companhias aéreas e o gestor do aeroporto são jogadores que possuem preferências estratégicas no processo de alocação. O novo algoritmo utilizado nesse processo é baseado no mecanismo Deferred Acceptance (DA) para mercados de matching de dois lados. Os estudos de caso utilizados na validação do modelo empregaram movimentos aéreos do Aeroporto Internacional Tancredo Neves (SBCF) do ano de 2014, extraídos do site on-line da Empresa Brasileira de Infraestrutura Aeroportuária (INFRAERO). A análise realizada sobre cenários hipotéticos e reais indica que o modelo DA-SLOT permite adequado tratamento das preferências de todos os jogadores do mercado através de uma alocação ótima. Além disso, características desejáveis inerentes ao mecanismo DA, como estabilidade nas alocações e controle de manipulação dos resultados, podem levar os jogadores a buscarem resultados ótimos globais no sistema. Estes resultados podem ser considerados como as principais contribuições científicas e sociais da pesquisa.
Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) is an important paradigm in the process of Air Traffic Management (ATM). According to this paradigm, the exchange of information among the different entities result in the improved decisions for ATM. However, the construction of the slot allocation algorithms used in the Ground Delay Program (GDP) with CDM, does not address the current major stakeholders in the decision-making process. At the same time, some shortcomings in GDP have been reported in several studies over the last years. One of these problems is that the Compression algorithm in CDM not always calculates the stable results in the allocation of resources related to airport. These limits of the ATM performance can generate the dissatisfaction among the stakeholders. To solve these problems, this PhD thesis proposes a new solution for the slot allocation problem addressed in the Compression algorithm. This model, called DA-SLOT enables the treatment of existing stakeholders in the CDM, as well as the inclusion of a new participant, the airport management services. The proposed model uses the matching theory to create a market slots where the airlines and the airport managers are the players. These stakeholders in CDM have their strategic preferences in the allocation process. The new algorithm has been developed based on the Deferred Acceptance (DA) mechanism for two-sided matching markets. The case studies are conducted for evaluation the developed model with the real data from Tancredo Neves International Airport (SBCF) of 2014. All the scenarios and data have taken from the official website of the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (INFRAERO). The analysis on hypothetical and actual scenarios indicates that DA-SLOT model allows the correct treatment of the preferences of all players in the market through a stable allocation. In addition, desirable characteristics inherited from the DA mechanism, such as stability in the allocation and control manipulation of the results, may lead stakeholders to get overall performances in the system. These results can be considered as the main scientificand social contributions of this research.

Polyethylene pipes, and other polymeric materials, are a popular choice in the water industry due to their advertised but exaggerated leak resistance. When leaks do occur in this pipe material, the complex leakage behaviour (time and pressure dependent) presents a challenge in accurately modelling the representative response. The presented research aimed to quantify the leak behaviour of longitudinal slits in viscoelastic water distribution pipes, considering the dynamic interaction of hydraulic conditions and the pipe section characteristics. A methodology was developed to create synergy between novel physical investigations and numerical simulations, evaluating the synchronous pressure, leakage, flow-rate and leak area to understand the interdependence of the leakage and structural dynamics. The synchronous leak area was confirmed as the critical parameter defining the leak response and is in turn dependent on the leak and pipe geometry, loading conditions and viscoelastic material properties. The theoretical discharge coeffcient was shown to remain constant, thereby establishing that the structural response, i.e. the change of leak area, can be determined by quantifying the leakage flow-rate and the pressure headalone. Derivation of a generalised leakage model effectively captured the dynamic leakage behaviour. However, the model may provide an erroneous estimate of the true response due to the exclusion of the influence of ground conditions. These were shown to result in a significant increase in slit face loading dependent on the specific soil matrix properties, simultaneously altering the structural deformation and net leakage. Alongside the advances in fundamental understanding, the research also has implications for leakage management strategies. The short term behaviour may severely hinder the effectiveness of leak localisation technologies and the quantification of risk associated with contaminant ingress. However, it was shown that current leakage modelling practice over relatively long time periods are not adversely affected by the existence of such dynamic leaks.

Using the genome database of the phytopathogenic fungus, Alternaria brassicicola, we identified a gene with high homology to the cell wall integrity-associated mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase, Slt2 in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This MAP kinase consists of a predicted 1,251-bp open reading frame, and encodes a 416-amino-acid protein weighing 47501 Da. This homolog was designated AbSlt2 (A. brassicicola Slt2) and gene disruption knockout (KO) mutants were generated in an A. brassicicola wild type background. Several altered phenotypes were found in the mutants compared to the wild type. During growth in various liquid and solid media, the abslt2 mutants displayed slightly aberrant hyphal growth and were unable to develop at the same rate as wild type. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed the abslt2 mutants showed decreased penetration ability, underdeveloped appresoria, and altered morphology on the leaf surface of the host plant, Brassica oleracea (cabbage) when compared to wild type. Abslt2 mutant hyphae exhibited slower growth in planta ultimately resulting in highly reduced virulence. Complementation of the disruption mutant with the wild type gene fully restored pathogenicity. Therefore, AbSlt2 is a new pathogenicity and developmental factor in A. brassicicola.

