Abstract:
Indoor space information extraction is an important aspect of reconstruction for building information modeling and a necessary process for geographic information system from outdoor to indoor. Entity model extracting methods provide advantages in terms of accuracy for building indoor spaces, as compared with network and grid model methods, and the extraction results can be converted into a network or grid model. However, existing entity model extracting methods based on a search loop do not consider the complex indoor environment of a building, such as isolated columns and walls or cross-floor spaces. In this study, such complex indoor environments are analyzed in detail, and a new approach for extracting buildings’ indoor space information is proposed. This approach is based on indoor space boundary calculation, the Boolean difference for single-floor space extraction, relationship reconstruction, and cross-floor space extraction. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can accurately extract indoor space information from the complex indoor environment of a building with geometric, semantic, and relationship information. This study is theoretically important for better understanding the complexity of indoor space extraction and practically important for improving the modeling accuracy of buildings.

Abstract:
This thesis tackles the time-frequency continuous variables degree of freedom encoding of single photons and examine the formal mathematical analogy with the quadrature continuous variables of the electromagnetic field. We define a new type of qubit which is robust against time-frequency displacement errors. We define a new double-cylinder phase space which is particularly adapted for states which have a translational symmetry. We also study how to build a functional phase space distribution which allows to describe a quantum state with spectral and quadrature continuous variables degrees of freedom

Abstract:
CubeSat missions needs components that are tolerant against the radiation in space. The hardware components must be reliable, and it must not compromise the functionality on-board during the mission. At the same time, the cost of hardware and its development should not be high. Hence, this thesis discusses the design and development of a CubeSat architecture using a Commercial Off-The- Shelf (COTS) Multi-Processor System on Chip (MPSoC). The architecture employs an affordable Rad-Hard Micro-Controller Unit as a Supervisor for the MPSoC. Also, it uses several radiation mitigation techniques such as the Latch-up protection circuit to protect it against Single-Event Latch-ups (SELs), Readback scrubbing for Non- Volatile Memories (NVMs) such as NOR Flash and Configuration scrubbing for the FPGA present in the MPSoC to protect it against Single-Event Upset (SEU)s, reliable communication using Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and Space packet protocol. Apart from such functionalities, the Supervisor executes tasks such as Watchdog that monitors the liveliness of the applications running in the MPSoC, data logging, performing Over-The-Air Software/Firmware update. The thesis work implements functionalities such as Communication, Readback memory scrubbing, Configuration scrubbing using SEM-IP, Watchdog, and Software/Firmware update. The execution times of the functionalities are presented for the application done in the Supervisor. As for the Configuration scrubbing that was implemented in Programmable Logic (PL)/FPGA, results of area and latency are reported.

