Abstract:

The article discusses why and how SKAM, as a public service production, has become a success. The article presents two interconnected challenges for public service broadcasters today. The first challenge pertains to the fact that young people in particular turn away from traditional television; the second challenge relates to the concept social media logic, a logic that is largely incompatible with public service logic. The article presents a discussion on how SKAM has met these challenges. The article focusses mainly on its Danish reception. Through SKAMs thematic emphasis, the series offers its intended audience (young people) a contemporary guide to Nordic values. Furthermore, its transmedial distribution has engaged a large audience of people who are otherwise moving away from traditional public service content.

Abstract:

The article discusses strategies for creating presence in space and time in SKAM, in particular the way the series unfolds as event and its extended use of close-ups. Moreover, the article discusses Bolter and Grusin’s understanding of immediacy and argues that the many mobile screens as well as the series’ cross-mediality, or hypermediacy, contribute to the creation of an impression of being close to the characters and their world, in time and space.

Abstract:

In hyposmotic medium, skate erythrocytes swell and then lose taurine and other solutes with obligate water to achieve a regulatory volume decrease (RVD) over a 90-min period. The skate erythrocyte anion-exchanger isoform 1 (skAE1) participates in the RVD, and increased surface expression after hyposmolality-induced volume expansion occurs within 5 min but decreases to baseline within 120 min. The subsequent fate of skAE1 is the focus of these studies. SkAE1 sent to the surface becomes monoubiquitinated, a modification that is present while skAE1 is associated with clathrin and Rab5 but is removed before skAE1 is passed to the Rab4 compartment. Endocytosis of skAE1 involves clathrin-mediated internalization. Surface plasma membrane skAE1 forms tetramers and demonstrates increased tyrosine phosphorylation, and both of these processes decrease before skAE1 appears in the Rab5 compartment. Volume expansion-stimulated surface skAE1 comes from an intracellular pool in a buoyant membrane fraction resistant to nonionic detergent extraction (DRM), and the amount of skAE1 increases in this buoyant DRM fraction on the surface. Clathrin heavy chain is found largely in the erythrocyte DRM, but in dense, rather than buoyant, fractions. Rab5- and Rab4-containing membranes are largely detergent soluble, suggesting that as skAE1 is passed to clathrin and then to Rab5 compartments, the membrane microdomain composition changes. The present studies demonstrate that skAE1, which appears on the surface after hyposmolality-induced volume expansion, is monoubiquitinated, a modification that may serve as a signal for removal of skAE1 from the surface. This modification is eliminated after clathrin-mediated removal of skAE1 in a membrane domain containing Rab5, potentially permitting recycling and reuse of skAE1.

Abstract:

Abstract Background Spindle and kinetochore associated complex subunit 1 (SKA1) is an essential component of SKA complex, which is required for the proper formation of kinetochore–microtubule attachment and timely mitotic progression. The aim of this study is to perform detailed analyses of SKA1 genomic and expression alterations in cancers and to assess SKA1 as a biomarker for predicting human cancers and patient prognosis. Materials and methods Missense mutations from human cancers were extracted, deleterious missense mutations were predicted and shown on 3D SKA1 protein. SKA1 expression and the effect of SKA1 expression on patient survival were investigated in human cancers. Results and discussion Most of the predicted deleterious mutations were detected on microtubule-binding domain of SKA1, suggesting mutations on microtubule-binding domain might be more relevant in human cancers. High SKA1 expression was detected in various cancers. In addition, patients with high SKA1 expression showed poor overall survival compared to patients with low SKA1 expression in breast, lung and gastric cancers. Conclusion These results suggest that high SKA1 expression might be a prognostic and predictive biomarker for several cancers and mainly mutations in the microtubule-binding domain of SKA1 might have a deleterious effect for SKA1.

