Abstract:

This article focuses on German modernism. It traces the growth of German nationalism within the larger context of European nationalism. The question pulls in two directions. First, it points toward the problem of how German modernism ought to be situated in literary and art history. No doubt the simplest, most efficient answer is that German modernism finds its place within the larger setting of European modernism. The larger European context can shed light on the specificities of the German situation, and perhaps the details of German modernism may sharpen our sense of certain aspects of European modernism. The war was catastrophic in itself for all participants, but all the more so in Germany. This article carefully explains the contribution of authors and philosophers such as Franz Kafka and Sigmund Freud towards the development of German nationalism. An inquiry into realism winds up this article.

In 1966, the Peace Corps and Tanzania, both newly established, faced a major international crisis when a Peace Corp volunteer was to be tried in Tanzania on a charge of murdering his wife, also a volunteer. This book examines how each of these entities arrived at this juncture—that is, the founding of the Peace Corps and the path to independence for Tanzania, the trial and its aftermath. Two assessors acted as jury, one a white American working in Tanzania, the other a black Tanzanian who had recently returned from graduate studies in the United States and who had been part of the famous African Airlift that brought Africans to America, including Barack Obama’s father, to study. That program, designed to undercut Russian efforts to lure Africans to the Soviet Union, foreshadowed many of the Cold War conflicts between the United States and Tanzania, including the U.S. role in the Congo, the Vietnam War, and apartheid in South Africa. The book explores how government officials, both American and Tanzanian, private attorneys, friends and relatives of the couple, and witnesses dealt with the complex situation.

Older workers are often shielded from job loss by high tenure, yet are struck particularly harshly when seeking reemployment after job loss. This article combines earlier research on coping with job loss and job search with insights on employability for older workers. We outline the situation of older workers, highlighting their vulnerability to possible job-loss and to stereotypes that may lower their perceived employability. Then we outline how this may place older workers in precarious situations regarding (a) the threat of losing their jobs, (b) suffering from loss of nonmonetary benefits (or latent functions) associated with work, (c) having different and fewer coping options than younger job-seekers, and (d) facing fewer chances of finding reemployment. Older workers face an uphill battle when searching for reemployment, which is partially explained by retirement as an alternative coping reaction to age-related stereotypes, discrimination that undermines older workers’ employability, and other factors.

Situating Sustainability reframes our understanding of sustainability through related concepts, practices, and case studies. The point of departure is the continual need to be conscious of how environmental knowledge and sustainability are issues constituted by long-standing inequalities. This book addresses the necessity in sustainability science to recognize how diverse cultural histories define environmental politics today. The differing geographic scope of this volume is joined by the disciplinary diversity of the contributors and their wide-ranging areas of specialization, bringing together researchers from cultural studies, anthropology, literature, law, behavioral science, urban studies, design, and development. As a truly transdisciplinary work, Situating Sustainability calls for research guided by the humanities and social sciences in collaboration with local actors informed by histories of place. The authors of this volume believe that situating sustainability cannot limit itself to the geographic borders of nations, epistemic standpoints, or to unmasking perspectives that falsely present themselves as objective or universal. The subject of this chapter is the relationship between the Tuscan cities and the families belonging to the middle ranks of the lay aristocracy, from the late tenth until the early twelfth century. Taking the case-study of Florence as a starting point, a comparison with other cities of the Tuscan March in the same period (Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, and Siena) will be sketched, to see that during the eleventh century we can find a similar situation in different contexts. In fact almost everywhere the ‘mid-level’ aristocracy held extensive and dispersed landholdings, many castles and private churches in the countryside, but important urban and suburban holdings as well. They established political, social, and economic connections with the primary wielders of regional power (the marquis, the counts, the bishops and other important ecclesiastical institutions) and gravitated on the cities, taking part to urban politics and probably living there some periods during the year. The situation in Florence, however, rapidly changed during the protracted crisis of the Tuscan March at the end of the eleventh and in the early twelfth centuries, when the rural aristocracy confronted a major crisis: many lineages rapidly fragmented, the splintered branches concentrated on building compact rural lordships, and they turned their backs on Florence, without playing a role in the emerging comune. But, in the same context of the decline of the March, in other Tuscan cities the separation between rural and urban aristocracies did not take place, or at least seems to have been not so stark and dramatic. Paying attention to the strength of several factors (power of the bishops, economic attraction, connections with powerful counts families etc.), different situations will be compared to reflect about the political behaviour of rural aristocracies and their degree of integration in the urban elites during the so-called ‘consular period’.

