Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a first evaluation of the effectiveness of the early bird discount on ski lift tickets by estimating the impact on hotel overnight stays of the Saas-Fee destination. Design/methodology/approach The difference-in-differences (DID) approach is used to compare winter sport destinations with and without the price reduction before and after the introduction of the price discount. The sample is composed of the 54 largest Swiss winter sport destinations for the seasons 2013/2014 and 2016/2017. Findings DID estimations show an increase in overnight stays of Swiss residents by 50 per cent as compared to the control group. Quantile regression estimations for the conditional upper part of the overnight stays distribution reveal a lower average treatment effect of 38 per cent. However, DID estimates for total overnight stays (domestic and foreign) are much smaller – about 17 per cent – indicating that the price reductions are not effective in attracting foreign visitors. Results are not sensitive when taking into account a large number of control variables (elevation, size and snow making capacity). Research limitations/implications As tourists visiting winter sport destinations are interested in a mix of activities, lift ticket revenues or number of skier days should be used as an alternative outcome measure. Practical implications As positive effects on local tourism demand are mainly limited to Swiss tourists, such price strategies should be carefully considered. In the long term, the skiing market will stagnate or even shrink for several reasons (population ageing, climate change and changes in leisure preferences). Originality value This paper provides a first quantitative evaluation of price discounts in tourism research. Knowledge about the discounts and consumers reactions to sales promotions are of great interest to marketing managers in today’s competitive ski market.

Abstract:
Two California cosmetic surgeons are in the news. The first is Tony Ryan, a general plastic surgeon from Santa Barbara. We meet Tony and his wife, Montana, at the Little Nell Hotel in Aspen, Colo, where they are on a working ski vacation. Tony is the fictional creation of Mark Berman, Santa Monica cosmetic surgeon and chairman of the Academy's credentials committee. Mark's book, titled Substance of Abuse, is about Tony assuming the job of leading the country's first experimental legal drug program in Santa Barbara. It involves a murder, political corruption, a smart wife, and international travel and intrigue. It is reminiscent of John Grisham's novel The Firm. The underlying theme of the work is libertarian and points out the failure of the war on drugs. Illegal drugs cost us tens of billions of dollars a year because users commit crimes in order to keep buying, causing police and prosecutors to expend their time and resources chasing drug users instead of real criminals. Moreover, our overflowing prisons are full of criminals convicted of so-called victimless crimes, and those incarcerated drug criminals are taken out of the economy, often leaving their families wards of the state. Perhaps someday drug usage will be decriminalized and an effective system of rehabilitation will be in its place.

Abstract:
The article analyses the Olympic project inf uence on Sochi health resort modern tourist infrastructure formation and development. It is focused on the analysis of the processes, which took place in collective means of accommodation system on the dif erent stages of Olympic project implementation. In particular, the article contains the analysis of the data on collective means of accommodation number and structure changes, as long as hotel room capacity of the city at the time of Candidature File set up didn’t met the IOC requirements and conf ned Sochi’s development possibilities in its function as a mountain and ski resort. Examination of changes in local tourist infrastructure was carried out in order to estimate to what degree the goals proclaimed in Candidature File were implemented, including the task to assure conditions to convert Sochi resort to all-year-round world class resort and its further sustainable development. An improvement of accommodation system is considered as one of the most important conditions of tourist f ows’ growth and ef ective usage of material and nonmaterial Olympic Games 2014 Legacy. An important aspect of this research is the current situation analysis and identif cation of problems, which prevent ef ective usage of Sochi tourist infrastructure established in post-Olympic period. After examination of tourist industry internal and external factors that determine the tourist f ows capacity and dynamics we conclude that transport accessibility is the most important condition of tourist f ows stable growth. Materials presented in the article are the intermediate research results of the project “The analysis of sociopolitical, economic and ecological consequences of Olympic project implementation” which is being carried out within the frameworks of RAS Presidium fundamental research program №32.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test for the presence of bubbles in the US lodging/hotel real estate investment trust (REIT) subsector from 1994 to 2016. It also compares the profitability of a buy-and-hold strategy with several technical trading rules when applied to lodging REITs. Design/methodology/approach To investigate speculative bubbles, the sequential right-sided unit root tests of Phillips, Shi and Yu (2015a, b) are used. Findings The results confirm the possibility of the existence of multiple bubbles and explosive behavior in prices and the price-dividend ratio. One of the detected bubbles coincides with the financial economic crisis of 2008 using both measures. In addition, several technical rules are found to be superior to a naïve buy-and-hold strategy even after adjusting for risk. Practical implications These findings will be of interest to policy makers, who can use such models as an early alert to take anticipative action to avoid bursting of bubbles and consequent negative effects on the economy. The findings also provide important information to investors attempting to devise trading rules that utilize the signals from bubble detection, as well as to hotel executives devising policies aimed at reducing risk and creating more firm value to maximize shareholder wealth. Moreover, valuation and bubbles are important to lenders and creditors who use assets as collaterals for financing hotel REITs. Originality/value Hotels are a unique hybrid of retail and housing that combine operating business with real estate. This paper is the first to investigate speculative bubbles in lodging REITs.