Induction machines convert more than 55% of electrical energy into various other forms in industrial and domestic environments. Improved performance, especially by reduction of losses in induction machines hence can significantly reduce consumption of electricity. Many design and control methods are adopted to make induction machines work more efficiently, however certain design compromises are inevitable, such as skewing the rotor to improve the magnetic noise and torque characteristics increase the cross current losses considerably in a cage rotor, degrading the efficiency of the motor. Crosscurrent losses are the dominating stray losses which are dependent on several factors among them are percentage skew and the contact resistance between the rotor bars and laminations. It is shown in this thesis that implementing a design change which has non-skewed asymmetrical distribution of rotor slots can serve the same purpose as skewing i.e., reduction of the magnetic noise, thereby avoiding the negative effects of skewing the rotor slots especially by reducing the cross-current losses.

Two design ethodologies to introduce asymmetry in rotor slots are proposed and the key performance characteristics like torque ripple, radial air gap forces are computed both numerically and analytically. Radial forces obtained from the finite element method are coupled to the analytical tool forcalculating the magnetic noise. A spectral method to calculate and separate the radial forces into vibration modes and their respective frequencies is proposed and validated for a standard 4-pole induction motor. The influence of rotor slot number, eccentricity and skew on radial forces and magnetic noise are studied using finite element method in order to understand the vibrational and acoustic behavior of the machine, especially for identifying their sources. The validated methods on standard motors are applied for investigating the asymmetrical rotor slot machines.

Radial air gap forces and magnetic noise spectra are computed for the novel dual and sinusoidal symmetrical rotors and compared with the standard symmetrical rotor. The results obtained showed reduced radial forces and magnetic noise in asymmetrical rotors, both for the eccentric and noneccentric cases. Based on the results obtained some guide lines for designing  asymmetrical rotor slots are established. Magnitudes of the harmful modes of vibration observed in the eccentric rotors, which usually occur in reality, are considerably reduced in asymmetrical rotors showing lower sound intensity levels produced by asymmetrical rotors. The noise level from mode-2 vibration in a 4-pole standard 15 kW motor running with 25% static eccentricity is decreased by about 6 dB, compared to the standard rotors. Hence improved performance can be achieved by removing skew which reduces cross current losses and by employing asymmetrical rotor slots same noise level can be maintained or can be even lowered.

As a result of a growing population, the city of Stockholm is facing many challenges. Getting more people to travel by public transportation is a key factor in coping with this increased urbanization. In the strive for increased ridership, it is the Stockholm Public Transport Administration’s (SL) job to make sure that the services provided are of high quality. One of these services is the real time bus departure predictions provided to the travellers through digital signs or by web and mobile applications. Due to a lack of proper tools, SL has unfortunately not yet been able to establish a systematic assessment of the quality of these bus prediction. The goal of this study was to help SL find such tools and solutions for assessing the quality of bus predictions. More specifically, the purpose of the study was to investigate the concept of prediction quality and identify suitable statistical tools for measuring quality. In order to do this a comprehensive literature study has been conducted. The findings of the literature study were then tested in practice in order to answer how such quality measurements should be made in the context of SL’s ITinfrastructure. This was answered by carrying out a pilot study in which the prediction quality was assessed on data from one week for a specific bus line. From the initial literature study, it was concluded that there are many dimensions that potentially affect the traveller’s perception of bus prediction quality. However, it was also concluded that a quality assessment plausibly should start with an evaluation of the precision. In order to assess the precision, several types of descriptive measures and analytical perspectives were proposed. As of how these findings should be made in the context of SL’s IT-systems, a method for creating observations from the available prediction data was presented. It was also concluded that in order to mirror the travellers experience, the prediction data should be collected “late” in the process of bus prediction generation.

The Spacelift Range infrastructure of the United States Air Force will, over the next decade, experience a major modernization and upgrade. The goal of the Range Standardization and Automation (RSA) Program is to meet the requirements of range users and range safety in a more cost effective manner than is currently possible. One approach that will be considered in best achieving these goals is the further application of GPS technology to both the Eastern and Western Spacelift Ranges. Such an application can have a profound impact on the instrumentation segment of each range. Included within the instrumentation segment and clearly impacted, are both the metric tracking and telemetry subsystems. This paper considers the SLRS requirements that can be supported with GPS technology; the advantages and shortcomings of both GPS technology and alternative techniques; and provides suggestions as to an appropriate application of GPS technology to the SLRS.

Abstract:
This paper performs a corpus-based critical discourse analysis on the terms“vamp”, “slut”, “prude” and “spinster” and how they are used in context fromthe 1920s to the 2000s. They were categorized according to what attitudeswere connected to them, positive, neutral and negative. An interest was alsotaken in what attributive adjectives were used in context with each term. Theresults showed consistent negative attitudes towards “prude” and “spinster”,while the attitudes towards “Vamp” and “slut” were mixed with negative andpositive.
