Abstract:
The purpose of a quarry is to extract rock material to deliver gravels, cement and asphalt to its customers. These products are important input to the construction and maintenance of road infrastructure, buildings and more. The operation of quarry and road work sites is similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the factory, the quarry and road work processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput in real-time. Some sites control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason.   This thesis investigate how Lean thinking utilizing real-time control and wireless communication can be used to improve productivity and safety in the operation of quarry and road construction. The main overall contribution is the identified operational improvements, its use cases, the system design constraints and challenges as well as assessed impact in productivity, energy efficiency and safety if introducing wireless real-time control to the site operation.   The results include the presentation and demonstration of a developed method based on Lean value stream mapping, for identifying wastes in sequential processes and activities including mobile machines. Further it investigates the performance and evaluates how the latest developments of wireless communication and vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET) can be utilized within the quarry and road construction operation. The main system requirements and constraints are identified and the tradeoffs and gains in terms of system design, communication coverage, energy consumption and safety for the identified use cases are presented.

Norskov, Eriksen Line. "Utzon : travel thinking making travel studies as a site for creative-critical formation in architecture." Thesis, University of Portsmouth, 2018. https://researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/utzon(5799c05f-eaf7-4f49-b464-e1d47fe3b12d).html.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a historical and critical analysis of how the travel praxis (c. 1947-1959) of Danish architect Jørn Utzon (1918-2008) influenced the intellectual trajectory of his approach to architecture. Hence, this thesis examines his travels in North Africa, Europe, North America, Central America, the Far East, and Middle East, as he sought to recast anew an understanding of the levels beneath the superficial stylistic tropes of different civilizations, redeeming, as it were, transcultural architectural principles of how people respond to place, lying beyond the periodicity of history. In the existing literature, it is already well established that Utzon’s travel studies were not only critical to his own work, but historically significant for the course of the Modern Movement during the post-war period. Yet, his travel praxis has only been superficially reviewed, largely because of a previous lack of primary source evidence. In 2012, new research possibilities emerged, as Utzon’s family made significant parts of Utzon’s personal archive collection, from his life and work as an architect, available for research. Using inductive grounded theory as a methodological framework, this thesis offers the first extensive analysis of such material. Key findings are: Utzon’s travels were not just tied to personal, artistic agendas, but were a critical form of study that evolved gradually over the course of his formative period and underpinned his approach to architecture. Namely, it is argued that his travel praxis may be characterised as a process of integrating existential perceptions in an experiential manner. Both trajectories are grounded in a belief that architecture does not lend itself well to overly academic studies or distant observation and emphasise the study of architecture by means of a detour that accentuates the human forces and conditions – land, people, and time – that brought it into being. At the same time, this juxtaposition of an experiential approach with existentialism indicates an almost ontological stance, which places ‘profoundly being’ at the heart of the discipline. Finally, these findings are used, not only to deepen our understanding of Utzon’s oeuvre, but as an opportunity to engage with a wider perspective on the relativity between critical travel praxis and intellectual and creative identity formation, asserting the continued relevance of transcultural studies in contemporary architecture.

