Abstract:

Abstract:
In light of incidents and concerns regarding the vulnerability of the global positioning system (GPS), the main purpose of the thesis is to look at alternative systems for radio guidance and to put up a serious study on such alternatives with receive and transmit antenna. There is also the need to design such antennas with multiple frequencies to offer robustness in the unlikely event that such adversarial attacks on the GPS happen. The basis on which such alternative antennas are designed is a slotted microstrip. The characteristics of the slot or slots on the microstrip are analyzed by mapping their exact locations on the patch and then noting the resultant center frequencies, the return losses, and the bandwidth. The activities associated with this also focus on the design, fabrication, validation, and characterization of one or more slotted antennas prototypes. The measurement of the antenna prototypes does confirm several frequencies that coexist to see applications, in aeronautical radionavigation, fixed-mobile radionavigation, and radiolocation. The antennas could also feature in a wide-area augmentation system (WAAS), satellite ground link system (SGLS) as well as in surveillance and precision approach radars. Some variations of the antenna are deployed in the areas of law enforcement, surveillance, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Applications of the antenna in an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) are feasible due to its multiple resonant frequencies. Radiolocation and radionavigation antennas have also been known to be mounted in UAVs or on tethered balloons along the borders of the United States to detect low-flying aircraft in support of drug interdiction programs.

Dogan, Doganay. "Dual Polarized Slotted Waveguide Array Antenna." Master's thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613016/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
An X band dual polarized slotted waveguide antenna array is designed with very high polarization purity for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. Horizontally polarized radiators are designed using a novel non-inclined edge wall slots whereas the vertically polarized slots are implemented using broad wall slots opened on baffled single ridge rectangular waveguides. Electromagnetic model based on an infinite array unit cell approach is introduced to characterize the slots used in the array. 20 by 10 element planar array of these slots is manufactured and radiation fields are measured. The measurement results of this array are in very good accordance with the simulation results. The dual polarized antenna possesses a low sidelobe level of -35 dB and is able to scan a sector of ±
35 degrees in elevation. It also has a usable bandwidth of 600 MHz.

Full text
Abstract:
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.,) an invasive, annual grass species, degrades range and pasture lands by out competing and replacing preferred native grass species resulting in economic and ecological losses. Current control strategies are costly and ecological risky. Soil nitrogen depletion by promoting microbial nitrogen utilization by application of a carbohydrate energy source such as sucrose may decrease cheatgrass's competiveness and permit seedling establishment of preferred native species. Review of the literature reveals attempts at restoration of native grasses and elimination of cheatgrass by nitrogen depletion with sucrose applications have failed or at best achieved limited success. We believe one reason for failure is that soil microbes utilize applied simple carbohydrates such as sucrose too rapidly resulting in only short periods of nitrogen depletion, and that application of sugar beet pulp may promote a longer state of nitrogen depletion. We hypothesize the growth of nitrogen dependent invasive grasses will be inhibited by nitrogen deprivation produced by mulch application of coarse granulated sugar beet pulp, and that the inhibition of growth is not related to a passive mulch effect. In a four armed green house study, we compared cheatgrass and bluebunch wheatgrass growth after application of ground sugar beet pulp at rates of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 2.0 and 4.0 tons per acre. As a control, granite chicken grit was similarly applied in equal volumes to rule out a passive mulch effect. At 35 days, there was a negative linear relationship between rate of sugar beet pulp application and cheatgrass growth (p <0.001) and BBW growth (p<0.002). The negative effect of sugar beet pulp on cheatgrass growth was twice the negative effect on blue bunch growth. Granite grit application did not decrease growth of either species. We conclude that sugar beet pulp application depresses cheatgrass growth and that the cause is not a passive mulch effect. Our data indicates that longer duration nitrogen deprivation may aid in promoting restoration of cheatgrass dominated acreages, and treatments such as sugar beet pulp application may permit native grass seedling emergence and establishment.

Cihangir, Aykut. "Radiation Characteristic Analysis Of Tapered Slot Antennas." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612367/index.pdf.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of changes in the physical parameters of tapered slot antennas (TSA) on their radiation characteristics and also to explore the possibility of reconfiguration in the radiation pattern of TSA by switching between two different types of tapering. There are mainly three physical parameters that affect the radiation pattern of TSAs. These are antenna length, aperture width and the ground extension. After designing a wideband microstrip line to slot line transition, the effect of antenna parameter variations on the beamwidth and sidelobe level of the antenna are investigated through the use of a commercially available electromagnetic simulation software HFSS by ANSOFT. The radiation characteristics of constant width slot antennas (CWSA) and linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSA) are compared. It is observed that CWSAs exhibit narrower beamwidth and higher sidelobe level whereas linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSA) have wider beamwidth with lower sidelobe level compared to each other. A novel switching architecture between CWSA and LTSA is proposed to obtain a reconfigurable antenna.

