Abstract:
The objective of this investigation is to determine whether student site location in an instructional videoconference is related to students' motives for communicating with their instructor. The study is based, in part, on the work of Martin et al. who identify five separate student-teacher communication motives. These motives, or dimensions, are termed relational, functional, excuse, participation, and sycophancy, and are measured by a 30-item questionnaire. Several communication-related theories were used to predict differences between on-site and off-site students, Media richness theory was used, foundationally, to explain differences between mediated and face-to-face communication and other theories such as uncertainty reduction theory were used in conjunction with media richness theory to predict specific differences. Two hundred eighty-one completed questionnaires were obtained from Education and Library and Information Science students in 17 separate course-sections employing interactive video at the University of North Texas during the Spring and Summer semesters of the 2001/2002 school year. This study concludes that off-site students in an instructional videoconference are more likely than their on-site peers to report being motivated to communicate with their instructor for participation reasons. If off-site students are more motivated than on-site students to communicate as a means to participate, then it may be important for instructors to watch for actual differences in participation levels, and instructors may need to be well versed in pedagogical methods that attempt to increase participation, The study also suggests that current teaching methods being employed in interactive video environments may be adequate with regard to functional, excuse-making, relational and sycophantic communication.

Abstract:
The use and practice of infographic restitutions in the field of built-up material vestiges has always been an important foundation in research and scientific experiments. This thesis questions the role of digital models from the excavation to representation of research results. The main body of this thesis cornes from interviews with and discussions of several groups of experts. Research in the field of archaeological and virtual reconstruction of ancient buildings gathers researchers from a variety of professions and possessing different sets of skills. Among them, professional abilities of three groups (the architect, the archaeologist and the IT expert) have been discussed. For the public, the virtual reconstitution of digital models using computers can guarantee and lead to a suitable representation in exhibitions. This thesis is based on four approaches: a bibliographic approach, interviews with experts, a public survey and the analysis of case studies. Suggestions which may improve the nnultidisciplinary work are: to utilise results from source analysis, conduct interviews and surveys to understand the expectations of each nominated groups, finding the possible ways of interacting between these experts and proposing the potential solutions. We are interested in aligning the expectations of those expert groups through these digital models. These approaches will also involve the use of digital models in the form of representation and museum devices in exhibition spaces. In this context, the concept of digital model can lead to the basis for exchange and communication of ideas

Our work aims at studying websites as the substantial objects of the Web universe. Our approach yields from an analysis of websites contents, from the point of view of their material form and of the complex mediations that emerge among users, the medium and content publishers. The thesis is articulated along the following axes : questioning the nature of the « website object » in its relation to the communication partners ; observation and analysis of the transformations induced by the Web to the conditions of sense production ; observation of the way the transformations of institutional positions and of mediations with respect to the Web productions are expressed. In particular, we investigate the metaphor-based mechanisms that arise involving website designers' strategies, users' practices and medium proprieties

Abstract:
Despite the economic recession there is still demand for foreign labour in the UK construction industry. This presents many construction management problems, not least is the communication barrier. Some research examining the extent of the language barrier within the construction industry has been undertaken. Several of these studies have advocated the use of images as a means of communicating with site operatives who have little English. Other studies have actively created communication material for use in site health and safety communications. The author's research contributes to this existing body of research by exerting a stronger focus on the source -channel - delivery. Furthermore, the research was unique in that it addressed the contribution that the presenter of the communication exerted on the audience, in terms of knowledge gain and perception. The aims of the research were: to determine how images currently used within the industry are understood by site operatives of varying cultural background and language proficiency; ~ how comprehension of site specific information following an induction using images compares to inductions without images; and how the presenter of site inductions can influence audience perception and knowledge gain. An exploration into the nature and extent of the communication problem was conducted via interviews and site visits. A series of tests were then developed and piloted before '? conducting preliminary comprehension testing. Observations of site inductions were then undertaken to assess presenter credibility. Feedback from site operatives was elicited using a likert scale. Finally, knowledge gain was assessed by asking operatives open questions regarding site specific information. Qualitative analysis highlighted that health and safety images currently in use are often misinterpreted by non English speaking operatives, but, simple design changes can drastically alter comprehension toward the intended meaning. The credibility assessment method indicated that it was sensitive enough to differentiate between differences in credibility, but further development of the instrument is required. The final stage of analysis revealed that more information was transmitted to receivers when using pictorial inductions compared with text based inductions.

