Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses Sisyphus as a recurrent (philosophical) image in Samuel Beckett’s work. Starting from his prewar reading notes, it moves on to the 1940s and the radio play All That Fall (1956), which is studied in light of Albert Camus’s essays Le Mythe de Sisyphe (1942) and L’ Homme révolté (1951). By focussing on how the radio play deals with the absurd, revolt, suicide and murder, the article reads All That Fall as one of Beckett’s most critical but overlooked engagements with Camus, merging classical and modern versions of the character Sisyphus.

Abstract:
The tribe Sisyphini sensu stricto Mulsant, 1842 comprises only three genera, the widespread Sisyphus Latreille, 1807 and Neosisyphus Müller, 1942, and the Mauritius endemic, Nesosisyphus Vinson, 1946. In southern Africa, Sisyphus and Neosisyphus are represented by five species groups in each genus. Together, they comprise a total of 33 valid species, of which six are new: Sisyphus auricomus sp. n; Sisyphus australis sp. n ; Sisyphus bicuariensis sp. n; Sisyphus inconspicuus sp. n; Sisyphus swazi sp. n; and Neosisyphus tembyi sp. n. A further Southern African species, Sisyphus crispatus Gory, 1833, is proposed as a nomen dubium. Sisyphus natalensis Balthasar, 1968 (syn. n), and Sisyphus bornemisszanus Endrödi, 1983 (pars) (syn. n) are made synonyms of Sisyphus sordidus Boheman, 1857. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for Sisyphus costatus (Thunberg, 1818); Sisyphus seminulum Gerstaecker, 1871; Sisyphus nanniscus Péringuey, 1901; Sisyphus transvaalensis Péringuey 1901; Neosisyphus spinipes (Thunberg, 1818) and Neosisyphus barbarossa (Wiedemann, 1823). Diagnoses, photographs of habitus and male genitalia, lists of examined material and distribution maps are presented for all species. An identification key to the southern African sisyphine species is provided.

This thesis discussess the limitations of the standards-based movement and suggests that some schools, especially those whose mission it is to work exclusively with at-risk students, need to be allowed to set local behavioral standards before any consideration can be given to setting and teaching academic standards. It mainly focuses on Phoenix High School, a community day school in the Corona-Norco Unified School District, and discusses how the standards based movement is not suited to meet the needs of its students.

Full text
Abstract:
Sisyphus, the exemplary figure of hybris in Greek mythology, and Jingwei, the bird symbolizing the sublime of human will in Chinese mythology, share common myths in their mythic narratives: the transgression of death, cyclical action and the vanity of effort. The aim of this thesis is to examine the convergences and divergences between the Sisyphus myth and the Jingwei myth, using a mythocritical study combined with a hermeneutical approach. The didactic reading, whether it's the teaching on measurement in the Greek and latin authors' interpretations of the myth of Sisyphys, or the lesson on the power of human will in the first rewritings of the Jingwei myth, is in fact about the same mental reality: the human disposition of excessive self-assertion, whose different treatments in the two literatures reveal the cultural specificities of each. As mythology is a reservoir of literary motifs for poets, both myths are called upon and transposed in analogous thematic expression: the construction of an imaginary world, the expression of sentiment, the allegorical use as a counter-model for human actions and the exaltation of heroism. Through an analysis of the tendency to rehabilitate the two figures in contemporary literature, we can conclude that these two myths, marked by the mytheme of cyclical action, are a metaphor for the human desire to surpass oneself, and that their rewritings over time address the different facets of this desire. The tension between the invincible impulse to go beyond the limit and the rational awareness of the vanity of this attempt, which is inherent in this metaphor, is manifested as much in the occidental authors' criticism of acts of excess as in the ambivalent attitude that accompanies the heroic reading of the Jingwei myth. The complexity of this tension in the Chinese cultural context, which is based on a different conception of how to act, leads to a skewed reading of Camus's Myth of Sisyphus. The praise for Sisyphus's capacity for habituation in the novel The Four Books is an eloquent example