Abstract:
A characteristic feature of the first guesthouses and hotels in the towns located in the Giant Mountains was their location in close connection with nature. Usually, the developments from the turn of the 20th century freely blended in with a green space amongst immeasurable mountain landscape or a romantic park layout as well as sports and recreation areas. Sports venues such as toboggan runs, bobsleigh runs, ski jumping hills, ski lifts, ski runs, tennis courts, swimming pools and ice rinks were situated in a way giving the impression of a compositional and functional whole with villas and guesthouses. They were placed within larger green spaces with a wide view of the Giant Mountains range from one side or the Jizera Mountains on the other, in direct contact with forest nature and fresh air. The tourist and residential developments were supposed to be an elegant background for sporting events with the mutual use of all natural values of the landscape. Over time, a change in the needs and expectations of tourists and athletes resulted in the fact that some sports areas lost their original purpose or were re-developed. In this situation, guesthouses and hotels lost their attractive neighbourhood. Apart from many other reasons, the harmony between developed areas and open, green areas was disturbed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine if we can identify any differences how the reality show Paradise hotel highlights gender in the seasons 2010 and 2018. This is achieved through the participant’s interactions and the producer’s role in this representation. To make our arguments valid in the results and analysis, we will support our claims to theories related to gender, sexuality and communication. In the theory and previous research section we describe how these theories work and how these elements play an essential role for our study. The material for this study is a strategic selection of two episodes from the season 2018 and four episodes from the season 2018. The method of this research is a qualitative study. In this section we describe its advantages and disadvantages related to our study and why it has been chosen. In the analysis and result section we categorize characteristic scenes to illustrate what we have seen and how we interpret these themes linked to essential theories and former research. Further on, we illustrate the differences between the seasons and highlights the most significant results in the discussion section. The result of this study expose that Paradise Hotel have significant differences of how the female participants are represented in the introductions of the seasons 2010 and 2018. We can identify a typical representation of a female in 2010 and a more powerful and confident woman in 2018. Further on, the production in the latest season are consciously giving the power of the game in the female’s hands. The men in this season are represented as stereotypes (romantics, badboys and sports-beasts). The male competitors, in both seasons, have a tendency to be represented as sexual and powerful in the introduction. On the other hand, we cannot perceive that the men in the 2010 season appear this way later on in the program. The woman in the same season, didn’t particularly need to appear in line with their introduction either. The latest season depicted a more vulgar approach to sex. Furthermore, we couldn’t see a difference how the sexes talked about sex. The sexuality in this season could also be recognized as more floating and norm-breaking. Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the meaning of images for reading comprehension within adult second-language education "Sfi- svenskundervisning för invandrare" i.e. Swedish language teaching for immigrants. Today's teaching programmes outlines that students from different cultural contexts and educational levels should be able to comprehend information in both written texts, from images and also within different topics. In order to achive my results I have used a qualitative method, followed by individual interviews. Initially the informants were divided into two groups of which one group read a text accompanied with pictures while the other group read the same text but without the pictures. After reading, the informants were asked questions relating to the text they had just read. The results showed that the informants who had been reading the text along side with the pictures reached better results than the informants who had read the same text without the pictures. The result also showed to be corresponding to previous research findings within the area, wich shows that if there is clarity between picture and text, the picture will contribute to a better coprehension of the text as well as a better comprehension of the content of the picture; particularly regarding pedagogical teaching materials.

