Born in 1926, Frances "Sissy" Tarlton Farenthold began her exploration of politics at a young age. In 1942, Farenthold graduated from Hockaday School for Girls. In 1945, she graduated from Vassar College, and in 1949, she graduated from the University of Texas School of Law. Farenthold was a practicing lawyer, participated in the Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission from 1964 to 1969, and directed Nueces County Legal Aid from 1965 to 1967. In 1969, she began her first term in the Texas House of Representatives. During her second term in the House (1971-1972), Farenthold became a leader in the fight against government corruption. In 1972, she ran in the Democratic primary for Texas governor, and forced a close run-off vote with Dolph Briscoe. Soon afterwards in 1972, she was nominated as a Democratic vice-presidential candidate at the Democratic convention, in addition to her nomination as the chairperson of the National Women's Political Caucus. Farenthold ran in the Democratic primary for governor again in 1974, but lost decisively. From 1976 until 1980, she was the first woman president of Wells College, before coming back to Texas and opening a law practice. For the next three decades, Farenthold practiced law, taught at the University of Houston, and furthered her activism for the environment, as well as women's, minority's, gay and lesbian, and immigrant's rights. She currently lives in Houston and continues working towards these goals.

Along with the live performance of Sissy!, the present document constitutes research centred on the figure of the ‘sissy,’ defined in relation to the effeminate homosexual. The practice-based study proposes ‘sissiography’ as an original concept, conceived of as a negotiation between the three elements of body, abuse and space. Bodily traits are investigated under the coin ‘negotiable markers’ to include mannerisms, behaviours and sartorial choices commonly regarded as characteristic of the sissy. Abuse is studied in reference to Butler’s notion of ‘words that wound’ as well as to incidents of hate crime in London. Thirdly, sissy space is analysed in relation to safe and hostile urban zones. The study concludes that the unifying principle at the heart of sissiography is the concept of failure. In examining the writing of sissiness, the thesis considers existing scholarship on sissies and positions itself against the diagnostic concept of so-called Gender Identity Disorder. The argument developed here is underpinned by autobiographical elements. Historical discourses of male effeminacy are presented to challenge the notion of fixity in perceptions of the sissy. While offering a written investigation of the concept of sissiography, the study also develops an analysis through the researcher’s body in a series of studio experimentations and live performances. Practice is the central instrument of the enquiry, facilitating the writing of new sissy discourses. A cyclical mode of research leads from practice to theory and back to practice. The sissiography is thereby shown to be a form of inscription on the body, a form of writing space, of writing movement, of reinscribing history, of describing possible sissy futures.

Il presente studio si propone di ricostruire, in una dimensione monografica, la figura di Francesco Scaramuzza, personalità artistica prolifica che ha determinato nella prima metà dell’Ottocento il nuovo corso della pittura parmense. Interprete e portatore di un Romanticismo atipico, fu debitore, a suo modo, tanto della lezione dei Nazareni quanto, più tardi, della svolta lombarda verso i temi contemporanei, senza mai trascurare l’amata impronta correggesca. L’artista attraversa tre distinti momenti di committenza, dal governo restaurato di Maria Luigia d’Asburgo, dopo la parentesi napoleonica, all’infelice intervallo borbonico, presto sfociato nell’annessione al regno Sardo di Vittorio Emanuele II. Sotto la sovrana austriaca giunge all’apice della carriera, subendo, però, una battuta d’arresto con i Borbone a causa delle sue note simpatie libertarie. Trova una conferma nel nuovo governo unitario, il quale gli affida il compito di illustrare la Divina Commedia, la sua opera più nota e più riuscita, che segnerà, dopo diciassette anni di strenuo lavoro, il punto di arrivo della sua carriera d’artista.This study aims to reconstruct, in a monographic dimension, the profile of Francesco Scaramuzza, a prolific artist who determined the new course of painting in Parma in the first half of the 19th century. Interpreter and bearer of an atypical Romanticism, in his artistic development he was inspired by the lessons of the Nazarenes as much as by the Lombard interest in contemporary subjects, without neglecting the beloved imprint of Correggio’s style. Throughout his career he went through three different patronages, from the restored regime of Marie Louise of Hapsburg, after the Napoleonic period, to the unhappy Bourbon interlude, ended quickly with the annexation to the reign of Vittorio Emanuele II. Under the Austrian sovereign he reached the peak of his career, suffering, however, a setback under the Bourbon government because of his well-known libertarian sympathies. His value was recognized eventually by the establishment of the united Italy, who entrusted him to illustrate the Divine Comedy, his most famous and successful work, which will mark, after seventeen years of strenuous work, the conclusion of his career as an artist.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-29O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar o romance Borderline (2003), da escritora quebequense Marie-Sissi Labrèche, no campo da escrita de si, sob o prisma da autoficção, termo registrado pelo crítico e professor francês Serge Doubrovsky em Fils (1977). Este estudo visa averiguar, além da coincidência onomástica entre o nome da autora, da narradora e da personagem, a possibilidade de um jogo em que Labrèche cria um outro eu, capaz de fornecer supostas referências a traços autobiográficos mesclados a uma matéria ficcional. A pesquisa, portanto, consiste na investigação da relação entre o transtorno borderline e a estrutura do texto, examinando se o tema escolhe sua forma ideal de expressão, se a autora se faz valer dessa estrutura como sendo decisiva para inspirar a pensar esse transtorno psicológico. Ainda que a matriz teórica da autoficção seja francesa, não são muitas as publicações e trabalhos acadêmicos sobre esse efeito de leitura nas obras contemporâneas de autoras quebequenses. O corpus a ser analisado é Borderline. No que tange à teoria, serão utilizados os estudos acerca da perspectiva teórica da autoficção, por meio da contribuição de alguns teóricos, como Evando Nascimento e Leonor Arfuch. La ricerca nasce dalla volontà di rispondere alla domanda: quale può essere il possibile uso in antropologia delle fotografie definite “non scientifiche” o “d’epoca”.
