Abstract:
Objectives: Mindfulness has been explored in the clinical and educational fields but has rarely been studied in the music domain. This study investigated the effects of teaching eight-week Mindfulness for Singers courses on vocalists’ music education and performance. Methods: A mixed methods approach was utilized, which included controlled and randomized controlled trials using standardized and novel mindfulness measures pre- and post-intervention, interviews post-intervention and three months later, concurrent diaries, and a blinded teacher study. Participants included singing students (total n=52) and their teachers ( n=11) from a university and a music college over a period of two years. Results: Levels of mindfulness increased over the intervention for experimental participants in comparison to controls. Considering their total student cohort, teachers identified 61% of eligible mindfulness singing participants as having completed the mindfulness intervention. Experimental participants reported that learning mindfulness had positive effects in lessons, solo and group instrumental practices, and when performing on stage. They described more focus and attention, positive effects of increased body awareness on singing technique, enhanced socio-collaborative relationships, reductions in performance anxiety, and beneficial effects whilst performing, such as more expressivity and enjoyment. Conclusions: Learning mindfulness had positive holistic effects on vocal students and was well received by their mindfulness-naïve singing teachers. Findings suggest that it would be highly beneficial for mindfulness to be made available in music conservatoires and university music departments alongside singing lessons for singers to enhance their present experience as vocal students and their futures as performers and teachers.

The art of music is an important part of human culture. Vocal music art is closely related to traditional culture. Different social, historical and cultural factors of different nationalities have injected different ideological and cultural connotations into vocal music art. In their respective cultural atmosphere, vocal music art presents very different forms of expression. The traditional cultural concepts and national psychological consciousness formed under different religious backgrounds affect the traditional artistic concepts and the trend of vocal music art, and finally lead to the differences between Chinese and Western vocal music art and cultural aesthetics.

Abstract:
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the effect of formative assessment strategies on second grade students’ singing accuracy and to examine how music educators planned for and enacted these practices. Student participants ( n = 63) were divided into three groups over a six-week period: (a) a partial treatment group where the teacher used data from the pretest to improve areas of singing weakness; (b) a full treatment group where the teacher used data to improve areas of weakness and engaged students in self- and peer-assessment techniques; and (c) a control group who received no formalized treatment. Linear regression analysis indicates that the “partial treatment” group had the largest gains in singing accuracy, but the case study analysis revealed that the teachers’ knowledge and values mediated their enactment of these practices as they adopted and adapted them in varied ways. The “partial treatment” teacher’s motivation and proclivity for creating new assessment practices indicates that gains in this group’s singing accuracy may have been due to teacher effects and not the strategies themselves. Implications for teacher professional development and practical considerations for embedding meaningful formative assessment in music contexts are provided.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to present the teaching methods of Serbian traditional singing at the Department of Ethnomusicology at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade from 1998 (when this practice was introduced) to the present day. During many years of work, traditional singing has become an academic discipline having its developed methods and principles of work. The transmission of knowledge is carried out within two activities, where the first one entails knowledge of the basic characteristics of singing practice (theoretical knowledge), while the second one requires being familiar with the skill of singing (practical knowledge). These two directions are intertwined, since learning Serbian traditional singing without theoretical knowledge is practically impossible. In addition to considering the way in which singing is taught, special attention will be paid to the singing body, that is, body (somatic) memory as part of the educational process. By institutionalizing and teaching academic musicians the skill of traditional singing, the preservation and continuity of the rare techniques and styles of singing as a segment of the intangible cultural heritage is ensured. Studying Serbian traditional singing at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, enables the students to transfer the acquired knowledge within the framework of formal and informal education and thus contribute to the sustainability of this practice.

Abstract:
What constitutes “good singing” can be hotly contested amongst singing voice pedagogues, yet little is known about what the general public considers to be “good singing”. Within a program of research on musical identity and singing self-concept, this mixed-methods pilot study considered how members of the public (N = 52) described and evaluated stylistically different versions of a sung melody to test a hypothesis that reality TV singing may be deemed as “good singing”. Participants were exposed to three versions of “Happy Birthday”: 1) amateurs singing “as they would normally sing”; 2) professionals performing a “plain” version; 3) the same professionals singing an embellished version in the style of The Voice reality TV show. Results indicate that both professional versions were considered “better singing” than the amateur singing. While respondents focused on the technical deficiencies for amateurs, descriptions of the professionals concerned style. Stated exemplars of “good singing” were split between the two professional versions—based on sophistication and creativity (“professional: embellished”) or vocal quality (“professional: plain”). While respondents’ preferred version largely matched their chosen exemplar of “good singing”, participants were more likely to sing along with the “amateur” version. Implications for singing voice pedagogy and engagement in singing activities for wellbeing are considered.