Abstract:
The analysis of advertising messages in the cameroon, particularly through television, has highlighted the problems of transferring messages or concepts between different cultural environments. This thesis, founded on the logical cultural needs of advertising, offers a model of advertising communication which remains true to the cultural needs of the cameroon while maintaining universal truths. A questionnaire on the receptivity of the cameroonian public to avertising, and a comparative semiometric study of the cameroonian and french public, which combination is at the core of this work, has revealed a socio-cultural profile of the cameroonian public. It has also brought to light the need to adjust advertising strategies aimed at this public. The results show a realisational, concrete and pragmatic psychology according to which advertising communication in the cameroon is multifaceted, with features both individual and society-based, as seen in the socio-cultural aspects prevailing in the given society and environment : on a rational level, the subject incorporates phatic and emotional dimensions. Tendencious laws have been suggested and are considered to be the condition necessary to insure a communication adapted to the cameroonian public

Abstract:
Despite thirty published evaluation reports citing the effectiveness of Vancouver’s safe injection site (Small 2008), the Canadian federal government refuses to endorse safe injection sites as a health service option available to injection drug users (IDUs). Insite’ s evaluation results are undergoing debate, because two communicative spheres of knowledge, each with a unique authoritative language, are conflicting as each is attempting to gain moral authority over the right to recontextualize drug users. Drawing on a literature review of two harm reduction programs in Vancouver, Insite and Sheway, and expert interviews with evaluators, I show that what constitutes “evidence” is in fact subjective, determined by spheres of communicability that are built upon social, professional and political contexts. To confront the problematic nature of this issue, I suggest that evaluators and overseers need to treat program evaluation as a process of negotiation, best approached in a fluid manner. By obscuring multiple user experiences in the evaluation of harm reduction programs, evaluators and overseers risk imposing their communicative ideologies on what it means to be a drug user.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to create a communication interface which insures that all the right hardware is in its right place in the IS-node before Ericsson AB delivers it to their customers. One of the first parts of this work was to make sure it is possible to create such an interface for IS. This thesis then explains how to construct an interface that retrieves information from the IS-node into a C#-application. One important part of this project was to collect information and transform it to an XML output with the purpose of then being used in other applications in the future. The application created within the scope of the thesis exports the information retrieved from the IS-node in an XML-file or a text-file. Its communication interface delivers the right information retrieved from the node. Through this application it is therefore possible compare this information to the order specification and make sure that Ericsson AB delivers the right hardware in the node.

Abstract:
AFor few decades, product design process became a prior factor for enterprises. Their organizations have to be more efficient to enhance product cost, time to market and quality. Traditional seqential engineering is no more efficient, then principles of concurrent engineering appears to fit perfectly with the competitive context in industry. Concurrently, extended enterprises raised with economic globalization. In this context, development of Information Technologies exploded to support the needs of such organizations and methodologies

Lin, Rui. "Archimedean Screw Turbine Based Energy Harvester and Acoustic Communication in Well Site Applications." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/104385.