This book shines a spotlight on the lawyers, engineers, young yeshiva graduates, and sons of connected businessmen who, in the autumn of 1940, joined the newly formed Jewish Order Service. The book tracks the everyday life of policemen as their involvement with the horrors of ghetto life gradually increased. Facing and engaging with brutality, corruption, and the degradation and humiliation of their own people, these policemen found it virtually impossible to exercise individual agency. While some saw the Jewish police as fellow victims, others viewed them as a more dangerous threat than the German occupation authorities; both were held responsible for the destruction of a historically important and thriving community. The book emphasizes the complexity of the situation, the policemen's place in the network of social life in the ghetto, and the difficulty behind the choices that they made. By placing the actions of the Jewish Order Service in historical context, the book explores both the decisions that its members were forced to make and the consequences of those actions. Featuring testimonies of members of the Jewish Order Service, and of others who could see them as they themselves could not, the book brings these impossible situations to life. It also demonstrates how a community chooses to remember those whose allegiances did not seem clear.

This chapter describes ways Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem use Christmas music to highlight the contrast between the former peaceful “little town” in the carol and the current situation of its population under Israeli occupation. An annual Christmas event is staged as a protest, but promotes nonviolent resistance to occupying forces. Organizers provide an opportunity for the expression of shared feelings of belonging and loss among local Palestinians, but are keenly aware that such emotivity can generate conflict and aggression. For this reason, the music at the festival is performed rather than participatory, and features lyrics celebrating nonviolence and peace, promoted as both Christian and universal moral values, alongside allusions to lost territories and the restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities. By drawing on repertoires of wide dissemination across the Christian world on a main Christian holiday, the event also draws international attention to the Palestinian cause.

This volume brings together a series of case studies of spatial configurations of power among the early medieval societies of Europe. The geographical range extends from Ireland to Kosovo and from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean world and brings together quite different scholarly traditions in a focused enquiry into the character of places of power from the end of the Roman period into the central Middle Ages. The book's strength lies in the basis that it provides for a comparative analysis of the formation, function and range of power relations in early medieval societies. The editors' introductory chapter provides an extended scene setting review of the current state of knowledge in the field of early medieval social complexity and sets out an agenda for future work in this topical area. The regional and local case studies found in the volume, most of them interdisciplinary, showcase detailed studies of particular situations at a range of scales. While much previous work tends to focus on comparisons with the classical world, this volume emphasises the uniqueness of early medieval modes of social organisation and the need to assess these societies on their own terms.

This chapter examines the statutory grounds for governmental access to private-sector data in Korea. It focuses on issues such as the circumstances under which access is allowed without a warrant and how unjustified government access can take place in practice. Systematic government access to private-sector data can take place through warrants issued by a court. Notably, due to the unique truce situation, under which the Republic of Korea is technically still at war with North Korea, Korean authorities are sometimes allowed to obtain private-sector data without warrants, for national security purposes. This chapter examines the statutory grounds for governmental access to private-sector data in Korea, focusing specifically on issues such as the circumstances under which access is allowed without a warrant and how unjustified government access can take place in practice.

5150: On Unethical Privacy is an autobiographical piece where Matthew Reynolds recounts the situation wherein he was involuntarily committed shortly before his 21st birthday. He describes the situation that led to his psychotic break, and the problems his parents had, who he is very close to and have had a large place in his treatment. He was incapable of informed consent and, after being tranquilized, due to his manic depression, he slept for 36 hours wherein neither his parents, physician, psychiatrist, or anybody else were contacted. Finally, his main moral dilemma is discussed. He highlights just what went wrong ethically based on his own memory of events, which he learned of during and after his involuntary committal. His main argument is: “what use is a psychotic patient’s undeniable rights to privacy, if he is incapable of helping himself?” He notes how these systems backfired throughout.

A quarter of the world’s reef system is already dead, and a further half is affected to varying degrees. ‘Doing something about it’ proposes two groups of measures to address this situation. First, the overall human impact on reefs, such as fishing intensity and pollution, needs to be managed. Second, some protected marine areas need to be demarcated, instead of all areas being used in sourcing food in haphazard and decreasingly effective ways. This would mirror systems already in place on land. The continued rise in the worldwide human population has put additional pressure on the reefs as a place to procure food. This means that reef degradation is no longer a just a scientific problem, but is now also a political and social one.

Early research on intergroup contact in social psychology had a clear social change agenda. Authors like Clark and Allport directly addressed themes of power and inequality as they studied the effects of contact to support desegregation activism in the United States. During the subsequent decades the focus on inequality, power, and social change was replaced with the quest for a generalized theory of prejudice reduction. This chapter shows how this change in focus took place; it considers the ways in which some contact research continues to ignore social justice concerns today; and it reflects on the effects of this focus. Finally, the chapter sketches—in broad outline—a model of the way intergroup contact functions to reproduce social situations and the experiences of people who participate in these situations.

Most clinicians would agree that confabulation is always accompanied by amnesia and lack of insight. But is this true? Do confabulating patients really need to have a gap in memory? This chapter explores the complex relation between confabulation and amnesia, disorientation, and false recognition and compares it with disorders provoking false statements about the current situation, the place, people, or one’s own health status, as it happens in disorders such as déjà vu, reduplicative paramnesia, Capgras and Fregoli syndromes, intermetamorphosis, and anosognosia. Elegant recent experiments have revealed a new mechanism of anosognosia for hemiplegia, but its status among confabulations remains disputable.

