Abstract:
The chapter opens with a categorization of the Western Wall as a “thick site.” Echoing Geertz’s “thick-description” approach, this new concept denotes a site typically but not necessarily religious, which is loaded with different and incompatible meanings attributed to it by different agents. From these agents’ perspective, such meanings are highly significant, and consequently, these sites are irreplaceable. This conceptualization elucidates the most important characteristics of contested sacred sites, enabling a classification of the struggle of the Women of the Wall within a larger “class” of similar struggles and indicating possible solutions. Basic concepts that are necessary for illustrating the contours of the discussion are defined: “state,” “religion,” and “public sphere.” The chapter concludes with a detailed discussion of the contextual research methodology chosen for this study.

Clarke, Noel W. Metastatic disease in prostate cancer. Edited by James W. F. Catto. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199659579.003.0068.

Abstract:
Metastases are the predominant cause of morbidity and death from prostate cancer (CaP). The tendency for cells to migrate from the primary site, enter the vascular/lymphatic circulation, and implant/grow at secondary sites is the principal discriminator of aggressive form indolent disease. But this process is poorly understood. Cells enter the circulation in increasing number as the disease progresses, impinging on endothelial surfaces, particularly in red bone marrow where they bind and transmigrate, forming early cell colonies. This requires chemo-attractants and nutrients enabling cellular survival. Established metastases thrive independently, disrupting local tissue, as characterized by progressive replacement of red bone marrow and disruption of skeletal architecture. Bone disruption includes massive overstimulation of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts, inducing synchronous over-production of abnormal bone and gross osteolysis.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how efforts to corral network systems and services for the purpose of increased profitability introduced a new chapter in the geopolitics of information—one marked by intensifying struggles over control of the extraterritorial internet and of the industries that continued to pyramid around it. More specifically, it describes the emergence of extraterritorial internet connectivity as a site of sustained political contestation. It also explains how internet connectivity had been woven into the global political economy, enabling new commodities, altering state policy, and revamping the ways in which ordinary people worked, played, and communicated. It also considers rival efforts to shape the destiny of the overall political economy and U.S. capital's influence over both domestic and many transnational markets through preemptive appropriations of internet connectivity and an assertively helpful state.

Howe, Justine. Building the Webb Community. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190258870.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the suburban religious landscape, educational networks, and narratives of the American Muslim past out of which the Webb community emerged. It demonstrates how the suburbs are a vital site to study broader dynamics in the American Muslim community. At its heart, the Webb Foundation is built on the idea that the Chicago suburbs can be the ideal place to practice Islam. Its core membership consists of young parents who are very committed to upper-middle-class norms of intensive parenting, such as supervising homework, shuttling kids between after-school activities, and maintaining an active presence in their social lives. The American Islam they seek to create fits into these constructions of family life, enabling children and adults alike to become American Muslims in ways they believe earlier generations were either unable or unwilling to be.

White, Robert E. Soils for Fine Wines. Oxford University Press, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195141023.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, viticulture has seen phenomenal growth, particularly in such countries as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Chile, and South Africa. The surge in production of quality wines in these countries has been built largely on the practice of good enology and investment in high technology in the winery, enabling vintners to produce consistently good, even fine wines. Yet less attention has been paid to the influence of vineyard conditions on wines and their distinctiveness-an influence that is embodied in the French concept of terroir. An essential component of terroir is soil and the interaction between it, local climate, vineyard practices, and grape variety on the quality of grapes and distinctiveness of their flavor. This book considers that component, providing basic information on soil properties and behavior in the context of site selection for new vineyards and on the demands placed on soils for grape growth and production of wines. Soils for Fine Wines will be of interest to professors and upper-level students in enology, viticulture, soils and agronomy as well as wine enthusiasts and professionals in the wine industry.

Abstract:
Anthropology has neglected the study of music. Music and Digital Media shows how and why this should be redressed. It does so by enabling music to expand the horizons of digital anthropology, demonstrating how the field can build interdisciplinary links to music and sound studies, digital/media studies, and science and technology studies. Music and Digital Media is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the digital assume clamouring audibility. The book contains ten chapters, eight of which present comprehensive original ethnographies; they are bookended by an authoritative introduction and a comparative postlude. Five chapters address popular, folk, art and crossover musics in the global South and North, including Kenya, Argentina, India, Canada and the UK. Three chapters bring the digital experimentally to the fore, presenting pioneering ethnographies of an extra-legal peer-to-peer site and the streaming platform Spotify, a series of prominent internet-mediated music genres, and the first ethnography of a global software package, the interactive music platform Max. The book is unique in bringing ethnographic research on popular, folk, art and crossover musics from the global North and South into a comparative framework on a large scale, and creates an innovative new paradigm for comparative anthropology. It shows how music enlarges anthropology while demanding to be understood with reference to classic themes of anthropological theory.