Full text
Abstract:
Ochrona cyberprzestrzeni jest częścią przestrzeni wolności bezpieczeństwa i sprawiedliwości i pozostaje w ramach kompetencji dzielonych. Stanowi jednak problematykę wrażliwą i niejednoznaczną.
The protection of cyberspace is a part of the area of the freedom security and justice (AFSJ) and remains within the divided competences. However, it constitutes sensitive and ambiguous issue. According to the fundamental assumption, posed in this thesis, there is a clear need to take the actions by the European Union to create the system of cyberspace protection. The proposed system aims at providing the better effectiveness of the EU action as well as avoiding copying of subjects and doubling works of the EU institutions and bodies involved in discussed issues. In order to substantiate the assumption, put forward in the thesis, the current legal bases of the protection of cyberspace`s elements are moved closer and analysed. Basing on the methodology used in the thesis, i.e. formal-dogmatic, legal-comparative and historical-descriptive, the imperfect legal measures and gaps in this protection are indicated and the ways of their improvement are expressed.Taken subject is introduced in the light of the developing division of two directions of the EU actions in the scope of cyberspace protection, i.e. the network and information security in relation with the development of the information-communications technology and securing of users as well as their activities in cyberspace. The description of shown directions is presented from a perspective of appearing problems with creating legal basis as well as determining and distributing of the competence scopes between the EU and the Member States and legislative process on the European Union level. At the final stage of the research process the protection system of cyberspace in the European Union is described. Therefore, it is a need to adopt the detailed hypothesis according to which it is possible to implement such a system which will solve existing gaps and will refute the claims of both the EU`s multi-layered actions and accompanying them the competence chaos. This dissertation consists of six chapters in frames which the analyses of the current conditions of cyberspace protection are carried out in the light of the EU law as well as the needs and the possibilities of their change. The first three chapters are devoted to clarify the basic concepts related to cyberspace, present both the tendencies in the law being an outcome of the digitization process and appearing threats to the security in the digital space. Next chapters, i.e. fourth and fifth, have a research character. Using the formal-dogmatic and historical-descriptive methods allows to present the activities of the Member States and the European Union that stayed in the context of cyberspace protection. For the whole of thesis, the sixth chapter is an axis. In this part of the deliberation the results of analyses and findings of conducted examinations are presented which aim at formulating the author's system specification of cyberspace protection in the European Union based on the hybrid system. The innovative approach consists in merging three elements: substantive law of the protection of cyberspace, model PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) in cyberspace (Cyber-PDCA) and decentralised institutional system. The proposed system of cyberspace protection in the EU is based on four dimensions of actions: strategic, legal, proactive prevention and international. In the thesis three issues closely linked with cyberspace are also considered, which are regarded as the positive trends of digitalisation. All of them influence on creating of legal aspects of cyberspace. The concept of the Internet law, cyberlaw and cyberculture of the law constitute the objects widely presented in the literature indicating a new field in the law system. Moreover, an international dimension of the EU activity was taken into account with regard to current works and the EU initiatives in terms of connection between cyberspace protection in the internal dimension and the Common Foreign and Security Policy aspects.

Nikjah, Reza. "Performance evaluation and protocol design of fixed-rate and rateless coded relaying networks." Phd thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10048/1674.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of cooperative relaying communication in substituting for, or complementing, multiantenna systems is described, and a brief literature review is presented. Amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying are investigated and compared for a dual-hop relay channel. The optimal strategy, source and relay optimal power allocation, and maximum cooperative gain are determined for the relay channel. It is shown that while DF relaying is preferable to AF relaying for strong source-relay links, AF relaying leads to more gain for strong source-destination or relay-destination links. Superimposed and selection AF relaying are investigated for multirelay, dual-hop relaying. Selection AF relaying is shown to be globally strictly outage suboptimal. A necessary condition for the selection AF outage optimality, and an upper bound on the probability of this optimality are obtained. A near-optimal power allocation scheme is derived for superimposed AF relaying. The maximum instantaneous rates, outage probabilities, and average capacities of multirelay, dual-hop relaying schemes are obtained for superimposed, selection, and orthogonal DF relaying, each with parallel channel cooperation (PCC) or repetition-based cooperation (RC). It is observed that the PCC over RC gain can be as much as 4 dB for the outage probabilities and 8.5 dB for the average capacities. Increasing the number of relays deteriorates the capacity performance of orthogonal relaying, but improves the performances of the other schemes. The application of rateless codes to DF relaying networks is studied by investigating three single-relay protocols, one of which is new, and three novel, low complexity multirelay protocols for dual-hop networks. The maximum rate and minimum energy per bit and per symbol are derived for the single-relay protocols under a peak power and an average power constraint. The long-term average rate and energy per bit, and relay-to-source usage ratio (RSUR), a new performance measure, are evaluated for the single-relay and multirelay protocols. The new single-relay protocol is the most energy efficient single-relay scheme in most cases. All the multirelay protocols exhibit near-optimal rate performances, but are vastly different in the RSUR. Several future research directions for fixed-rate and rateless coded cooperative systems, and frameworks for comparing these systems, are suggested.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter reports on the third co-creation project described in this book. The project was managed by two departments of Zaragoza city council: the Department of Elderly Care and the Technical Office of Participation, Transparency and Open Government. Several activities aiming to improve the lives older citizens have been conducted by the city administration since Zaragoza joined the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. In a consultation process, older citizens had expressed a demand for safe and well-equipped outdoor spaces. Thus, the broad problem focus of this co-creation project was on the improvement of an age-friendly city infrastructure. The co-creation project covered six walks in three different districts. In each district, groups of six to eight older residents defined two relevant routes and collected information (problems and improvements) about them. The data was integrated in a collaborative digital map provided by the city’s Technical Office. The result of the project is an enhanced map service, which allows (older) citizens to report problems in the public (road) infrastructure and/or propose improvements. Their suggestions for improvements enter a list of citizen proposals for a participatory budgeting process.

