Full textNeutron stars are dense objects that are produced in core collapse supernova explosions. For the modeling of the supernova and of the subsequent cooling of the neutron star, neutrino absorption, emission, and scattering rates play a crucial role. In a large part of these astrophysical systems, nuclei are completely dissolved. Then the neutrino rates can be directly related to the response functions of nuclear matter, computed at the relevant density, asymmetry, and temperature. This thesis develops first the random-phase approximation (RPA) model for the response functions with Skyrme effective interactions in asymmetric nuclear matter and finite energy transfer, and relates the neutrino scattering rate to the response functions. Then, the energy and angle dependence of neutrino scattering rates in proto-neutron star and supernova matter within Skyrme RPA are studied. Many previous Skyrme interactions predict that neutron Fermi velocity exceeds the speed of light at densities that neutron stars can reach. To solve this problem and continue the computation of neutrino rates for astrophysical simulations at high densities using Skyrme functional theory, we then explore the construction of the new Skyrme functionals. Sky1 and Sky2 are obtained by including constraints from microscopic calculations of the effective mass in addition to binding energies and charge radii of finite nuclei and different microscopic equations of state of pure neutron matter. To test whether they are suitable for describing finite nuclei and neutron star matter, we compute properties of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter, including neutron star matter, and present them in this thesis. Also, we consider the Skyrme interaction as a density-functional rather than a density-dependent two-body force to explore the determination of the spin-dependent terms of the new Skyrme functionals. The parameters of the spin-dependent terms are determined by fitting the Landau parameters G_0 and G’_0 in neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter to the results of the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. Finally, we develop the improved fitting protocol for the new Skyrme forces by adding other constraints, such as the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at high density, the onset of the spurious instability in the spin-0 channel, the splitting between the spin up and down nucleon effective masses in the polarized matter, obtaining better new functionals, Sky3s and Sky4s. The response functions and neutrino scattering rates of neutron-star matter can be computed with the new functionals having realistic effective masses and Landau parameters

Full textThe theoretical tool of choice for the microscopic description of all medium- and heavy-mass nuclei is the Energy Density Functional (EDF) method. Such a method relies on the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking and restoration. In that sense, it is intrinsically a two-step approach. However, the symmetry restoration procedure is only well-defined in the particular case where the energy functional derives from a pseudo-potential. Thereby and as it has been recently shown, existing parameterizations of the energy functional provides unphysical results. Such a problem as well as the lack of predictive power call for developing new families of functionals. The first part of the present work is devoted to a study of the symmetry restoration problem and to the identification of properties that could constrain the analytic form of energy functionals that do not derive from a pseudo-potential. The second part deals with the construction of an energy functional that derives from a pseudo potential. The difficulties of such work are (i) the identification of the minimal complexity of the pseudo-potential necessary to obtain an energy functional that is flexible enough to provide high-quality EDF parameterizations, (ii) the tedious analytical derivation of the functional and of the associated one-body fields, (iii) the implementation of the latter in existing codes, and (iv) the development of an efficient fitting procedure. Eventually, it seems possible to generate a parameterization that strictly derives from a pseudo-potential and that provides as good results as state-of-the-art (quasi) bilinear functionals

Full textThe nucleus may seem well known, but its microscopic description still isn't perfect. Describing accurately the nuclei along the nuclear chart remain complicated.Nowadays, the effective interactions are the best choice to achieve such a goal, and can be sorted in two categories: finite-range and zero-range. Skyrme interaction, the main subject of this report, belongs to the latter. Used since the 50s because of its simplicity, it is an expansion of gradients up to the 2th order. However, an international collaboration, UNEDF, showed recently that this interaction was too limited to describe all the nuclear constraints given by experimental datas. The conclusion was the necessity of Skyrme interaction extensions. This thesis is describing the process from the design of the interaction to its use in nuclei and in fitting procedures.First, we review the requirements and the construction of a general nuclear interactions, and the main interactions used in nuclear structure, both finite and zero range. We then show the behaviour of these interactions in a perfect model: the infinite nuclear matter. This is considered a preliminary test for every interaction aiming to describe nuclei, and the performances of our interactions are discussed, along the performances of the other models. The last part of the thesis is the adaptation of our extension for calculations of nuclei. Furthermore, the fitting procedure of our extended Skyrme interaction on both infinite nuclear matter and nuclei quantities is detailed. A resulting parametrisation is presented at the end of the thesis, aiming to describe more accurately the nuclear chart and the additional physic provided by the new terms