Abstract:
Object In an attempt to identify cortical areas involved in singing in addition to language areas, the authors used a singing task during direct cortical mapping in 5 patients who were amateur singers and had undergone surgery for brain tumors. The organization of the cortical areas involved in language and singing was analyzed in relation with these surgical data. Methods One left-handed and 4 right-handed patients with brain tumors in left (2 cases) and right (3 cases) hemispheres and no significant language or singing deficits underwent surgery with the “awake surgery” technique. All patients had a special interest in singing and were involved in amateur singing activities. They were tested using naming, reading, and singing tasks. Results Outside primary sensorimotor areas, singing interferences were rare and were exclusively localized in small cortical areas (< 1 cm2). A clear distinction was found between speech and singing in the Broca region. In the Broca region, no singing interference was found in areas in which interference in naming and reading tasks were detected. Conversely, a specific singing interference was found in nondominant middle frontal gyri in one patient. This interference consisted of abrupt singing arrest without apparent face, mouth, and tongue contraction. Finally, nonspecific singing interferences were found in the right and left precentral gyri in all patients (probably by interference in final articulatory mechanisms of singing). Conclusions Dissociations between speech and singing found outside primary sensorimotor areas showed that these 2 functions use, in some cortical stages, different cerebral pathways.

Abstract:
This paper constructs a vocal singing training optimization model based on multimedia data analysis and conducts in-depth research and analysis on the optimization of vocal singing training methods using multimedia data analysis system. For the problems of poor real-time and large analysis error of the traditional system, a massive real-time multimedia data analysis system based on DSP is designed, with high-speed DSP as the core architecture, multipoint modeling of the experimenter, and data extraction and fusion processing are completed with model association characteristics as the analysis basis. The experimental results show that the real-time performance and accuracy of the system are improved by 15.14% and 13.42%, respectively. To address the time-space domain consistency problem in traditional time series data forecasting, two high-order time series forecasting algorithms based on tensor decomposition are proposed in this paper: the multilinear orthogonal autoregressive model and the multilinear constrained autoregressive model. Using the local structure information of the data to reduce the dimensionality of the data is more beneficial to extract the true low-dimensional representation of the data. Most current supervised cross-modal retrieval methods use a strict binary label matrix (i.e., 0 and 1); however, the interval between labels 0 and 1 is small, which may increase the risk of classification errors. To solve some of the above existing problems, a two-stage hashing method based on smooth matrix decomposition and label relaxation is proposed, which proposes a novel label relaxation strategy that can adaptively control the interval between label intervals and can reduce the quantization loss by about 5.21%. The multimedia data analysis vocal singing training optimization model designed in this paper can improve enhance students’ motivation and accuracy and provide technical support and a rational basis for vocal singing practice and overall musical expression.

Abstract:
Aim: This mixed-methods exploratory study investigates the perceived health benefits of singing in a choir from an international sample of choristers. Method: An online questionnaire including demographic information, 28 quantitative statements and two qualitative questions relating to the perceived health benefits of singing in a choir was distributed via email and social media over a period of 4 months to a sample of 1,779 choristers. Basic descriptives and comparisons between subgroups of the sample are presented along with thematic analysis of qualitative comments. Results: Basic descriptives suggest an overwhelmingly positive response. Females scored significantly higher than males on physical benefits, social benefits and emotional benefits. Professional singers reported significantly more physical, social and spiritual benefits than amateur singers. Bias may be present in these findings as the results were entirely self-reported by people who already sing in choirs. Qualitative thematic analysis identified six key themes which may counter this bias by providing deeper understanding of the perceived benefits for choir singers. These include social connection, physical and physiological benefits (specifically respiratory health), cognitive stimulation, mental health, enjoyment and transcendence. Conclusion: Choral singing elicits a positive response in the chorister across a plethora of domains. This research confirms previous findings on the health benefits of singing but offers evidence from the largest sample of singers to date. However, results are based on self-perceptions of choristers, and findings are, therefore, limited. Results may be used as a base on which to develop further research in this area. It also provides confirmatory evidence to support choral singing as a means of improving wellbeing in many populations, including but not limited to workplaces, schools, nursing homes, communities and churches.