Se consideriamo le fotografie come mezzo di comunicazione di una realtà culturale, e non semplicemente come una sua registrazione, è facile immaginare il potenziale che una disciplina come l’antropologia può avere a disposizione nell’analizzare, da una parte, le modalità con cui l’individuo costruisce simbolicamente la propria visione del mondo; e dall’altra, l’interazione tra osservatore e osservato in una dimensione di reciprocità e scambio.
Al centro di questa ricerca ci sono le fotografie scattate dall’architetto mantovano Ugo Sissa che, tra il 1953 e il 1958, ha lavorato alle dipendenze del governo iracheno. Attraverso un processo di osservazione di circa un migliaio di immagini ho incentrato lo studio sullo “sguardo turistico” del testimone e sull’immagine di Iraq che questa produzione ha contribuito a creare. L’attenzione per il contesto storico-culturale in cui il fotografo è cresciuto e in cui ha prodotto la sua documentazione fotografica mi ha permesso di concludere che le fotografie ci restituiscono un Vicino Oriente onirico, lontano dal tempo, in una prospettiva che potremmo definire orientalista.
Uno studio come esperimento e contributo all’individuazione di quelle possibilità di ricerca che le fotografie non specialistiche possono offrire nel campo della conoscenza e della comunicazione visuale.

Dans plusieurs romans québécois récents, nous observons une tendance chez les auteurs féminins à exploiter le corps de la femme dans des écrits, souvent à connotation érotique. Ce corps devient un outil de séduction et sert au personnage féminin dans une quête quelconque (attention, affection, admiration, etc.) Cette approche surprend si nous considérons la démarche entreprise par les féministes des années 1970-80 pour libérer la femme de l'emprise qu'exercaient les hommes sur son corps et pour la faire passer d'objet à sujet, entre autres au sein d'une littérature féministe. Nous abordons donc, dans cette analyse d'oeuvres de nouvelles écrivaines, la conception du personnage féminin ainsi que son rôle, pour savoir si ce dernier renvoie à une fonction de sujet où s'il exerce plutôt un retour à la fonction d'objet, idéologie véhiculée par les valeurs patriarcales. À l'aide de romans contemporains, Borderline de Marie-Sissi Labrèche, Putain de Nelly Arcan et Ainsi font-elles toutes de Clara Ness, nous constatons que les personnages féminins donnent l'impression d'être sujets par la façon dont ils usent de leur corps pour se forger une identité et une personnalité forte. Par contre, les romancières récupèrent des idées misogynes entourant la femme, la ramenant à sa condition de femme-objet dont le corps sert au plaisir des hommes. Des études sur l'érotisme et la pornographie permettent de déterminer les limites et les différences entre ce qui est conçu pour le regard masculin et ce qui renvoie aux intérêts féminins. De plus, les théories sur l'agentivité qui étudient le pouvoir et le contrôle qu'exercent les personnages féminins sur leur propre vie nous permettent de mieux délimiter les frontières entre femme-objet, femme-objet "volontaire" et "assumée" et femme-sujet.

Ce mémoire de maîtrise en études françaises s'intéresse à la création littéraire et à ce que cette création implique dans ses rapports entre, d'une part, l'impudeur et la gêne, et, d'autre part, l'identité sexuelle. Il se penche sur l'autocensure et le prix du dire dans le processus de création des femmes qui écrivent dans le Québec contemporain. La première partie du mémoire, La femme-enfant, propose huit nouvelles qui explorent le non-dit de différents personnages, leurs zones secrètes, mais également la part qu'ils n'arrivent pas à taire complètement. Le titre du recueil, La femme-enfant, rappelle l'impudeur des enfants, leur non-gêne devant ce qui paralyse généralement les adultes. La femme qui s'autocensure, l'enfant qui parle. La création n'est-elle pas un mélange des deux? La seconde partie se concentre sur l'analyse des écrits de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et de Nelly Arcan, deux écrivaines réputées pour leur écriture impudique et audacieuse, ainsi que les deux entretiens que chacune d'elle m'a accordés, toujours pour essayer de comprendre comment le pouvoir ou le non-pouvoir d'énonciation se manifeste dans l'écriture des auteures contemporaines. Le mémoire se conclut sur l'analyse de ma propre autocensure dans mon processus de création.

