Liu, Weibin, and 刘卫斌. "Social capital, lineage and in situ urbanization, the case of "villages within city", Shenzhen, China." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/193492.

Full text
Abstract:
The study explores the relationship between lineage, social capital and in situ urbanization of “villages within city” in the context of China’s rapid urban expansion. The literature reviewed shows that there have been studies on many aspects of “villages within city” since the middle 1990s. However, the role of lineages during the in situ urbanization of “villages within city” is largely under-examined and remains as a research gap. This study endeavors to fill this cross-disciplinary gap. Taking notice of the differences between single-lineage “villages within city” and multi-lineage ones, the study explores the following two research questions: (1) does the level of social capital vary among “villages within city” with different lineage structures? If yes, in what way? (2) does social capital in “villages within city” influence the outcomes of urbanization? If yes, what role does it play? In order to address the above research questions, the study firstly consults three areas of study, namely, lineage, social capital and in situ urbanization of “villages within city”. Through examining the relationships among the three key research variables, the thesis demonstrates the significance of theoretical integration of the three concepts and develops a tentative analytical framework. Given the different lineage structures, it is hypothesized that single-lineage “villages within city”, compared with multi-lineage ones, are more likely to possess higher levels of social capital at the administrative village level, and thus could achieve better outcomes of urbanization. To test the hypotheses, two representative “villages within city” with different lineage structures in Futian district of Shenzhen — the single-lineage Xiasha administrative village (including six natural villages which are lived by six Huang sub-lineages) and the multi-lineage Shawei administrative village (including three natural villages that are inhabited by different lineages of Wen, Mo and Liang) — are selected as the case study sites after examining the development trajectory of villages and lineages in Shenzhen. The empirical study measures the levels of social capital in Xiasha and Shawei at both the natural village level and administrative village level through the use of a questionnaire survey, and examines the outcomes of urbanization of Xiasha and Shawei through literature review, department interview, site study and observation. Three major findings are identified through analyzing the case study: (1) lineage structures in some Chinese “villages within city” are institutional legacies of rural collectivization in the late 1950s; (2) there exists a higher level of social capital at the administrative village level in single-lineage “village within city” than that in multi-lineage one; (3) social capital at the administrative village level, other than that at the natural village level, has a positive role in promoting in situ urbanization of “villages within city” in terms of collective economy development, physical environment construction and lineage culture reservation.

Abstract:
Every architecure is being with life-force such as a plant who lives on the photosynthesis that need carbon dioxide + water + light energy, and provide oxygen in day time. On the contrary, Plants need oxygen and release carbon dioxide while they can not carry out the photosunthesis in night time. But both chemical reactions occurring on the same plant in different time in a day. People normally spend one-third of their for working in an office or studying in school, and their home is empty during the day time. People use the rest of their time on a dinner in restaurant outside, other activities or events; back to home to rest and nobody occupies commercial area in night time. Why can we not do all of life's events in the same building or place whenever we wish?

Abstract:
The resonance of a knock on a door uncovers its density. The smell of a wall describes its materiality. The texture of a floor may invite us to sit or lay down. The smoothness of a handrail comforts our ascent. Human skin is a powerful material that enables us to perceive and understand our surroundings. Skin is highly expressive; based on its color, texture, wear and plasticity we can read it, gathering information concerning culture, ethnic background, age, abuse, health and the tasks it performs on specific body parts. Skin itself reads as it is readable. Our skin can gather data through tactile perception and read our spatial surroundings. Architecture is an expressive act and the only discipline that stimulates all of our senses. An architect designs spaces that foresee and celebrate the bodily interaction of the inhabitant. The architecture of the 21st century seems to be geared toward a more optic experience, an influence of the digital world and its widespread effect. The architectural body of modern construction is made up of skins that convey no intentions of interaction between human skin, delivering a concoction of low quality materials that time and again are layered the same way and only aim to be cost efficient. The result is a bland, empty and "flat" experience. In a culture dominated by visual stimulation, can the design of architectural skins aid in the reading and understanding through touch of an architectural body's spatial sequence?

Abstract:
I have attempted to denaturalize and historicize tourism in Crested Butte as an economic, social, and physical phenomenon that fits into the broader histories of Colorado and the West, as well as the broader histories and realities of travel and tourism. Why do people seek out certain places and experiences in the name of pleasure? How did these activities and spaces come to qualify as desirable? What about people who fall outside temporally limited definitions of tourist, such as those who come to Crested Butte for only a season or a year, or second homeowners who stay for months at a time, or, really, any resident? All these people value the place and their experiences in the exact same ways, influenced by the same physical and psychic constructions of desirability. These current constructions are informed by a long history of evolving tastes and interests, the products of converging local, national, and international dynamics. In tracing a history of tourism and especially tourism in the West, I used a variety of secondary sources authored by scholars of tourism, the West, and Colorado. In charting a history of Crested Butte, I utilized archived local newspapers. I spoke to a number of current Crested Butte residents to understand how Crested Butte locals view themselves, their community, their lifestyles, and their town.