Abstract:
“Slowly Rushing Absent Mind” explores themes of origin and nature through poems about family history and the natural world. This collection explains poetry through poetry by using different forms—the ghazal, the prose poem, the sonnet and the lyric, to convey an awareness of a deeper consciousness. These poems seek to fill the space in the air above your shoulder at which the retail clerk stares as he hands you your change and wishes you good day. “The world we know,” Foucault explains, “is a profusion of entangled events;” these poems are meant to hint at a true beginning, one at which only the most exhaustive of genealogical research could possibly arrive, yet one that is intrinsic in the details of everyday life.

Abstract:
An interacting particle system is constructed in which a collection of independent Brownian motions are subject to the rule that each pair of particles shall coalesce at a rate given formally by ). dLt , where {Lt : t ~ O} is the intersection local time of the pair. This interaction mechanism is referred to as slowly-coalescing, in contrast to the more standard model in which particles coalesce immediately on collision. The process is shown to be the weak limit of a sequence of coalescing symmeteric random walks on the lattice n-1Z. Our indirect argument exploits the existence of a dual Markov process at both the discrete and the continuous level. By endowing each of the slowly-coalescing Brownian particles with a weight we are able to establish a more intimate duality, the dual process being the solution of a stochastic heat equation driven by Fisher-Wright noise.

Scullion, Mark Gerard. "Slotted photonic crystal biosensors." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3405.

Full text
Abstract:
Optical biosensors are increasingly being considered for lab-on-a-chip applications due to their benefits such as small size, biocompatibility, passive behaviour and lack of the need for fluorescent labels. The light guiding mechanisms used by many of them result in poor overlap of the optical field with the target molecules, reducing the maximum sensitivity achievable. This thesis presents a new platform for optical biosensors, namely slotted photonic crystals, which engender higher sensitivities due to their ability to confine, spatially and temporally, the peak of optical mode within the analyte itself. Loss measurements showed values comparable to standard photonic crystals, confirming their ability to be used in real devices. A novel resonant coupler was designed, simulated, and experimentally tested, and was found to perform better than other solutions within the literature. Combining with cavities, microfluidics and biological functionalization allowed proof-of-principle demonstrations of protein binding to be carried out. High sensitivities were observed in smaller structures than most competing devices in the literature. Initial tests with cellular material for real applications was also performed, and shown to be of promise. In addition, groundwork to make an integrated device that includes the spectrometer function was also carried out showing that slotted photonic crystals themselves can be used for on-chip wavelength specific filtering and spectroscopy, whilst gas-free microvalves for automation were also developed. This body of work presents slotted photonic crystals as a realistic platform for complete on-chip biosensing; addressing key design, performance and application issues, whilst also opening up exciting new ideas for future study.

In my Bachelor’s project I have attempted to explore and develop my relationship with the amorphous concept that is ”style”. As an illustrator I am sometimes torn between the idea of having a single recognizable style or to be experimental and to use aesthetics as a tool rather than a signifier of a personal brand.  The project takes the form of an anthology of weird fiction stories, where each of the eight stories are illustrated in different ways and with different materials. I have choses weird fiction as a subject not only because of personal interest but also because of the specific qualities of the genre. Weird fiction deals in uncertainties and mood, with a huge emphasis on how things are told, not what is told. In this project I have attempted to transfer some of these qualities to my illustration practice. Letting the contents of the image take the backseat to how it is drawn. Both as a method for producing the anthology but also to develop as an illustrator overall.

Abstract:
Laser cleaning is a non contact, highly controllable process for the removal of contaminants from a surface with minimum or no damage to the substrate material. Laser cleaning has been applied mainly on flat and curved surfaces. Little is known on the phenomena and feasibility of laser cleaning of slotted structures. Slots are common structures in engineering, and can be found in many components. In this PhD work, the feasibility of laser cleaning of alpha case on flat titanium alloy surfaces was initially explored, and then an investigation was made on the use of a pulsed laser for the cleaning of micro to macro slots in silicon and metallic materials. The effects of laser processing parameters on the contaminant removal from these slots were experimentally studied. Laser cleaning thresholds and cleanliness was examined. Meanwhile, finite element modelling (FEM) and time domain finite difference modelling techniques were used to simulate the processes involved to aid the understanding of the technique for process optimisation. The experiments were undertaken to verify if such models are able to accurately predict the cleaning thresholds. The surface and sub-surface characteristics before and after laser cleaning were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It has been shown that the slot structure and its material properties were not damaged or changed by laser cleaning process. A novel contribution is that surface morphology after the laser ablation could be used as a diagnostic method to indentify the presence of alpha case and measure its thickness due to the specific characteristics of the surface roughness and generated cracks on the ablated surface after laser irradiation. Besides, it has been found that an axial beam which propagates into the narrow slots can successfully clean the tiny particles on the slot sidewalls whose width ranges from 3.5 mm to 13mm. These phenomena had never been reported before.

