Abstract:
The genes ces-1 and ces-2 control the decisions of two cells in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to undergo programmed cell death. Mutations that cause a gain of ces-1 function or a reduction of ces-2 function prevent these cells, the sisters of the two pharyngeal NSM neurons, from dying. These mutations do not affect most other cell deaths. Genetic studies indicate that ces-1 and ces-2 affect the fates of the NSM sisters by regulating the genes required for all programmed cell deaths to occur.

Abstract:
Multiple bereaved adult children, as siblings, have rarely been studied. We expand the paradigm of bereavement research to explore the ways that two sisters describe the experience and meaning of the death of their elderly father. The two sisters each participated in two separate qualitative ethnographic interviews, followed by standard qualitative analyses of the transcribed narratives. The findings yield contrasting perspectives of the sisters' disparate views of their family, of their father, and their views of each other, that provide insight into the complexity of the sharp differences in their reactions to their father's death. Their views of their father's death reflected their particular relationship with their father, their non-shared experiences over the life course, and their personal world views. Differences and contradictions in the views of multiple siblings can broaden our understanding of bereavement and of the processes central to parent-child ties at the end of life.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We know very little about Bernard Shaw’s sister Elinor Agnes beyond that she died from consumption just shy of twenty-two years of age. Shaw spoke so little of her, revealing so little of his feelings for her, that we might wonder how important Agnes was to him and how her death affected him. Searching for what is known of Agnes led to a number of clues suggesting a close bond existed between Shaw and his sister. Shaw’s silence regarding the dates of the deaths of his sisters Lucy and Agnes speaks of unresolved mourning and complicated grief. What led Shaw to so protect himself from the emotional pain it appears he experienced from death and loss? Importantly, it appears that Shaw’s memories of Agnes and his wishes for her contributed to the creation of his iconic young heroines.

The cause of death of the priest in Sisters, as an imagery factor, affects the readers’ understanding on the text. This paper discusses the cause of death of the priest by analyzing the representations of the text, the reality and the author, and studying the literary text, the reality and the author's experience under the equal discourse. This paper finds that all kinds of appearances caused by the death of priests points to the direction- the reality of the collapse of Irish traditional values in the early 20th century and the arduous task of reviving Irish traditional morality.

Abstract:
Based on the archival material from the Legacy of Sisters Jankovic, which is stored in the National Library of Serbia, this article critically examines Ljubica and Danica Jankovic?s relation to today?s world-renowned dance notation, kinetography Laban. The analyzed archival material includes the transcript of the first edition of Laban?s notation called Schrifttanz in German, as well as several unpublished manuscripts by Ljubica Jankovic. Even though the Jankovic sisters were familiar with kinetography Laban, they (especially Ljubica) were its great opponents. Instead of learning and using kinetography Laban, they developed their own dance notation system in early 1930s and used it until Ljubica?s death in 1974. In this article, the relationship of the Jankovic sisters? dance notation to Rudolf Laban?s kinetography is considered in the context of the wider processes of development of ethnochoreology, traditional dance notations, as well as the history of kinetography Laban in Europe in the first half and mid-20th century.

Abstract:
Maternal mortality is one of the major challenges to health systems in sub Saharan Africa. This paper estimates the lifetime risk of maternal death and maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in four states of Northern Nigeria. Data from a household survey conducted in 2011 were utilized by applying the “sisterhood method” for estimating maternal mortality. Female respondents (15–49 years) were interviewed thereby creating a retrospective cohort of their sisters who reached the reproductive age of 15 years. A total of 3,080 respondents reported 7,731 maternal sisters of which 593 were reported dead and 298 of those dead were maternal-related deaths. This corresponded to a lifetime risk of maternal death of 9% (referring to a period about 10.5 years prior to the survey) and an MMR of 1,271 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births; 95% CI was 1,152–1,445 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. The study calls for improvement of the health system focusing on strategies that will accelerate reduction in MMR such as availability of skilled birth attendants, access to emergency obstetrics care, promotion of facility delivery, availability of antenatal care, and family planning. An accelerated reduction in MMR in the region will contribute towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goal of maternal mortality reduction in Nigeria.