Abstract:
AbstractCompost is a widely accepted organic fertiliser throughout the world. It is being produced using a wide variety of source materials at household to commercial scale. With the increased population and changes in food consumption pattern tending towards a vegetable- and meat-rich diet, the amount of organic waste generated in urban and peri-urban settings has increased. Many governments promote composting as a process that helps them to reduce the volume of organic waste and recycle nutrients back to croplands. Some examples of organic waste accumulated in large scale include household waste from urban and peri-urban settings, sewage, animal farm waste, agricultural waste from large-scale markets, food debris, and kitchen waste from hotels. The composition of compost varies in a wide range depending on the nature of materials used to produce it. The safety concerns related to compost also vary along the same line. The quality of compost has become a subjective term that means different aspects to different bodies due to a lack of commonly agreed standards to regulate the composting process and the final product itself. Recent research findings indicate that compost can serve as a carrier of potentially toxic trace elements, organic pollutants, and determinants of antimicrobial resistance to the environment and along the food chain. Producing good-quality compost safe to human health and the environment at large has become a challenge that should be addressed at various levels: from production to policymaking. This chapter discusses some of the major challenges faced in Sri Lanka with compost making. To prepare the background for this discussion, information on the policies and current practices of nutrient management in Sri Lanka is also presented. The context may be applicable to many other developing countries in the tropics.

Events play a significant role in today’s society, and for tourism destinations they are important due to their tourist, social and cultural functions (Getz, 2007), as well as their role in local and regional development (Wood, 2005). First and foremost, events are a great anchor for attracting tourism, providing tourists with a prime opportunity to get to know the local culture and experience the essence of the place. During an event, visitors have a unique chance to interact with the local community, gaining a deeper experience of the ambience, customs and local culture. Events can also help in improving a place’s image, creating a window for positive media coverage. Finally, for the residents themselves, events are a unique occasion to celebrate the local culture and interact within the community – you can see examples of this in the opening Spotlight above. According to Jackson (2013), three industries in particular are shaping the growth of the events sector (see Figure 9.1). Firstly, the hospitality industry - be it hotels, restaurants or venues - has viewed events as a way of encouraging new clientele or increasing the yield of existing customers. This is the case for the World Ski and Snowboard Festival held in Whistler, Canada every April in order to increase occupancy rates at the end of the winter season. Hotel rooms are fully booked during the event, which spans two weekends in order to maximize occupancy rates.

We left the city of Richland,Washington, on the desert road leading to the Hanford LIGO site to spend two days visiting the now-famous gravitational wave detector observatory. When my wife, Patricia, and I left our hotel, the sky was overcast with dark-gray clouds. There was a chilly, damp wind, and we had taken our coats to shield us from a typical March day in eastern Washington. The road to the site was straight, and we looked out over the unobstructed landscape covered with sagebrush and tumbleweeds blowing in the wind, all ringed by purple mountains in the distance. Hanford was one of the sites in the Manhattan Project, which produced the nuclear bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. We met very little traffic on our way, other than trucks leaving the infamous reactor site left by the Manhattan Project. The legacy of that project, the largest nuclear waste site in the United States, has contaminated the groundwater underneath 61 square miles of the site, and it threatens the headwaters of the Columbia River....

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chapter Three compares and contrasts the psychotic realism of Psycho and American Psycho to the financial realism of more contemporary finance fictions such as Alger’s The Darlings. The case-study in this chapter is Robert Harris’ science-fiction thriller The Fear Index. While The Fear Index continues the finance novel’s theme of psychosis—its main character, a finance man, is suggested to be psychotic and the novel includes a murder scene set in a hotel shower that is clearly inter-textual with Hitchcock’s film. The novel also resists this theme by refusing to blame everything that is happening to its main character on psychosis. Instead, it gradually reveals that the source of the evils narrated in the book is a trading algorithm that has gone rogue. The Fear Index thus introduces its readers to the contemporary economy of algorithmic, high-frequency trading—a reality that, while it may sound like science fiction, is represented in the novel in a realist, and at one point even documentary-like, mode. Generally received as a sci-fi thriller, The Fear Index thus presents an important step forward in relation to the psychotic realism of American Psycho in that it resists what Joseph Vogl in his philosophical study of the economy has called “the spectralization of capital.” The economy is certainly not forgotten in Harris’ novel but instead takes center-stage.