Larsson, Martin. "Road Slope Estimation." Thesis, Linköping University, Automatic Control, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-53884.

Full text
Abstract:

Knowledge about the current road slope can improve several applications in a heavy-duty vehicle such as predictive cruise control and automated gearbox control. In this thesis the possibility of estimating the road slope based on signals from a vehicles air suspension system has been studied. More specifically, the measurement consists of a pressure signal measuring the axle load, and a vertical distance sensor.

A variety of suspension systems can be mounted on a Scania truck. During this thesis, two discrete-time models based on two different rear axle air suspension systems have been proposed. The models use the effect of alternating axle load during a change in the road slope and the estimates are computed using an extended Kalman filter.

The first model is based on a rear axle suspension known as the 2-bellow system. This type of suspension is strongly affected by the driveshaft torque, which results in a behaviour where the rear end is pushed upwards and thus decreasing the rear axle load during uphill driving. A model was developed in order to compensate for this behaviour. Unfortunately, the estimates showed less promising results and all attempts to determine the error was unsuccessful.

The latter model is based on the 4-bellow system. This suspension system is not affected by the driveshaft torque and a less complex model could be derived. The experimental results indicated that road slope estimation was possible and with a fairly accurate result. However, more work is needed since the estimate is affected by road surface irregularities and since the algorithm requires knowledge about the vehicles mass and the location of the centre of gravity.

All the presented results have been estimated based on real data from a test track at Scania Technical Centre in Södertälje.

Abstract:

In this paper, a novel dual-polarized highly-folded self-grounded Bowtie antenna that is excited through I-shaped slots is proposed for applications in sub-6GHz 5G multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems. The antenna consists of two pairs of folded radiation petals whose base is embedded in a double layer of FR-4 substrate with a common ground-plane which is sandwiched between the two substrate layers. The ground-plane is defected with two I-shaped slots located under the radiation elements. Each pair of radiation elements are excited through a microstrip line on the top layer with RF signal that is 180° out of phase with respect to each other. The RF signal is coupled to the pair of feedlines on the top layer through the I-shaped slots from the two microstrip feedlines on the underside of the second substrate. The proposed feed mechanism gets rid of the otherwise bulky balun. The Bowtie antenna is a compact solution with dimensions of 32×32×33.8 mm3. Measured results have verified that the antenna operates over a frequency range of 3.1–5 GHz and exhibits an average gain and antenna efficiency in the vertical and horizontal polarizations of 7.5 dBi and 82.6%, respectively.

Bromley, Alan J. "Slotted and circular pore surface microfiltration." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2002. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/13634.

Full text
Abstract:
The work described by this thesis is a comparison of pore opening geometry for true surface microfilters. True surface microfilters can be thought of as very fine sieves, with pore sizes less than 10 microns. All other types of so-called microfiltration membranes do not rely on sieving, but obtain their pore retention rating by particle collection mechanisms similar to depth filters. Particle deposition within such microfilters results in permeate flow rate dechne, for a fixed pressure filtration, or pressure drop rise, for a fixed rate filtration. The true surface microfilter pore geometnes considered were circular and slotted, and microfilters with filtering dimension of less than 10 microns were used. The slotted pore microfilters are not commercially available and had to be made in the laboratory as part of this study. The technique used was to plate nickel onto an existing substrate, thereby reducing the pore dimension until It was within the microfiltration range. The plating was by electroless nickel solution and not by galvanic means. Significant development of the electroless platmg technique led ultimately to the successful manufacture of process scale slotted surface microfilters.

Alhuwaimel, Saad. "Fully polarimetric slotted waveguide antenna array." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10041045/.