Abstract:
AbstractConversational recommender systems have been introduced to provide users the opportunity to give feedback on items in a turn-based dialog until a final recommendation is accepted. Tourism is a complex domain for recommender systems because of high cost of recommending a wrong item and often relatively few ratings to learn user preferences. In a scenario such as recommending a city to visit, conversational content-based recommendation may be advantageous, since users often struggle to specify their preferences without concrete examples. However, critiquing item features comes with challenges. Users might request item characteristics during recommendation that do not exist in reality, for example demanding very high item quality for a very low price. To tackle this problem, we present a novel conversational user interface which focuses on revealing the trade-offs of choosing one item over another. The recommendations are driven by a utility function that assesses the user’s preference toward item features while learning the importance of the features to the user. This enables the system to guide the recommendation through the search space faster and accurately over prolonged interaction. We evaluated the system in an online study with 600 participants and find that our proposed paradigm leads to improved perceived accuracy and fewer conversational cycles compared to unit critiquing.

Abstract:
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in the 21st century needs to look very different from its 20th-century origins. Computers are becoming ubiquitous; they are disappearing into everyday objects. They are becoming wearable. They are able to communicate with each other autonomously, and they are becoming self-adaptive. Even with something as ubiquitous as the mobile phone, we see a system that actively searches out a stronger signal and autonomously switches transmitters. Predictive techniques allow phones to adapt (e.g., anticipate long telephone numbers). These changes in technologies require us to change our view of what HCI is. The typical view of how people interact with computers has been based primarily on a cognitive psychological analysis (Norman & Draper, 1986) of a single user using a single computer. This view sees the user as outside the computer. People have to translate their intentions into the language of the computer and interpret the computer’s response in terms of how successful they were in achieving their aims. This view of HCI leads to the famous gulfs of execution (the difficulty of translating human intentions into computer speak) and evaluation (trying to interpret the computer’s response). With the ubiquity of information appliances (Norman, 1999) or information artifacts (Benyon et al. 1999), the single-person, single-computer view of HCI becomes inadequate. We need to design for people surrounded by information artefacts. People no longer are simply interacting with a computer; they are interacting with people using various combinations of computers and media. As computing devices become increasingly pervasive, adaptive, embedded in other systems, and able to communicate autonomously, the human moves from outside to inside an information space. In the near future, the standard graphical user interface will disappear for many applications, the desktop will disappear, and the keyboard and mouse will disappear. Information artefacts will be embedded both in the physical environment and carried or worn by people as they move through that environment. This change in the nature of computing demands a change in the way we view HCI. We want to move people from outside a computer, looking in to the world of information, to seeing people as inside information space. When we think of having a meeting or having a meal, we do not see people as outside these activities. People are involved in the activity. They are engaged in the interactions. In an analogous fashion, we need to see people as inside the activities of information creation and exchange, as inside information space.