Craddock, Emma. Living Against Austerity. Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529205701.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
With austerity’s disproportionately heavy impact on women now apparent, this engaging book considers activism against it from a feminist perspective. Emma Craddock goes deep inside activist culture to explore the many cultural and emotional dimensions of political participation. She questions what motivates and sustains protest, considering the enabling aspects of solidarity and empathy, as well as the constraining factors of negative emotions and gendered barriers associated with activism, examining the role of gender and emotion within protest. This is a lived-in study that gets to the heart of what it means to be an anti-austerity activist and an important addition to social justice debate. The book is organised into four parts. The first part establishes the theoretical and empirical context; the second part explores the enabling and constraining factors of political participation (‘doing activism’); the third part discusses the two main activist identity constructions in the local anti-austerity activist culture and the ‘dark side’ of activist culture that these feed (‘being activist’); the fourth and final part provides concluding remarks about the ambivalence of anti-austerity activist culture and the difficulty of resisting such a pervasive force as neoliberal capitalism.

Abstract:
There are more specialized applications of SAXS and SANS which require specific experimental considerations. This chapter covers size exclusion chromatography which has proven to be useful to study both soluble and membrane bound proteins allowing the study of samples that show time and concentration dependent dynamics. It also describes iime-resolved techniques for SAXS and in a few cases, SANS. Finally, with improved X-ray sources, detectors, sample handling, and compute power, the ability to perform SAXS data in high-throughput is available. This is discussed in enabling the use of SAXS to study protein interactions, map macromolecular conformation, and rapidly characterize samples amongst other applications.

Trimble, Jennifer. Communicating with Images in the Roman Empire. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780195386844.003.0007.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how the size, diversity, and connectivity of the Roman Empire in the first centuries CE fostered developments in image communication in a civilization in which levels of visual literacy, especially among city populations, should be considered quite well developed. At the same time, a full grasp of a monument’s iconography was not essential for effective communication at a range of levels. A remarkable, seemingly modern phenomenon of the period is the proliferation and stability of image use, enabling complex, varied interplays of empire and place to be articulated in all segments of society, with or without the involvement of the authorities.

Abstract:
Advertising strategically reroutes media, popular culture, values, and social relations to create new meanings housed within commodity-signs. Chapter Three addresses this recontextualization of cultural and social meaning through an intertextual analysis of dance in advertising, examining how advertising employs dance through quotation, allusion, and parody. Detailed analyses of several examples demonstrates how correspondence and difference produce affect and contribute to viewers’ pleasure by enabling a proliferation of meanings. Thus ads offer the opportunity to look closely at advertising’s participation in the ongoing construction of meaning in popular culture. The chapter introduces the concept of nostalgia without memory and demonstrates how textual borrowings or appropriations reveal the cultural relevance of dance-in-advertising as sites of production that engage in a rewriting of cultural histories.

Deshpande, Ashwini. The Dividend of Diversity for India’s Corporate Sector. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198812555.003.0018.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues the normative case for greater diversity in the workforce of private corporations in the specific context of caste disparities in India. It offers evidence from the literature which indicates a positive association between profits and more diverse workforce teams as well as management boards for large firms. This suggests that ensuring greater diversity, in addition to enabling social inclusion especially of marginalized groups, would make good business sense. However, the discussion on diversity might be more relevant to large corporations. Small and micro-enterprises that are owned and populated by members of marginalized groups might face discrimination on account of their identity, adversely affecting their performance. This indicates that discrimination based on social identity manifests itself in different ways in different segments of the market depending on the size of the firm.

Abstract:
Chapters 3, 4, and 5 examine empirically why markets for corporate control expanded even though incumbents resisted exposure to competition. The British case, presented in Chapter 3, illustrates the doubly self-reinforcing feedback effects of market-enabling takeover rules. Even in Britain, rules conducive to takeover bids did not emerge until after World War II. The first regulatory blow to the entrenched position of corporate insiders was dealt not by shareholder-oriented market liberals, but by stakeholder-oriented parties to their left. Marketization was an unintended side-effect eagerly snatched up by incumbents’ symbionts, namely merchant banks, who abandoned their former allies to become profiteers. Marketization gathered speed not only because the pro-market clienteles grew, but also because opposition waned as competition intensified. I attribute this to feedback effects of marketization on the power resources, attitudes, and behavior of politically relevant groups, including institutional investors, bankers, managers, and trade unions.