Abstract:
People with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum, comprise the world's largest minority and experience significant inequities in Internet use. Existing standards for accessible web sites are necessary but not sufficient without the direct engagement of end users in identifying access needs. Yet little is known about methods for effective engagement, and there are no systematically derived Web accessibility guidelines for autistic end users. Here I explore a hybrid approach to direct engagement using critical systems thinking (CST) and community based participatory research (CBPR) during the co-development of a healthcare-focused web site by the Academic Autism Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE). I explore these ideas on three levels: theory, practice, and critical self-reflection. On the theory level, I examine the common philosophical and historical roots of CST and CBPR, ways in which they intersect and complement, and propose the hybrid approach exemplified by AASPIRE. On the practice level, I explore our web site development process and evaluate the accessibility, usability, and acceptability of the web site for autistic end users; from that work, comes a set of recommendations for working with people with disabilities in technology development and a set of accessibility guidelines for autistic end users. On the critical self-reflection level, I inquire into my own experiences as an insider-researcher during the web site development. I then synthesize the levels to evaluate whether or not taking a hybrid CST/CBPR approach to web development was effective, as indicated by the team's ability to function as an emancipatory learning organization (an indicator of effective systems thinking on an organizational level), and the overall usability and accessibility of the web site. The result of the synthesis suggests a hybrid CST/CBPR approach was effective. Implications of this work include innovations in CST methods for operationalizing its commitment to human emancipation, potential for drawing a more ideologically-aligned systems thinking literature into the domain of CBPR, a means for individuals wishing to create a more power-balanced learning organization, innovations around including people with disabilities in research and technology development, more accessible web sites for people on the autism spectrum, and a potential small shift of dominant discourse around autism, disability, and the value of insider-researchers over time.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University
This study seeks to contribute to our understanding of the problem of effectively encouraging historical thinking by (a) evaluating, and modifying Wineburg's heuristics for historical thinking for applicability to the problem-solving activities historians use at historic sites; (b) establishing the efficacy of a hypermedia-based education program Tories, Timid, or True Blue? at the Old North Church in Boston, Massachusetts, for encouraging historical thinking in middle- and high-school teachers (c) determining the amplifying effect that the combination of the use of multiple documents and the historic site from which they are derived ha on historical thinking. Results suggest that this combination of activities does lead teacher users to reason in ways that suggest more sophisticated historical reasoning. However, considerable attention is paid to the way in which historians and teachers think differently about the historic sites they encounter and how the overlaps therein might be used a the foundation for encouraging effective partnerships between historians and teacher a co-equal partners in improving history education.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to discuss ways to open up the brief in designing for extreme environments, such as intensive care units and remand prison. Focusing on „designials‟ (fundamental forms of design being), the methodology intends to illustrate that things; objects may directly impinge on certain „existentials‟ (fundamental forms of human being). Moreover, the method is a form of critical design enabling designers to shift focus from “analysing the functionality of a design in use” (Torkildsby 2012, p. 18), e.g. by performing a functional analysis, to “analysing the form of being human that a design in use defines” (Ibid), and more importantly, what may happen if we do not – thus the “dark side” of design thinking. Here I am outlining the existential designial analysis in a design manual and further discussing, through the context of a fictive dialogue, How, Why and When it can be applied to the design of these environments.

Harman, Kerry. "Re-thinking workplace learning : worker subjectivity/ies as sites of alignment and resistance /." Electronic version, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/542.

Abstract:
University of Techology, Sydney. Faculty of Education.
The concern of this thesis is the way workplace learning is able to be known and spoken about and the effects of the contemporary privileging of an experiential learning discourse in the workplace. Following an analytic method outlined by Foucault, I explore a field of multiple and mobile force relations between professional developers, trade teachers, workplace learning academics, senior managers, organisational consultants and organisational learning theorists, and the purposes to which discourses of workplace learning might be put. The research site for the study was a recent industry-university collaboration that explored workplace learning in a large public sector organisation. Using various organisational texts including: interview transcripts from workers participating in the industry-university research project, documents produced during the project, documents produced by a Professional Development Unit (the industry partners on the project), and academic texts on organisational learning, I examine the circulation and intersection of different workplace learning discourses. I also examine the positioning, position taking and resistances around the subject position of ‘the workplace learner’ in a workplace. A number of Foucauldian themes guide the analyses in this thesis including: power as multiformed, power as relational, the distribution of power, multiple subjectivities, and subjectivity as a site of resistance. This enables an examination of workplace learning discourses as instruments of power, but also as providing points of resistance. This thesis makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the fields of organisational learning and workplace learning by foregrounding complex mechanisms whereby technologies of power interplay with technologies of the self. These citings/sitings/sightings of power and subjectivity have implications for professional development practices and the ‘management’ of workplace learning, as well as the practices of workplace and organisational learning researchers.

Lemos, Helena Maria Roennau. "The dark side is the bright side, in Robinson Crusoe : a transdisciplinary reading of Daniel Defoe's novel." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/7922.

Abstract:
This study proposes a twenty-first-century reading of Robinson Crusoe, by British writer Daniel Defoe, aiming to identify the reasons why the story of the castaway who lives on an uninhabited island for 28 years has remained remarkably popular in the Western world for almost three centuries. The reading is a drill on Complex Thinking, as defined by French epistemologist Edgar Morin, one of the pillars of Transdisciplinarity. This approach consists of the identification of patterns and interrelationships among elements inside the text and elements external to it, in the light of a number of disciplines involved in the study. Complex Thinking connects empirical/logical/rational knowledge to symbolic/mythological/magical wisdom. The study starts with a review of the career of the book, considering the founding texts which might have influenced the creation of Robinson Crusoe, and the myriad of mimetic texts that followed its publication, giving birth to a literary subgenre, the Robinsonade. A glance at the life of Defoe is also offered, so as to illustrate the context of a European world of radical scientific, political and social changes. Contexts and the critical heritage of the work are put together with symbolic data that prove relevant for the research on the imaginary inscribed in the novel. Chapter three acknowledges the aid of a number of studies in the fields of philosophy of science, analytical psychology, mythology, anthropology and religion, which enabled me to interrelate diverse levels of reading. Chapter four offers my transdisciplinary reading of Robinson Crusoe, in which I endeavor to demonstrate that the continued popularity of the novel derives from its capacity to convey concealed meanings connected with elements constitutive of the Imaginary of the Western world.