Abstract:
China's Insurance Law defines "workers who have a labor relationship with the insured" for pure economic interests. According to the current law, when an employer purchases insurance for its employees, the transfer of the insurance claim right can be effective. In this case, should the share of the income of the employer, as a non-natural person, when receiving the employee's death insurance be restricted? This issue is not explicitly stipulated in the law and needs to be discussed. In light of social reality, this article believes that the employer's share of benefits in group accident insurance should be restricted by amending the Insurance Law or supplementing judicial interpretations. If necessary, content that favors the insured and their families can be added. This will save losses and prevent the employer from using the employment relationship to infringe on the legitimate interests of employees.

Abstract:
Death of a child is a very painful experience for parents and remaining siblings who experience physiological and emotional symptoms as described by the parents. There are few reports from the remaining siblings on their physical and emotional health and even less data on their treatments and associated health care costs after sibling loss. The purpose of this study in children who have lost a sibling in the NICU/PICU, ER or those who have been sent home on technology dependent equipment to die, is to compare parents’ and children’s perceptions of the surviving sibling’s health, identify factors related to these perceptions, and describe treatments for the sibling’s physical and mental health at 2 and 4 months after a sibling’s death. Sixty four surviving siblings and their parents reported on the siblings’ mental and overall health. Available treatment charges (visits to the emergency room, physician office, hospitalization, and any health services (mental & physical) since the sibling death were collected from bills and insurance receipts. Cause of child death (acute or chronic) was collected from the deceased child’s hospital record. The relationship between parent and sibling’s perception of the surviving sibling’s health, and anxiety and depression at 2 and 4 months post the death were measured using the Children’s Depression Inventory and the Spence Anxiety Scales. Data were analyzed using: T-Tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, frequencies and descriptive statistics. Findings indicated that at 2 and 4 months parent’s perceived their surviving siblings’ health to be better than the child perceived his/her health to be. At 4 months fathers rated the siblings’ health compared to their peers lower than the siblings. Greater child anxiety was related to lower father’s ratings of the child’s health now and compared to peers. Treatments and charges increased from 2 months to 4 months with males having more treatments than females. The majority of the treatments consisted of routine physician visits, non-routine physician visits, emergency room/urgent care visits and counseling. Study findings can help guide healthcare providers and educators in identifying those children that are at high risk for negative health effects after the death of a sibling.

Abstract:
Activation of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor 1 (TNFR1) by its ligand TNFα induces cell death through recruitment of a Death Inducing Signaling Complex (DISC) containing caspase-8 and the adaptor proteins FADD, TRADD, TRAF2 and RIP. This complex causes the cleavage and activation of caspase-8 that leads to apoptosis. However, TNFR1 can also trigger activation of signaling pathways related to cell survival and differentiation, such as the transcription factor NF-kB or MAPK/ERK. In fact, in most cell types it has been shown that survival signaling by TNFα needs to be abrogated in order to induce apoptotic cell death. This has been classically achieved by co-treatment with protein synthesis inhibitors such as Actinomycin D or Cycloheximide, or by direct inhibition of the NF-kB pathway through chemical inhibitors or overexpression of a non-degradable form of IkBα. A previous report in our lab revealed that Actinomycin D sensitizes PC12 cells and cortical neurons to TNFα- induced apoptosis through down-regulation of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-XL. However, the results showed that this effect was independent of NF-kB or other antiapoptotic proteins such as FLIP-L or IAPs. This thesis analyses the activation of survival pathways by TNFα. In particular, I have established a link between the activation of NF-kB and the MAPK/ERK pathway. I have used PC12 cells, a wellknown model of neuronal cells. Inhibition of the NF-kB pathway in these cells induced a downregulation of the antiapoptotic FLIP-L. My results indicate that TNFα-induced activation of the MAPK/ERK pathway depends on FLIP-L. Furthermore, this signaling cascade does not involve the classical activation of the upstream effector Ras. However, the MAPKKK Raf-1 is necessary to induce ERK1/2 phosphorylation, thus suggesting that FLIP-L subtitutes Ras in this function. The results of this thesis also demonstrate that the MAPK/ERK pathway affords protection from TNFα-induced apoptosis, since abrogation of this signaling cascade renders PC12 sensitive to cell death induced by TNFα in a manner similar to sensitization achieved by NF-kB inhibition. Characterization of the apoptotic pathway shows the implication of JNK, which is necessary to induce cell death when NF-kB is blocked and when MAPK/ERK is inhibited. Moreover, JNK induces the upregulation of Bim, a BH3-only protein classically linked tot the induction of apoptosis. Altogether, this thesis establishes the relevance of the MAPK/ERK pathway as a negative regulator of TNFα-induced apoptosis. Importantly, the results obtained reveal that NF-kB is crucial for the induction of ERK1/2 phosphorylation by TNFα, and that this pathways are linked through the antiapoptotic protein FLIP-L.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major public health problems worldwide, affeting about 335,000 people per year in the U.S. and approximately 712 people per day in Brazil, predominantly in the most productive age group. Especially in young people, the causes are structural abnormalities of cardiac disorders and genetic origins of arrhythmogenic, in addition, some medications may influence susceptibility to SCD or cardiovascular disease. As death can occur whitin a maximum of one hour after onset of symptoms and not be due to trauma or violence, the diagnosis of the cause of the death can be difficult. Genetic analysis in these cases is very useful to help identify them and inform close relatives about a possible genetic risk factor pre-existing. This work proposed to standardize the PCR and SNaPshot multiplex to analyze 11 SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) related to the SCD (NEWTON-CHEH et al. 2009) in Brazilian familial groups with a history of heart failure for future use in Forensic Genetics and Medical. For this, samples were collected from individuals with a family history of heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyophathy or close relative who suffered a heart attack, and individuals without this history used as controls. The analysis showed no siginificant differences between the group of the individuals with a history and control, but the data are compatible with the frequencies of known SNPs. It also identified a probable hereditary factor for the SNP rs4725982 in one of the studied families