Abstract:
The sky is a blinding white and blue, and the little minibus from Listvianka to Irkutsk flits over the folds of the Angara Valley like a bumblebee, slightly ungainly and, to an observer, perhaps not quite in control of its trajectory, but confident in its own path and in the completion of its journey. We’ve seen our last of Baikal. One last run alongside daughter Angara and James and I will get our final glimpse of the lake’s cobalt water, bearing northwest for the turbines and factories of the Angarsk industrial corridor and then, slightly tarnished, on to her rendezvous with her beloved Yenisei and finally the Arctic ocean, 2,500 river kilometers downstream. One last pass through Irkutsk, and we’ll be back on the beast-machine bound for Moscow and beyond, and a world more familiar if still not known. We’ve seen our last of Baikal, but I’m pretty sure that I, anyway, am not leaving it behind, that it will never quite stop flowing through me. Blood has the same salinity as the ocean, someone once told me—we never really left the sea, we just carry it around inside us. Alas, this little detail of life turns out to be just too exquisite to be true, but it sure works as metaphor—we all carry around a biological memory of where and what we come from, from the water that makes up roughly sixty percent of our bodies to the ninety-eight or so percent of our genes that we share with chimpanzees. And so it is with Baikal—the lake inseparable from the people who love it in so many complex and ambiguous ways—I’ll carry a piece of it around in every part of me, like a new strand of DNA that has spliced itself in with mine and changed ever so slightly who I am and how I live in the world. For our last couple of nights back in Irkutsk, James and I stay in a downtown hotel, for about three times the cost of the American House, where, Olga tells us, we can finally get our visas properly registered.

Abstract:
Conflicts between engineers and technicians in maintenance departments of hotels can be impacted on both individual and organizational performance either constructively or destructively. Generally, the destructive impacts of conflicts on organizational performance are severe than constructive impacts. Therefore, understanding the nature of the major conflicts between engineers and technicians in maintenance departments is significant to provide high- quality maintenance services within hotel facilities to deliver the best hospitality services to foreign and local guests. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the nature of existing major conflicts between engineers and technicians in the maintenance departments of Sri Lankan hotel facilities. A qualitative approach was adopted by using the case study research strategy (five nr of cases) and empirical data was collected via two expert interviews in each case, and document review within selected cases. Manual content analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that 13 existence major conflicts between engineers and technicians in maintenance departments of Sri Lankan hotel facilities were based on seven conflict categories with comparing the literature findings.

Abstract:
Water is the world's most precious resource, vital for humanity and the remainder of the world. Due to the incredible water consumption in the hotel industry, hoteliers are required to pay more concern on water saving. The water consumption of the hotel is directly influenced by existing water efficiency practices. Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS) provides a structure or collections of metrics to determine the level of water efficiency achievable by a building. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to identify how LEED certification guide hoteliers to achieve water efficiency. The literature synthesis highlights the water efficiency practices, which should be followed by the hoteliers in order to obtain LEED certification. Accordingly, it guides hoteliers to achieve water efficiency under four categories such as outdoor water usage reduction, indoor water usage reduction, cooling tower water usage reduction and water metring. Further, the study identifies the performance gaps between LEED certified hotels and non-LEED certified hotels by highlighting the water efficiency practices adapted by worldwide LEED certified hotels. Moreover, the study revealed that LEED is the most adaptable system used in Sri Lanka among other green rating systems due to its glob-al recognition. The findings of this study could be used by hoteliers as a basis in understanding the available water efficiency practices and measures for the hotels that could be utilised in achieving water efficiency.

V £lanku smo predstavili pristop k analizi sen-timenta komentarjev hotelskih gostov s pomo£jo slovarjev in metode Naivni Bayes.
A big commercial and entertainment complex called Meydan One, designed by the American architectural firm AE7, is currently under construction in Dubai, UAE. The complex consists of a big shopping mall surrounded by different towers for offices and hotels, a ski slope, gardens with lagoons, etc.

The mall has a dominant long and wide corridor called the “canyon” which is crossed by 7 steel footbridges, the subject of this paper. The bridges share aesthetic traits amongst another, as well as with the roof over the canyon, creating a unified whole.

The paper outlines the mall as the context of the footbridges. Their design and structure are then explained with focus on how a single structural system is adapted to different situations. The paper concludes with describing the sophisticated erection sequence necessitated by the use of steel plates as tensile members.

Abstract:
Landscape, cavity, courtyard, skin, pergola are some of the elements of the Mediterranean abacus that architecture tries to transfigure into a single substance but also as a derivation of a great mother, the Mediterranean Sea. However, we can suppose that all these elements come from an idea that acts as a trait d'union, an intuition that made the domestic space of the Mare Nostrum the place of the myth of living: the innovative idea of horizon summarized as the ability of the gaze to observe outward. Gio Ponti, Bernard Rudofsky and Luigi Cosenza are the architects of the materialization of this idea where the horizon is not only found in the relationship with the landscape but is present within the domestic space. In this space full of symbolism and origin, three houses are a body to be vivisected and rediscovered. Casa per Positano... and other shores, Hotel San Michele in Capri, Casa a Procida become autoptic and utopian spaces from which to steal the secret of the Mediterranean Sea.