Tu, Wendy. "Designing for Statistical Reasoning and Thinking in a Technology-Enhanced Learning Environment." NSUWorks, 2014. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/10.

Abstract:
Difficulties in learning and understanding statistics in college education have led to a reform movement in statistics education in the early 1990s. Although much work has been done, there is more work that needs to be done in statistics education. The progress depends on how well the educators bring interesting real-life data into the classroom. The goal was to understand how course design based on First Principles of Instruction could facilitate tertiary-level students' conceptual understanding when learning introductory statistics in a technology-enhanced learning environment. An embedded single descriptive case design was employed to investigate how integrating technology and real data into a tertiary level statistics course would affect students' statistical literacy, reasoning, and thinking. Data including online assignment postings, online discussions, online peer evaluations, a comprehensive assessment, and open-ended interviews were analyzed to understand how the implementation of First Principles of Instruction affected a student's conceptual understanding in a tertiary level introductory statistics course. In addition, the teaching and learning quality (TALQ) survey was administered to evaluate the teaching and learning quality of the designed instruction from the student's perspective. Results from both quantitative and qualitative data analyses indicate that the course designed following Merrill's First Principles of Instruction contributes to a positive overall effectiveness of promoting students' conceptual understanding in terms of literacy, reasoning, and thinking statistically. However, students' statistical literacy, specifically, the understanding of statistical terminology did not develop to a satisfactory level as expected.

Abstract:
The built environment in the old city of Homs has been brutally destroyed by the conflict in Syria. The research gap in post-conflict planning and architectural design in the old city of Homs is alarming as it indicates that there are no clear roadmaps on how to deal with post-conflict housing units in such a historic area. This study aims to investigate the possible design basis of housing typologies and plans for the housing units in the old city after the conflict. This study is primarily based on a literature review and extensive discussions with a specialist architect from the city of Homs, who helped to gain a deeper understanding of how to approach such a topic. The literature review deals with the historical Arab cities’ components and the elements of courtyard houses both in general and in the old city of Homs in particular. Likewise, it looks at the city’s urban plans and building code and their shortcomings and highlights the current conditions there. It also highlights proposed strategies for post-conflict construction and discusses them. The findings of the study propose a design ideology for reconstruction strategies and translate these ideologies and findings from the literature into a practical design of typologies placed on a proposed plot of land in the old city, along with a proposal of what the plans of these houses might look like.

Collins, Matt. "The emotional side of breakthrough innovation." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2015. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/9696.

Full text
Abstract:
Breakthrough innovations are vital for the global economy and even our survival as a species. They appear as creative leaps and insights without obvious connection to existing knowledge and are extremely valuable to organisations, giving them significant competitive advantage. Historiometric and psychopathological evidence shows that breakthrough innovations are often associated with individuals and affective dysfunction; yet innovation today is widely held to be an organisational phenomenon operationalised though a model of creativity based on positive affective experiences and group activities which may be particularly unsuited to innovative thinkers. Research upon which the current paradigm for creativity and innovation are based is detached from real world outcomes and has been challenged as to its validity. Little data exists outside of experiments or indirect observation of naturally occurring affective experiences and the mood-creativity-innovation link has yet to be proven; we still know very little about how breakthrough innovations occur. This unique study addresses this significant gap in innovation research with a two-year longitudinal case study of a breakthrough innovation being developed for a multi-national Fast-Moving Consumer Goods company. It followed the journey of a lone innovator and attempts to answer the research question: “Can a fear of failure lead to breakthrough innovation?” The innovation space was investigated from three perspectives: technology, organisation and innovator, to build a picture of the highly immersive and emotionally charged experience of innovating. Many new insights were gained, and with extensive support from literature, new tools for the management of technology and the interface between innovators and organisations were developed, along with ground-breaking research into the mood-creativity innovation link. These are delivered through a series of four journal papers. The key finding from this research has been the discovery of the innovation-wave, a phenomenon which for the first time provides evidence for the mood-creativity-innovation link; intimately connecting real-world creative efficacy with emotion and specifically a ‘fear of failure’. From this finding a new theory and psycho-cognitive model for a distinct form of creativity called innovative thinking, driven by negative affect (mood) and specifically suited to achieving a breakthrough innovation through overcoming apparently insoluble problems, was posited and a hypothesis proposed and tested using a sophisticated innovation simulation developed especially for this purpose. Evidence from the case study and later experiment provide support for the research question and the lone innovator. This study makes a unique contribution to our understanding of creativity and innovation which could have a significant impact on how both are researched, taught and managed in the future. Being able to understand and possibly manipulate the innovation-wave, if proven correct, could be vitally important for maximising the potential for creating breakthrough innovations to the benefit of us all.