Ce mémoire en recherche-création s’articule en deux parties, soit un roman et un essai. La résilience des corps, roman à double narration, met en scène Clara et Romain, un couple dont l’avenir est ébranlé par une grossesse surprise. Dans les chapitres s’alternent les voix des deux personnages, tant dans le passé que dans le présent. La voix de Clara se démultiplie, elle qui souffre de schizophrénie. L’essai Femmes sans enfant : une impossibilité? Analyse de La lune dans un HLM de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et d’Un léger désir de rouge d’Hélène Lépine répond à un questionnement soulevé durant l’écriture du roman, soit « Une femme peut-elle dire, sans se justifier, qu’elle ne veut pas d’enfant? ». Les romans La lune dans un HLM de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et Un léger désir de rouge d’Hélène Lépine sont analysés avec une perspective féministe, de façon à faire ressortir la thématique du refus de la maternité dans le discours et dans les actes des personnages.This master’s thesis in research and creative writing is divided in two parts – a novel and an essay. The former, La résilience des corps [The Resilience in Us], is a dualnarrative novel told from the perspectives of Clara and Romain, a couple whose plans for the future are turned upside-down by an unexpected pregnancy. Through the chapters, the protagonists take turns in the narrator’s seat, going back and forth between their past and present, while Clara’s voice multiplies under the grip of schizophrenia. The essay, titled Femmes sans enfant : une impossibilité? Lo anterior se torna particularmente interesante al indagar sobre la hip?tesis de existir un verdadero Non Bis in Idem entre ambas potestades, que, a priori, pareciera que la pr?ctica jur?dica prefiere un criterio de especialidad, resolviendo la controversia posible prefiriendo a aquella norma que trata de forma m?s directa el manejo de los Residuos Industriales L?quidos. No obstante, el solo criterio no es suficiente, debiendo justificarse en Derecho y en pr?ctica las razones de la mayor eficiencia de una respuesta del ordenamiento jur?dico. Purposive: In order to understand points of view of masculinity and femininity, researcher study gays in Taiwan. Further more, to study sissy gays’ stresses in gay community or other situation. Exploring sissy gays’ social conditions in heterosexual society and identity-formations in hegemonic masculinity. Method: This study uses depth interview to grab interviewers’ thoughts by retrace their life experience. When interviewees recall their stories, researcher will record their words by recorder. Researcher would ask three main questions: (1) gays’ social conditions in heterosexual society; (2) what are gays’ viewpoints of femininity and what are their displays; (3) the difference between sissy gays and masculine gays. Researcher would spend 2 hours to interview every interviewer. And transfer voice information into word information. Analyzing their words and trying to find different displays in different conditions(school, family, working place, and gay community) by two identities(gay status, and sissy status). Result and Discussion: Researcher finds that different interviewers reveal similar life styles: at working place, all interviewees present the image of heterosexual men. They try hard to keep distant with gay issue. When they were in school, they would try to make their friends aware of their gay status and/or sissy status. Some of them got positive feedbacks would reveal more information about their gayness. Some receive negative ones would stop talking about that. In family, there are two kinds of group: one would make family members know about their gay and sissy status; another would keep it a secret. In gay community, all of them show an ease and comfortable attitude. Away from heterosexuality, they needn’t treat others with phony. Hegemonic masculinity, in stead of, affects gays’ life in gay community.

Moje diplomová práce se věnuje tomu, jakým způsobem přistupují vyučující na druhém stupni základních škol k dívkám a chlapcům, kteří jsou genderově atypičtí. Tedy k dětem, kteří nesplňují představu "správné" dívky či "správného" chlapce z hlediska genderového řádu společnosti a nějakým způsobem se těmto představám vymykají (v rovině osobnostní, vzhledové či behaviorální). Ve výzkumu se zajímám o zkušenost vyučujících s těmito dětmi, o charakteristiky, jenž jsou podle nich genderově atypické, jak tyto děti podle nich přijímá kolektiv či učitelský sbor, apod., avšak podstatou mého zkoumání je zjistit, jaký postoj vůči těmto dětem učitelé a učitelky zaujímají a co jej ovlivňuje. Z výsledků výzkumu pak vyplývá, že existuje určitá typologie postojů vyučujících k genderově atypickým dětem, přičemž jednotlivé postoje vyučujících jsou ovlivňovány mnoha faktory. Faktor, který se ukázal jako nejdůležitější, protože významně ovlivňuje to, zda se bude jedna spíše o pozitivní či negativní přijetí dítěte, je to, zda projevy atypického dítěte narušují či znesnadňují vyučování a práci vyučujícího, nikoliv pouhá skutečnost, že je dítě genderově atypické. DE : Die vorliegende Magisterarbeit bezieht sich auf die Problematik der linguokognitiven Struktur der belletristischen und filmischenDiskurse. Die Aktualität des erforschten Themas ist durch ein hohes Interesse der modernen Linguistikan Linguokulturologie und Diskurswissenschaft, sowie an komplizierten Prozessen der Konzeptualisierung