Abstract:
AbstractEmma Morano was born on 29 November 1899 in a small mountain village in Piemonte, and died on 15 April 2017 in Verbania on Lake Maggiore (100 km north of Milano). She was the daughter of Giovanni Morano, a miner; and Mathilde Bresciani, aged 24, a weaver. She was the first child in the family, and her arrival was followed by the births of seven siblings, four sisters and three brothers, all of whom she all survived. On 16 October 1926, Emma Morano married Giovanni Martinuzzi, but they separated a few years later after the death of their child. For more than 30 years, she worked in a jute factory. She then worked for about 20 years in the kitchen of a Marianist boarding school until she retired at the age of 75. After retirement, she lived in a small two-room apartment. In her final years, her hearing and sight were greatly reduced, but she could recognise faces and could communicate when spoken to loudly. She seemed to remember both past events and more recent ones. She had never been hospitalised, but had been treated for gastrointestinal bleeding and for urinary infections. She took no drugs regularly except laxatives. In the archives of four municipalities in the region, we obtained copies of the death certificates of her parents, the birth certificates of all of her siblings, her marriage certificate, and the birth and death certificates of her child. We found no inconsistences in the documents.

Abstract:
Suicide causes approximately 800,000 deaths worldwide every year, which means one death by suicide every 40 seconds. Suicidal ideation is the first stage in the suicide risk scale, in which the individuals have thoughts regarding being dead. Thereby, suicide prevention strategies may focus on identifying and treating individuals with this severity level. Therefore, this article presents the summary of an Academic Master’s Dissertation that proposes Thoth, a computational model for assisting people suffering from suicidal ideation. The main scientific contribution of the Thoth is the personalized assistance for individuals at risk of suicidal ideation through the analysis of Context Information for anticipating the identification of future risks. The model gathers sensor, sociodemographic, and psychological data for future risk checking through Machine Learning models. Experiments showed that the models obtained F1-Score up to 94.12%. Based on the experiments, Thoth could act in a personalized manner, sending recommendations and alerts to patients and caregivers, respectively. Thus, this research provides an improvement in the assistance of individuals with suicidal ideation through the proposed model.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a fast depth map coding for 3D-High Efficiency Video Coding (3D-HEVC) based on static Coding Unit (CU) splitting decision trees. The proposed solution is based on our previous works and avoids the costly Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) process for depth maps coding, which evaluates several possibilities of block partitioning and encoding modes for choosing the best one. This coding approach uses data mining and machine learning to extract the correlation among the encoder context attributes and to build the static decision trees. Each decision tree defines if a depth map CU must be split into smaller blocks, considering the encoding context through the evaluation of the CU features and encoder attributes. The results demonstrated that this approach can halve the 3D-HEVC encoder processing time with negligible coding efficiency loss. Besides, the obtained results surpass all related works regarding processing time and coding efficiency. The results reported in this dissertation were published in three journals and two events, besides generate a patent deposit. These products have the master student as the first author.