Albannai, Talal N. "Conversational Use of Photographic Images on Facebook: Modeling Visual Thinking on Social Media." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849631/.

Full text
Abstract:
Modeling the "thick description" of photographs began at the intersection of personal and institutional descriptions. Comparing institutional descriptions of particular photos that were also used in personal online conversations was the initial phase. Analyzing conversations that started with a photographic image from the collection of the Library of Congress (LC) or the collection of the Manchester Historic Association (MHA) provided insights into how cultural heritage institutions could enrich the description of photographs by using informal descriptions such as those applied by Facebook users. Taking photos of family members, friends, places, and interesting objects is something people do often in their daily lives. Some photographic images are stored, and some are shared with others in gatherings, occasions, and holidays. Face-to-face conversations about remembering some of the details of photographs and the event they record are themselves rarely recorded. Digital cameras make it easy to share personal photos in Web conversations and to duplicate old photos and share them on the Internet. The World Wide Web even makes it simple to insert images from cultural heritage institutions in order to enhance conversations. Images have been used as tokens within conversations along with the sharing of information and background knowledge about them. The recorded knowledge from conversations using photographic images on Social Media (SM) has resulted in a repository of rich descriptions of photographs that often include information of a type that does not result from standard archival practices. Closed group conversations on Facebook among members of a community of interest/practice often involve the use of photographs to start conversations, convey details, and initiate story-telling about objets, events, and people. Modeling of the conversational use of photographic images on SM developed from the exploratory analyses of the historical photographic images of the Manchester, NH group on Facebook. The model was influenced by the typical model of Representation by Agency from O'Connor in O'Connor, Kearns, and Anderson Doing Things with Information: Beyond Indexing and Abstracting, by considerations of how people make and use photographs, and by the notion of functionality from Patrick Wilson's Public Knowledge, Private Ignorance: Toward a Library and Information Policy. The model offers paths for thickening the descriptions of photographs in archives and for enriching the use of photographs on social media.

Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Institutionen för samhällsvetenskaper, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-19454.

Abstract:
There is a lot of research and literature on how design, both aesthetic and strategic, can be applied in practice as a communication tool. However, the research and literature does not clarify whether the application of design as a communication tool is industry specific or generally valid for all types of companies. Companies can use design as a communication medium to communicate their brand identity to consumers, so that their view of the brand image becomes equated with the brand identity. If they succeed, the company reaches a strong brand. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and compare how companies in different industries can use design, in the form of aesthetic and strategic design, with the intention to communicate their brand identity to its consumers and to create a strong brand. The thesis is qualitative in nature and consists of individual interviews and focus groups. The individual interviews and focus groups were conducted with key persons from selected companies, their design partners and their customers. The collected data were analysed using a modification of the Corporate branding model and other, more specific, models and theories as a theoretical framework. In the final discussion the authors compare if the use and effect of aesthetic and strategic design as a communication tool differ between companies in different industries, and whether the fact that they operate in different industries has an effect. The use of strategic design and design thinking was different, since the service company (Sturehof) used it consistently, while the product company (Svenskt Tenn) didn’t reach out with communication through design thinking. The effect was not compared since the use differed. The use of aesthetic design differed little between the various companies, but the effect differed more. The authors' explanation for this is that consumers do not set equally high standards and expect the same degree of aesthetic design in a restaurant as they do at a furniture store. Design of a product company in the interior decorating industry was considered as a natural concept, but design of a service company in the restaurant industry was considered a competitive advantage. In conclusion, the authors mean that this thesis demonstrated that design, regardless of industry, should be used in its entirety with both strategic and aesthetic design to achieve a strong brand.