Abstract:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has become increasingly important in the Oil and Gas industry. Despite the various advantages WSN has compared to the wired counter parts, it also faces some critical challenges in the oil fields; one of them is the power supply. The periodic replacement of batteries for the WSN in the downhole environments has been economically inconvenient and the enormous cost induced by the maintenance has turned people's attention to the energy harvesting technology, hoping for a more sustainable solution. Power supply is only half of the problem. To retrieve the data recorded by the various sensors in the downhole environments, a reliable way of wireless communication is required. A new approach utilizing acoustic communication was proposed. This thesis presents an Archimedean Screw Turbine (AST) based energy harvester that takes advantage of the abundant flow energy in the upper stream section of the oil production cycle, especially in the water injection wells and oil extraction wells, with the goal of providing power supply to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and underwater acoustic modems deployed in the various locations in the downhole environments. Parametric study on the number of blades, screw length, screw pitch, and rotational speed was conducted through CFD analysis using Ansys Fluent in order to determine the optimal geometry and operating conditions. The relationship between power generation and AST geometries, such as AST length and AST pitch, were discovered and the optimal rotational speed was revealed to be solely dependent on the screw pitch. Experiments were conducted in the lab environment with various flow rates and various external resistive loads to verify and determine the maximum power generation of the designed harvester. FEA analysis was conducted using the Acoustic and Structural Interaction Module of COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS to determine the attenuation characteristics of acoustic waves propagating in the water-filled pipes buried in soil. Experiments with and without the harvester integrated in the pipe system were conducted in lab environment using a pair of under water acoustic modems to determine the acoustic communication capability. The impact of the integrated harvester on the acoustic communication was tested. Combining energy harvesting technology and underwater acoustic communication together, this system can potentially achieve real-time monitoring and communication in the oil downhole environment.
Master of Science
Oil and Gas industry has been the primary energy source provider for our society for hundreds of years. As this industry evolves with new technologies, it also faces new challenges. One of the main challenges is the power supply problem in the oil field because of the limited lifespan of traditional batteries used in the oil production process. This study present a novel energy harvesting device that can replace the traditional batteries. By taking advantage of the constant fluid flow in various wells at oil field, the device can provide power for electronic devices, including but not limited to wireless sensors, communication modules, at the oil extraction sites, without needing additional power supply. This novel energy harvesting device can also be integrated with communication modules that uses acoustic wave to achieve wireless acoustic communication between underground and the surface. In this study, the harvester design, optimization, tests, and integration with acoustic modems were presented. With the help of such energy harvesting device, Oil and Gas industry will be one step closer to achieving true wireless, and real-time monitoring and communication. This will not only reduce maintenance cost but also greatly improve the production efficiency.

Lynch, Patrick. "Practical poetics : rhythmic spatiality and the communicative movement between site, architecture and sculpture." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.681225.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis is that urbanity is a function of the communicative movement between the natural and social conditions of a site, as revealed in architecture and sculpture, and most clearly in their continuity. In order to deal with the effects upon modern design and architectural thinking of dead metaphors like 'technology, 'form' and 'space', I critique and reject their use in architectural discourse, by returning to the philosophical tradition of 20th century phenomenology - Husserl and Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, et al- in order try to reveal the power of spatiality in 20th century thought, and its central importance to modern art and architecture. This led to new ways of making site-specific, topographic and spatial sculptures, and in some cases led to brilliant and urbane syntheses of architecture with sculpture - revealing the potential communicative depth of spatiality. Central to characterizing this communicative depth was recovering the cultural - rather than formal or picturesque - continuity of Renaissance and Classical poetics. Whilst the iconographic, social and political aspects of this continuity arc standard features of interpretation, far less noticed is the tradition of Eurhythmia. Rhythm was traditionally seen as an aspect of measure - therefore invoking justice (cf. Plato's Divided Line in the Republic) and mediation; and these animate a rich geometric poetics that is more profound than the usual understanding. A vital aspect of the character of urban spaces - arguably the most communicative of architectural settings - is the rhythmic characteristics of situations and the natural world that are revealed in urban topography and architectural physiognomy, and often articulated most emphatically in sculptures. Crucially, the revelation of the structure of relationships between site, place, social life, the natural world, etc., which make up the architectural conditions for civic praxis, is the basis also of ornament and decorum in the arts generally. However, when architects confuse their work with sculpture - misunderstood as '(arm' rather than rhythmic spatiality - the philosophical and communicative potential of architecture is diminished. My thesis concerns the conditions of the possible recovery of this potential in urban terms.