Studies comparing solo singing to doubled singing indicate contrasting findings as to whether children evince superior solo or doubled singing. Previous findings have indicated: (a) superior solo singing; (b) superior doubled singing; or (c) no significant difference. A systematic review of studies meeting the inclusion criteria ( N = 6) was undertaken to examine factors leading to these conflicting results. Next, a calculation of effect sizes that were unreported in previous research was based on published ANOVA tables, and expressed using Partial Eta-Squared. In direct comparisons of solo to doubled singing conditions, two studies reported that children sing more accurately in doubled singing; two studies reported more accurate solo singing; and two studies reported no significant difference by performance in the two conditions. The results indicate medium-to-large effect sizes in both directions. Several factors were enumerated to explain the contrasting findings: test administration procedures, song familiarity, vocal models, scoring methods, and teacher/researcher familiarity among the participants.

The identified features of authentic intonation-formulaic education and the study resulted singing fund of children’s song folklore became “key” and end-to-end mechanisms in the author’s method of forming and developing skills of sustainable singing intonation with each participant in the educational process aimed at preserving and further developing the traditions of Novgorod folk-song creation. Based on the study of the general-style singing specifics, vocal-phonation and polyphonic texture of ensemble singing of Novgorod authentic singers developed local-style singing classification, which, according to the terminology of the author of the article, Novgorod folk-singing styles are: old Slavic, Old Russian, part singing, as well as four mixed folk-singing styles. The differentiating mechanism of classification is the potential of the applied types of folk vocal phonation, polyphony in the ensemble singing and the type of singing articulation. On this local-style foundation, the author formed a specific Novgorod mixed folk-singing style, combining locally-style folk-singing technologies of Novgorod authentic performers and the academic school of Russian folk singing. This style is used in the singing of teachers and students of the Novgorod Children’s Music School of Russian Folklore. The implementation of the technologies developed by the author in pedagogical practice helps children achieve a high level of singing training and become ethno performer, a future ethnophore and a bearer of Russian local / regional folk song traditions.

Abstract:
Singing voice detection or vocal detection is a classification task that determines whether there is a singing voice in a given audio segment. This process is a crucial preprocessing step that can be used to improve the performance of other tasks such as automatic lyrics alignment, singing melody transcription, singing voice separation, vocal melody extraction, and many more. This paper presents a survey on the techniques of singing voice detection with a deep focus on state-of-the-art algorithms such as convolutional LSTM and GRU-RNN. It illustrates a comparison between existing methods for singing voice detection, mainly based on the Jamendo and RWC datasets. Long-term recurrent convolutional networks have reached impressive results on public datasets. The main goal of the present paper is to investigate both classical and state-of-the-art approaches to singing voice detection.

Abstract:
Style transfer for out-of-domain (OOD) singing voice synthesis (SVS) focuses on generating high-quality singing voices with unseen styles (such as timbre, emotion, pronunciation, and articulation skills) derived from reference singing voice samples. However, the endeavor to model the intricate nuances of singing voice styles is an arduous task, as singing voices possess a remarkable degree of expressiveness. Moreover, existing SVS methods encounter a decline in the quality of synthesized singing voices in OOD scenarios, as they rest upon the assumption that the target vocal attributes are discernible during the training phase. To overcome these challenges, we propose StyleSinger, the first singing voice synthesis model for zero-shot style transfer of out-of-domain reference singing voice samples. StyleSinger incorporates two critical approaches for enhanced effectiveness: 1) the Residual Style Adaptor (RSA) which employs a residual quantization module to capture diverse style characteristics in singing voices, and 2) the Uncertainty Modeling Layer Normalization (UMLN) to perturb the style attributes within the content representation during the training phase and thus improve the model generalization. Our extensive evaluations in zero-shot style transfer undeniably establish that StyleSinger outperforms baseline models in both audio quality and similarity to the reference singing voice samples. Abstract:
IntroductionPsychosocial interventions have been shown to improve mood, relieve stress and improve quality of life for people living with dementia (PwD). To date, most evaluations of singing interventions have focused on the benefits for PwD and not their carers. This research aims to evaluate the benefits of dementia singing groups for both PwD and their carers. Methods and analysisThis 2-year project will observe the impact of two different singing intervention services, one combining singing alongside dance and another that includes a sociable lunch. This project will aim to recruit a total of n=150 PwD and n=150 carers across the two singing interventions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the influence of both services will be analysed via the following outcome measures: quality of life, neuropsychiatric symptoms, social isolation, loneliness, cognition, carer burden and depressive symptoms in PwD and their carers using a prestudy/poststudy design. Regression models will be used to analyse the data with time (pre/post) as the exposure variable. Semistructured interviews will be conducted with a subset of people (n=40) to further investigate the impact of singing services with a specific focus on the acceptability of the interventions, barriers to access and prolonged engagement and potential for remote delivery. Interview data will be analysed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis, and public advisers will assist with coding the transcripts. A social return on investment analysis will be conducted to determine the social impact of the services.Ethics and disseminationThis project has received ethical approval from the University of Liverpool’s Ethics Committee (App ref: 12374) and Lancaster University’s Ethics Committee (App ref: 3442). All participants will provide informed consent to participate. Results will be presented at national and international conferences, published in scientific journals and publicly disseminated to key stakeholders.