der schöngeistigen Wirklichkeit im Roman und seiner Verfilmung zu erklären. Das lässt sich anhand des Konzepts SISSI ausführen, das im Roman „Sissi - Der Schicksalsweg einer Kaiserin” von Marie Blank-Eismannund seiner Filmversion “Sissi” repräsentiert wurde. Das zu analysierende Konzept SISSI, dessen Name von Natur aus eine anthroponymische Bezeichnungist, gehört zu linguokulturellen Konzepten des bayerisch-österreichischen Kultur. Es kann aufgrund solcher semantischen Parameter wie „Das Äußere“ und „Charakterzüge“ beschrieben werden. Jeder Parameter wird durch die Gesamtheit der konzeptuellen Merkmale (KM) präsentiert, z.B.: 1) „Das Äußere“ – KM „Schönheit“, „Jugendalter“, „Charakterzüge“ – KM „Eigensinn“, „Natürlichkeit“, „Bescheidenheit“, „Schlauheit“, „Sensibilität“. Diese Merkmale zeugen von einer Einzigkeit, Vielseitigkeit der Gestalt von Sissi, was sowohl im Roman als auch in seiner filmischen Darstellung zum Ausdruck kommt. Es sei betont, dass diese Charakteristika manchmal ambivalent sein können. Unter den im belletristischen und filmischen Diskurs bestimmten KM sind sowohl qualitative als auch quantitative Unterschiede zu bemerken. Qualitative Unterschiede betreffen in der Regel bewusste Transformationen der Gestalt der Hauptperson seitens des Regisseurs.

Hoje em dia, as pessoas dependem muito da Internet para ajudar nas mais pequenas tarefas do dia-a-dia, como ir às compras, ver o correio eletrónico, falar nas redes sociais ou até no trabalho. Este aumento no uso da Internet foi impulsionado pelo uso de sistemas de gestão de conteúdo, permitindo a utilizadores normais, criarem e gerirem o seu próprio website. Existindo esta quantidade de informação, eventualmente apenas em formato digital, é necessário considerar o seguinte: todas as pessoas são diferentes e podem “ver” a Internet de diferentes perspetivas. Sendo uma plataforma universal, o seu conteúdo deveria ser acessível a todos de maneira igual. Infelizmente, não tem havido muita consideração para com pessoas com necessidades especiais. Pessoas com alguma deficiência, quer seja motora, sensorial ou mental, deveriam conseguir ter a mesma experiência que o resto dos utilizadores. Devido ao facto de estarem condicionados, é preciso ter em conta no desenvolvimento Web, soluções que permitam a essas pessoas terem a mesma experiência de navegação. Por esta razão o conceito de acessibilidade na Web foi crescendo ao longo dos últimos anos. Foram desenvolvidas diretrizes e padrões de modo a que as páginas Web desenvolvidas sejam acessíveis a todos. Para ajudar no desenvolvimento de páginas acessíveis, a tarefa de confirmar se as diretrizes de acessibilidade estavam a ser cumpridas foi automatizada. Uma ferramenta capaz de fazer este tipo de análise é o QualWeb, desenvolvido na faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa por um grupo de investigadores, no qual eu colaborei. Como referido anteriormente, as páginas Web têm cada vez mais conteúdo, pelo que é importante para os seus consumidores conseguir distinguir a informação relevante. Ao ser apresentada uma página a uma pessoa com necessidades especiais, esta pode não ser capaz de fazer a separação de conteúdos, o que pode prejudicar a interpretação da informação. Com este trabalho pretendo desenvolver um mecanismo capaz de identificar a estrutura de uma página Web, através da sua informação semântica e sintática. Neste caso vou apenas focar-me em menus porque para além de serem um elemento importante nas páginas Web, podem facilitar a navegação para uma pessoa com necessidades especiais. Para atingir este objetivo, precisei de usar uma ferramenta de segmentação. Dentro de todas as que foram pesquisadas na minha investigação de trabalho relacionado, a melhor foi o VIPS, que relaciona os aspetos visuais da página Web e o código fonte para dividir a página em diferentes secções. O meu capítulo do trabalho relacionado também contém os principais conceitos para entender o que foi desenvolvido, bem como uma investigação de outras ferramentas de avaliação automática da acessibilidade de páginas Web, focando-se mais na que vou utilizar, o QualWeb. Como mencionado também refiro algumas ferramentas de segmentação, descrevendo cada uma delas e mostrando numa tabela as suas características, sendo o VIPS estendido a melhor classificada para o que pretendia. Depois da análise do trabalho relacionado, fui perceber o funcionamento do VIPS estendido, interpretando os vários passos do algoritmo. Uma das vantagens do VIPS estendido é que para além de fazer a segmentação de uma página, ou seja, dividi-la em diferentes secções, é ainda capaz de categorizar cada secção, atribuindo um papel à mesma. O funcionamento do VIPS estendido é descrito no capítulo 3, bem como a razão do foco na avaliação dos menus de páginas Web e em sistemas de gestão de conteúdos durante o processo de otimização do VIPS estendido. Inicialmente, avaliei 30 páginas geradas por um sistema de gestão de conteúdos, designado WordPress, e determinei que elementos eu considerava serem menus nessas páginas. Posteriormente, verifiquei se os elementos que eu considerava menus, também eram assinalados pelo VIPS estendido com esse mesmo papel. Os resultados obtidos não foram satisfatórios, o que me levou a melhorar as regras que classificavam as diferentes áreas da página. Após vários testes, cheguei a um resultado satisfatório, que não consegui melhorar mais. Neste ponto, a identificação de menus era bastante positiva, embora