Hayes, Alan James. "Characterisation of cellular communication between an inflammatory site and the draining lymph node." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8160/.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to track cell migration, the project used a transgenic mouse system which ubiquitously expressed the fluorescent protein kaede that undergoes photo-conversion when exposed to violet or ultraviolet (UV) light. By inducing inflammation in peripheral tissues (e.g. the ear pinna on the hind footpad) and subsequently exposing the tissue to UV light, it was possible to spatiotemporally track the fate of the cells at these tissue sites. The study revealed that tissue resident cells do not constitute the majority of the migratory population and that immune cells must first be recruited to the site of challenge prior to migration. Migration from the site of challenge to the draining lymph node occurs within the first 48 hours post injection and returns to baseline over the following 24 hours. By combining the above approach with the YAe/Eα system to track antigen presentation, the study has also shown that antigen presentation persists for the first 24-36 hours and the majority of cells presenting antigen are CD103+CD11b+ dendritic cells. In collaboration with UCB, CyTOF profiling was performed on the migratory population to identify the diversity of these cells, identifying CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, γδ T cells, B cell and neutrophils in the draining lymph node originating from the injection site. Therefore, it is suggested that the migratory cells work in tandem with one another to control the initiation of adaptive immunity and determine the nature and the magnitude of the immune response. Additionally, the nature of an inflammatory stimulus can alter the magnitude and composition of the migratory population. This study highlights that our current knowledge regarding the initiation of adaptive immunity, in particular, the kinetics and phenotype of the migratory cells, remains limited. Further developing our understanding of the migratory population, antigen presentation and the kinetics of antigen presentation may help to identify new targets for immunomodulation for the treatment of inflammatory disorders or the development of new and improved vaccine adjuvants.

Abstract:
This thesis is interested in the information sharing in inter-vehicle communication networks. Today, thanks to the positioning systems and to the wireless communication capacities, vehicles can exchange data relating different kind of events (emergency brake, traffic jam, available parking spot, etc. ) in order to provide new assistance systems for the drivers. In this work, we focused on vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V). The absence of any fixed communication infrastructure and the high nodes' mobility (i. E. Vehicles) in the network raise particularly interesting problems in term of data management, for example, in term of relevance estimation in these particularly dynamic environments. In this context, our main contributions concern : the proposal of mechanisms, based on the computation of an encounter probability, allowing to estimate the relevance of information exchanged between vehicles ; mechanisms of continuous query processing in decentralized environments allowing to keep information updated ; a dissemination protocol, exploiting our encounter probability, allowing to route data to vehicles potentially interested. Our proposals were evaluated in the VESPA (Vehicular Event Sharing with a mobile Peer-to-peer Architecture) system as well as through numerous simulations

I believe that aural and visual language can contribute and inspire one another. Sound evokes the emotions and the senses. It is a catalyst for our imagination. It can be combined with imagery for the purpose of communication, harmoniously or contrastively. Both have corresponding characteristics—color/timbre, brightness/pitch, length/duration, scale/volume, composition/rhythm—and thus provide ways of transforming each other back and forth as input and output. Computer technology has increased the ease of transforming and manipulating the two. In my thesis project, I explore sound visualization, sound/image transformation and combination.

This work serves as a way of communicating the dark side of fashion to provoke change. Consumers is placed in the loop that consists of consumerism, fast fashion and advertising, and this work will try to expose that loop. This work aims to critique how fashion is consumed and sold through printing images from the dark side of fashion in combination with texts from advertisements to open up a conversation. The method to do this is by digital printing and transfer printing images from the dark side of the fashion industry on sustainable materials, combining the images with advertising texts. Through this the viewer is invited into conversation about the problems with subtle provocation by making the viewer emotionally involved.