Abstract:
This research aims to reveal teachers' efforts to improve the numeracy of lower grade elementary school students using singing and Jarimatika methods. This research is a type of qualitative research with a case study approach. Research data was collected from elementary school teachers and low-grade elementary school students using observation and interviews. The results of the research show that the teacher's efforts to integrate the singing and Jarimatika methods were carried out using the song "Balonku Ada Lima" whose lyrics were replaced with addition and subtraction rules using the Jarimatika method. Jarimatika rules are taught by singing while simulating number symbols to introduce the concept of place value. Improving number operation skills is carried out by combining the concept of scaffolding, peer tutoring, and drill and practice of calculating using Jarimatika. This combination of methods aims to make it easier for students to strengthen their numeracy skills using Jarimatika method.

Abstract:
This study investigates the current situation regarding singing in Norwegian kindergartens. More specifically, how often kindergartens offer singing possibilities to children, in what situations singing is embedded, how valued singing is in such institutions, what singing methods and repertoires the teachers use, and whether teachers have certain underlying goals and beliefs connected to their use of singing. Furthermore, we are interested in whether there are contextual factors that influence the singing practice of a kindergarten/teacher. This exploratory cross-sectional study uses a web-based questionnaire, and the sample consists of 660 Norwegian kindergarten teachers. The statistical analyses cover standard descriptive and inferential statistics. The study’s main findings are as follows: (1) singing is highly valued in most kindergartens; (2) singing is done “very often” in most kindergartens, and the majority of teachers report that they sing with the children daily in a large variety of situations and using mainly Norwegian songs – however, the actual frequency and amount of singing depends on various factors; (3) one of the most important factors regarding singing praxis is musical expertise of teachers, regarding which most teachers rate themselves as below the population average; (4) the teachers mainly sing unaccompanied with the children; (5) they learn new songs mainly through streaming services; and (6) the teachers assume that singing leads to especially positive psychological, social, and cognitive effects on children.

Abstract:
Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) have a major role in modern electronic devices due to their small price and size, large range of capacitance, small ESL and ESR, and good frequency response. Unfortunately, the main dielectric material used for MLCCs, Barium Titanate, makes the capacitors vibrate due to the piezoelectric and electrostrictive effects. This vibration is transferred to the PCB, making it resonate in the audible range of 20 Hz–20 kHz, and in this way the singing capacitors phenomenon occurs. This phenomenon is usually measured with a microphone, to measure the sound pressure level, or with a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV), to measure the vibration. Besides this, other methods are mentioned in the literature, for example, the optical fiber and the active excitation method. There are several solutions to attenuate or even eliminate the acoustic noise caused by MLCC. Specially designed capacitors for low acoustic levels and different layout geometries are only two options found in the literature. To prevent the singing capacitor phenomenon, different simulations can be performed, the harmonic analysis being the most popular technique. This paper is an up-to-date review of the acoustic noise caused by MLCCs in electronic devices, containing measurements methodologies, solutions, and simulation methods.

Abstract:
Important individual differences characterize singing in adult nonmusicians. In spite of the fact that the majority can carry a tune, some occasional singers are particularly inaccurate or imprecise in producing or imitating pitch (poor-pitch singers). Poor-pitch singing can be defined via acoustical analyses of vocal performances. In spite of the objective nature of this method, however, to date there is not a standard strategy for identifying and describing poor-pitch singers. Different tasks (e.g., singing from memory vs. imitation), cut-offs (50 cents, 100 cents, vs. variable criteria), and metrics (e.g., accuracy vs. precision) are typically used for assessing singing proficiency. Here the pros and cons of different methods and measurements are discussed. The boundary between poor-pitch singing and good singing depends on these factors, which should be carefully taken into account when assessing singing abilities. An approach based on multiple tasks sharing a common set of measures of singing accuracy and precision, with a relative cut-off (i.e., 2 SD from the average of a normative group) is favored for identifying poor-pitch singers.

