Mark, Mangan, Reed Lucy, and Choong John. 3 Introduction to SIAC Arbitration. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199657216.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents a brief history of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), and discusses its rules of arbitration and its changes. The Singapore government's Economic Committee recommended the establishment of an international arbitration centre in Singapore to help secure Singapore's place as a regional centre for legal services. This led to the establishment of SIAC in March 1990 as a non-profit public company limited by guarantee. The 2013 SIAC Rules affect two minor changes to the 2010 SIAC Rules: it makes organizational changes by establishing new SIAC court, and it makes conforming retrospective amendments to the 2007 and 2010 SIAC Rules.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes print and film tourism advertisements for Singapore. Unlike its neighbors, Singapore, by way of its English-language public sphere, is the “knowable Asia.” As a “Westernized” globalized city, it appears knowable through the consumption of local fare. Tourists are actively encouraged to partake of local food as part of the experience of Singapore—to literally taste the nation. For diasporic communities, food can serve as a reminder of home, of the familiar, and of the national, and for Singaporeans who find themselves outside the borders of their nation-state, local food can become a means to reaffirm identity. As a consequence of both tourism advertising and the growth of the overseas Singaporean population, there is a growing interest in Singaporean cuisine in the West, evident in the pages of food magazines, in the programming of Food Network, and in cooking classes.

Timothy, Spangler. 16 The Global Frontiers of Private Investment Funds. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198807247.003.0016.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the global expansion of private investment funds in the twenty-first century, focusing on two regions: Asia and the Middle East. In particular, it examines questions about the balance of power between fund managers and investors, the role of top-down regulation in non-public financial transactions, and the ability of private monitoring solutions to provide a meaningful alternative to such approaches. The chapter first describes the asset management industry in the United Arab Emirates, with emphasis on the roles of the Dubai International Financial Centre and the Dubai Financial Services Authority, before turning to Saudi Arabia and Islamic investment funds. It also considers Hong Kong and Singapore as centres of private investment funds in Asia, along with passporting and recognition that facilitate the cross-border offering of funds in other participating jurisdictions throughout the continent.