Full text
Abstract:
Multistatic radar system provides a great number of advantages over monostatic radar systems via exploitation of geometrical diversity which gives the ability to view targets from multiple perspectives. These advantages include target signature enhancement, improved detection, higher immunity against countermeasures and provide more information about targets and hence enhance targets classification. Furthermore, the passive receive-only nodes are more compact, hence lighter weight, and can be mounted on UAV which leads to a great advantage to surveillance systems and military applications. Over the last two decades, University College London and the University of Cape Town have collaborated to develop multistatic radar systems. This collaboration resulted in developing an S-band system (NetRAD). Recently, a new version of the system (NeXtRAD) that operates in X and L bands has been developed. The NeXtRAD system has two channels at X-band which allows for receiving fully polarimetric data from clutter and targets utilising dual-polarised antenna. The first addressed task of this work was to investigate all possible antenna candidates to be used for the NeXtRAD system. Resonant SWGAA was chosen among the antenna options as it fit best all desired criteria and due to its relative design simplicity, high power-handling capabilities and cost-effective fabrication. The SWGAA can be designed to be a dual-polarised antenna. The procedures for designing a low sidelobe level (SLL) S-band SWGAA are demonstrated in this work. The azimuth beamwidth of a SWGAA is controlled by the number of slots carved in a waveguide. Eight slots distributed around the centre-line of waveguide broad wall found to meet the desired beamwidth. Four SWGAAs were designed and fabricated. The anechoic chamber measurements of each SWGAA showed excellent agreement with the simulation results. A single element SWGAA has a fan elevation beamwidth. This beamwidth has to be narrowed to achieve the desired width. Stacking identically designed SWGAAs was found to be an effective and simple method to narrow the antenna elevation beamwidth. The four SWGAAs were stacked on top of each other. The mitigation of mutual coupling between stacked SWGAAs was investigated. A cost-effective method of inserting dielectric sheets between stacked SWGAAs helped in mitigating the mutual coupling and assist in arriving at the desired antenna performance. The stacked SWGAAs shows a very good performance with very low SLL and high polarisation purity (low cross-polarisation level). The stacked SWGAAs antenna performance was validated in field experiments and compared to similar characteristics antenna. The SWGAA shows better performance compared to the other antenna. A new simple and efficient design of a dual-polarised SWGAA by having two similar set of stacked waveguides with one set rotated by 90ᵒ relative to the other one was proposed. Two designs with two different elevation beamwidths were simulated. Both designs showed excellent performance that met all the desired criteria. The same designs and tests procedures were followed in designing and testing the X-band SWGAA and simulating dual-polarised antennas. No field experiments were performed using this antenna as the NeXtRAD system is based at UCT and no access to any other X-band radar system at UCL.

Abstract:
A half of a brick is still a brick. Half a brick is a block. A building block, it is a thing of construction. Repeated, it makes a wall. Unnoticed, it is a stumbling block. It is mobile. When lobbed, it brings the construction down. This research draws on legacies of minimalism, as exemplified in processes of isolation and the repetition of a singular unit – but it is not reductive. Literal theatricality is embraced and ramped up in the drafting of stage directions, and lighting and effects plots embedded as a part of picture making. As with theatrical scripts, a looped feedback of proposition and account is employed and items are expelled and accumulate around the questions: ‘What is the record?’ ‘What is the thing?’ Within this recursive process motifs appear. Each form, whether it be half a brick, a choral ode, a riddle, a monogram or a rolled butterfly collar, expands on the materiality and mechanisms of the thing itself. The approach is to creep up on it: a form of research by stealth.

Chandarana, Upasna Piyush, and Upasna Piyush Chandarana. "Optimizing Geotechnical Risk Management Analysis." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625550.

Full text
Abstract:
Mines have an inherent risk of geotechnical failure in both rock excavations and tailings storage facilities. Geotechnical failure occurs when there is a combination of exceptionally large forces acting on a structure and/or low material strength resulting in the structure not withstanding a designed service load. The excavation of rocks can cause unintended rock mass movements. If the movement is monitored promptly, accidents, loss of ore reserves and equipment, loss of lives, and closure of the mine can be prevented. Mining companies routinely use deformation monitoring to manage the geotechnical risk associated with the mining process. The aim of this dissertation is to review the geotechnical risk management process to optimize the geotechnical risk management analysis. In order to perform a proper analysis of slope instability, understanding the importance as well as the limitations of any monitoring system is crucial. Due to the potential threat associated with slope stability, it has become the top priority in all risk management programs to predict the time of slope failure. Datasets from monitoring systems are used to perform slope failure analysis. Innovations in slope monitoring equipment in the recent years have made it possible to scan a broad rock face in a short period with sub-millimetric accuracy. Instruments like Slope Stability Radars (SSR) provide the quantitative data that is commonly used to perform risk management analysis. However, it is challenging to find a method that can provide an accurate time of failure predictions. Many studies in the recent past have attempted to predict the time of slope failure using the Inverse Velocity (IV) method, and to analyze the probability of a failure with the fuzzy neural networks. Various method investigated in this dissertation include: Minimum Inverse Velocity (MIV), Maximum Velocity (MV), Log Velocity (LV), Log Inverse Velocity (LIV), Spline Regression (SR) and Machine Learning (ML). Based on the results of these studies, the ML method has the highest rate of success in predicting the time of slope failures. The predictions provided by the ML showed ~86% improvement in the results in comparison to the traditional IV method and ~72% improvement when compared with the MIV method. The MIV method also performed well with ~75% improvement in the results in comparison to the traditional IV method. Overall, both the new proposed methods, ML and MIV, outperformed the traditional inverse velocity technique used for predicting slope failure.