o número de falsos positivos também fosse bastante elevado na minha opinião. Com isto em mente, desenvolvi um filtro para detetar os falsos positivos. Através da observação dos resultados de vários testes, pude determinar que vários tipos de elementos eram considerados menus quando não o deveriam ser. Sabendo a tag do elemento posso evitar que elementos com essas tags sejam considerados menus. Desta maneira, os falsos positivos foram reduzidos e resultados foram melhorados ligeiramente. Estes resultados foram baseados na minha definição de menu e nas observações feitas no conjunto de 30 páginas Web geradas pelo sistema de gestão de conteúdos WordPress, pelo que precisava de validar o mecanismo desenvolvido. Para isto contruí um conjunto de outras 30 páginas Web, composto por 15 de páginas geradas por WordPress e outras 15 não geradas por WordPress. Os resultados obtidos nas 15 páginas geradas pelo WordPress foram iguais aos anteriores, o que é positivo, querendo dizer que as regras desenvolvidas são suficientemente genéricas. Em relação às 15 páginas não geradas pelo WordPress, os resultados superaram as expectativas, porque foram melhores que os anteriores. Como mencionei, o melhoramento das regras baseou-se na minha interpretação de menu, pelo que foi necessário testar se estas podiam ser consideradas gerais, ou seja, se outras pessoas consideram a mesma definição para menu. Para isto, realizei dois testes: o primeiro entrevistando peritos em acessibilidade e outro através de um questionário a utilizadores comuns. Os resultados obtidos divergiram tanto para peritos como para utilizadores. Um aspeto que foi unânime entre os três peritos entrevistados foi o facto de a definição de menu ser suscetível a interpretações, dependendo por vezes do contexto ou opinião pessoal. Um outro aspeto foi o facto de à medida que a entrevista progredia, mais elementos eram considerados menus ou pelo menos surgia a dúvida se seriam ou não. Não houve um consenso na opinião dos peritos, visto que um deles era muito restritivo, selecionando apenas o menu encontrado no cabeçalho ou rodapé das páginas e outro perito, considerava tudo o que fossem listas como menus. Em relação aos utilizadores, houve alguns menus selecionados constantemente (menus de navegação) e outros que geraram mais dúvidas, sendo um deles o elemento que contém os ícones das redes sociais. Após a classificação dos menus estar de acordo com o que pretendia, o próximo passo era implementar o VIPS estendido no QualWeb. Infelizmente, a ferramenta do VIPS estendido que estava a utilizar necessitava do ambiente onde estava implementado (no Eclipse) e portanto perguntei ao responsável pelo desenvolvimento do VIPS estendido se seria possível criar uma versão nova, em que o VIPS seria disponibilizado num Web service e desta maneira seria possível incorporá-lo no QualWeb. Com isto feito, as novas técnicas de acessibilidade, que são aplicadas a menus, puderam ser desenvolvidas. Para validar o desenvolvimento fiz uma análise pericial às 30 páginas Web de treino para conseguir comparar com os resultados das novas técnicas. Através dessa comparação, determinei que as técnicas foram implementadas corretamente.
The World Wide Web (WWW) is today a wide spread all-purpose technological platform, with a large quantity of information available, that is supposed to be accessible to everyone. However, this accessibility is not yet a reality. There are some people with disabilities that can’t have the same Web experience as the others. Web designers are becoming more aware of the problem that is the lack of accessible Web pages. The progressive adoption and implementation of specific standards and guidelines on the Web is increasing accessibility, ensuring that everyone has the same Web experience. These specific standards can be evaluated with Web accessibility evaluation tools, allowing Web designers and developers to evaluate their Web page’s accessibility. With this assessment, it is possible then to change the inaccessible source code. However, some of those guidelines need semantic knowledge, which is something that has not been implemented in the Web accessibility evaluation tools. With this purpose, my work focuses on developing and implementing a mechanism able to identify the semantic and syntactic structure of a Web page. This mechanism will rely on a segmentation tool, which separates a Web page into regions. The mechanism attributes to each region a role, which semantically represents its usage and purpose on the Web page. With this categorization, the accessibility standards and guidelines can be applied to the right elements. This document starts with a detailed introduction and goals for this work. Following, a review of the related work already done will be given, which include the concepts to understand the developed work as well as the description of the tools used. Then it will explain in detail the segmentation tool used and the initial analysis made, which was not satisfactory. The improvements to the segmentation tool and the results of each analysis will be presented in the next chapter. Next, the comparison of my evaluation with experts and users evaluations will be given. Finally, the integration of the developed mechanism into the accessibility evaluation tool will be presented, as well as the new developed techniques. At the end, a conclusion will summarize the work done and will include some future work relating to this topic.