Abstract:

Aim. Spindle and kinetochore-associated protein 1 (SKA1) is one subtype of SKA, whose protein can make spindle microtubules attach steadily to the kinetochore in the middle of mitosis. At present, there are fewer researches on the relationship between SKA1 expression and tumor development.Methods. In this study, immunohistochemical analysis was used to determine the expression of SKA1 in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and adjacent tissues. We used quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot analysis to further verify the results.Results. We found that SKA1 expression was significantly higher in PTC tissues than normal adjacent tissues(P<0.05). There existed a significant correlation among a higher SKA1 expression, including lymphoid node(P=0.005), clinical stage(P=0.015), and extrathyroid invasion(P=0.004). Survival analysis showed high SKA1 expression in PTC patients more likely to relapse after surgery.Conclusion. High SKA1 expression is predictive of poor prognosis of PTC, implying that SKA1 may be a promising new target for targeted therapies for PTC.

Abstract:

Since Aristotle’s time, menstruation has been a stigmatised bodily fluid. It has been a source of shame and guilt for women for centuries. In this article, I focus on how Scandinavian artists since the 1970’s have contributed to make menstruation public through menstrual art. There is wide diversity within Scandinavian menstrual art. Some artists address the menstrual stigma directly in their work, while others use the semiotic and symbolic power of menstrual blood – as abject – to provoke and raise political awareness on feminist issues. I focus on menstrual art in relation to notions of shame and guilt. I argue that menstrual art has contributed to reducing destructive menstrual shame amongst Scandinavian women, even though this may not have been the artists’ main intention in creating the work. Even though the menstrual stigma has been reduced drastically – especially the last five years – menstrual shame has not disappeared. Thus, menstrual art can still contribute to reducing and preventing women from feeling ashamed of their periods. As long as half of humanity menstruates one-third of their life time, the menstrual discussion and menstrual art will remain topics of interest and importance.

On January 30 2018, the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, hosted a symposium entitled “Sproget i og omkring SKAM” (“The language in and around SKAM”). Abstract:

År 2016 vann den norska Tv-serien Skam Foreningen Nordens språkpris på grund av sin förmåga “[...] til å engasjere et ungt nordisk publikum, styrke forståelsen av skandinaviske språkvariasjoner og bygge opp positive holdninger til nabospråkene i Norden”. Men i vilken grad stämmer då detta? Denna uppsats har genom en enkätstudie i tre högstadieklasser i Uppsala undersökt niondeklassares norska ord- och läsförståelse, norska språkbruk och vilka attityder de har till Norge och norskan. Svaren har satts i förhållande till deras uppgivna konsumtion av tv-serien Skam. Resultaten bekräftar Foreningen Nordens påstående om Skams effekter. De som sett Skam har som grupp bättre norsk ord- och läsförståelse, använder till viss del norska ungdomsslang och har mer positiva attityder till Norge och norskan. Undersökningen har även visat att de informanter som inte talar svenska hemma eller som både talar svenska och ett annat språk hemma överlag har sämre norsk läsförståelse än de informanter som bara talar svenska hemma. Denna skillnad i språkförståelsen finns dock inte bland de informanter som sett Skam oavsett deras språkliga bakgrund. Uppsatsen har även ett didaktiskt perspektiv då den undersöker hur Skam kan användas i skolans norskundervisning i svenskämnet.

Abstract:

The goal for this study has been to examine how sexual interactions are portrayed in the norwegian Webb and TV-series Skam. It has been done by studying different elements that are included in a scene with sexual interaction. The scenes has been studied with semiotic content analysis from a multimodal perspective. Other theroies that has been important for this study is the triangular theory of love and a theory about the meaning of music for the in narrative media. The study aims to examine the content, the portrayal and the what message it could give the viewers of Skam. Furthermore the series outplays on several internetbased social platforms, and therefore the viewer comes closer to the characters and gets more absorbed in their lives. The result shows that sexual interactions occurs mostly between persons that is a part of a realationship based on love. Therefore the couple has built a storng emotional bond before they engage in intercourse. Which mostly occurs without verbal communication and therefore there’s music in the scene which can guide the viewer. As the series goes on the characters experienses both positive and negative sides of sexual interactions, as a result the viewer gets a more nuanced perspective about how sexual interactions can play out.

