Abstract: Spoilers have been there in practice since years for the purpose of improving aerodynamics of a car. The pressure drag created at the end of the vehicle, referred to as wake region affects handling of the vehicle. This could be hazardous for the cars at high speeds. By adding a spoiler to the rear of the car reduces that pressure drag and the enhanced downforce helps in better traction. The paper presents aerodynamic analysis of a spoiler through Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. The spoiler is designed using Onshape software and analyzed through SIMSCALE software. The simulation is carried out by changing angles of attack and velocities. The simulation results of downforce and drag are compared on the basis of analytical method. Abstract: From past decades, people are giving more attention to conservation of the fuels. The increasing number of passenger cars have increased the amount of traffic which directly impacts pollution and traffic congestion. Manufacturers are indulged into making lightweight and performance efficient automobiles. Implementation of different designs and materials has been in practice since ages. We need smaller vehicle designs for personal transport and electric vehicles to tackle the raising problems. In future designs, vehicles will be efficient enough to save more fuel and also the traffic problems may be solved. But for the design optimizations and experiments we need different analyses to be performed, one of which is aerodynamic analysis. In this paper a CFD analysis is done to check the aerodynamic performance of a proposed car design. The car has been designed using Onshape modeling software and analyzed in Simscale software. The car is subjected to different vehicle speeds and the results of drag coefficients and pressure plots are shown. Abstract:
Abstract A significant number of cooling technologies have been developed to maintain the PV module temperature within subscribed limits. This paper represents the simulation study of active cooling forced air convection with fins attached to the back of the solar panel using CFD SimScale software. It has been first carefully validated against experimental and numerical results available in the literature. The number of fins and the shape of perforated and dimpled in each fin were varied to compare cooling performance. Three types of fins were adapted into this simulation: traditional fins, circular, and triangle perforated/dimpled fins. The effect of solar irradiation and velocity inlet was also reviewed by applying the nominal operating condition from the experimental works. Results indicated that fin channels are a very effective cooling technique, which significantly reduces the average temperature of the PV cell, especially when increasing the number of fins from 20 to 26 fins. Also, the results show that the dimpled triangle fin had the highest average temperature drop with a percentage difference of 6% compared with the solar panel cooling with traditional fins.

Abstract:
Tubular pipe structures have been used in various applications—domestic, aviation, marine, manufacturing and material testing. The applications of tubular pipes have been considered greatly in the installation of tubular pipes, marine risers and pipe bending. For the investigation of plastic strains and the mechanical behaviour of a tube under bending, considerations were made utilising an exponent model with assumptions on the plane strain. The bending moment, wall thickness effect, cross-sectional distribution, stresses during bending and neutral layer boundaries were all presented as necessary theoretical formulations on the physics of tubular pipe bending. This model was based on the analytical and numerical investigation. In principle, the application can be observed as the spooling of pipes, bending of pipes and reeling. Comparisons were made on two models developed on the finite element analysis in Simscale OpenFEA, namely the linear-elastic and the elasto-plastic models. This study presents visualization profiles using plastic strain to assess its effect on the tubular pipes. This can increase due to the limitation of plastic deformation on the composite materials selected.

Abstract:
Flow control in piping systems is present in many engineering applications and is carried out by different components. In particular, ball valves consist of a plug with a cylindrical orifice that regulates the flow through rotation, modifying the effective passage section. In the present work, this type of device is studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). The simulations are carried out using the SimScale calculation platform, based on the free OpenFOAM software. The main objective of this analysis is to set and validate a numerical tool to predict the relationship between the opening percentage and the pressure loss for normalized valves, analyzing the flow structures developed in the vicinity of the plug. The models used are validated in axisymmetric problems of conduits with constant section and with a localized structure, comparing with the analytical solution and with numerical simulations, respectively. Then the case of a real ball valve in a turbulent regime at different openings is studied, comparing the results with experimental data and with numerical simulations carried out by other authors. A good agreement of the pressure loss coefficient is observed for each of the opening angles studied, verifying its independence on the Reynolds number.