Abstract:
The past decade has witnessed a proliferation of internet use for socialising with dedicated websites such as Facebook, and also for maintaining relationships using computer mediated communication. Individuals can extend the boundary associated with traditional forms of communication, and use technology to meet strangers online to share interests, or maintain existing relationships remotely. One of the most significant functions of computer-mediated communication (CMC) is its contribution to the evolution of social communication. CMC is “communication that takes place between human beings via the instrumentality of computers” (Thurlow, Lengel, & Tomic, 2004). As a consequence of the convenience and flexibility that this channel provides, CMC can be effectively used to orchestrate a variety of communication situations. Furthermore, social networks sites are becoming the choice in which individuals are maintaining relationships or meeting new people. The potential distinctions between these relationships and their offline counterparts remain contradictory. Online relationships may face different challenges, such as anonymity, restricted interaction (Walther, 1992), and the lack of physical presence. For example, sharing activities online such as playing games or visiting Web sites together differs from offline activities, such as going to the movies or dining together. These observations question whether CMC relationships have any parallels with real world relationships. Dunbar (1992) structured real world relationship by strength of ties and formulated the social brain hypothesis (SBH). This work uses the SBH as an interpretive lens in analyzing CMC relationship ties. Thus, a major focus of this work is to investigate implications of the SBH (Dunbar, 1992) within the context of CMC usage. It is recognised that CMC allows for the maintenance of a large number of friendships. Thus potentially, the use of CMC could alter the SBH ratios. Within the main findings consistency with SBH was found. Furthermore, CMC has many parallels with real world communication methods. Face-to-face communications were strongly preferred for maintenance of strong ties. Also phone usage was analysed and identified as an indicator of strong tie relationships, for both local and distant communications. The findings also address questions on displaced communities communication habits and their use of CMC. The phone was found to be most popular media and culture had a strong influence on communication content. The research used a mixed method approach, combining data collection via questionnaires, semi structured interviews and a diary study completed by participants. Based on the findings, a framework is proposed categorising groups on their level of real world socialising and CMC use. There are four essential contributions impacting on current theory. The findings offer new knowledge within the research of CMC and relationship maintenance theory. In our understanding these exploratory questions have not yet been addressed and therefore the findings of this research project are significant in their contributions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the link between the environmental communication of Tunisian Chemical Group (TCG) site of Gabès, and the momentum of a territorial dynamic intelligence between this company and its stakeholders. In a particular context of an industrial chemical pollution, the territorial actors become aware of the need to cooperate together for a sustainable development of their region. As a first step, we identify the stakeholders of the TCG Gabès in relation to the process of environmental communication to locate, in a second step, if there is (how or why) a dynamic of territorial intelligence between them. Two methodological steps are used in this study: an analysis of thematic content that focuses on a sample of nearly twenty players where six of these players are ecological associations; and a guide for interviews that embodies the three ethical principles of a territorial intelligence, participation, global/balanced approach, and partnership. The results obtained in this study show the existence of some practices of territorial intelligence. Our recommendation is for a better involvement of the public as well as the private actors and associations based on a participatory approach, or more specifically based on the use of digital technologies

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to investigate one major part of intelligent transportation systems, namely inter vehicles communication. In this framework, several theoretical studies have been performed to evaluate the performances of a communication system based upon the new Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology. Further theoretical studies have been conducted to address the ability of designing multiuser access UWB systems using orthogonal function waveforms. After the simulation stage, a prototype of our system has been built in order to proceed to first tests for evaluation of performances against used waveform, modulation kind, distance between emitter and receiver and the type of antenna. In order to comfort our theoretical study, supplementary tests have been performed on our mackup for pulsed monocycle waveforms and antipodal modulation, which demonstrate the feasibility of establishing an inter vehicles communication link