Abstract:

Denna undersökning hade för avsikt att granska relationen mellan skam och vuxenanknytning. Både skam och anknytning har genom tidigare forskning visat sig vara arbetsmodeller som grundläggs tidigt i människors liv och som påverkar vår självuppfattning, självkänsla och hur vi relaterar och fungerar med andra människor. Dessa inre modeller förblir relativt stabila under vår livstid. Med hjälp av självskattningsformulär mättes deltagarnas anknytningstyp och deras upplevelse och hantering av skam. Resultaten visar på en signifikant skillnad mellan anknytningskategori och självrapporterad nivå av skamuppleverser. Trygg anknytning och otrygg/avvisande anknytning uppger lägre poäng på skamskattningsskalan ESS medan otrygg/ängslig och otrygg/upptagen uppger högre poäng på skamskattningsskalan ESS. Detta ger stöd åt tidigare forskning som gjorts om anknytning och skam. Ytterligare forskning behövs, kvantitativ och kvalitativ från olika vinklar, för att få en djupare förståelse för dessa komplexa mekanismer mer ingående och hur det dynamiska samspelet mellan dem.
This study examined the relationship between shame and adult attachment. Both shame and attachment has in previous studies shown to be working-models whitch are made early in peoples life and which effects our self-image, selfesteem and how we relate och function together with other people.These inner working-models are relativly stable across life-span. With use of self-report, mesures of adult attachment and shame was made and the results showed a significant difference between the type of adult attachment and self-reported shame level. Secure attachment and unsecure/dissmissive attachment reported lower levels of shame in the self-reported messure Experience of Shame Scale ESS while the unsecure/fearful and unsecure/preoccupied reported higer levels of shame in the self-reported messure Experience of Shame Scale ESS. This supportes previous studies made in attachment and shame. More reaserch is needed to, in a profound way, understand these komplex mechanisms.

Abstract:

Undertexter skapade av fans, så kallade fansubs, utmärker sig ofta med att utmana de standardiserade normerna inom undertextning genom att vara friare från deras inflytande. En serie som det har skapats relativt mycket fansubs för är den norska webbaserade ungdomsserien SKAM, som fans började skapa egna undertexter till eftersom de ville göra serien mer tillgänglig för tittare från andra länder. Syftet med denna uppsats är att utföra en kvalitetsundersökning av två engelskspråkiga fansub-versioner till tv-serien SKAM. Undersökningen utfördes med hjälp av FAR-modellen, som är en modell skapad för kvalitetsanalys av mellanspråkliga undertexter. FAR-modellen bedömer kvaliteten på undertexter i tre olika områden: funktionell ekvivalens, acceptans och läsbarhet. Undersökningens resultat visar att kvaliteten på fansubs till SKAM är jämförbar med andra fansubs. Kvaliteten varierar dock en del inom de olika områdena, då båda versionerna fick sämst resultat inom läsbarhet, men presterade relativt bra inom funktionell ekvivalens och acceptans.
Subtitles created by fans, so called fansubs, are known to often challenge standardized norms in translation by being freer from their influence. A TV series that many fansubs have been created for is SKAM, the Norwegian web-based series aimed at teens, which fans started creating their own subtitles for because they wanted to make it more accessible to viewers from other countries. The aim of this paper is to carry out a quality assessment study of two English fansub versions for the TV series SKAM. The study was carried out with the help of the FAR model, a model that was created for assessing the quality of interlingual subtitles. The FAR model investigates quality in three different areas: functional equivalence, acceptability and readability. The results of the study show that the quality of the fansubs for SKAM is comparable to that of other fansubs. However, the quality varies somewhat between the different areas, as both versions had the lowest results in readability, but performed better in functional equivalence and acceptability.