Abstract:

This pilot study aims to test how recommended methods to promote students’ metacognitive thinking can be used. Metacognition is about “learning how to learn” and is related to conceptions like feedback, self-regulation and formative assessment. Research shows that students that get training in metacognition increase their performances. One of the goals according to the Swedish Curriculum for the compulsory school, preschool class and the recreation centre 2011/2017 is that students shall develop the ability to assess their results. I have examined how students in grade seven answer and apprehend metacognitive questions in the compulsory subjects Art and Swedish. The students answered metacognitive questions at three different times: when planning, when carrying through and when evaluating the task. In connection to answering the questions they also answered a questionnaire about their conception of the metacognitive questions. The intention is to use the result of the pilot study to prepare for a larger study. A qualitative research method has been used in this study. The result show that it’s substantial that the teachers find out about the students different preunderstanding of the metacognitive questions. The majority of the students find the metacognitive question useless, but for different reasons. If the students don’t understand the questions they think that the questions are something in addition to the task. If the students have a high metacognitive preunderstanding they will consider the questions as redundant. Most students thought that the metacognitive questions took time from the task they were supposed to do. Some students expressed great dissatisfaction, big frustration and irritation over the questions. To be able to train metacognitive thinking methodically with desired effect the students have to be motivated. A key factor is that the students understand what the training is supposed to leading. The teacher has to work in different ways with different groups of students with this.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study offers a comparative analysis of Rosario Castellanos' Balún-Canán and Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, novels that provide examples on how children construct their identity in hybrid communities in southeastern Mexico and the U.S. southwest. The protagonists grow and develop in a context where they need to build bridges between their European and Amerindian roots in the middle of external influences that complicate the construction of a new mestizo consciousness. In order to attain that consciousness and free themselves from their divided selves, these children receive the aid of an indigenous mentor who teaches them how to establish a dialogue with their past, nature, and their social reality. The protagonists undertake that negotiation by transgressing the rituals of a society immersed in colonial dual thinking. They also create mechanisms to re-interpret their past and tradition in order to create an image of themselves that is not imposed by the status quo. In both novels, the protagonists have to undergo similar processes to overcome their identity crises, including transculturation, the creation of sites of memory, and a transition from orality to writing. Each of them resorts to creative writing and becomes a sort of shaman who pulls together the "spirits" from the past, selects them, and organizes them in a narration of childhood that is undertaken from adulthood. The results of this enterprise are completely different in the cases of both protagonists because the historical and social contexts vary. The boy in Bless Me, Ultima can harmoniously gather the elements to construct his identity, while the girl in Balún-Canán fails because of the pressures of a male-centered and highly racist society.

“Construction cost” is that every investor wants to minimize; on the other hand, every investor wants to maximize “net profit”. Hence, it is valuable to study how to achieve “minimum construction cost and maximum net profit”. Many studies focus on reducing the cost but their approach and analysis are not on the base of real practice on the construction site. This research aims to employing site experience of the researcher and the survey of expert’s interview to understand the effective factors in reducing the cost to a reasonable level. The questionnaire includes the following information: A. The management of the construction company; B. The control of the volatile basic-unit labor; C. Cost of execution. This study uses Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) tool as the method to analyze the collected thirteen cases. It shows that the effective factors in reducing the cost. The results are arranged in the order of effectiveness: 1. The establishment of prompt and the effective reward system; 2. The separation of power of the company and the work-site purchase from the human resource office, but under a centralized control; 3. Cautious selection of contractors, who can grow with the company; 4. An authoritative budget system; 5. The control of personnel in an effective scale to reduce labor cost; 6. The collaboration among the departments of construction, purchase, and sales; 7. The improvement of working conditions and work morale to encourage effective work; 8. The establishment of strategic alliance under the principles of the scale of the cases; 9. Within a reasonable scope, the reduction of work schedule to reduce the management cost; 10. The training of laborers in technical work to achieve the goal of the division of labor. The first effective factor, “the establishment of prompt and the effective reward system” shows 0.4618 in AHP. The second in line, showing 0.3370 in AHP, is “the separation of power of the company and the work-site purchase from the human resource office, but under a centralized control”.

Five elements are based on the I-Ching theory, which considers nature to be composed of five elements. With the rise and fall of the five elements, nature has changed, and it will make the universe circulate. This study combines the systems thinking perspective of five elements to construct the tea site design of the tea art. The design is based on the five elements and the color representations they represent, and they are used to grow each other to form a tea site design. At the same time, the operational process and case verification are constructed. The results of the study show that the construction of the operational process ensures that the operations are in line with practical needs. The user can grow the tea site design in an easy to understand and simple way with the principle of five elements of mutual growth.

