Abstract:
Axial-flux permanent magnet machines are popular and widely used for many applications due to their attractive features such as light weight, low noise, high torque, robust and higher efficiency due to lack of field excitation. The main essence of this paper is to perform slotted and slotless axial-flux permanent magnet synchronous generator design based on theoretical sizing equations and then finite element analysis is reinforcement in order to get a more reliable and accuracy machine design. A comparative study of machine design and performances over the same rating but different configurations i.e., slotted and slotless are also discussed. And then, finite-element method (FEM) software was made for the slotted stator and slotless stator (AFPMSG) in order to compare their magnetic flux density and efficiency. The AFPMSG topology considered in this paper is a three-phase double-rotor single-stator topology with 16 pole-pairs, 2kW rated power and 188 rpm rated speed.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to show the proposed energy method for inductance calculation is valid for any number of poles, phases and any winding layout. Design/methodology/approach A two-dimensional (2-D) analytical energy-based approach is presented to calculate self-inductances and mutual inductances of brushless surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines. Findings The proposed calculation procedure is valid for brushless permanent-magnet machines with slotted or slotless stator structure. Comparisons between energy method and flux linkage method are presented based on simulation and experimental results. It shows that the energy method has an excellent agreement with the result obtained from finite element method (FEM) and experimental study. Originality/value This paper compares energy-based method with flux linkage method and FEM for inductance calculations in slotless and slotted permanent-magnet motors. The relations for inductance calculation are presented which are obtained based on 2-D analytical representation of magnetic field.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In light of incidents and concerns regarding the vulnerability of the global positioning system (GPS), the main purpose of the thesis is to look at alternative systems for radio guidance and to put up a serious study on such alternatives with receive and transmit antenna. There is also the need to design such antennas with multiple frequencies to offer robustness in the unlikely event that such adversarial attacks on the GPS happen. The basis on which such alternative antennas are designed is a slotted microstrip. The characteristics of the slot or slots on the microstrip are analyzed by mapping their exact locations on the patch and then noting the resultant center frequencies, the return losses, and the bandwidth. The activities associated with this also focus on the design, fabrication, validation, and characterization of one or more slotted antennas prototypes. The measurement of the antenna prototypes does confirm several frequencies that coexist to see applications, in aeronautical radionavigation, fixed-mobile radionavigation, and radiolocation. The antennas could also feature in a wide-area augmentation system (WAAS), satellite ground link system (SGLS) as well as in surveillance and precision approach radars. Some variations of the antenna are deployed in the areas of law enforcement, surveillance, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Applications of the antenna in an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) are feasible due to its multiple resonant frequencies. Radiolocation and radionavigation antennas have also been known to be mounted in UAVs or on tethered balloons along the borders of the United States to detect low-flying aircraft in support of drug interdiction programs.

Abstract:
An X band dual polarized slotted waveguide antenna array is designed with very high polarization purity for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. Horizontally polarized radiators are designed using a novel non-inclined edge wall slots whereas the vertically polarized slots are implemented using broad wall slots opened on baffled single ridge rectangular waveguides. Electromagnetic model based on an infinite array unit cell approach is introduced to characterize the slots used in the array. 20 by 10 element planar array of these slots is manufactured and radiation fields are measured. The measurement results of this array are in very good accordance with the simulation results. The dual polarized antenna possesses a low sidelobe level of -35 dB and is able to scan a sector of ±
35 degrees in elevation. It also has a usable bandwidth of 600 MHz.