Abstract:

Introduction: Shame seems to be one of our most unpleasant emotions. There are connections between shame and depression, acute stress syndrome and it is one of the main reason for committing suicide. Questions: What are psychotherapist´ views on the role of shame in the therapeutic process? Which are psychotherapist experiences when reducing shame has had a positive impact on humans well being? On the contrary what prevents us regulating shame and what are the difficulties in working with shame? Method: The study has a qualitative and hermeneutic approach and method of analysis is thematic. Five experienced psychotherapists participate. Result: Therapists have no experience of working with shame as a primary emotion. People are seeking therapy when shame is observed as anxiety or as a defence. Shame prevents us from our deep feelings as anger, sadness, love and interest etc. The non-verbal markers of shame do something with the whole personality and are close to our opinion about our self, that who I am. Discussion: The experience of shame reminds of the experience of anxiety and fear. Thereby we need to treat shame in the same way as we treat anxiety given Malan´s triangle of conflict. Otherwise the risk is high that the patient terminates treatment prematurely. The contrary to shame is that we are lovable and we need to reach that experience if we will be able to regulate shame in treatment. To achieve these, qualities as self-compassion, acceptance, non-judgemental is needed. Furthermore the therapist´ ability to create an alliance and that we start to speak about shame are important.
Inledning: Skammen räknas som en av våra mest obehagliga känslor. Skam har stor inverkan på människor och det finns samband mellan svåra skamkänslor och depression, utmattningssyndrom och självmordshandlingar. Frågeställningar: Vad är psykoterapeuters syn på skammens roll i den terapeutiska processen? Vilka är psykoterapeuters erfarenheter där skamlindring varit viktigt för patientens tillfrisknande? Vilka är psykoterapeuters erfarenhet av skamlindring som hinder för patientens tillfrisknande? Vilka svårigheter finns för att arbeta med skam i terapirummet? Metod: Studien är kvalitativ med en hermeneutisk ansats och analysmetod är temaanlys. Fem erfarna legitimerade psykoterapeuter deltar. Resultat: Terapeuterna har ingen erfarenhet att arbeta med skam som grundaffekt. Människor söker terapi när skammen yttrar sig som en ångestkänsla eller försvar. Skammen hindrar oss att känna våra djupa känslor som vrede, sorg, kärlek, intresse etc. Det finns kännetecken på skam som gör något med hela personligheten och som ligger närma uppfattningen om sig själv, det jag är. Diskussion: Upplevelsen av skam påminner om ångest och rädsla. Vi behöver därför behandla skammen på samma sätt som vi arbetar med ångest utifrån Malans affekttriangel, annars är risken stor att vi tappar patienten. På det djupaste planet är skammens motpol att vara värd att älskas och vi behöver nå dit för att verkligen lindra skammen. Det krävs kvaliteter som självmedkänsla, acceptans, icke-dömande, terapeutens förmåga att skapa allians och att vi börjar prata om skam.

Abstract:

Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka psykoterapeuters erfarenheter av kopplingen mellan skam och depression i psykoterapi. Fyra legitimerade och erfarna psykodynamiska psykoterapeuter intervjuades. Intervjumaterialet grundades på olika teman, och dessa var hur terapeuterna uppmärksammar och arbetar med skam kopplat till depression. Studien genomfördes med kvalitativ metod och tematisk analys. Resultatet visar att skam är en affekt som kan vara inkapslad i skuld och som är svår att uppmärksamma och arbeta med tillsammans med klienten. Resultatet pekar också på att affekten skam är stark, kan ha många olika ansikten och ofta är dold. Det framkommer också att om man inte kommer åt skammen så löses inte depressionen. Dessa svårigheter förutsätter att man som psykoterapeut är medveten om sin egen skam. Andra svårigheter kan vara att det finns så lite skrivet och forskat om kopplingen mellan skam och depression. Kanske är det i sin tur en anledning till att ämnet inte har så stort fokus i psykoterapeutprogrammet.