This study research is intended to discuss my works from 2002 to 2005 and the process of creation from the viewpoint of “site, selection, ingression.” From this multiple and wider perspective, I hope to take a close look at the genuineness of the current society as a site in order to throw some insights from what I have learned. The main research methods employed in this research are interpretative analysis, introspective analysis, comparative analysis, and art practice. Through the theories and practice interaction, the style and content of the artist’s work is interpreted and the viewpoint of creation “site, selection, ingression” is formulated. Chapter Two is mainly about basing. The nature of the creator is examined in different perspectives. The concept of “site” is to reflect on by employing varied perspectives of the behavior, condition, and issues of the creation. Chapter Three discusses the idea of selection and ingression and the relevant issues involved in contemporary art to test and verify the arguments I proposed in my art. In Chapter Four, the focus is placed on the interpretation of my work and process of creation. By introducing social, aesthetic, philosophic, and art psychological theories, a comprehensive analysis is carried out to discuss the issue of art creation; the practical experience of the artist’s creation process also helps to test and verify the interaction between creation viewpoint and the hands-on art creation process. My recent works tend to focus on the discussion of events and space, using analogic device to transform motionless pictures, videos, and object arrangements into unique, putting into play, and interactive forms. Such approach is indeed a footnote which records my observation of the changing society and reflects the real world. In addition to the analysis and interpretation of the viewpoint—site, selection, and ingression, I hope that, by putting my own work in this research, I can help to bring life and new ideas to the viewpoint of site, selection, and ingression so that Taiwan’s modern art field can play a role in relevant discussions of social site.

Jakovljevic, Maria. "An instructional model for teaching complex thinking through web page design." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/4395.

Abstract:
D.Ed.
Teaching and learning in the Technology Education and the Information Technology learning area traditionally focused on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes and reproductive thinking - with minor reference to the facilitation of complex thinking. An appropriate instructional methodology in the Higher Education and Training band is of utmost importance due to the fact that current instructional approaches and strategies in the Information Technology area of learning are not suitable for the facilitation of complex thinking. There are no instructional models for the facilitation of complex thinking through web page design available in South Africa. The cross-curricular nature of Technology Education and Information Systems permits the integration of the stages of the technological process and methodologies of information system design with particular reference to web page design. The problem-based nature of information system design correlates with the aim and functionality of the stages of the technological process. Within the stages of the technological process the balance between constructivist and behaviourist instructional approaches and strategies can provide for meaningful learning. The aim of this study is to design and implement an instructional web design programme (IWDP), and furthermore on the basis of an evaluation of the programme, to develop a prospective instructional model that could promote complex thinking in the project-based classroom. The development of the instructional programme was based on the three pillars of the technological framework (mind tools within web page design, complex thinking, instructional models and strategies), which provided a conceptual framework in the form of criteria on the manner in which complex thinking of learners can be facilitated. This study was developed within the qualitative research paradigm. The use of the case study design and action research was considered the most appropriate for the nature of this study. A group of 17 learners at an institution of higher education and training band was observed during the implementation of the instructional programme. Data was gathered using interviews, classroom observations, journals and essays, in order to explore learners' and the teacher's experiences in respect of the instructional programme. A qualitative data analysis approach was employed to provide meaningful categories and subcategories. From the data it was evident that the learners and teacher had positive experiences with regard to the instructional programme. The programme provided an array of instructional approaches and strategies, as well as the opportunity for learners to experience a multi-method learning environment utilising the technological resources and a network of human resources inside and outside the project-based classroom. It became clear that different instructional approaches and strategies (constructivist and behaviourist) contributed to a variety of learning modes particularly emphasizing discussions, cognitive apprenticeship and peer tutoring in collaborative teams, indicating the facilitation of complex thinking in general. Based on the findings an instructional model was designed and developed that could be applied in the Information Technology learning area, as well as in Technology Education in general.

