Henderson, Aneeka Ayanna. Veil and Vow. University of North Carolina Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5149/northcarolina/9781469651767.001.0001.

Abstract:
In Veil and Vow, Aneeka Ayanna Henderson places familiar, often politicized questions about the crisis of African American marriage in conversation with a rich cultural archive that includes fiction by Terry McMillan and Sister Souljah, music by Anita Baker, and films such as The Best Man. Seeking to move beyond simple assessments of marriage as "good" or "bad" for African Americans, Henderson critically examines popular and influential late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century texts alongside legislation such as the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act and the Welfare Reform Act, which masked true sources of inequality with crisis-laden myths about African American family formation. Using an interdisciplinary approach to highlight the influence of law, politics, and culture on marriage representations and practices, Henderson reveals how their kinship veils and unveils the fiction in political policy as well as the complicated political stakes of fictional and cultural texts. Providing a new opportunity to grapple with old questions, including who can be a citizen, a "wife," and "marriageable," Veil and Vow makes clear just how deeply marriage still matters in African American culture.

Abstract:
The presence of thrombus in the central veins is associated with a higher risk of development post-thrombotic syndrome. The AngioJet Solent Proxi (90 cm) and Omni (120 cm) catheters are commonly used peripheral thrombectomy devices indicated for acute arterial and venous thrombus removal. Both catheters are 6 Fr sheath/8 Fr guide catheter compatible, and both offer the Power Pulse feature, allowing the direct infusion of tissue plasminogen activator into the thrombus. The catheters are indicated for use in vessels greater than 3 mm, with an optimal vessel range between 6 and 20 mm. Their use in the removal of iliac vein and inferior vena cava thrombus is frequent. Although the system is purported to provide effective thrombectomy capabilities in larger vessels, incomplete thrombus removal is common with larger vessels. This chapter proposes a simple modification in the standard use of the AngioJet Solent Proxi and Omni catheters.

Abstract:
Haemodynamic monitoring is a significant component in the management of critically-ill patients. Flow-directed pulmonary artery catheters (PAC) are a simple and rapid technique for measuring several continuous or intermittent circulatory variables. The PAC is helpful in diagnosis, guidance of therapy, and monitoring therapeutic interventions in various clinical conditions, including myocardial infarction and its complications, non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema and severely ill patients. The catheter is inserted through a large vein. The PAC is advanced, after ballooninflation with 1.5 mL of air, through the right ventricle across the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary artery (PA). Finally, the catheter is advanced to the ‘wedge’ position. The pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) is identified by a decrease in pressure combined with a characteristic change in the waveform. The balloon should then be deflated and the PA tracing should reappear. Direct measurements include central venous pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, and PAWP, which during diastole represents the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and reflects left ventricular preload. Cardiac output can be measured by thermodilution technique. Other haemodynamic variables can be derived from these measurements. Absolute contraindications are rare. Relative contraindications include coagulopathy and conditions that increase the risk of arrhythmias.
