Abstract:
This chapter emphasizes the need for research that is designed and implemented explicitly with dissemination in mind. This is illustrated in relation to environmental and policy initiatives to influence physical activity through active transport, and through the example of initiatives to reduce workplace sitting. The other element of this chapter, the broad-reach intervention-dissemination case study of a health behavior-change program, highlights the need to maintain key elements of research quality in designing for dissemination, to the extent that is practically possible: a rigorous study design; the systematic tracking of implementation and related costs; and, the conduct of dose-response, maintenance and cost-effectiveness analyses. These examples of designing for dissemination illustrate not only the exciting opportunities for real-world dissemination research, but also the resourcefulness and commitment required for success.

Bakan, Michael B. Zena Hamelson. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190855833.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
When we first meet ten-year-old Zena Hamelson, she is sitting in a chair staring blankly at the wall, flapping her hands, repeatedly straightening and bending her legs, compulsively twisting and pulling on her fingers as her Artism Ensemble bandmates make joyful music all around her. Zena is stimming, that is, she is practicing a personal repertoire of self-stimulatory behaviors that align precisely with the symptomatic profile of her diagnosed autism spectrum disorder: Asperger’s syndrome. Stimming, autism researchers tell us, is associated with some dysfunctional system in the brain; its reduction or elimination is a target goal of many therapeutic interventions and autism studies. Yet as the chapter unfolds, Zena’s stimming is revealed as something else entirely: a meaningful mode of music-making, creative expression, and social experience unto itself.

Surbeck, Martin, and Gottfried Hohmann. Affiliations, aggressions and an adoption: Male–male relationships in wild bonobos. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198728511.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature of the relationships between males is a characteristic trait of many multi-male group living species with implications for the individuals. In our study population of bonobos, certain male dyads exhibit clear preferences for ranging in the same party and sitting in proximity. These preferences are not reflected in the frequency of aggression towards each other and only to some extent in their affiliative and socio-sexual behaviours. While bonobo males at LuiKotale clearly do not benefit from close relationships in the way chimpanzee males do (cooperative hunting, territorial patrol, mate competition), some relationships might result from close associations between their mothers. In some particular situations, these male relationships can be very important as in the case of an orphan adopted by his older maternal brother.