Full text
Abstract:
The term "young adults" is often used loosely without a clear definition of who this demographic is. This study defines young adults by examining generational differences, their beliefs, uses and nonuses of media, news interests, wants, values for following the news, and expectations and reading experiences of news stories. The uses and gratifications approach and expectancy-value theory provided a framework for this study. Three methodological approaches were used: a secondary data analysis of three national surveys, focus groups and an experiment. The secondary data analysis findings showed the youngest age group (18-24) is leading the new news routine online with news aggregator sites, major and local news sites. The two youngest age groups (18-24 and 25-29) differ from each other and older age groups in their worries, goals, perspectives, beliefs, news interests, media uses, nonuses and political knowledge, and should be studied separately. Stances on social issues and technology are not as clearly defined by age. The findings suggest one's life stage is behind some of the differences. Since no published study to date has conducted focus groups exclusively with nonreaders of print newspapers ages 18-29 to examine their news consumption and nonuses of print newspapers, the present study broke new ground. The findings showed these young adults want searchable, effortless, shorter, more local, accessible anytime news. Both groups (18-24 and 25-29) wanted less negative news, but the younger group justified crime coverage. A few younger group participants expressed a difficult time reading the news and a bias in coverage, especially politics. The experiment used storytelling devices in an attempt to make news writing more digestible, interesting, relevant to young adults' lives, and informative. The findings showed "chunking" text improved perceived comprehension. The device of adding background information, context and a definition improved text recall. The experiment also examined expectations that young adults have prior to reading hard news. For a politics story, experimental group participants expected to understand the story less and have less of an interest than they did. Using these findings, this study suggests ways to get more of this audience (18-29) to tune into the news.

There are rare studies referred to how to set goal more effectively in systemic view. The purpose of this article will articulate how to set a goal in order to strive for the level of life. 2nd, it will show us what a healthy person is and how to be. 3rd, trying to use the method of systems thinking to improve the quality of goal setting and to make good decisions. The upper level of goal is mentioned about what we live for. In this article we will explore what dose life mean and the specific norms of value system from the perspective of philosophy, especially in the moral choices of self-actualized person and the tests of energy level by Kinesiology. Finally, there are three conclusions by using the systems archetypes as a carrier: 1.Hold on the life goal: always allocate a certain ratio of resources to life goal to avoid being eroded by other objectives. 2.Take value system into consideration: goal setting should be guided by value system, and also take other’s goal into account. 3.Choose the fundamental solution: adopt transformational learning as the fundamental solution to assist in goal setting in order to strive for the level of life of human being.

White, Katherine. "Looking on the bright side : downward counterfactual thinking and coping with stressful life events." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/14931.

Full text
Abstract:
Past research on counterfactual thinking suggests that downward counterfactuals are not frequently generated in response to negative events. An interrelated set of 5 studies examined whether, and under what conditions, people generate more downward than upward counterfactuals in response to stressful life events. Study 1 found that those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome generated more downward than upward counterfactuals regarding their condition. Study 2 found that, in response to the events of September 11th, people tended to generate more downward than upward counterfactuals, particularly when they were motivated to make themselves feel better. In Study 3, in which motives were manipulated, those motivated by self-enhancement generated more downward counterfactuals than those motivated by self-improvement or those given no motives. Furthermore, European-Canadians (who are presumably more motivated to feel good about the self) generated more downward counterfactuals than Asian Canadians. Study 4 found no significant difference between the number of upward and downward counterfactuals recalled for mild vs. severe negative events. Once again European-Canadians generated more downward than upward counterfactuals, whereas Asian- Canadians did not demonstrate this tendency, providing further support for the notion that those who are motivated to feel good about the self generate more downward counterfactuals. These cultural differences in counterfactual thinking were more pronounced in response to severe than mild negative life events. Moreover, participants reported less negative moods, more positive moods, and more affect-regulation motives associated with downward counterfactuals than with upward counterfactuals. Finally, in Study 5, those who were not given the opportunity to affirm important values generated more downward than upward counterfactuals, whereas those who completed a selfaffirmation task did not demonstrate this tendency. Taken together, the results advance our understanding of downward counterfactual thinking in response to stressful life events, and suggest that this tendency is related to the desire to repair moods and see the self in a positive light.

O'Connor, Linda Kathleen. "Weight-based Stigma and Deficit Thinking about Obesity in Schools: How Neoliberal Conceptions of Obesity Are Contributing to Weight-based Stigma." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/30101.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines weight-based stigma in schools, and examines body size as an issue of difference, subject to discrimination, from within a critical democratic framework. I raise a paradox when it comes to dealing with the issue of obesity; we don’t want to say that weight is within individual control, however, we don’t want to say obesity is outside individual control and nothing can be done to affect it. Neoliberal conceptions of obesity in Western countries are highly individualistic, and blame obese individuals for failing to adhere to social norms. This leads to deficit thinking about obese individuals, wherein a group of students are seen as inherently deficient. Turning to Freire’s conception of ethics, which calls for respect for all students, it becomes clear that conceiving of a group of students as inherently deficient is unethical. This then renders the neoliberal conception of obesity unethical. I then offer pedagogically and ethically sound alternatives to current practices.