Abstract:
In this research, extensive use has been made of limit equilibrium methods of analysis for studying the stability of slopes. For the determination of the factor of safety (FOS) of slopes, the usual two-step process has been adopted; (a) assuming a slip surface for the soil mass, and (b) using the appropriate limit equilibrium equation(s). Eight wellknown limit equilibrium methods have been programmed to calculate different FOS values. The comparative performance of the various analyses has been carried out successfully using case studies. The innovative use of Gauss quadrature to calculate the FOS values has been shown to reducet he iterative sequencesd ramatically with no loss of accuracy. A visco-plastic flow model has been proposed to estimate lateral forces on piles used for slope stabilisation. The present research data occupies an "in-between" position to the previously reported values, with the variation trend being confirmed satisfactorily in all cases. Slope stabilisation due to the presence of a row of piles has been investigated using two distinct lateral load estimations. These include theories of plastic deformation and the proposed visco-plastic flow which are modelled and implemented in a computer program. Eight well-known methods of slope stability analyses have been adopted and computer coded to re-calculate FOS values for a slope reinforced by a row of piles. A Finite Element computer program has been developed to evaluate the displacement, bending moment and shear force along the pile axis. The pile is analysed at two levels above and below the slip failure surface.

Abstract:
Tailings (mining waste) disposal is a significant consideration for the mining industry, with the majority of the ore processed in most mining operations ending up as tailings. This creates large volumes of tailings, which must be handled and stored responsibly to avoid potential environmental catastrophes. The most common form of tailings storage facility is the impoundment, where tailings are contained within a basin, with beaches forming around the perimeter of the impoundment and a pond standing in the middle. A relatively new method of tailings storage is to create a 'stack', whereby the tailings solids form a large heap, with the discharge of tailings slurry from the apex of the heap. It is of significant value for mine operators and tailings engineers to be able to predict the shape of the beach that forms in either of these disposal scenarios. The key to being able to do this relies on a method of prediction of the beach slope. The aim of this work is to develop a method of tailings beach slope prediction for tailings slurries that are sub-aerially discharged from a pipe. In this thesis a literature review is undertaken, investigating existing methods for the prediction of tailings beach slopes. These methods are validated against relevant industrial and experimental data. Two separate phases of experimental work have taken place in an effort to investigate tailings deposition behaviour, one at mine sites and the other in a laboratory on a small scale. Three new tailings beach slope prediction models are presented; a simple empirical model enabling quick approximate predictions; an a priori tailings beach slope prediction model based on existing theories of open channel flow, sediment transport and rheology, which is more powerful due to the greater degree of theory in its foundation; and a new semi-empirical model that shares some of the theoretical aspects of the a priori model but offers better predictions due to its empirical calibration to the experimental data. The experimental results, along with 3 other independently collected sets of relevant industrial and experimental data, are used to validate the beach slope prediction models found in the literature, as well as the new beach slope models presented in this thesis. Statistical evaluation of the performance of all of these models is presented to enable comparison. Finally, a new beach shape model is presented for the three dimensional geometric forecasting of the beach surface of a tailings stack. Historic tailings discharge data is run through the beach shape model, and the shapes predicted by the model are compared with aerial survey data of a real tailings stack for validation of the shape model. This work not only presents a new method of tailings stack shape prediction, but also a plausible theory for explaining the concavity of tailings beaches. The stack shape model also has the potential to be developed further for the three dimensional modelling of tailings beaches formed in other types of storage facilities, such as impoundments or valleys.

This study looks upon the castles in Sweden that have transformed from private residence to running a hotel business on the premises. The focus of the study lies in the differences and similarities of the segmentation and marketing aspects of the hotel business of the castles compared between the different counties where they are located. Conducting interviews based on a questionnaire the scientist was able to get responses from 22 castles operating with as hotels out of a total number of 28 such castles in Sweden. The study shows that the seasonal changes in bookings vary both with the type of customer segmentation the castles have chosen and the geographical location of the castles. The main seasonal changes for the majority of the castles fall in line with the hotel business as a whole in Sweden.