Full text
Abstract:
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.,) an invasive, annual grass species, degrades range and pasture lands by out competing and replacing preferred native grass species resulting in economic and ecological losses. Current control strategies are costly and ecological risky. Soil nitrogen depletion by promoting microbial nitrogen utilization by application of a carbohydrate energy source such as sucrose may decrease cheatgrass's competiveness and permit seedling establishment of preferred native species. Review of the literature reveals attempts at restoration of native grasses and elimination of cheatgrass by nitrogen depletion with sucrose applications have failed or at best achieved limited success. We believe one reason for failure is that soil microbes utilize applied simple carbohydrates such as sucrose too rapidly resulting in only short periods of nitrogen depletion, and that application of sugar beet pulp may promote a longer state of nitrogen depletion. We hypothesize the growth of nitrogen dependent invasive grasses will be inhibited by nitrogen deprivation produced by mulch application of coarse granulated sugar beet pulp, and that the inhibition of growth is not related to a passive mulch effect. In a four armed green house study, we compared cheatgrass and bluebunch wheatgrass growth after application of ground sugar beet pulp at rates of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 2.0 and 4.0 tons per acre. As a control, granite chicken grit was similarly applied in equal volumes to rule out a passive mulch effect. At 35 days, there was a negative linear relationship between rate of sugar beet pulp application and cheatgrass growth (p <0.001) and BBW growth (p<0.002). The negative effect of sugar beet pulp on cheatgrass growth was twice the negative effect on blue bunch growth. Granite grit application did not decrease growth of either species. We conclude that sugar beet pulp application depresses cheatgrass growth and that the cause is not a passive mulch effect. Our data indicates that longer duration nitrogen deprivation may aid in promoting restoration of cheatgrass dominated acreages, and treatments such as sugar beet pulp application may permit native grass seedling emergence and establishment.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of changes in the physical parameters of tapered slot antennas (TSA) on their radiation characteristics and also to explore the possibility of reconfiguration in the radiation pattern of TSA by switching between two different types of tapering. There are mainly three physical parameters that affect the radiation pattern of TSAs. These are antenna length, aperture width and the ground extension. After designing a wideband microstrip line to slot line transition, the effect of antenna parameter variations on the beamwidth and sidelobe level of the antenna are investigated through the use of a commercially available electromagnetic simulation software HFSS by ANSOFT. The radiation characteristics of constant width slot antennas (CWSA) and linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSA) are compared. It is observed that CWSAs exhibit narrower beamwidth and higher sidelobe level whereas linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSA) have wider beamwidth with lower sidelobe level compared to each other. A novel switching architecture between CWSA and LTSA is proposed to obtain a reconfigurable antenna.

Abstract:
“Slowly Rushing Absent Mind” explores themes of origin and nature through poems about family history and the natural world. This collection explains poetry through poetry by using different forms—the ghazal, the prose poem, the sonnet and the lyric, to convey an awareness of a deeper consciousness. These poems seek to fill the space in the air above your shoulder at which the retail clerk stares as he hands you your change and wishes you good day. “The world we know,” Foucault explains, “is a profusion of entangled events;” these poems are meant to hint at a true beginning, one at which only the most exhaustive of genealogical research could possibly arrive, yet one that is intrinsic in the details of everyday life.

Abstract:
An interacting particle system is constructed in which a collection of independent Brownian motions are subject to the rule that each pair of particles shall coalesce at a rate given formally by ). dLt , where {Lt : t ~ O} is the intersection local time of the pair. This interaction mechanism is referred to as slowly-coalescing, in contrast to the more standard model in which particles coalesce immediately on collision. The process is shown to be the weak limit of a sequence of coalescing symmeteric random walks on the lattice n-1Z. Our indirect argument exploits the existence of a dual Markov process at both the discrete and the continuous level. By endowing each of the slowly-coalescing Brownian particles with a weight we are able to establish a more intimate duality, the dual process being the solution of a stochastic heat equation driven by Fisher-Wright noise.

Scullion, Mark Gerard. "Slotted photonic crystal biosensors." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3405.