Abstract:

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) was first initiated in Colombia due to shortages of incubators and the incidence of severe hospital infections of new-born infants during hospital stay (Feldman, 2004). Currently it is identified by UNICEF as a universally available and biologically sound method of care for all new-borns, particularly for low birth weight infants (Department of Reproductive Health and Research, 2003) in both developed and developing countries. The Western Cape Provincial Government implemented a policy on KMC as part of their strategy to decrease the morbidity and mortality of premature infants in 2003 (Kangaroo Mother Care Provincial task team, 2003). Essential components of KMC are: skin-to-skin contact for 24 hours per day (or as great a part of the day as possible), exclusive breastfeeding and support to the motherinfant dyad. Successful implementation of KMC requires relevant education of nurses, education of mothers on KMC by nursing staff, monitoring of the implementation of KMC by nurses, planning for a staff mix with varying levels of skill and experience with KMC, the identification of institution specific barriers to the implementation of KMC, and the implementation of institution specific strategies to overcome these barriers (Wallin,et al., 2005
Bergman &
Jurisco, 1994
Cattaneo, et al., 1998). This study aims to determine the knowledge of and attitude towards kangaroo mother care, of nursing staff and kangaroo mothers in the Eastern sub-district of Cape Town.

Skin detection techniques are widely applied to locate and to track parts of the human body with the objective of posterior recognition, having received great attention in recent years in the development of research in reason to the innumerable possible applications with the detection and tracking of faces, identification of naked people, identification of hand movements, among others. The present work proposed the construction of mathematical models for the detection of human skin tones such as, white, yellow, brown and black in digital color images in the RGB and HSV color spaces. Using a set of human skin tone samples, mathematical models were constructed describing how the variables of each color pixel in the RGB and HSV systems interrelate. To understand the answer of the proposed system, the mechanistic model was chosen, dividing it into components, observing the behavior of each part and the interactions that occurred between them. The proposed RGB filter reached a 98.3657% reduction index of the spectrum, classifying only 1.6343% (253,159 tones) as possible skin tones and the HSV model reduced the likely spectrum to 2.5352% (94,030 tones), discarding 97.4648% of the colors as candidates for human skin tones. When the proposed filters, were applied to the reduction of the probable range of human skin tones, well-defined bands in the geometric representation of the color spaces were selected. The experimental validation of the effectiveness of the RGB model showed that the proposed filter has conservative characteristics in the detection of skin, mistakenly classifying as skin only 6.7163% of the sample space. The proposed RGB filter has low sensitivity of 61.0831% and high specificity of 95.2769% in the detection of human skin in digital images. The HSV model had rates of (54,6333%) low sensitivity and (92,6390%) high specificity, considered low when compared to the performance of the other algorithms.

Heyer, Antje. "Opportunities for Collaborative Planning in South Africa? : An analysis of the practice 're-blocking' by the South African SDI Alliance in Cape Town." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Kulturgeografiska institutionen, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-124485.

Full text
Abstract:
This Master thesis is written in the field of collaborative planning aiming to challenge the collaborative approach on it applicability, especially in the context of the Global South. As a case study it looks on the urban poor community participatory practice, the so called 're-blocking' in Cape Town – an example of insitu informal settlement upgrading. It questions not only to what extent re-blocking displays a successful approach of collaborative planing but also whether it can lead to more inclusive cities in South Africa. The field data was gained through qualitative semi-structured interviews, observations and an analysis of national housing policy documents. The findings evaluate re-blocking as a successful example of collaborative planning in the sense that local communities are truly involved in the process and have a lot of decision making power. Also, re- blocking can be replicable to other cities in South Africa. Yet it faces several risks in community mobilisation and communication and can only be operated on a small scale. Therefore, the thesis concludes that re-blocking itself may not lead to inclusive cities, however as an example of community participation it may change the mindset of the South African society and (local) government towards informal community inclusion.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last decades, film theories with their focus on the mere audiovisual quality of cinema have been questioned by film scholars with a phenomenological interest. According to these critical approaches, the film experience cannot be understood through a mere involvement of the eye (and the ear). In this context, to disregard the significance of a multisensory attachment to the film results in the consideration of relationship between the film and the viewer to be a dominating one. This dissertation examines this multisensory attachment and aims to define the film experience as an embodied relationship between the film and the viewer by means of a formal analysis of the Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s early films. Throughout the dissertation, it is argued that Ceylan encourages his viewer in various forms to have a more sensual and immediate experience of his films rather than to compel them to adhere to symbols and abstractions through a kind of intellectual effort – an intellectual effort that would damage the “sensuous” attachment between the film and the viewer.