This chapter submits that investor-state arbitration faces a common core set of problems that tribunals hearing these claims must resolve. Commentators of, and participants in, investor-state arbitration typically submit that there is only one rule of evidence: the free appreciation of evidence by the arbitrator. Given the ubiquity of the sentiment that there are no rules of evidence in investor-state arbitration, this chapter first attempts to examine where this perceived wisdom has gone wrong. This premise starts from a foundational coincidence of the who, what, how, and why of the decision-making process involving states and foreign investors. The coincidence explains why principles could form in the first place, given the role of the process participants, the subject matter of the process, and the operations of the process, as well as its constitutive values.

Laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic surgical procedures are commonly used in both urology and gynaecology. These minimally invasive techniques result in early mobilization and short hospital stay and robot-assisted operations are increasingly favoured by patients and surgeons. A complex physiological response is created by the combined effects of carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum, elevated intra-abdominal pressure, and sometimes a profound Trendelenburg position. Healthy patients tolerate this situation well, but compromised patients are at risk of developing heart failure, ischaemia, or both. Correct interpretation of vital signs can be challenging in this situation. This chapter gives an overview of the physiology during laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery and gives recommendations for anaesthesia and monitoring. The field of urology and gynaecology also includes major open surgery as well as transurethral surgery and techniques for the management of urinary tract stones. The anaesthetic management and perioperative care of major open surgery, including the increasingly adopted ‘enhanced recovery after surgery’ concept, are also covered. The syndrome of transurethral resection of the prostate can still place patients at risk despite increased knowledge and improved selection of irrigation fluid.

Abstract:

Chapter Five proceeds from to the transnational character of prostitution and situates it in an analysis of labour migration and labour exploitation. Instead of projecting on the migrant sex worker the collective images that are driven by radical feminist and anti-immigrant ideology, we argue that is it more effective to take seriously what the sex workers told us over and over again: that the migrant sex worker’s self-understanding of prostitution is work, a discerning occupational choice in a situation in which thousands of female migrants find themselves worldwide. This reframing of prostitution as a legitimate occupation draws attention to the continuity of the situation of sex workers with that of other migrant groups, to the exploitative labour arrangements these new migrants encounter in the arrival country, to the third parties they mobilise to find housing and a work place and navigate immigration law, and to the negative effects – usually a breach of the human rights of (migrant) sex workers-of the very laws and regulations that are intended to support them. The authors explore six positive effects on prostitution policy by adopting a labour exploitation framework.

This chapter outlines the institutional displacements and disenfranchisements of Durban's street youth population. It follows their movements from shelter to shelter as they attempt to establish a semblance of stability in a precarious situation of state-sanctioned evictions and arrests. One of these shelters is Thuthukani, a children's street shelter located in the metropolis of Durban. The chapter also discusses the centrality of Point Place as a viable yet problematic housing option for older street youth and females. In this sense, it sets up the overarching narrative of the study, in which the youth look to each other to mitigate the hardships of their urban poverty.

Ce volume donne la parole à toutes les voix qui représentent les patois de Suisse romande aujourd’hui. Elles proviennent de trois groupes, qui, habituellement, évoluent sans se croiser. Tout d’abord, les associations de locutrices et de locuteurs incarnent la parole vivante, qui devient de plus en plus rare et menace de disparaitre faute de transmission. Les responsables politiques, fédéraux et cantonaux, relaient ensuite la parole officielle : celle des institutions qui encadrent et protègent les langues minoritaires en Suisse, pays officiellement plurilingue. La parole scientifique, finalement, est portée par des linguistes, des sociolinguistes et des dialectologues, qui présentent leurs projets de recherche autour de ces langues. Rassemblées dans un même ouvrage, ces voix, complémentaires, offrent un panorama de la situation actuelle des langues francoprovençale et oïlique de la Suisse romande. L’avenir de ces langues historiques repose, en grande partie, sur les actrices et les acteurs qui s’expriment ici. Leur témoignage décrit les rencontres, les spectacles, les projets culturels, scientifiques et pédagogiques qui se déploient, en Suisse et dans les régions voisines de France et d’Italie. Les patois investissent aussi la sphère numérique, impératif de notre siècle. Null subjects (NSs) have been a central research topic in generative syntax ever since the 1980s. This chapter considers the situation of German NSs both from a dialectological and from a diachronic perspective and attempts to reconstruct a direct line concerning the licensing conditions of pro-drop from Old High German (OHG) through Middle High German (MHG) and Early New High German (ENHG) to current dialects of New High German (NHG). Particularly, we will argue that German changed from a consistent, yet asymmetric pro-drop language to a partial, but symmetric one. In order to demonstrate that this development took place and the steps involved, we survey the existing empirical evidence and introduce new data.