Abstract:

Skuld och skam är två begrepp där det inte råder konsensus om definitionerna. Begreppen är centrala i bland annat depressionsproblematik och utveckling av posttraumatiskt stressyndrom. Syftet med undersökningen var att undersöka hur människor upplever skuld och skam för att kunna belysa skillnader och likheter mellan skuld- och skamupplevelser. Deltagarna rekryterades till största del av snöbollsurval och bestod av 36 individer i åldrarna 20-85 år. De mest förekommande temana i både skuld och skam var att personen (1) tycker sig ha gjort en olycklig handling, (2) förklarar sig och (3) mår dåligt. I skuld var det även vanligt att personen ångrar sig och upplever sig ha svikit någon. I skam var det vanligt att personen reflekterar över sig själv, vill fly samt får uppmärksamhet. Mer forskning på området är angeläget då det i nuläget inte råder någon konsensus mellan likheter och skillnader mellan skuld och skam.

L’obiettivo del presente elaborato è proporre un adattamento di due scene tratte dalla webserie Skam España, incentrata sulle vicende di un gruppo di adolescenti di Madrid. Il focus principale della proposta di traduzione sono gli elementi dell’oralità e del linguaggio colloquiale, i quali spesso vengono eliminati in fase di adattamento (doppiaggio e/o sottotitolaggio) e sono invece fondamentali per un prodotto di questo genere. Il primo capitolo presenta la serie, concentrandosi inizialmente sulla webserie norvegese Skam, andata in onda tra il 2015 e il 2017, i cui diritti sono poi stati acquistati da numerose reti televisive europee e internazionali. Verrà fatta una breve sintesi della prima e della terza stagione, con accenni ai personaggi e ai temi principali, per poi passare a Skam España, il remake prodotto da Zeppelin TV a partire dal 2018. Anche in questo caso verrà fatta una breve sintesi delle tre stagioni che la compongono, concentrandosi maggiormente sulla seconda (da cui sono tratte le clip che verranno adattate), e una spiegazione di temi e personaggi. Infine, verranno illustrate le caratteristiche del format di Skam, che lo rendono un prodotto audiovisivo particolarmente innovativo e unico. Il secondo capitolo dell’elaborato propone un’analisi e una spiegazione del fansubbing, il fenomeno del sottotitolaggio amatoriale ad opera dai fan, parlando inizialmente delle caratteristiche tecniche che lo distinguono dal sottotitolaggio professionale e a seguire della storia e dell’evoluzione di questo fenomeno. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo propone due esempi di adattamento di scene della serie, preceduti da un breve riassunto accompagnato da un’analisi linguistica del testo originale e seguiti da un commento in cui si illustrano e si motivano le scelte di traduzione impiegate nella realizzazione dei sottotitoli. Infine, l’elaborato si conclude con un riepilogo del lavoro svolto e con la proposta di una serie di possibili approfondimenti futuri.

Abstract:

Young audiences of today live in a society of constant converging of digital artefacts and media production principles. No longer is it enough to sit back and watch a TV-show. These audiences expect to activate themselves within multiple platforms, to become active participants instead of passive spectators. For production companies to face these demands, designing transmedia storytelling is becoming essential. To create transmedia storytelling is to create a story spreading over several media channels, where every channel contributes to the storyline in its’ own manner, in order to enable a broad narrative experience. Throughout its’ combining of a series, and establishing of characters’ social media profiles, NRKs’ production SKAM has become somewhat of a success story within the transmedia field. Through qualitative analysis based on models of grounded theory, theories on convergence and participatory culture, as well as on crossmedia and transmedia storytelling, it has been stated that NRK appears to have considered every important aspect in order to develop a phenomenon well suited for audiences of todays’ expectations. By that, SKAM is well to be considered a grand example of how to shape a functioning, reputable and strikingly successful transmedia story.
