Full textThe preparation of composite coatings consisting of different materials with improved properties has been an intensively studied area of thin film technology in recent years. One method to prepare such composite coatings is the incorporation of nano or micro particles into a matrix of a different material. In this thesis, such composite coatings are investigated which have been prepared via a sol-gel route und contain up to about 30 wt.-% tungsten disulfide particles. These inorganic fullerenes have typical particle sizes of about 100 nm to 200 nm. Two different types of composite coatings with a thickness of up to a few micrometers and with embedded tungsten disulfide particles are prepared: First, coatings with a relatively stiff alumina matrix, and second, coatings with a matrix made of organically modified silica. Different analytical methods are used for the structural characterization of the coatings. The crystal structure and the chemical composition of the coatings are determined via x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence measurements and via energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Through scanning and transmission electron microscopy the incorporation and the distribution of the tungsten disulfide particles in the respective matrix are analysed. Furthermore, the roughness and the adhesion of the coatings on the substrate are investigated. The influence of the embedded particles and of the temperature of the final heat treatment during the sample preparation on the mechanical properties, like elastic modulus and hardness, of the composite coatings are measured through nanoindentation testing. These experimental results are compared with theoretical values determined via different analytical models for effective materials. Finally, the tribological behavior of the composite coatings is investigated in comparison to pure coatings made of alumina or organically modified silica. With ball-on-disc tests the coefficient of friction of the coatings is measured under different conditions. It can be seen that the incorporation of a sufficiently high amount of tungsten disulfide leads to a strong reduction of friction, which is promising for a possible application of such composite coatings

Full textSupported vanadium oxide catalysts are of high interest because of their potential in a wide variety of oxidation reactions. A key step to fully understand the catalytic mechanism is a profound knowledge of the microscopic structure of the active vanadia species under various conditions and the way they are anchored to the support material. In the present work, density functional theory in combination with statistical thermodynamics is employed to investigate two vanadia-based systems, i.e., vanadia/alumina and vanadia/silica. The alumina support is modeled using the stable alpha-Al2O3 and the metastable kappa-Al2O3 phases, whereas ultrathin SiO2 film epitaxially grown on Mo(112) is employed as a silica support. The unique atomic structure of the latter as well as that of the one-dimensional silica stripes, found to coexist with the film in a perfect registry, are precisely determined based on combined theoretical and experimental studies. Moreover, the formation of a new, "O-rich" phase of the SiO2/Mo(112) film is predicted, whose existence is subsequently experimentally confirmed. The aim of the thesis is to provide an understanding on how vanadia aggregates anchor to the surface and to examine the role of the oxide support on the molecular and electronic structure of the stable VOx species. The efforts have focused on finding correlations between structural properties and catalytic activity in reactions proceeding via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. In accord therewith, the formation energy of a lattice oxygen defect is used as an indicator of catalytic performance. The influence of the support structure on the interface vibrational modes is analyzed in an attempt to shed light on the origin of the characteristic bands observed in the experimental spectra of vanadia/alumina and vanadia/silica model catalysts.

Full textThis paper deals with calcium phosphate cements containing alkali to achieve higher solubility and resorption. The aim of this work was to analyse the cements in terms of setting reaction /setting time, pH, compressive strengh, particle size, microstructure and chemical composition. The main component of these cements was Ca2KNa(PO4)2 with additions of SiO2 or MgO. The Cements were synthesied by heating to 1050 °C or 1500 °C. After 24 h milling samples were prepared by mixing H2O, Na2HPO4, 0,1 M citric acid with MCPA or 0,5 M citric acid. The main interest was to analyse wether the reaction leads to hydroxylapatite or not. The results showed that additions of SiO2 or MgO decrease the setting process. Without any additions, the alkali ion substitued calcium phosphate cements react to hydroxylapatite with low compression strengh. A clinical use of these cements is only possible in lowly loaded bone defects