Dans une société qui assiste à la confusion des territoires du privé et du
public, le culte du corps et la valorisation de normes esthétiques féminines
semblent littéralement envahir l’espace narratif et magnifier le dualisme entre
l’être et le paraître. Il va sans dire que cette nouvelle façon de penser et de
concevoir le corps, notamment le corps féminin, a une incidence sur l’écriture des
femmes contemporaines. Intimement lié à la construction identitaire du sujet, le
corps incarne dans les oeuvres littéraires une nouvelle « féminité » dont le présent
mémoire vise à explorer les paramètres littéraires, psychanalytiques et
sociologiques.
C’est dans le contexte d’une corporalité reconfigurée que l’inscription de la
triade corps/identité/féminité dans les textes littéraires de Nelly Arcan et de Marie-Sissi Labrèche sera étudiée par l’analyse d’oeuvres significatives publiées au début de ce troisième millénaire : Putain et À ciel ouvert, d’une part, Borderline et La Brèche, d’autre part. Le corps est au coeur de la quête identitaire des protagonistes présentées dans ces récits. Mais ce corps s’érigeant souvent en obstacle devient le lieu d’une difficile image de soi et contribue à renforcer l’agentivité négative, soit cette incapacité du sujet à tracer son avenir de manière positive, contre laquelle se battent les personnages féminins tout au long de la narration. C’est à ce propos que la position ambivalente des deux auteures est représentative des questions de filiation qui marquent la littérature contemporaine.In a society in which boundaries between the private and the public are confused, body worship and the prizing of women’s beauty standards seem to pervade fiction and magnify the dualism between being and appearing. The new way of thinking about and conceiving the body, the female body in particular, has certainly had an effect on contemporary women’s writing. Inasmuch as the body is entwined with the formation of the protagonist’s identity, it embodies a new femininity in literary works, of which this master’s thesis strives to explore the literary, psychoanalytical and sociological parameters. In the context of a remapped corporality, this thesis studies the body, identity and femininity in four contemporary novels: Putain and À ciel ouvert by Nelly Arcan, and Borderline and La Brèche by Marie-Sissi Labrèche. Although the body is at the heart of the protagonists’ search for identity, it also often constitutes a hurdle for them, resulting in a bad self-image and reinforcing the protagonists’ negative agency against which all the female characters are struggling. The authors’ ambivalent positions on this matter are representative of the filiation issues characterizing contemporary fiction.

This paper presents a case study of two models in bronze, belonging to the the legacy of Master Lagoa Henriques which, during the investigation, were identified as models of Sissi, the Empress Consort of Austria and the Queen Consort of Hungary (1837-1898), whose final sculpture is placed in the Casino Garden – Funchal, Madeira. The objective of this work lies in the study of materials and techniques used by the sculptor Lagoa Henriques, in the making of this sculpture, to obtain a deeper understanding of his artistic production methodology and enable additional data collection for future Conservation and Restoration interventions. In order to obtain a better understanding of this subject, the technologies of Sculpture at the level of the classical procedure are addressed. The processes and methods described apply to the construction of a sculpture of molten metal in rounded shape. Some of the key steps in the implementation of sculptural work are presented in a systematic way, such as modeling, casting, the scale modification techniques, melting technology and patination as surface finishing. This paper highlights the contribution of studying sculpture artistic production to Conservation and Restoration: the deep understanding of the used artistic production methods allows retrieving associate information regarding Conservation and Restoration interventions within the spirit of the artwork

Le présent mémoire étudie les relations mère-fille et les conséquences psychiques et textuelles qui en découlent, par le biais de deux romans québécois récents : Borderline de Marie-Sissi Labrèche et Putain de Nelly Arcan. Puisque, comme l'affirment les théoriciens du développement féminin, la relation entre une mère et sa fille est le pivot de l'identité féminine, la fille qui reçoit son éducation d'une mère défaillante subira d'importantes répercussions. J'analyse donc les comportements de la mère et leur incidence sur les filles du corpus en m'inspirant à la fois de la psychanalyse et des études littéraires féministes. Dans un premier chapitre, j'étudie la théorie psychanalytique en m'intéressant à l'approche freudienne, puis aux théoriciennes d'inspiration féministe. Il s'agit ainsi de montrer les liens entre la structure psychique féminine et l'écriture des femmes. Les deux chapitres suivants sont consacrés tour à tour à Borderline et à Putain. J'analyse les relations entre la mère et la fille afin de montrer que lorsqu'elles sont déficientes, elles donnent lieu à des identités scindées et à des relations avec autrui troubles. Ainsi, les deux protagonistes du corpus cherchent en vain, auprès des hommes, le regard tendre et gratifiant qu'elles n'ont pas reçu de la mère. Le présent mémoire, montre que la relation qu'a une fille avec sa mère détermine en grande partie sa vie d'adulte. Ainsi, les filles qui ont eu une enfance pénible sont et demeurent fragiles : elles portent en elles des séquelles et leur écriture en portera elle aussi la marque.