Abstract:
In this essay I will defend Nel Noddings care ethics by arguing against Michael Slotes critique of it, while also presenting critique of Slotes virtue ethical version of care ethics. The essential difference between the theories is in my opinion that Noddings theory gives relations so-called ontological priority. I will be arguing that the relational ontology vies better guidance in care situations, but it is also preferrable as an metaethical fundament. I will do this by presenting a situation where Slotes virtue ethics judges an act as caring, even though that’s not necessarily the case. I will then argue that Noddings care ethics demands a more amplie picture of the situation and therefore also gives better guidance, which I argue is valid generally in moral practice. In this essay I will also present arguments against Slote by bringing to light how the feasability of his arguments and theory presupposes a so-called individualistic ontologi (unlike Noddings relational ontology). A relational ontology presupposes a relation between two (or more) individuals in a situation, while the individualistic doesn’t consider that fact. The relational ontology is important for most of care ethics advocates, which is why I contend that Noddings theory is to prefer ahead of Slotes theory. Therefore I argue for using the relational ontology also as a metaethical foundation.

Full text
Abstract:
Failure mechanisms in large scale open pit slopes are more complex than could be considered through conventional slope design methods. Pit slope behaviour must be predicted accurately, because for very deep open pits, a small change of slope angle can have serious technical and economic consequences. Failure of hard rock slopes often involves both failure along naturally existing weakness planes and failure of intact rock. Without an advanced understanding of combined rock slope failure mechanisms, the validity of commonly applied methods of large scale slope analysis is questionable. The problem was investigated by means of a toolbox approach, in which a wide range of slope stability analysis methods were used and compared to address specific problems arising during slope design optimisation of the Cadia Hill Open Pit, NSW. In particular, numerical modelling is an advanced tool to obtain insight into potential failure mechanisms and to assist the slope design process. The distinct element method was employed to simulate complex rock slope failure, including fracture extension, progressive step-path failure and brittle failure propagation, which were previously often considered unimportant or too difficult to model. A new, failure-scale-dependent concept for the categorisation of slope failures with six categories ranging from 0 (stable) to 5 (overall slope failure) was suggested to assist risk-based slope design. Parametric slope modelling was conducted to determine the interrelationship between proposed categories and critical slope/discontinuity parameters. Initiation and progression of complex slope failure were simulated and described, which resulted in an advanced understanding of combined slope failure mechanisms and the important role of rock bridges in large scale slope stability. A graphical presentation of the suggested slope failure categories demonstrated their interrelationship to varied slope/discontinuity parameters. Although large scale slope analyses will always involve data-limited systems, this investigation shows that comprehensive, conceptual modelling of slope failure mechanisms can deliver a significantly improved insight into slope behaviour, so that associated slope failure risks can be judged with more confidence. The consideration of combined slope failure mechanisms in the analysis of large scale open pit slopes is essential if slope behaviour is to be realistically modelled.

Abstract:
Migrating freshwater fish population has been significantly declined, mostly by the obstruction of their migratory routes by hydropower dams. To diminish such impacts, fish ladders have been developed to facilitate the passage of migrating fish. However, fish ladders are associated with mortality and migratory failure, resulting in an ecological problem which has been a concern for years. The paper contained in the following pages focuses on studying the viability of an innovative modular design for a fish ladder developed by Fiskvägsteknik AB. The design is based in a vertical slot fishway (VSF) to which some roughness elements are attached to modify the flow. The aim of this bypass system is to restore the original biological continuity and diversity in the Swedish rivers, therefore solving a long-lasting ecological problem that hydroelectric production has caused over the years. Through a computational analysis, the flow has been evaluated as a function of the parameters that present an influence over its behaviour. First, a study of the changes in flow velocity influenced by four different slopes: 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 %, has been performed with the objective to find an appropriate inclination according to the capabilities of the fish species considered. The lowest slopes have resulted to be the most appropriate ones, coinciding with low values of turbulent kinetic energy and lower flow velocities. The second step has been checking the effect of roughness elements on the bottom part of the structure tilted a 5%. The flow velocity has shown a considerable decrease, falling in the range of the fish swimming capabilities established. As for the streamlines of the flow, they were altered compared to the cases without the roughness elements.

Abstract:
The formalism developed by Hartle is used to set up the fieldequations of slowly and rigidly rotating stars valid to secondorder in the rotation parameter. These equations are then solvedin the exterior vacuum region. In the interior region the fieldequations cannot be solved analytically and an expansion tosecond order in the weak-gravity limit is instead made.   The quadrupole moment of the vacuum metric is then calcu-lated. This will depend on a constant that is determined in thematching procedure, which means that it is dependent on theinterior of the star.   The quadrupole moment is found to deviate from that of theKerr metric in the weak-gravity limit.

Englyst, K. "Rapidly and slowly available glucose in foods." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.598852.