Abstract:
Feminist autobiography is a genre with long-standing literary and philosophical tradition, still some aspects, like, autobiography as “death writing” have come to scholarly attention as of relatively recent. The conceptual framework hinged on the concepts of “tanatography” (defined as an account of a person’s death) and “autotanatography” (defined as an account of one’s own death) makes it possible to take a fresh look into feminist writings from 19th and 20th centuries (Alice James and Simone de Beauvoir). Among the questions for the critical reflection we can mention the following ones: issues of memory and forgetting, of death of the significant other, of aging, of suicide, of literary death (ending the writing career path). Autothanatography is self-death-writing, instead of self-life-writing, even if death is an experience that cannot be had for oneself. The current article takes a look into the auto-death-writing of two women writers: Alice James (1848-1892) – a sister of William and Henry James and Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986). Although both women’s lives are set almost a century apart and none of them define herself as a feminist writer, their memoirs are written from the vantage point of imminent death. In the first case (James’s) we can speak of her posthumously published diaries, especially their second part written after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Whereas in the latter (Beauvoir’s) case the autothanatological vibe is felt throughout the whole series of her memoirs (“Memoirs of a dutiful daughter”, “The prime of life”, “Force of circumstance”, “A very easy death”), but especially in the oeuvre “All is said and done” – the writing in anticipation of one’s death. The aspect that is common to both writers is that their memoirs exhibit the strategy of recollection, of re-reading their life events anew in the wake of the end (physical and/or authorial).

Abstract:
Social BPM is the combination of Business Process Management (BPM) with social and collaborative techniques for the purpose of exploring collaboration among stakeholders throughout the BPM lifecycle. Its goals are to reduce common problems in BPM by ensuring collaboration and transparency. To the best of our knowledge, there is no information on how Social BPM is being used in organizational environments and on its impacts. This study aims at showing how Brazilian organizations are using Social BPM practices and technologies. Therefore, a survey was conducted with employees from different companies in order to collect data on their usage of BPM collaborative practices. The survey received 31 replies and 3 of the respondents were also interviewed in order to provide depth to their answers and to enhance the overall understanding. The results show that collaboration happens predominantly in design, modeling, and improvement phases. Collaboration still happens mainly without formal planning and without tool support.

Abstract:
The Brazilian National Cancer Institute (INCA) estimates for each year of the 2020/2022 triennium 8,460 new cases of cancer in children and adolescents in the 1-19 age group. As the second cause of death in this age group in most regions of Brazil, childhood cancer is considered a serious public health problem. Fortunately, childhood cancer is a disease with a high probability of cure if diagnosed early and treated in specialized centers. Thus, early diagnosis is an important public health strategy for treatment and is directly related to patient survival. This paper presents APPonco, a mobile application for agile and safe access to information about childhood cancer for healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, nutritionists, etc.) and the general public (patients, families and caregivers). APPonco was a demand from a reference center in the treatment of childhood cancer in Brazil. The paper details the requirements, architecture, and development process of the application. Since 2020, APPonco is available free for Android and iOS. The software is registered in the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

Abstract:
Adolescence, a time of transition to adulthood, is different for young men and women in Pakistan; brothers and sisters living under the same roof have different opportunities available in all aspects of life. More young people aged 15–24 live in Pakistan now than at any other time in its history—an estimated 36 million in 2004. Recognizing the dearth of information on the situation of this large group of young people, the Population Council undertook a nationally representative survey from October 2001 to March 2002. The analysis presented in this brief comes from Adolescents and Youth in Pakistan 2001–02: A Nationally Representative Survey. The survey sought information from youth aged 15–24, responsible adults in the household, and other community members in 254 communities. A total of 6,585 households were visited and 8,074 young people were interviewed. This brief concludes that girls face disadvantages, especially in rural areas, and that parents, community, and policymakers need to work together to ensure that girls, like their brothers, are able to make a successful transition to adulthood.