Abstract:
What is the process by which indigenous Amazonian people intensify their utilization of tropical forest resources, and what are the roles of population demography, settlement patterns, and resource degradation in this process? These are the central problems of this chapter. Over the last fifty years, ecologically oriented anthropologists have focused on these questions because of their significance for explaining the socioecological variability found among Amazonian Indians. A common theme in many attempts to account for socioecological variability in the Amazon is that large, sedentary populations necessitate increasing levels of social integration. Therefore, some explanations for this variability have sought factors that limit population density, such as the local availability of arable soils and protein-rich faunal foods. Simple single-factor frameworks have been criticized, yielding slightly more complex kinds of explanation, some based on evolutionary ecology and decision theory. Nevertheless, none of these approaches has successfully managed to relate population growth, village formation, resource degradation, and intensification of land use together in a single formalism that derives its first principles from a comparative analysis of the ethnographic literature. As a result, culture has not been assigned the central role it deserves in any theory purporting to characterize the process of land use intensification among indigenous Amazonians. This paper will review the ethnographic literature on the Amazon to (1) establish an empirical basis for the ingredients required to formulate cultural ecological theories of land-use intensification among indigenous Amazonians and (2) propose a developmental sequence based on increasing sedentism, intensification of land utilization, and growing market demand for production. Thus, this paper attempts to integrate seemingly disparate ideas from the past and present, each with some “ring of truth,” in the kind of mathematical framework advocated but never really achieved by Steward. The resulting paradigm converges on one very much resembling “land scape ecology,” but with greater emphasis on the role of culture and human decision making in a generative process. The need for detailed land-use data on a regional scale implicates the application of new technologies, such as remote sensing and geographical information systems, to test the proposed theories.

Abstract:
Each building sets up a topological space in the mathematical sense. Therefore every Building Information Model (BIM) has to store topological information. Such information can be found, for example, in the IFC (Liebich et al. 2005). The volume modelling part of the IFC uses a so-called ‘IfcTopologyResource’ which is a topological model on the local scope of each single building element. At a global scope, the ‘IfcRelConnects’ class and its subclasses are used for the connectivity of the building parts. This chapter presents a generalizing concept which handles both “local” and “global” connectivity information in a common way and provides means to mutually relate them.

Abstract:
Change-point mechanisms are shown to be significant in the design of surface micromachined MEMS. The design space of change-point mechanisms is derived for an arbitrary single loop change-point mechanism using a global and local approach. A function on the design space, the mechanism’s length, is constructed for fourbars. An inversion operator, a mapping from the design space to the design space, is also constructed for fourbars. The method for constructing the function and the operator is shown to be capable of extension to single loop change-point mechanisms with five or more links. The results give insight into design possibilities and limitations of change-point mechanisms.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the main forms of visualization in the media related to photo. The thematic visual concepts are described in accordance with the content of electronic media, which consider the impact of modern technologies on the development of media space. The researches of the Ukrainian and foreign educational institutions concerning the main features of modern photo is classificate. Modifications and new visual forms in the media are singled out. The main objective of the article is to study the visual concepts of modern photo and identify ideological and thematic priorities in photo projects. To achieve the main objective in the article a certain methodology were used. Due to the historical-theoretical description it was possible to substantiate the study of visual concepts. The conceptual-system method was used to study the subject of media photo projects. The main results of the research are the definition of visual concepts of photo on the example of electronic media and the identification of the main thematic features in the process of visual filling of the media space. Based on the study, we can conclude that today the information field needs quality visual content. For successful creation of visual concepts it is necessary to single out thematic features of modern photo and to carry out classifications on ideological and semantic signs. Given the rapid development of digital technologies, the topic of the scientific article we offer is relevant for scientists, journalists, media researchers, visual journalism experts and photojournalists. Modern space is filled with a large number of pictorial materials, which in most cases form specific images, patterns or stereotypes in the mind of the reader (viewer). Also important is the classification of photo used in journalistic publications. That is why there is a need to explore the content and principles of distribution of ideological priorities of photo in the media. The substantiation of scientists about the important place of photography in the modern media space and the future development of visual technologies, which already use artificial intelligence, is relevant.

Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data System (SIFIDS): Work package 1 final report: Review and optimisation of shellfish data collection strategies for Scottish inshore waters. Edited by Hannah Ladd-Jones and Mark James. Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS), 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.15664/10023.23379.

Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] The collection of additional data to facilitate fisheries management has been identified as a priority at the national level via the Scottish Inshore Fisheries Strategy, and at the local level in the management plans of Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups. Data collection implemented by industry offers a potentially cost effective means by which to provide additional information to enhance current stock assessment programmes, and to produce empirical indicators to inform fisheries management. The fundamental driver for data collection should be the purpose for which it is required; however, the regionalisation of fisheries management and increased, and often competing, demands, on our marine space mean that there are many potential uses for industry derived data. This report presents the findings of a single work package in the wider prototypic Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data System (SIFIDS) project; looking at ways in which inshore fisheries data collection can be improved on. The propose of this work package was to review and evaluate current inshore (shellfish) fisheries data collection and stock assessments in order to determine where it might be possible for industry derived data collection to provide a positive contribution. For the purposes of this work package the focus was limited to brown crab, lobsters, and scallops.