Abstract:
This report sets out the trajectory of projects carried out by Michelle Fernandes Runge to create and renovate 3 sites of the JAZZY group companies to obtain a master's degree in the Design Management course at IADE University. The work started in April 2019 with the start of the first project in September 2019 and ended in August 2020. During the development of the project, the student had the opportunity to work in practice several of the knowledge acquired during the master's degree at IADE, parallel studies and previous information acquired in external courses in Web Design, Digital Marketing and university degree in Visual Communication. The purpose of these projects was to create new websites for some of the group's companies and events, which would solve the various navigation, information problems and have a greater presence in the search engines. Like any major project, new complications and needs came across making the websites grow and, also, there were needs to create a website and system for an event and a digital school, a need that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemia in March 2020. In general, the way to reach the final results was to find a connection between design and Dance and Fitness, core areas of the group, to seek ways to value these areas and make them capable of creating strong emotional bonds between the consuming public and the company's business. Visual and informational aspects will then be analyzed, and strategies will be developed using User Experience, Design Thinking, Emotional Design and User Centered Design to achieve customer loyalty through ease of navigation, search for information, establishing emotional connections, adding value to the products of JAZZY.

Nowadays, there is a tendency towards using performance system in most of corporations and organizations. Up to now, scholars research are only focus on how to formulate the performance system, key measurable indicators, how to quantify, the relationship of performance system and staffs’ efficiency, key performance indicators, the advantages of performance system, the precautions of performance system and so on. However, the side-effects of performance system are obvious and there are few research study on this part. This research uses literature collection method and interviews method to collect and understand that performance system affect on some insurance company.

This research aims to expose the convergence between the management and the design evidenced by Design Thinking as a strategic and innovative tool to increase value to the services. Best (2010) states that design management is a leadership role, a role that requires one to explain, inspire, persuade and to demonstrate how design can contribute to the organization in many different ways. This is intrinsically linked to the business, so that both can add as create value. According Ruão (2008), intangible assets, such as identity, image, reputation or brand, have become increasingly important in higher education institutions management. In this sense the relevance of the research is justified by the pressing need of the strategic restructuring sector companies against the backdrop of the current crisis. Given this new context in which the Higher educations institutions entered a situation said "market", where sustainability now requires a more entrepreneurial orientation, the intangible factors emerge as very valuable elements. The field of analysis of this study comprises the convergence of design and management as a strategic lever in the service sector, particularly in the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança. Theoretically, the work addresses the issues related to management design, design thinking in services, corporate identity and image. The case study focuses on Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, ascertaining as design management can contribute strategically to understand what the weaknesses and the institution's design requirements and turn them into competitive advantage, as well as investigate the perception that the staff has its identity corresponds to the image perceived by your audience (students). The main results allow to conclude that in general the IPB presents a positive Corporate Reputation for the attributes of the image under study (Website, Visual Identity, Advertising and Environment). It is possible to verify the existence of differences in the perception that the Staff has of their identity and the image perceived by the Students, which allows to realize what actions the organization can have in the sense of aligning its Corporate Reputation so that it is perceived in a way positive which has negative points.

Goal setting theory has been developed over nearly half a century, which is widely used in business, government, education, non-profit organizations etc. However, corporate scandals and business crisis continue to happen in recent years. People began to think and ask whether the business performance goals leading enterprises toward danger and decay? For this question, Latham &; Locke who building goal setting theory think that this question’s causes is the interference of external factors. Ordóñez et al. think that this question’s causes is the systematically side effect of goal setting theory. This study collected information about practical application of a case study of a hypermarket which implement goal setting by interview survey. There are three problems related with goal setting from the interviews: (1) the goal inhibited managers’ motivation of working hard; (2) the manager applied a symptomatic solution or a more fundamental solution in achieving goal; (3) narrow focused on their own goal and caused a negative side effect to others, then harmed Organization''s overall performance. It all depends on your choice, which decided your state of mind and how to deal with these three problems. It was found that two respondents have very different approach to the same problem in the interviews. After analysis, it was found that the goal setting theory is just a necessary condition of the problems. Human factors and the way subordinates achieving the goal is another necessary conditions. In order to achieve the goals setting by managers, subordinates choose to apply the symptomatic solution which produces side effects. In the short term they solved the problem symptom. In the long term they make bigger problems. When we face a problem symptom, we have to make choice between symptomatic and fundamental solution. The “shifting the burden” archetype tells us the fundamental solution is always on the slow, difficult and hard way.