Abstract:
With conventional CMOS technologies approaching their scaling limits, researchers are actively investigating alternative technologies for ever increasing computing and mobile demand. A number of different technologies are currently being studied by different research groups. In the last decade, one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene, which is a two-dimensional (2D) natural occurring carbon rolled in tubular form, and zero-dimensional (0D) fullerenes have been the subject of intensive research. In 2008, HP Labs announced a ground-breaking fabrication of memristors, the fourth fundamental element postulated by Chua at the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. In the last few years, the memristor has gained a lot of attention from the research community. In-depth studies of the memristor and its analog behavior have convinced the community that it has the potential in future nano-architectures for optimization of high-density memory and neuromorphic computing architectures. The objective of this thesis is to explore memristors for analog and mixed-signal system design using Simscape. This thesis presents a memristor model in the Simscape language. Simscape has been used as it has the potential for modeling large systems. A memristor based programmable oscillator is also presented with simulation results and characterization. In addition, simulation results of different memristor models are presented which are crucial for the detailed understanding of the memristor along with its properties.

Abstract:
This work presents an investigation of a piezoelectric sensor based energy harvesting system, which collects energy from the surrounding environment. Increasing costs and scarcity of fossil fuels is a great concern today for supplying power to electronic devices. Furthermore, generating electricity by ordinary methods is a complicated process. Disposal of chemical batteries and cables is polluting the nature every day. Due to these reasons, research on energy harvesting from renewable resources has become mandatory in order to achieve improved methods and strategies of generating and storing electricity. Many low power devices being used in everyday life can be powered by harvesting energy from natural energy resources. Power overhead and power energy efficiency is of prime concern in electronic circuits. In this work, an energy harvester is modeled and simulated in Simscape™ for the functional analysis and comparison of achieved outcomes with previous work. Results demonstrate that the harvester produces power in the 0 μW to 100 μW range, which is an adequate amount to provide supply to low power devices. Power efficiency calculations also demonstrate that the implemented harvester is capable of generating and storing power for low power pervasive applications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis work has been to analyze the usability and the feasibility formodeling with MathWorks simulation tool Simscape by building a simplified model ofthe automatic gearbox ZF-ECOMAT 4 (HP 504 C / HP 594 C / HP 604 C). It hasbeen shown throughout the thesis how this model is build. First has systemknowledge been acquired by studying relevant literature and speaking with thepersons concerned. The second step was to get acquainted with Simscape and thephysical network approach. The physical network approach that is accessible throughthe Simscape language makes is easy to build custom made components with means ofphysical and mathematical relationships. With this background a stepwise approachbeen conducted which has led to the final model of the gearbox and the validationconcept. The results from this thesis work indicates that Simscape is a powerful tool formodeling physical systems and the results of the model validation gives a good signthat it is possible to build and simulate physical models with the Simscape software. However, during the modeling of the ZF-ECOMAT 4 some things have beendiscovered which could improve the usability of the tool and make the learning curvefor an inexperienced user of physical modeling tools less steep. In particular, a largermodel library should be included from the beginning, more examples of simple andmore complex models, the object-oriented related parts such as own MATLABfunctions should be expanded, and a better troubleshooting guidance.