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes from a Conflict Resolution perspective the process of conflict management between catholic nationalists and protestant unionists in Northern Ireland. This process ended with the signature of the Good Friday Agreement in April of 1998. The strategy employed in the negotiations presupposed a twin track approach: the elaboration of a power sharing political arrangement and the implementation of confidence building measures for the decommissioning of arms by paramilitary groups. This dissertation aims to problematize mediation as an elitist conflict resolution process that considers conflict essentially in terms of a bargaining problem. Mediation is understood as a process that does not encourage the reconciliation of antagonist communities and the generation of a culture of cooperation, failing to promote confidence between the parties and imposing setbacks in the implementation of the peace agreement. Although mediation was able to offer to the belligerents parties a political alternative, the conflict in the region remained latent, with the escalation of violence during crucial moments when the negotiations were moving forward. This study concludes that the peace agreement was achieved much due to the disengagement of civil society in the conflict and the recognition of the parties that they would not win the conflict by forceful means. This conclusion points to the necessity of complementing the elitist approach with civil society conflict resolution initiatives in order to explain the evolution of the peace process in Northern Ireland towards conflict transformation and positive peace.

Full text
Abstract:
Laser cooling in standing waves is related to the study of coherent optical transients. Transients in the u-component of the optical Bloch vector lead to a simple and unified physical picture of cooling at both low saturation parameter (optical molasses) and high saturation parameter (stimulated cooling). Optical molasses is shown to result from a free induction decay transient depending on the coherence relaxation time T2, while stimulated cooling is an incoherent effect of the population relaxation time T1. The sign, tuning, and saturation characteristics of each are attributed to specific transient phenomena. The model offers a bare-state physical picture of laser cooling which complements the dressed-state "Sisyphus" model. Phase-interrupting processes which make T2 < 2T1 reduce the trap potential by a factor of T2/2T1 and lead to a cooling force proportional to T2–2T1 which has not appeared in previous theories. The new term dominates both optical molasses and stimulated cooling when T2 «T1.

Full text
Abstract:
A theoretical analysis is given for 1-D laser cooling below the Doppler limit of J = 1/2 ground- state atoms. The laser field consists of a pair of counterpropagating, linearly polarized low- power beams, whose polarization directions differ by an angle θ (0 ≤ θ ≤ π/2). For θ ≪ 1, the effective optical pumping time is shown to increase strongly near the nodes of the standing wave and the cooling force can be much larger than that for θ ~1. Moreover, for θ ≪ 1, it can be shown that the stimulated part of the atomic diffusion is reduced considerably as compared with that for θ ~ 1. As a consequence it is possible to achieve an equilibrium atomic distribution that, for θ ≪ 1, is characterized by a mean kinetic energy lower than that predicted to occur for θ = π/2. The equilibrium velocity distribution is not necessarily Maxwellian and thus the temperature of the atomic ensemble may not be well defined. The achievable kinetic energy is so small that the cooled atoms are trapped in the vicinity of the laser field nodes. An explanation for these effects is given in terms of Sisyphus cooling.

Abstract:
When studying the military leaders' behavior, we observe that the problem of prediction transformed their work in a Sisyphus one. The lack of knowing the future, especially in the field of states' behavior, represents a major problem for the military decision makers. In this article one will not use the prediction methods to generate possible futures, but will use it in order to analyze if the predictions methods are still a living concept. We asked whether the use of these methods could be a solution with encouraging results in developing military leaders competencies. In order to validate this hypothesis one tried to bind the decision types with neural networks and with military leaders behavior, thus creating a holist course consisting of variables united by a fitting problem. These elements could indicate one through a scientific approach if the prediction methods are really important for nowadays society. One used some methods which are widely spread in the international academic community in order to obtain the leaders decisions.