Abstract:
Introduction. The traditional way of facilitating a good singing voice has been achieved through rigorous voice training. In modern days, however, there are some aspects of the singing voice that can be enhanced through digital processing. Although in the past, the frequency or intensity manipulations had to be achieved through the various singing techniques of the singer, technology today allows the singing voice to be enhanced from the instruments within recording studios. In essence, the traditional voice pedagogy and the evolution of digital audio processing both strive to achieve a better quality of the singing voice, but with different methods. Nevertheless, the major aspects of how the singing voice can be manipulated are not communicated among the professionals in each field. Objective. This paper offers insights as to how the quality of the singing voice can be changed physiologically through the traditional ways of voice training, and also digitally through various instruments that are now available in recording studios. Reflection. The ways in which singers train their voice must be mediated with the audio technology that is available today. Although there are aspects in which digital technology can aid the singer’s voice, there remain areas in which the singers must train their singing system at a physiological level to produce a better singing voice.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the origin and development of the art of singing and its pedagogic benefits. Throughout the history of mankind, singing has always been important in human society, contributing to the spiritual and cultural development of people. In music pedagogy, singing is believed to be the content that unquestionably enables the musical and overall development of students. For that reason, it is necessary to permanently and in different ways motivate students to practice music in primary school. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to present the development of singing in a broader cultural and historical context, which in a certain way should allow students to become interested in singing and to get more acquainted with this type of musical expression. Getting more insight into the origin and development of singing requires establishing a correlation with other subjects (history, literature, arts, etc.), which will result in a more complete picture of this type of human expression, its importance throughout history, and contribute to developing students' motivation to participate in singing activity, as well as to get them to love and respect art in general. The theoretical analysis and synthesis methods were used when researching this issue.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT It is assumed that singing is a highly complex activity, which requires the activation and interconnection of sensorimotor areas. The aim of the current research was to present the evidence from neuroimaging studies in the performance of the motor and sensory system in the process of singing. Research articles on the characteristics of human singing analyzed by neuroimaging, which were published between 1990 and 2016, and indexed and listed in databases such as PubMed, BIREME, Lilacs, Web of Science, Scopus, and EBSCO were chosen for this systematic review. A total of 9 articles, employing magnetoencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and electrocorticography were chosen. These neuroimaging approaches enabled the identification of a neural network interconnecting the spoken and singing voice, to identify, modulate, and correct pitch. This network changed with the singer's training, variations in melodic structure and harmonized singing, amusia, and the relationship among the brain areas that are responsible for speech, singing, and the persistence of musicality. Since knowledge of the neural networks that control singing is still scarce, the use of neuroimaging methods to elucidate these pathways should be a focus of future research.

Abstract:
Aims: (1) To catalogue and map all singing for health and wellbeing groups in the Republic of Ireland (ROI); (2) determine how they prioritise health outcomes; (3) understand what they consider success; and (4) identify gaps in provision. Methods: A novel mixed-methods survey was distributed electronically through SING Ireland (the Choir Association of Ireland), artsandhealth.ie, and to 2736 potential stakeholders with links to singing for health and wellbeing and singing on social prescription (SSP) from October 2020 to April 2021. Thematic analysis was used to analyse four open-ended survey questions. Results: A total of 185 singing for health and wellbeing groups were identified, with varied representation in each of the ROI’s 26 counties. 35 groups were noted to have links to SSP. Gaps in provision for clinical and individual populations and for SSP were identified. Six themes related to the success of group singing for health and wellbeing programmes were determined: fostering and funding social and community connections; the people and the approach; enjoyment and atmosphere; musical and personal growth, programmatic structure and musical content; and the impact of Covid. Conclusion: The first-ever national mapping of group singing for health and wellbeing in the ROI, and one of few internationally, this study may serve as a roadmap for gathering information about existing singing for health and wellbeing provision and identifying geographical and clinical gaps internationally. Recommendations are included for future research to address gaps in provision, explore the feasibility of integrating SSP more widely and for further public health investment.