This thesis is concerned with condition monitoring and quantitative analysis of synchronous motors. Constantly rising requirements on the reliability of motors develop new methods of predictive diagnostics, which can identify failure conditions in the initial stage. Created mechatronic systems with the implemented failure from pre-prepared PMSM model are tested by unconventional condition monitoring methods. Software solutions of diagnostics and model designs of the mechatronic systems are implemented in MATLAB & Simulink. Full text
Abstract:
Single degree-of-freedom hopping robots are typically modeled as spring loaded inverted pendulums (SLIPs). This simplified model, however, does not consider the overall leg geometry, consequently making it difficult to investigate the optimized inertial distribution of the leg for agile locomotion. To address this issue, the first part of this thesis establishes an accurate mathematical model of a DC-motor-driven, two-link hopping robot where the motors are modeled as torque sources. The equations of motion for the two distinct phases of locomotion (stance and flight) are derived using the Lagrangian approach for holonomic systems. A Simulink/Stateflow model is developed to numerically simulate the robot’s locomotion. The model is then validated with the simulation data from Simscape Multibody, which allows for accurate modeling of the environment and inertial properties for complex geometries. With the accurate model of the hopping robot, two distinct control strategies are adopted. The first strategy focuses on implementing position control while the robot is in flight to prepare for touchdown. The second control method explores implementing impedance control during stance, allowing the response to mimic that of a mass-spring-damper model. It was found that concentrating the mass of the robot in the hip allows the robot to attain larger apex heights as opposed to evenly distributing the mass throughout the leg. With plans to implement the leg on a quadruped robot, the mathematical model is easily expandable to 2 or 3 degrees-of-freedom. This allows for further stability analysis and development of control strategies of the leg.

Abstract:
To sum up, the objective of the project was to construct a mathematical model that would sufficiently describe the behaviour of the complex hydraulic press system under analysis. Through the Simscape tool inside the Simulink environment, it was possible to select elementary blocks that expressed similar physical behaviour with respect to those corresponding elements comprising the real machine. The second goal of the project was to analyze different control designs, that could be implemented given the control variables at disposal, to minimize the filling error inside the piston chamber. Such error if present could cause instability in the vertical motion of the hydraulic cylinders, as well as deviation of pressure value inside the chamber from the optimal one, requested to achieve good performances in the tile formation process. The current open-loop behaviour has been shown to generate large filling errors during the pressing cycle, and such errors have been drastically reduced up to an order of $10$, by implementing the closed-loop control schemes presented. The first control scheme is based on a feedback measurement coming from an hydraulic volumetric flow rate sensor, and even though it showed good performances relative to the minimization of the filling error, it lacks in practicality, since such sensor is not available in the real setup. Therefore, a closed-loop control scheme based on the pressure measurement feedback, and an hysteresis controller, forcing the pressure signal to remain inside a bandwidth around the optimal value, has produced similar if not better results with respect to the more theoretical approach but with the advantage of practicality.

Abstract:
This thesis document outlines the development of a multibody dynamics simulation of an actively stabilized multiple-input, multiple-output, coupled, balancing cube and the process of verifying the results by implementing the control algorithm in hardware. A non-linear simulation of the system was created in Simscape and used to develop a Linear Quadratic Gaussian control algorithm. To implement this algorithm in actual hardware, the system was first designed, manufactured, and assembled. The structure of the cube and the reaction wheels were milled from aluminum. DC brushless motors were installed into the mechanical system. In terms of electronics, a processor, orientation sensor, motor drivers, analog to digital converters, and a pulse width modulation board were assembled into the cube. Upon completion, the software to control the cube was developed using Simulink and run on a Raspberry Pi computer within the mechanism.