Abstract:
Because of their complex structures and cultures characterized by interaction among multiple professional and occupational groups with diverse sources of authority, expertise and legitimacy, health care organizations are prime sites for forms of collective or plural leadership. In this chapter, we describe and provide empirical examples of four different forms of plural leadership occurring in and around health care organizations. The presentation of the various forms and their empirical illustrations reveals that different situations may call for different forms and modalities of plural leadership both inside and across these organizations. However, a common theme underlying all the examples and forms is the paradoxical importance of individual agency in enabling the construction of effective forms of plurality. We conclude by discussing some of the challenges associated with these forms of plural leadership and by identifying areas for future study of their role and effectiveness in health care settings.

Barrett, Chris. Milton’s Paradise Lost and the Atlas of Violence. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816874.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Like Faerie Queene and Poly-Olbion, Milton’s Paradise Lost interrogates the essential meaning-making structures of poetry, using the enabling, distortive logics of cartography to think the work of representation. This chapter considers the ways the map’s origin as product of the military arms race haunts Milton’s epic, and how the poem probes the map’s tendency to disrupt the figurative structures on which poetry relies. Space, consciously framed for discursive consideration, defies the poem’s dominant use of simile and analogy, and the disruptions posed by the landscapes in Paradise Lost destabilize the figurative language that should contain violence within the poem—but fail, at sites of represented terrain, to blunt the materialization of corporeal injury. The poem triangulates figurative language, violence, and the topographical representation, such that the representation of terrain often accompanies the transformation of figurative injury into material damage, a perversion of the poem’s penchant for turning metaphor into concretion.

Cavanna, Andrea E. Behavioural Neurology of Anti-epileptic Drugs. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198791577.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Behavioural Neurology of Antiepileptic Drugs is the first clinically oriented reference book on the use of antiepileptic drugs with a focus on their behavioural effects in both patients with epilepsy and patients with primary psychiatric conditions. This book provides a pocket-sized guide to assist neurologists in the use of antiepileptic drugs when treating patients with epilepsy and associated behavioural problems. Psychiatrists treating patients with affective, anxiety, and psychotic disorders will also find this compendium on the behavioural aspects of antiepileptic drugs as a useful tool for their clinical practice. The book is organized alphabetically by antiepileptic drug for easier information gathering, enabling physicians to use the text as a standalone reference in busy clinical settings, such as specialist epilepsy clinics or general psychiatry ward rounds. Particular care was taken in covering the breadth of medications used in modern epilepsy and psychiatry practice, including each drug’s indications, contra-indications, side-effects and important interactions. The underlying pharmacology is also presented to provide a quick refresher and background on the underlying mechanisms. Practical aspects related to prescribing and therapeutic drug monitoring are covered following the most up-to-date evidence based guidance. Each drug monograph closes with a section providing a visual rating in terms of antiepileptic indications, behavioural tolerability, interactions in polytherapy, and psychiatric use, again drawing on the existing evidence. A selected reference list is included to provide readers with the primary sources for clinically-relevant information presented in a concise way within each chapter.

Armstrong, John. The Vital Spark. Liverpool University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5949/liverpool/9780986497308.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book collects seventeen previously published essays by John Armstrong concerning the British coastal trade. Armstrong is a leading maritime historian and the essays provided here offer a thorough exploration of the British coastal trade, his specialisation, during the period of industrialisation and technological development that would lead to modern shipping. The purpose is to demonstrate the whether or not the coastal trade was the main carrier of internal trade and a pioneer of the technical developments that modernised the shipping industry. Each essay makes an original contribution to the field and covers a broad range of topics, including the fluctuating importance of the coastal trade and size of the coastal fleet over time; the relationship between coastal shipping, canals, and railways; a comparison between the coastal liner and coastal tramp trade; the significance of the river Thames in enabling trade; coastal trade economics; maritime freight rates; the early twentieth century shipping depression; competition between coastal liner companies; and a detailed study of the role of the government in coastal shipping. The book also contains case studies of the London coal trade; coastal trade through the River Dee port; and the Liverpool-Hull trade route. It contains a foreword, introduction, and bibliography of Armstrong’s writings. There is no overall conclusion, except the assertion that coastal shipping plays a tremendous role in British maritime history, and a call for further research into the field.