Abstract:
Foundational education system commonly referred to as K-12 school education is fundamental for people to succeed in life as noted in United Nations declaration of human rights. Consequently, decades of investments have helped K-12 sector evolve and respond to new demands but many of the traditional thinking has remained and thus hinder agility and disruptive evolution of the system. In most countries the national school education systems are perhaps the largest single enterprise and subjected to socio-cultural, economic and political influences, which in turn make it reluctant and/or difficult to change the system. However, as the world transitions from industrial revolution to information revolution and now to knowledge economy, the foundational education sector has been confronted with several simultaneous challenges. The monograph reviews and analyses how these challenges may be supported in a system that is reliant on traditional rigid time frames and confronted by complex external pressures that are blurring the boundaries of the school education landscape. It is apparent that doing more of the same may not provide the necessary solutions. There is a need to explore new opportunities for reforming the school education space, including system structures, human resources, curriculum designs, and delivery strategies. This analytical work critiques current practices to encourage K-12 educators recognize the need to evolve and embrace disruptions in a culture that tends to be wary of change. The key considerations identified through this analytical work is presented as a set of recommendations captured under four broad areas commonly used in school improvement literature

Abstract:
Our study’s main object is travel anthropology, the branch of science that studies the history and nature of man, socio-cultural space, social relations, and structures by gathering information during short and long journeys. The publication aims to research the theoretical foundations and genesis of travel anthropology, outline its fundamental principles, and highlight interaction with related sciences. The article’s defining objectives are the analysis of the synthesis of fundamental research approaches in travel anthropology and their implementation in journalism. When we analyze what methods are used by modern authors, also called «cultural observers», we can return to the localization strategy, namely the centering of the culture around a particular place, village, or another spatial object. It is about the participants-observers and how the workplace is limited in space and time and the broader concept of fieldwork. Some disciplinary practices are confused with today’s complex, interactive cultural conjunctures, leading us to think of a laboratory of controlled observations. Indeed, disciplinary approaches have changed since Malinowski’s time. Based on the experience of fieldwork of Svitlana Aleksievich, Katarzyna Kwiatkowska-Moskalewicz, or Malgorzata Reimer, we can conclude that in modern journalism, where the tools of travel anthropology are used, the practical methods of complexity, reflexivity, principles of openness, and semiotics are decisive. Their authors implement both for stable localization and for a prevailing transition.

Abstract:
The trees, developed green spaces, and natural areas within the City of Austin’s 400,882 acres will face direct and indirect impacts from a changing climate over the 21st century. This assessment evaluates the vulnerability of urban trees and natural and developed landscapes within the City Austin to a range of future climates. We synthesized and summarized information on the contemporary landscape, provided information on past climate trends, and illustrated a range of projected future climates. We used this information to inform models of habitat suitability for trees native to the area. Projected shifts in plant hardiness and heat zones were used to understand how less common native species, nonnative species, and cultivars may tolerate future conditions. We also assessed the adaptability of planted and naturally occurring trees to stressors that may not be accounted for in habitat suitability models such as drought, flooding, wind damage, and air pollution. The summary of the contemporary landscape identifies major stressors currently threatening trees and forests in Austin. Major current threats to the region’s urban forest include invasive species, pests and disease, and development. Austin has been warming at a rate of about 0.4°F per decade since measurements began in 1938 and temperature is expected to increase by 5 to 10°F by the end of this century compared to the most recent 30-year average. Both increases in heavy rain events and severe droughts are projected for the future, and the overall balance of precipitation and temperature may shift Austin’s climate to be more similar to the arid Southwest. Species distribution modeling of native trees suggests that suitable habitat may decrease for 14 primarily northern species, and increase for four more southern species. An analysis of tree species vulnerability that combines model projections, shifts in hardiness and heat zones, and adaptive capacity showed that only 3% of the trees estimated to be present in Austin based on the most recent Urban FIA estimate were considered to have low vulnerability in developed areas. Using a panel of local experts, we also assessed the vulnerability of developed and natural areas. All areas were rated as having moderate to moderate-high vulnerability, but the underlying factors driving that vulnerability differed by natural community and between East and West Austin. These projected changes in climate and their associated impacts and vulnerabilities will have important implications for urban forest management, including the planting and maintenance of street and park trees, management of natural areas, and long-term planning.