Dans Creep show, un narrateur présente ses creeps, les malades de son entourage, des schizophrènes inadéquatement nommés, afin de les ramener à la vie par ses mots. En se souvenant de certains moments où la folie se manifestait à lui, il veut déterrer ses ensevelis, les faire parler en leur prêtant son écriture. Dans un récit morcelé pouvant évoquer une galerie de portraits en mouvement, les protagonistes sont présentés comme des monstres, des rêveurs ou des sources d’inspiration selon le moment relaté par un narrateur affecté qui se replonge littéralement dans un passé s’échelonnant entre l’enfance et l’âge de dix-huit ans. Portant autant sur la maladie mentale que sur la honte et la peur des mots, Creep show est un texte sur le silence et l’impuissance, sur l’incapacité de nommer adéquatement la folie ; il s’agit d’un court récit de dix-sept scènes encadrées par un prologue et un épilogue où l’écriture d’un traumatisme se vit comme une histoire d’amour.
L’essai intitulé “Je est des autres.” De l’esthétique borderline chez Marie-Sissi Labrèche décrit la genèse d’une esthétique « borderline ». Dans une approche à la fois psychanalytique et narratologique, fondée sur les concepts de la mélancolie, du kitsch et de la crypte, l’analyse tente de montrer quel type de construction thématique et formelle soutient cette esthétique. À partir d’éléments représentatifs de l’univers de Marie-Sissi Labrèche (la question de la limite, la pulsion de mort, le rapport au corps et l’instabilité), l’essai s’intéresse à la façon dont la narratrice de Borderline (2000) donne à lire une identité sédimentaire, un autoportrait masqué-fêlé, où « Je est [des] autre[s] ». In a split narrative, which could evoke a collection of portraits in movement, the protagonists are presented as monsters, dreamers or sources of inspiration according to the narrator who literally dives back into the past. Presenting mental illness as the shame and the fear of the words, Creep show is a novel about silence and about the importance to understand adequately the insanity; it is a short narrative of seventeen scenes where the writing of a traumatism is experienced as a love story. The essay entitled “Je est des autres.” De l’esthétique borderline chez Marie-Sissi Labrèche describes the genesis of a “borderline” aesthetic. In a psychoanalytical and narratological approach established on the concepts of the melancholy, the kitsch and the crypt, the analysis tries to show which type of thematic and formal construction supports this aesthetic. With representative elements of the universe of Marie-Sissi Labrèche (the question of the limit, the death drive, the body obsession and the instability), the essay is interested in the way the narrator of Borderline ( 2000 ) offers a reading of the sedimentary identity and a misleading self-portrait. According to these elements of reflection, the hypothesis of a textual machine working in and by the instability (and the otherness) leads the analysis to the idea that writing the trauma could represent an attempt at reclaiming identity through the aesthetic called “borderline”.

Le phénomène du transfert intergénérationnel sous-tend la construction identitaire puisque, derrière elle, se dissimulent les marques signifiantes de l'histoire filiale, familiale et personnelle de 1'héritier. La structuration individuelle dépend grandement de l'aptitude des prédécesseurs filiaux à élaborer et à assimiler les entraves qui ont ponctué leur expérience de vie. D'une défaillance dans la mécanique d'introjection à l'incorporation entière d'un deuil, en passant par l'enkystement de fantômes, les expériences traumatiques ingérées contaminent tous les individus procédant de cette filiation. Puisqu'il est principalement inconscient, le legs psychique qui s'opère entre les diverses générations d'une même lignée filiale, expose la progéniture à s'adapter à quelconque héritage reçu, aussi déformateur qu'il soit. L'étude de la mécanique de transmission implique, ici, à la fois le phénomène générateur de passation et le processus de réceptivité qui résulte du défaut dans le transfert intergénéalogique. Dans Borderline (2000) puis dans La lune dans un HLM (2006), l'auteure Marie-Sissi Labrèche se penche sur la dynamique complexe que recèle l'héritage filial au féminin et sur les répercussions intrapsychiques qui en découlent. Prédéterminées par une hérédité psychique en défaillance, c'est au sein d'un microcosme féminin terré dans la mélancolie, que les protagonistes sont mises en scène dans les œuvres de Labrèche. Ancrées dans une problématique identificatoire depuis l'enfance, celles-ci se voient confrontées soit au bienveillant sacrifice, se risquant ainsi à être entièrement sacrifiées, soit à la quête de l'inconnu, s'exposant alors à une insoutenable culpabilité. En quête de sens, elles oscillent ainsi entre la contrainte de réciprocité filiale et la négation des origines. L'écriture introspective jalonnée d'émotions résiduelles liées à l'enfance et de fantasmes d'autocréation est tout à fait symptomatique de l'antinomie qu'avive la transmission psychique. S'inventer en métaphorisant son histoire de vie appose à l'identité de l'auteur une estampille de singularité, d'originalité, d'autoformation et de rupture tout en participant à la continuité et à la pérennité par l'acte de création lui-même.