Full text
Abstract:
Both the amount and source of dietary carbohydrates have important physiological roles in human health and disease. However, characterisations based solely on chemical attributes do not adequately describe the physiologic fate of carbohydrates. The glycemic index (GI) has been proposed as a measure of carbohydrate quality, but does not necessarily distinguish between different types of low GI foods that have different nutritional properties. There is a need to establish a better description of the physiological attributes of carbohydrates, which is the main focus of this thesis. This thesis describes a physicochemical characterisation of carbohydrates based on their chemical composition and likely gastrointestinal fate. Modifications were made to existing methodology for the measurement of rapidly (RAG) and slowly (SAG) available glucose, and resistant starch. Using this method, with improved precision and quality control, a database of physicochemical carbohydrate fraction profiles for 189 foods was established. The content of the SAG fraction, a marker of slow release carbohydrates, ranged from <5% in potatoes, bakery products and breakfast cereals to >35% in some legumes, pasta and whole kernel cereals. The superiority of the RAG and SAG measures over conventional carbohydrate classification schemes in explaining glycemic responses was demonstrated in two studies. In one study (n = 23 cereal products) the RAGS:SAG model explained 69% of the variation in GI values for a selection of cereal products, which was considerably greater than other models (e.g. 34% for the starch and sugar model). The other study, incorporating two carbohydrate portion sizes, found that the RAG fraction explained 70% of the within subject variation in the glycemic responses to test meals, significantly greater than the 42% explained by the total carbohydrate intake. This study also demonstrated that the magnitude of the glycemic response was largely determined by RAG intake, rather than SAG intake which had a minimal effect. It appears that SAG is a marker of slow release carbohydrates that do not elevate the glycemic potential of foods. An epidemiological study (n=684) was used to establish the intake of the physicochemical carbohydrate fractions: RAG, 62%; SAG, 4%; RS, 2%; fructose, 21%; other (mainly lactose), 11%. Although the average intake of SAG was small, it had a 13 fold intake range (1.5-19.5g/day) indicating that it could be utilised in identifying dietary patterns. Indeed, it was shown that the physiochemical carbohydrate fractions were significant determinants of dietary GI and glycemic load values. The initial investigation of relationships with metabolic markers for disease risk found that correlations were generally poor, both for the physicochemical carbohydrate fractions and for other nutrients with previously established associations. An extended study adjusting for confounding factors is warranted. In conclusion, the RAG and SAG measures provide a new perspective on the physiological role of carbohydrates, which can be applied to metabolic and epidemiological studies investigating the complex role of carbohydrate quality in nutrition.

Todorovic, Fabro Adriano. "Propagation in waveguides with slowly changing variability." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2014. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/363111/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates structural wave propagation in waveguides with randomly varying material and geometrical properties along the axis of propagation, specifically when the properties vary slowly enough such that there is no or negligible backscattering due to any changes in the propagation medium. This variability plays a significant role in the so called mid-frequency region, but wave-based methods are typically only applicable to homogeneous and uniform waveguides. An analytical tool, the WKB (after Wentzel, Kramers and Brillouin) approximation, is used in order to find a suitable generalisation of the wave solutions for finite waveguides undergoing longitudinal and flexural motion. An alternative wave formulation approximation with piecewise constant properties is derived so that the internal reflections are taken into account, requiring a discretisation of the waveguide. In addition, a Finite Element approximation using an enriched hierarchical basis or Hierarchical Finite Element (HFE) is created, where the variability in the properties of the waveguide is included within the element formulation, thus not requiring a mesh discretisation as opposed to a standard FE solution. A Fourier like series, the Karhunen-Loeve expansion, is used to represent homogeneous and spatially correlated randomness and statistics of the natural frequencies and forced response are derived. Experimental validation is carried out, using firstly a cantilever beam with small masses attached along its length according to a given random field. In the second experiment, an ensemble of glass-fibre reinforced free-free beams, whose variability is characterised by light transmissibility images, is measured. It has been found that the correlation length of the random fields or the scale of the spatial fluctuation is shown to play an important role in the dynamic response statistics. Moreover, the proposed formulations show good agreement with the standard approaches but at a fraction of the computational cost, providing a good framework for uncertainty quantification.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the restricted morphology and distribution of sloths today, fossils sloths show a wide variety of forms and behaviors and used to range from South America to Alaska. These extinct forms have in the past simply been lumped together as "ground sloths", separated from modern "tree sloths". However there are intermediate forms that have been posited to be semi-arboreal. In other groups such as primates the shape of the shoulder blade has been shown to vary significantly between groups with different arboreal behaviors. This study used geometric morphometrics to examine the scapulae of modern and extinct sloths to show that these three locomotor groups can in fact be distinguished by their shoulder blade shape. Juveniles of giant ground sloths also have significantly different shoulder blade shapes than the much larger adults, however they do not overlap with the smaller intermediate sloths, so may have been just as terrestrial as their parents despite their much smaller size. Finally, ontogenetic trajectories of several sloth genera do not show evidence of having different slopes. They start and end in different areas of morhospace but are all on parallel paths. This argues against the hypothesis of convergence in modern tree sloths, which despite both having an unusual suspensory lifestyle are not closely related. Rather they are both retaining an ancestral growth trajectory that all sloths have possessed.