Using action research methodology, a qualitative case study was conducted, where the relationships between communication and education existing in the Associação Ambientalista Comunitária Espiritualista Patriarca São José (ACEPSJ) web site construction process are the object of study. The raised problem is: can a web site be identified as a educommunication gadget? Following this question, as the investigation methodology adopted dictates, the research major objectives were divided in two categories: one of action and the other of knowledge . The action goals are related to the ACEPSJ s web site project organization and educommunication strategies analysis and development to the site. Knowledge objectives are related to the understanding of education and communication interface in the analyzed process. Data were gathered in the researcher s field diary, collected from volunteers memberships and ACEPSJ s archives. In addition, 12 intentional semistructured interviews with key informers were conducted. Paulo Freire s (1988) dialogic theory is the theoretical framework, allied to Mario Kaplún s (1996) popular communication experiences, that arises in current discussion about a new interface between education and communication that may be named educommunication, according to investigator Ismar Oliveira Soares perspective (2006). The document analysis used as association specific supplementary action research method is the diagnosis, analysis and intervention device posed by Eduardo Vizer (2003). The results confirm the relevance of ducommunication management in integrating education and communication in associations communicative ecosystems. In this context, the web site may be considered as a educommunication gadget

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Structural economic changes in many countries, together with unprecedented developments in the business environment, have significantly affected the value creation processes of firms and the way business is conducted. The traditional financial reporting model is inadequate as a consequence of these developments, and intellectual capital (IC) information has gained importance for investment decision making. Empirical capital markets research demonstrates the value-relevance and predictive ability of certain types of IC information. The use of IC information by capital market participants is a topic that has begun to gain attention from contemporary researchers, but for which scant empirical evidence exists. Much of the research in this area relies on the literature about the use of non-financial information (NFI), which is inadequate in its examination of certain types of IC information. Therefore, the main aim of this thesis is to examine the use and communication of IC information by sell-side analysts. Sell-side analysts are of particular interest because they are capital market intermediaries and sophisticated processors of corporate information. The reports they produce provide an opportunity to examine their use and communication of IC information. The specific objectives of this thesis are to examine: the extent and types of IC information used by sell-side analysts in initiating coverage reports produced by them; how IC information is used and communicated in these reports; and factors that may influence the use of IC information by sell-side analysts. In order to address these research objectives a content analysis of IC references in 64 initiating coverage reports written on an equivalent number of S&P/ASX 200/300 companies is performed. The content analysis identifies and measures IC references by topic, evidence (discursive, monetary, numerical, or visual), news-tenor (positive, neutral or negative) and time orientation (forward-looking, past-oriented or non-time-specific). The findings indicate that Australian sell-side analysts appreciate the importance of IC in firm valuation, and thus are not ambivalent about the use of IC information in general. However, the findings suggest that their communication of IC information is inconsistent and unsystematic, and inadequate in relation to certain types of IC. This highlights the need for undertaking work at a policy level to educate and train sell-side analysts to deal with IC information, and the development of better models and guidelines for analysing and communicating IC information. On how IC information is used, this thesis finds that sell-side analysts have varying uses of IC information. It was found that IC is predominantly communicated discursively, positively, and in a past-oriented manner; and in doing so IC is used as a tool to further the sell-side analysts’ agenda for the company analysed. Further, the results highlight that the type of investment recommendation in analyst reports impacts on the evidence, news tenor, and time-orientation of IC communicated. These findings alert future researchers to the wider role played by IC beyond its use in forecasts and valuations. Also, the findings indicate inter-sectoral differences in the use of IC information in analyst reports, highlighting the need to improve IC reporting practices of firms by including additional information on industry-specific IC value drivers. Further, it was found that sell-side analysts emphasise IC information in analyst reports for companies from high IC-intensive sectors compared to those from low IC-intensive sectors. Similarly, it was found that analyst reports on risky companies contain significantly more IC information than analyst reports on less risky companies. Contrary to expectations, the extent of IC information is not found to vary with firm size and firm profitability. Also, the results support that the extent of certain types of IC information differs between types of analysts’ investment recommendations. More generally, the findings of this thesis suggest that the corporate reporting process could be improved by including additional types of IC information and providing this information more effectively in a manner that enables users to visualise the interrelationships between resources (both tangible and intangible) and outcomes. This study calls for standards or guidelines for intellectual capital reporting (ICR) in Australia and the expansion of the role of auditing and assurance services to enhance reliability of firm provided IC information in a bid to improve the use of IC information in company analysis by sell-side analysts.