Full text
Abstract:
Optical biosensors are increasingly being considered for lab-on-a-chip applications due to their benefits such as small size, biocompatibility, passive behaviour and lack of the need for fluorescent labels. The light guiding mechanisms used by many of them result in poor overlap of the optical field with the target molecules, reducing the maximum sensitivity achievable. This thesis presents a new platform for optical biosensors, namely slotted photonic crystals, which engender higher sensitivities due to their ability to confine, spatially and temporally, the peak of optical mode within the analyte itself. Loss measurements showed values comparable to standard photonic crystals, confirming their ability to be used in real devices. A novel resonant coupler was designed, simulated, and experimentally tested, and was found to perform better than other solutions within the literature. Combining with cavities, microfluidics and biological functionalization allowed proof-of-principle demonstrations of protein binding to be carried out. High sensitivities were observed in smaller structures than most competing devices in the literature. Initial tests with cellular material for real applications was also performed, and shown to be of promise. In addition, groundwork to make an integrated device that includes the spectrometer function was also carried out showing that slotted photonic crystals themselves can be used for on-chip wavelength specific filtering and spectroscopy, whilst gas-free microvalves for automation were also developed. This body of work presents slotted photonic crystals as a realistic platform for complete on-chip biosensing; addressing key design, performance and application issues, whilst also opening up exciting new ideas for future study.

Abstract:
AbstractAll Components with H-shaped section are widely used in steel structures, in which the connection of beam section to column flange (i.e. weak-axis connection) is inevitable. In order to study the mechanical properties of weak-axis connected steel plate shear walls, a 1/3 scaled steel plate wall specimen was designed and subjected to a cyclic test to investigate the properties of stiffness, strength, ductility and energy dissipation. On the basis of this, the partially slotted steel plate shear wall was proposed. The FE model of the test specimen was developed and verified with the test results by FE software Abaqus. Subsequently, the FE model of the partially slotted steel plate wall was developed to study mechanical properties by comparing it with the test specimen. The analysis results show that the partially slotted infill plate can fully play the tension field and avoid the beam’s in-span bending, which effectively improves the structural ductility and energy consumption. Although the partially slotted infill plate will weaken the lateral resistance, the partially slotted SPSW still accounts for 75% of that one without slots in lateral bearing capacity. Additionally, the ductility of this partially slotted one is up to 5.79, and its equivalent viscous damping ratio reaches 30%.

Abstract:
Abstract High loading design is a permanent pursuit in the field of the modern compressors to reduce the size and weight of the aero-engine. Blading with slots is a potential way to improve compressor performance. An innovative double-slot scheme was proposed and validated to control corner separation in a highly loaded compressor cascade in our previous studies. To evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) performance of blading with slots, the current research compares the performance of blading with full-span slots to that with blade end slots. First, the two-dimensional (2D) configuration performance is evaluated both for the datum and slotted profiles. The slotted configuration could effectively supress separation, especially under positive incidence conditions where the separation of the datum profile is large. Thus, two 3D blading forms, the full-span slots and the blade end slots (covering 20% of the span from the endwall), are compared within. Results show that blading with full-span slots could effectively reduce the loss under positive incidence angles, while blading with blade end slots could effectively reduce the loss above an incidence angle of −4°. The loss for the end slotted blade is lower than that of the full-span slotted blade under most incidence angles (within the range of 4°). The additional mixing loss of the jet and the main flow are caused by the full-span slots at the mid-span regions where the flow remains attached for the unslotted geometry. Blading with slots alters the flow structures and reorganises the flow in the blade end regions. The self-adaptive jets from the slot outlet push the accumulated low-momentum flow downstream and restrain its migration toward the mid-span, such that the uniform main flow in the blade mid-span region is enhanced.

Abstract A slotted tube is a device to reduce flow-induced noise. In order to understand the noise reduction mechanism of the tube, an experiment has been systematically performed. Noise measurements have been carried out for a variety of slot dimensions such as the length, the width, the thickness and the number of slots. In the case of a significantly long slot, a discrete tone is observed under comparatively lower pressure conditions. Three mechanisms of sound generation concerning the slotted tube have been clarified.