Research into how one can create architecture that will last beyond the foreseeable future. Part ONE is research based, building up a manifesto based on; structural integrity, aesthetic longevity, programmatic adaptability and cultural relevance. The research is based on observing historical architecture from the past 2,000 years, both looking into how the buildings have stood the test of time physically, but also why they might remain attractive, analysing the comings and goings of beauty through time. The research is compiled and represented through suggested ideal ways of designing each of the architectural elements, such as the wall, window, door, threshold or stair. Part TWO applies the research to a case study; the extension and renovation of the Royal Palace in Stockholm, in order to turn the residence into a public building, with the extension functioning as a connection point between the city landscape and the palace beyond. The design has no specific programme other than allowing the palace complex to be used by the public, as they wish, for the future to come. A large part of the design is essentially made up of sculptural urban landscaping, colonnaded and vaulted walkways both interacting with the waterfront, and bringing the public up to the level of the palace which today stands behind tall walls. Whilst internally the new building functions as an entrance hall with necessary facilities, and creates a route into the existing palace.

Lay, Andrea N. "Neuromuscular Coordination during Slope Walking." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/7507.

Full text
Abstract:
The biomechanics and muscle activity of forward and backward slope walking was investigated in humans to gain additional insight into neural control strategies. An adjustable instrumented ramped walkway was constructed and validated. Kinematic, ground reaction force, and muscle activity data were collected from nine subjects walking at three grades (0%, 15%, and 39%) for each of four conditions (forward upslope and downslope and backward upslope and downslope). The changes observed in the data were generally progressive from 0% to 15% to 39% grade. During forward downslope walking the joint moment pattern at the knee changed significantly, power absorption increased, and changes in the muscle activity patterns corresponded directly to changes in joint mechanics. During forward upslope walking, the hip joint moment pattern changed significantly, power generation increased, and changes in the muscle activity pattern were not directly related to changes in the joint moments at all joints. The muscle activity pattern data suggest that modifications to the level walking control strategies were necessary during slope walking. Backward slope walking was used to further explore these findings. Backward upslope and forward downslope kinematics and kinetics were similar, as were those from backward downslope and forward upslope walking. However, power generation increased during upslope walking tasks and power absorption increased during downslope walking tasks, and the changes in muscle firing patterns were more similar for these tasks than for those with similar kinetics. Increased power generation required compensatory muscle activity at adjacent joints that was not directly related to the moments at those joints; increased power absorption did not require such compensatory activity, and muscle activity was directly related to the joint moments. Overall, these data suggest that changes in the control strategy and/or modifications of the level walking control strategy are strongly influenced by the power demands of a task. The characterization of forward and backward slope walking presented here is novel and has important implications for many patient populations; knowledge of the task mechanics may be used to develop or improve physical therapy and rehabilitation exercise programs as well as the design of replacement and/or assistive devices.

Wong, Ho-wing, and 黃可穎. "Works of laziness: writing sloth." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B49799654.

Abstract:
From the concept of acedia, sloth, indolence, laziness, idleness to passivity, such condition of the incapability to work and 'doing nothing' has long existed since antiquity to postmodernity. It forms an antagonistic—in fact dialectical relationship with the dominant work ethics for centuries since God proclaims to “rest the seventh day from all his work.” The emergence of each of the above terms connotes specific characteristics originated in particular periods of time to show a marginal and neglected form of existence. By investigating different manifestations of laziness and their relation with the work logic in phases of history, this thesis aims at presenting laziness as a possible form of resistance to the regime of work--from medieval times, when work was framed by the rigid ideology of Christianity and celebrated in religious terms, to capitalist modern societies, which speak of efficiency, increasing productivity and technological advancement. Emphasis will be placed on the modern times especially since the nineteenth century to examine the prominent changes in working conditions under increasingly structured forms of capitalism, to show how laziness manifests as a resistance that maintain one’s subjectivity in negotiation with the ubiquitous force of work, which has driven most people into conditions of miserable existence. By showing different facets of laziness, particularly focusing on those appearing in modern times, I would like to launch a dynamic dialogue between this concept and that of work, which is understood in terms of activity, and to problematize their dualistic nature so as to expose the arbitrariness of the dominant ideology of work and to show how resistance is always possible.