Abstract:
Context In the last centuries, we have been generating and building infrastructure at a faster pace than ever before. Simultaneously the costs for labor and construction sectors as road and house building is increasing. This provides room for autonomous machines. The development of infrastructure is accomplished through highly efficient and productive construction machinery that progressively modernizes to form the society. In order to increase the pace of development, both cars and industry are getting more and more automated. Volvo Construction Equipment is exploring the autonomous vehicle space. The new machines complement and perfect the human work with efficiency, reliability, and durability. There is however, a question of trust between the human workers and the autonomous machines, I will in this thesis investigate methods on how to develop trust through communication systems with autonomous machines.   Objectives To create recommendations and solutions for products that build trust between human and automated machines on a construction site.   Method Outcome is reached through a case study exploration with validated learning, meaning that it will incorporate learnings through prototype iterations.   Results The result evaluates how trust could be developed between humans and autonomous machinery at a construction site and how communication methods between these parties could be implemented while maintaining high levels of efficiency and safety.   Conclusion Findings in this thesis indicates that trust is developed over time with reliable systems that provide colleagues with updated information available at any time. The results can be introduced in both today’s and tomorrow’s construction sites at various levels of advanced technology.

Abstract:
Construction is a big role player in every economy, and the Site Management Process (SMP) occupies a strategic position in the construction process. Despite existence of appreciable research, technology diffusion in the construction industry is slow. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) implementation processes and products have not adequately and beneficially exploited ICT for improvement of the SMP. This is especially true in developing countries. Without increase in utilisation of ICT, potential benefits for the SMP remain untapped. The aim of the thesis was to ascertain the levels of utilisation of recent ICT developments for the SMP, and thereby gauge the benefits or lack thereof. The theoretical concept of the research is based on the technology transfer sub-concept of adaptation. A fundamentally positivistic view, with principles of objectivist approach was used for the enquiry. The approach included an extensive literature review, and a multi-stage investigation strategy, set in South Africa. Theory reviewed was in the main disciplines of construction science and technology, computer science and technology, and management science. Investigations involved case studies of construction sites, a global ICT survey, a national practitioner survey, and analysis of ICT products. Findings from literature assert the appreciable potential utility in recent ICT, thereby substantiating the adaptability of recent ICT. In addition ICT adoption in the SMP is inadequate and inexpedient, falling short of potential benefits for construction, both generally and in the local context. Furthermore there are challenges to ICT adoption, which could vary according to context. Field research results also point to underutilisation of innovations located in recent ICT. The main challenges in this regard include inadequate knowledge of potential utility of recent ICT, and lack of relevant support and effective approaches to technology integration, in the SMP. Moreover exploitation of the adaptability of recent ICT in the local SMP does not go beyond basic adoption. As such most diffusion occurs only for items requiring an adaptation of usage context or area of application. The results strongly indicate minimal innovativeness in this regard. Frameworks for possible adaptations of existing technologies were also derived, while propositions are made for approaches to improve the utility of recent ICT in the SMP. Through a customised approach, the thesis establishes foundational understanding towards a generic framework for adapting potential utility in ICT to uses in construction, especially in the SMP. Thus the research contributes strategic information to the fledgling CICT body of knowledge, especially in the local context.