Abstract:
This study was carried out during the spring of 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa with a Minor Field Study (MFS) scholarship funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). South Africa is a country with a complex society due to the still recent history of Apartheid. South Africa faces great challenges with the gap between rich and poor, high unemployment and deep expertise gaps between the white minority and the historically disadvantaged coloureds and black majority. As a result the contemporary situation is extensive segregation and difficulties for the multicultural population to conduct a common cultural identity. The aim of this study was to find out how four South African issues of international fashion magazines deals with the representation of black, white and coloured people. Furthermore, to find out how South African women from socially diverse areas experience and perceive this representation. Quantitative content analysis, connotative and denotative picture analysis and the conduction of interviews was made in order to reach a result. Consequently, it turned out that the investigated magazines do not present a fair and equal representation of the South African society, hence highly over representing the white minority in each magazine. Additionally, South African women do not describe the fashion magazines as presenting an equal representation of race, neither that a reality based ideal is being conveyed.

Ever since the Industrial Revolution, human beings never stop plundering the nature''s resource to satisfy their desire for material substance. Until the late 20th century, by suffering from the calamity of the deteriorated natural environment, humans became aware of the importance of harmony and mutuality between humans and the environment, then begin plunging into the relevant studies. Therefore, we can make an assertion that "Paragensis Ecological Environment" will be the most significant issue of this century. This thesis mainly targets the urban, a place where humans highly gathered. Beginning from the ecological point, learning from the environment, and applying the function and role of nature to the urban planning, to improve the worsening environmental problems. Hence, moving toward to the goal of sustainable developing. This thesis composes of two sections as follows: The first section is theory and tool constitution. First, let us compare the urban to a complex ecological system and build up an integrated ecological system framework from the decomposition of the ecological meaning and the generalization of the environmental impact factors. The framework includes circulation relation, life relation, maintaining system, environment planning, land usage, transportation system, open space, community mutuality, architectural planning, and human ecology livelihood. Next, through the related research, discussion, and categorization of concepts, we bring up the new thinking of eco-urban base to break up the confusion of the traditional main stream thinking system. Moreover, it refers to the basic claim and action strategy of the eco-urban. Finally, after the construction of a series of the universal pattern, the study will become the formula for the eco-urban development of the new century.。 The second section is the designing practice. Through the eco-urban designing of Chiao-Shi, we join the eco-urban theory to its application. By presenting the concept of sustainable city through"Green Town" model, we can take this example to be our reminder of the future sustainable urban design.

This thesis focuses on the formation of the settlement of mining industry in Jin-gua-shi. The influence of the industry on local life is an important dimension in this research. The formation of Gin-gua-shi settlement attributed to the development of mining industry, which attracted many people to move and settle down in this town. Through 1897 to 1987, the Japanese domination during the colonization period and the administration of Tai-jin company during KMT governance had great influence on the development of this place. The influence is reflected in every aspects of local life, including the economic system, the structure of the space of its settlement, the way of daily consumption and entertainment, and the community ceremonies and rituals. The following are themes and methods of the thesis: 1. To do field research and to describe the natural environment and culture of the settlement so as to represent the characteristics of this mining town will be a main section. The geographical features have great influence on the formation of the settlement. In cultural aspect, I focus on the establishment of the settlement and the process of migration. I approach this issue, the historical development of the mining industry in Jin-gua-shi, from a larger historical background. In this way, we can have further understanding of the influence of the Japanese domination during colonization and the administration of Tai-jin Company during KMT governance. 2. To understand the working condition of the local people, and to explore how the economic system affected habitants after industrialization, which happened during the Japanese domination and the administration of Tai-jin company, is another concern of this paper. Beside, how miners think about their working experience and how the Japanese people established Jin-gua-shi settlement and their influences on the arrangement of the space are also important. This paper explores how the Japanese people and Tai-jin Company dominated the means of consumption and entertainment of local people, and how they affected the community rituals and activities. In the light of Foucault’s interpretation of power, this paper explores how power was maneuvered in all the aspects of daily life in Jin-gua-shi under the domination of Japan. During colonization, the lifestyle of Taiwanese working class was dominated by their economic activities. The working class had no control over their lives. In that situation, the Taiwanese people used community rituals as a means of resistance. Local ceremonies and rituals are means to raise public awareness of the importance of community and to promote public identification of the community. Moreover, through the understanding of the mining industry in Jin-gua-shi , the arrangement of the space in the settlement, the way of daily consumption, entertainment, and community ceremonies and rituals, this paper sheds light on unique characteristics of Jin-gua-shi and distinguishes differences between the settlement of Jin-gua-shi and that of Jiou-fen.