Mémoire en recherche-créationKtf, la première partie de ce mémoire, est un récit au « je » qui tente de reproduire le parler des jeunes québécois. Il présente une vision des relations amoureuses au temps des nouvelles technologies à travers les yeux d’une jeune femme de 20 ans souffrant de dépendance affective. Le discours se double d’une réflexion sur l’endoctrinement par les discours sociaux qui poussent à accorder une grande importance au paraître. La narratrice, par son point de vue à la fois sarcastique et aliéné, s’attarde à raconter son banal quotidien, tout en reconduisant une multitude de stéréotypes et en pigeant allègrement dans le répertoire du kitsch et des pensées préconçues. Toutefois, grâce à son sens de l’autodérision, la narratrice insuffle à son récit une bonne dose de ridicule ce qui a pour effet de dévoiler le vide de sens qui sous-tend cette culture du paraître. La seconde partie de ce mémoire est un essai qui s’intéresse la culture populaire et au rire comme instruments de détournement des discours dominants et de la culture consacrée dans Borderline et La brèche de Marie-Sissi Labrèche. Cet essai en trois parties s’attarde d’abord à faire ressortir les références au tragique dans les deux récits de l’auteure, afin de montrer comment leurs héroïnes Sissi et Kiki sont oppressées par les grands discours du système officiel. Ensuite, les parties deux et trois portent sur le détournement que les narratrices font subir au tragique en le confrontant à diverses manifestations de la culture populaire comique, dont le kitsch, le grotesque, le ridicule, le carnavalesque et le trash.
Ktf, the first part of this M.A. Thesis, is a narrative that attempts to reproduce the orality of young people in Quebec. It presents a vision of love relationships in the age of new technologies through the eyes of a 20-years-old girl suffering from emotional dependence. The discourse is coupled with a reflection on indoctrination by social discourses that give great importance to appearing. The narrator, from her sarcastic and alienated point of view, dwells on her banal daily life, while reiterating a multitude of stereotypes and while gleefully pumping into kitsch repertoire and preconceived thoughts. However, thanks to her sense of self-deprecation, the narrator infuses her story with a good dose of ridicule, which has the effect of revealing the meaninglessness that underlies this culture of appearances. The second part is an essay on popular culture and laughter as instruments for diverting dominant discourses and consecrated culture in Borderline and La brèche by Marie-Sissi Labrèche. This three-part essay focuses first on highlighting references to tragedy in the author's two narratives, in order to show how their heroines Sissi and Kiki are oppressed by the great rhetoric of the official system. Then, parts two and three analyze how Labrèche turns away the tragic by confronting it with various manifestations of comic popular culture, including kitsch, grotesque, ridiculous, carnivalesque and trash.

Certaines de leurs œuvres ont fait scandale pour l’impudeur qui les caractériserait, d’autres pour leur violence ou leur appartenance supposée à la pornographie. Si ces textes témoignent de changements profonds au sein de la société, ils attirent également notre attention sur leur inscription manifeste hors des catégories génériques qu’ils semblaient indiquer. Ce mémoire rend compte de la façon dont À ciel ouvert de Nelly Arcan, Baise-moi de Virginie Despentes, La brèche de Marie-Sissi Labrèche, La vie sexuelle de Catherine M. de Catherine Millet et La nouvelle pornographie de Marie Nimier traitent la thématique du corps et du sexe. La politique des corps révèle que les récits d’aujourd’hui expriment, certainement aussi fortement que dans les années 1970, la nécessité de dissoudre et de réinventer les identités sexuées. De plus, une analyse centrée sur la notion de sujet telle qu’elle s’écrit dans la relation du plaisir et du désir montre que le thème sexuel est un moyen pour les auteures d’explorer une réalité qui devient flagrante lorsque les êtres de langage se mettent à habiter leur corps. Enfin, une lecture générique souligne toute la complexité de l’utilisation de la pornographie dans les récits étudiés et s’intéresse aux stratégies de légitimation indiquant vers quelle définition de la littérature tendent les auteures.Since the end of the 1990’s, a new generation of female writers started working on stories about the body and sexuality. Some of the narratives they develop drew attention because of the "shameless exhibitionism" they supposedly include, others because of their violence or what appears as a display of pornography. Those texts are evidence of deep changes occurring in our society, but moreover, they are interesting by their lack of respect for the literary conventions. This essay is about the way sex and body are depicted in À ciel ouvert by Nelly Arcan, Baise-moi by Virginie Despentes, La brèche by Marie-Sissi Labrèche, La vie sexuelle de Catherine M. by Catherine Millet and La nouvelle pornographie by Marie Nimier. The body is politics: it tells us that today, as much as in the 1970’s, sexual identities have to be dissolved and recreated. In addition, reading Arcan’s, Despentes’, Labrèche’s and Millet’s work while focalizing on what kind of subject is expressed via pleasure and desire shows that writing about sexuality can be a way of exploring human being when speech is useless. We will then see how the writers use pornography on a generic level and how they try and reconfigure our literary regime.