Abstract:
Abstract Computational fluid dynamics is a computational method that enables engineers and designers to study the motion of fluids through computer simulations and modelling. Many tools on the market are so-called “in-house” tools requiring a certain level of expertise and upfront investment before proving their added value. Facilitated by the emergence of cloud computing, computer-aided engineering (CAE) technology is now offered as a software as a service (SaaS) solution, which increases its accessibility and ease of use. Online fluid flow (CFD) simulation is used in addressing a broad variety of problems like electronics design or pedestrian wind comfort (PWC), allowing engineers to accurately predict fluid flow behaviour guiding them towards smarter design decisions. SimScale is creating a paradigm shift for high-performance computing which can solve several problems that are faced when using on-premises software.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This research develops a dynamics and control framework for an unmanned powered parachute system. The 6 DOF dynamics are derived from the first principle/fundamentals. The dynamic equations are simulated and validated within the MATLAB Simulink simulation environment. A Model Reference Adaptive Controller algorithm is utilized and simulated to update coefficients to control the plant more accurately. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation using SimScale is used to estimate aerodynamic coefficients. This paper is presented as a building block/work in progress for future work on robust and efficient adaptive control of powered parachute aerial vehicles. Derivation of the dynamic equations is included in section two, while section three covers methods used to computationally define key aerodynamic coefficients and describe PPC simulation within the MATLAB Simulink environment. Finally, section four presents the results. Further research into this framework will include validating results through experimentation of the PPC aircraft and comparing dynamic model accuracy. Finally, more advanced control techniques will be applied to the PPC model in simulations and experiments.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">A non-pneumatic tire (NPT) has a unique design that offers certain advantages over the common pneumatic tire. This tire is resistant to punctures and immune to blowouts. The present work aims to improve the aerodynamic design of the NPT by keeping the structure of the spokes hexagonal but varying other design features like tread pattern and adding material and filets. CAD designs were developed using Fusion 360 software and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is carried out using SimScale software. The variation of camber and yaw angles has been conducted with both tread and material enhancement. There was a decrease in drag and lift when the material was added to all the tires, but for all variations of yaw and camber, an increase in drag and lift was seen. The analysis is further extended to see the effect of a wheel well on the aerodynamic performance of the NPT. A decrease in drag and lift of nearly 33.2% and 94.5%, respectively, were observed with a wheel well.</div></div>

Abstract:
Abstract Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software has become an essential modeling tool to study and validate flow problems in engineered systems. Many computer-aided engineering (CAE) programs for CFD are available with different capabilities, making it difficult to select the best program for a specific application. This problem compounds in fields with static and rotational regions due to varying approaches for developing the computational mesh and performing flow rotation operations. Three different CFD programs were reviewed and evaluated by analyzing a real-world problem: flow field analysis and power requirements of a spinning lawnmower blade. Simulations with SolidWorks, SimScale, and ANSYS Fluent were performed to study viscous and pressure forces on a lawnmower blade and compare quantitative and qualitative aspects of each software. The programs’ features, drawbacks, usability, and outputs were recorded and compared. Accuracy of the programs’ output torque was compared using torque data based on the differential power consumption of the electric lawn mower motor unloaded and loaded with the blade. The verification of methodology and results was approached with an analytical model based on drag relations around simplified geometry. Based on these analyses, Fluent provided more consistent solution accuracy with low computational costs and more versatile visualization capabilities.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the informative process of modeling of compliant mechanisms using MATLAB Simscape. Simscape is the modeling environment analyzing both rigid and flexible systems using either the blocks provided in the library or the CAD models imported from modeling software. We present the modeling of four compliant mechanisms: dwell, five bar, translational and hopping mechanisms. Once the cad model of a system is imported into Simscape, the flexible links or flexure segment on each example system is replaced by its equivalent lumped parameter block. Compliant dwell mechanism is comprised of a rail, two pinned-pinned flexible links, slider, rigid crank and a DC motor. The second mechanism is a fully compliant five bar mechanism incorporating large deflecting flexures and actuated by two servo motors. The objective is to control the trajectory of the tip position. Third example models a bio-inspired translational compliant mechanism driven by servo motors and comprised of three sliders connected by single piece designed 2 rigid arm-flexure hinge linkages mimicking the motion of a caterpillar. The last example is the modeling of a compliant hopping robot consisting of two pairs of gears; one pair is attached to the motor and the other pair allows the bottom links to rotate at same angular velocity in opposite directions.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper reports on Simscape modeling and experimental validation of compliant mechanisms and soft robotic systems. During the past decade, there has been a lot of advancements in terms of the development of novel soft robotic systems, actuators, and sensors. However, efficient modeling of these systems is still a challenge for researchers. This is due to the existence of nonlinearities such as large deformation in the structure of soft robotic systems and compliant mechanisms. While analytical models can be used for conventional rigid robots, the application of these models for soft robots is limited. Simscape is an efficient tool for modeling soft robotic systems and compliant mechanisms as it can take into account large deformation. To validate the developed Simscape models we used a 6 DOF electromagnetic position sensor for each of the example systems such as a compliant bistable mechanism, compliant linear actuator, and a soft Delta robot.