Due to the absoluteness of time’s elapsing and the irreplaceable nature of space, every mood out of human experience can be neither recorded nor recollected and every moment in real life cannot be returned, either. However, the American playwright Thornton Wilder (1897 – 1975) enables his audiences to face and ponder those universal conditions through the form of his theatre. Wilder’s unique treatment of theatre, by shattering the conventional limitations of time and space, makes the duration on the stage unconfined and across the past and present. His revolutionary techniques and proficient style of writing are devoted to depicting life’s unreturnable yet circular and continual qualities, which profoundly express his optimistic attitudes and affirmation of human life. By and large, his plays are meant to share his open-minded outlook on life and comprehensive view of the universe. In Our Town, only a few chairs and ladders are economically used instead of piles of actual properties. Wilder employs the skill of pantomime to present every existent appearance in our daily life by means of imagination. Moreover, he produces a dramatic central figure, the Stage Manager, to remind the audience of their nearly forgotten memories through regular routine, love, marriage, and death to understand life further and to feel its ardor and continuity. The most substantial but complicated entanglement in human life are all displayed here. Some critics consider The Skin of Our Teeth is Wilder’s best play for the depth and diversity of its theme, in which he emphasizes man’s courage stimulated by disasters and predicaments of the human existence. The first chapter is a general introduction. In Chapters Two and Three, Wilder’s two Pulitzer-Prized dramas, Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth, are respectively studied in the light of its form and presentation. Our Town, in some aspects, resembles the theatricality of Bertolt Brecht’s “Epic Theatre” and The Skin of Our Teeth, in terms of the treatment of characters and actors, reflects similar theatrical style and belief in Luigi Pirandello’s plays. The theatrical features related to Symbolism, Expressionism, and other literary movements are also in the realm of discussion. In Chapter Four, I try to explore the ubiquity of reality of the two plays. Chapter Five is here by a conclusion.

Nuo is a folk religious ritual. People utilize Nuo to exorcise evils, prayer and reward God. With the development of social modernization, beliefs of original religious have been affected. Since 1990, folk artists in San-Cha Town, En-Shi City, Hu-Bei Province have been adapting the scenes of the ritual and moving them to the stage, because of preserving the culture. Therefore, the Nuo has been developed.   Nuo in San-Cha incorporates and integrates elements of folk Taoism and Buddhism. The Nuo inherits the characteristics of Tu-Jia folk music in the southwestern area of the mainland. Moreover, it includes local folk music such as Shua-Shua and Lian-Xiang. From the development of the ritual to the drama, with the change of the purpose and function of the performance, the adaptations of music is generated.   The researcher conducted field work and data collections in this study. This thesis introduces a panoramic view of San-Cha Town, integrates the temporal context of San-Cha Culture, constructs a ritual scene, and describes current situation about promotion of Nuo. Additionally, the researcher introduces art forms such as masks, props, implements, and paintings, analyzes the basic forms of music, nuclear cavities, squeaks, and lyrics. Furthermore, the researcher outlines Huan-Yang-Nuo’s background, live recordings, and music analysis. Based on the cultural point of view, it may need to rethink the possibility for returning of the changed Huan-Yang-Nuo in music and its meaning and values of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

"South Africa's spatial development initiatives : the case of the Lubombo SDI and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/2500.

Full text
Abstract:
A varied literature has emerged assessing the history and principles of the SDI programme and its individual initiatives. Within the literature, a widespread critique has developed that views the SDIs as falling short in two crucial areas. First, the SDIs have, in general, had limited developmental impacts . Second, many of the initiatives failed to develop adequate institutional responses to the specific conditions they faced in their various localities. The study describes the Lubombo SDI and its anchor project, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. It argues that the Lubombo SDI, from the outset, took institutions seriously with a long view of development. It did not seek to deliver large-scale investment in a short period. Rather, it focused on shifting the development fundamentals - including key aspects of the Lubombo region's institutional arrangements - and concentrating its resources on facilitating a major project capable of pulling the various agencies with a stake in the region's development onto a common platform. This concentration of effort, and the creation of a dedicated authority with a clear statutory mandate to promote development and conservation, has brought advances to an area where development was effectively blocked for many years. But the dynamic nature of the institutional environment remains a key challenge affecting the GSLWP and the execution of the Authority's mandate. The ability of the Authority to continue mediating the multiple tensions and complexities affecting the GSLWP will be crucial if the agenda first set by the Lubombo is to be carried forward in the coming years.