Abstract:
Constraints on water resources and the environment necessitate more efficient use of water. The key to efficient management is an understanding of the physical and physiological processes occurring in the soil-root hydraulic continuum. While both soil and plant leaf water potentials are well understood, modeled and measured, the root-soil interface where actual uptake processes occur has not been sufficiently studied. The water potential at the root-soil interface (yᵣₒₒₜ), determined by environmental conditions and by soil and plant hydraulic properties, serves as a boundary value in soil and plant uptake equations. In this work, we propose to 1) refine and implement a method for measuring yᵣₒₒₜ; 2) measure yᵣₒₒₜ, water uptake and root hydraulic conductivity for wild type tomato and Arabidopsis under varied q, K⁺, Na⁺ and Cl⁻ levels in the root zone; 3) verify the role of MIPs and ion channels response to q, K⁺ and Na⁺ levels in Arabidopsis and tomato; 4) study the relationships between yᵣₒₒₜ and root hydraulic conductivity for various crops representing important botanical and agricultural species, under conditions of varying soil types, water contents and salinity; and 5) integrate the above to water uptake term(s) to be implemented in models. We have made significant progress toward establishing the efficacy of the emittensiometer and on the molecular biology studies. We have added an additional method for measuring ψᵣₒₒₜ. High-frequency water application through the water source while the plant emerges and becomes established encourages roots to develop towards and into the water source itself. The yᵣₒₒₜ and yₛₒᵢₗ values reflected wetting and drying processes in the rhizosphere and in the bulk soil. Thus, yᵣₒₒₜ can be manipulated by changing irrigation level and frequency. An important and surprising finding resulting from the current research is the obtained yᵣₒₒₜ value. The yᵣₒₒₜ measured using the three different methods: emittensiometer, micro-tensiometer and MRI imaging in both sunflower, tomato and corn plants fell in the same range and were higher by one to three orders of magnitude from the values of -600 to -15,000 cm suggested in the literature. We have added additional information on the regulation of aquaporins and transporters at the transcript and protein levels, particularly under stress. Our preliminary results show that overexpression of one aquaporin gene in tomato dramatically increases its transpiration level (unpublished results). Based on this information, we started screening mutants for other aquaporin genes. During the feasibility testing year, we identified homozygous mutants for eight aquaporin genes, including six mutants for five of the PIP2 genes. Including the homozygous mutants directly available at the ABRC seed stock center, we now have mutants for 11 of the 19 aquaporin genes of interest. Currently, we are screening mutants for other aquaporin genes and ion transporter genes. Understanding plant water uptake under stress is essential for the further advancement of molecular plant stress tolerance work as well as for efficient use of water in agriculture. Virtually all of Israel’s agriculture and about 40% of US agriculture is made possible by irrigation. Both countries face increasing risk of water shortages as urban requirements grow. Both countries will have to find methods of protecting the soil resource while conserving water resources—goals that appear to be in direct conflict. The climate-plant-soil-water system is nonlinear with many feedback mechanisms. Conceptual plant uptake and growth models and mechanism-based computer-simulation models will be valuable tools in developing irrigation regimes and methods that maximize the efficiency of agricultural water. This proposal will contribute to the development of these models by providing critical information on water extraction by the plant that will result in improved predictions of both water requirements and crop yields. Plant water use and plant response to environmental conditions cannot possibly be understood by using the tools and language of a single scientific discipline. This proposal links the disciplines of soil physics and soil physical chemistry with plant physiology and molecular biology in order to correctly treat and understand the soil-plant interface in terms of integrated comprehension. Results from the project will contribute to a mechanistic understanding of the SPAC and will inspire continued multidisciplinary research.