Abstract:
In this paper, a highly loaded transonic fan stage, which was designed and tested by Wennerstrom in the 70’s was selected to study the functions of skewed slot casing treatments. Three casings, each different in axial locations and slot directions, were designed and numerically studied by this research. Experience on optimum slot location and direction was summarized. The simulation was run by commercial CFD software Fine/Turbo. Un-steady simulations were performed on the casing treated rotors to depict the real nature of unsteadiness in a slotted casing. The rotor exit boundary conditions were set according to the parameters extracted from the stage simulation. With this condition, computational expense was much saved, and the attention was made solely focused on the slots and rotor interaction. Performance simulation at partial design speed (70% design speed) was also conducted. Unexpected performance improvement with the treated casing was observed at this speed. This unusual phenomenon was analyzed, with a corresponding explanation provided.

Computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer simulations are conducted for a novel shell-tube type heat exchanger. The heat exchanger consists of tube with a narrow slot oriented in the streamwise direction. Numerical simulations are conducted for the Reynolds number of 1500. The 3D turbulent flow in the tube bank region is modeled by k-ε Reynolds stress averaging method by employing ANSYS FLUENT. 3-D transient flow and heat transfer simulations are conducted to determine the flow structure and temperature profiles in the wake of cylinders in the first row and other rows. The effects of the slot size and the orientation and the arrangement of the cylinder in different configuration will be examined. The slotted tube heat exchanger improved heat transfer by more than 27% compare to the traditional shell-tube heat exchanger without slots. Enhancement in heat transfer is even higher at higher values of Reynolds number.

Abstract The main objective of this study is to understand the mechanisms of affecting the performance and flow field of a low speed centrifugal fan with blade surface slots. In the investigation, a spanwise slot, which is placed within the range of about 60% to 100% of the blade span, is applied to each blade surface of the impeller, and the partial blade pressure and suction surfaces for each blade are connected via the blade surface slot. The full-passage unsteady numerical results indicate that the performance of fan including the volute is improved among the overall mass flow rate by applying the blade surface slot, and the blade surface slots generate about an enhancement of 3.6% for the total pressure improvement, an improvement of 2.6% for the efficiency respectively at the design mass flow rate. The flow field analyses show that the injecting flows discharging from the blade surface slots can encourage the low energy flows near the blade suction surface in some blade passages. Hence, the boundary layer separations of the blade suction surface are restrained by the injecting flows, and the flow condition in the passag is considerately improved. Moreover, the adverse effect caused by the low energy flows is very serious in the partial blade passages near the shroud, while the flows in the blade surface slots have few positive effect on the low energy flows. So, the improvement by the slots on the flow fields is very small near the shroud region. Because the boundary layer separations on the blade suction surface are absent in most of the blade passages at about 60% of the blade span, the flows emerging from the slots have passive effects on the passage mainstreams. Further, in the case of blade surface slots, there is an obvious vortex near the blade trailing edge at about 60% of the blade span, and the vortex is close to the blade suction surface at some instants. As a result, the wake flow losses in the passage become large with the application of the slots. Briefly, within the slotted span range, the improvement of the flow field in the blade passages becomes large and then gets small, as the blade span decreases. Furthermore, the flow condition in the volute is improved thanks to the amelioration of the flows in some blade passages, and the degree of the second flows in the volute is weakened with the application of blade surface slots. Consequently, the flow losses in the volute are reduced effectively.

