Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates that the graduate labour market has fundamentally changed in recent decades. By using secondary statistical data as well as reviewing existing empirical studies, the chapter illustrates some key changes shaping the British graduate labour market. The chapter first covers the growth of so-called high-skilled jobs. Then it looks at the evidence for the demand for skilled workers. It examines where graduates work and it covers trends in graduate wages. The chapter argues that the growth of skilled occupations may have partly been induced by the growing number of graduates in the labour force, yet it is unclear how the influx of graduates relates to the demand for their skills.

Abstract:
What is the impact of labour market regulations as measured by the OECD indicator of employment protection legislation (EPL) on capital and skill composition? Precisely, this study investigates the effects of changes in EPL on changes in four types of capital and three components of labour skill. They include construction, non-ICT, ICT, and R&D capital components on the one hand, and low-, medium-, and highly-skilled labour on the other. Our analysis is grounded on a large country–industry panel dataset of fourteen OECD countries, and eighteen manufacturing and market service industries, from 1988 to 2007. It shows that strengthening EPL lowers ICT capital and, even more severely, R&D capital relative to non-ICT and construction capital; it also brings down low-skilled relative to highly-skilled workers’ employment. These results suggest that structural reforms for more labour flexibility could have a favourable impact on firms’ R&D investment and hiring of low-skilled workers.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the impact of internal migration on child labour outcomes in Brazil. In our model, migration impacts child labour through changes in the local labour market, which is made up of both adults and children. We exploit variation in the concentration of both skilled and unskilled immigrants at the municipality level and employ an IV strategy that relies on the historical (1980) distribution of immigrants within the country. Our results show that internal migration of a given skill level has a negative impact on corresponding adults’ labour market outcomes. We also find that unskilled (skilled) immigration has a negative (positive) and significant impact on child labour. Finally, unskilled immigration increases children’s school attendance and decreases their likelihood of being idle.

Abstract:
States and employers are increasingly selecting highly skilled immigrants according to labour market qualifications and broad human capital attributes. This chapter considers the gender implications of the focus on skills through an examination of the different career trajectories of men and women. In particular, it considers the acknowledgement of part-time and non-continuous work in skilled immigration policy design as well as the potentially discriminatory effects of age limits. In doing so, it applies feminist theories from industrial relations and economics to the examination of skilled immigration policies in twelve countries, demonstrating variation across countries in their awareness to gender concerns.