Abstract:
Traditional high-speed compressor experiments are limited by high cost, high risk, and low accuracy. Hence, developing the low-speed modelling method to replace high-speed experiments brings convenient for experimental investigation. The passive corner separation control with blade end slots, previously proposed by us, has been proved to be very effective in a highly loaded compressor cascade. The purpose of this study is to explore the low-speed modelling method for the compressor cascade blading with blade end slots. Positive design strategies are utilized with the parameterization of datum and end slotted cascade, respectively. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations are conducted to study the low-speed modelling method. Comparisons are made between the flow field of the low-speed modular cascade and the original high-speed cascade for both datum and slotted blades. Flow features of blade performance over the operating range, spanwise distribution of flow parameters, non-dimensional velocity on the blade surface, total pressure loss contours and limiting streamlines etc. appear in good accordance between the low-speed modelled slotted cascade and the original high-speed slotted cascade. Comparisons show that the low-speed modelling method developed for the cascade blading with blade end slots could provide similar flow features to the original end slotted cascade in a wide incidence range. Hence, this study proves the feasibility of applying the low-speed modelling process to the low-speed experimental validation of blade end slots.

Abstract:
In the present work, a narrow span-wide rectangular channel (referred to as a slot) is introduced and drilled near the leading edge of a finite-span cambered airfoil to study its impact on the overall aerodynamic performance. These slots are proposed to have two legs, where the first leg starts from the vicinity of the leading edge, and the second leg exits from the pressure-side of the airfoil. NACA 4412 is used as the baseline airfoil profile, and the influence of several geometrical parameters of the slots at different angles of attack (AoAs) ranging from 0 to 16 degrees are investigated on the lift and drag coefficients. The influence of slot’s length, width, and exit angles are studied, and it is demonstrated that longer and narrower slots that exit more aligned with the pressure-side streams are generally more suitable, and can result in better performance over the entire range of AoA. For the best case considered, a lift coefficient improvement as large as 15% is observed, while the drag penalty is insignificant. Furthermore, the inlet angle and the vertical position of slots are independently varied within reasonable ranges to characterize the slots further. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used for modeling and analysis. Simulations are performed at the chord-based Reynolds number of 1.6E6. Results are validated against published data and the results from a set of wind-tunnel experiment.

Abstract:
A promising flow analytical way to offset the respective shortcomings for the experimental measure and numerical simulation methods is presented. First, general topological rules which are applicable to the skin-friction vector lines on the passage surface, to the flow patterns in the cross-section of the cascade as well as on the blade-to-blade surface were deduced for the turbomachinery cascades with/without suction/blowing slots in this paper. Second, the qualitative analysis theory of the differential equation was used to investigate the distribution feature of the flow singular points for the limiting streamlines equation. The topological structure of the flow pattern on the cascade passage surfaces was discussed in detail. Third, the experiment and numerical simulations results for a linear compressor cascade passage with highly-loaded compound-lean slotted blade, which were combined to topologically examine the flow structure with penetrating slot injections through the blade pressure side and suction side. The results showed that the general topological rules are applicable and effective for flow diagnosis in highly-loaded compressor blade passage with slots. Finally, an integrated vortex control model, in which the blade compound-lean effect and the injection flow through the slots were coupled, was presented. The model shows that reasonable slot injection configurations can effectively control the concentrated shedding vortices from the suction surface of a highly-loaded compressor cascades passage, thereby the aerodynamic performance for the blade passage is remarkably improved. The present work provides a novel theoretical analysis method and insights of the flow for the turbine blade passage with cooling structures, aspirated compressor blade passage and other applications with new flow control configurations in turbomachinery field.

Abstract:
We introduce a new Thompson sampling-based algorithm, called marginal posterior sampling, for online slate bandits, that is characterized by three key ideas. First, it postulates that the slate-level reward is a monotone function of the marginal unobserved rewards of the base actions selected in the slates's slots, but it does not attempt to estimate this function. Second, instead of maintaining a slate-level reward posterior, the algorithm maintains posterior distributions for the marginal reward of each slot's base actions and uses the samples from these marginal posteriors to select the next slate. Third, marginal posterior sampling optimizes at the slot-level rather than the slate-level, which makes the approach computationally efficient. Simulation results establish substantial advantages of marginal posterior sampling over alternative Thompson sampling-based approaches that are widely used in the domain of web services.
