Abstract:
PROTESTANT DOCTRINE IN SILESIAN CALENDARS BEFORE THE MID-18TH CENTURY This article looks at the issue of confesionality and the presence of Protestant doctrine in early modern calendars produced in Silesia. The article is based on an examination of 78 early modern calendars (16th through mid-18th century), which were printed in Silesian printing houses (including Breslau, Brzeg, Legnica, Kłodzko, Kożuchów, Nysa and Opawa). Of the calendars bearing the names of editors/authors, 17 were Protestant. While some of these figures were pastors, others were intellectuals who associated with Protestant groups. Silesian calendars were addressed to both Protestants and Catholics. This dual religious character reflected the contemporary Silesian political context, which was fraught with religious tension. While these conditions stimulated a broad religious neutrality, leading many to avoid any direct reference to either Protestant reformers or their doctrines in published works, some Protestant religious ideals nevertheless permeated calendars. The goal of this infiltration, often couched in religious and biblical phrases, was to educate readers on specific social values and work ethic, morality, obedience to superiors, and openness to the outside world.

Abstract:
The article contains considerations on contemporary everyday life in Silesia. Its main aim is the interpretation of novels written in the late 2010s, for instance Od jednego Lucypera (From the same devil) by Anna Dziewitt-Meller, Pokora by Szczepan Twardoch, Kajś. Opowieść o G.rnym Śląsku (Kajś. A Story of Upper Silesia) by Zbigniew Rokita. Those stories are genologically placed between a family saga, herstory and myth retelling, but the most important purpose for the authors was the recognition of the specific Upper Silesian culture, past and present experiences and visions of the local community.

Abstract:
The present article focuses on eighteenth-century German-language descriptions of the Giant Mountains and Izera Mountains included in selected eighteenth-century accounts of trips to the high est mountains of Silesia and Bohemia by travellers from various German-speaking countries. The analysed fragments refer primarily to sites on the Silesian side of these mountain ranges, although the Bohemian part is mentioned in one case. Differing in terms of their countries of origin, the authors of these works — who included Silesians, a German from Bohemia as well as a man from Berlin and a man from Saxony — liked to refer in their accounts to well-known Swiss models, primarily to the poetic works of Albrecht von Haller and scholarly works of Johann Jakob Scheuchzer, comparing the Giant Mountains to the Alps and using in their descriptions of nature metaphors inspired by the famous Swiss authors, whose oeuvres were quite popular across the entire civilised Europe. The present article provides a detailed analysis of the descriptions of the various natural sites and phenomena, in which the authors use the vocabulary of the history of art and culture, comparing, for example, the view of valleys seen from a mountain top to miniature painting, a waterfall to a performance and music, and rock formations to architectural objects and ancient ruins.

Abstract:
Ivo Stolařík was certainly the most important researcher in the field of music-historical and ethnographic research in northeast Moravia and "Czech" Silesia. The authors of the study evaluate the lifelong contribution of this scholar to music history and folklore studies. Stolařík was the first (before the arrival of other musicologists in Ostrava in the second half of the 20th century, graduates of musicology from the universities in Brno or Olomouc, such as Vladimír Gregor, Miroslav Malura, Karel Boženek and others) to begin to systematically research the musical culture of the wider Ostrava region. This was firstly in the Department of Musicology of the Silesian Study Institute in Opava (from 1958 the Silesian Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences) where he virtually laid the foundations for systematic research into the musical culture of the region. Stolařík was very active both in scientific publishing and in his other jobs, as Director of the Ostrava State Philharmonic (renamed the Janáček Philharmonic in 1971), A&R Specialist of the Supraphon record label in Prague, and before his retirement at the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. The paper also presents analytical probes into Stolařík's two most important monographs, Umělecká hudba v Ostravě 1918–1938 (Art Music in Ostrava 1918–1938) and Hrčava. Monografie goralské obce ve Slezsku (Hrčava. A Monograph of a Goral Village in Silesia).

Abstract:
Purpose. The aim of the study was to identify factors affecting kayak tourism and to try to assess their impact on the decision to choose this type of tourism in the Silesian Province. Method. The research involved a diagnostic survey method with the use of a survey questionnaire developed by the authors and based on literature. The research, in which the Silesian’s inhabitants dominated, consisted of in two national kayak rafting excursions. One of them was a traditional rafting race and took place during the summer, while the other was a recreational race and was held in winter. Findings. The research showed that the most important factor determining the demand for kayak tourism (both among women and men) was the purity of rivers, while cultural values were the least important. Research and conclusion limitations. The study included kayak tourists taking part in only the two above-mentioned national kayak rafting excursion; because it does not comprise of tourists taking part in kayak events or individual tourists (non-organized events), this limits the possibilities of inference and points to the need for further research. Practical implications: Further development of kayak tourism in the Silesian Province depends on the influence of individual demand factors. The work shows the direction of creating a tourist product that is kayaking. Originality: Despite rich literature on tourism demand, there is still a lack of literature references to kayak tourism. This topic is of particular importance in relation to the Silesian Province, which is most often associated with industrialized areas of high environmental degradation. Type of work: The paper presents the results of empirical research.

Abstract:
Abstract Silesian cities are facing economic changes related, among others, to low-carbon transformation. The PN-ISO 37120 standard, which requires the analysis of a number of indicators that determine the directions of city development in particular areas of its functioning, may become a tool supporting city authorities in those activities. Having the above in mind, the authors of the article attempted to find an answer to the question whether the local administration employees of selected Silesian cities have knowledge of the PN-ISO 37120:2015 standard today, as it is an interesting tool for the implementation of the requirements for modern cities. Therefore, the knowledge of the content of the standard by the local government personnel seems to be necessary in order to decide whether this standard is an appropriate tool for the development of a particular city/municipality or not. The study was a pilot project and it involved two cities located in the Silesian agglomeration.

Abstract:
The implementation of sustainability in urban spaces has been studied for many years in different countries. Sustainability means maintaining a certain ecological status enabling longevity and durability. However, in the case of smart cities, sustainability is supported by information communication technology (ICT) adoption and implementation. In this paper, authors focus on metropolis architecture modeling and recommend positive experiences gathered by municipalities in different countries. The collected experiences and good practices concern ICT implementation for sustainable metropolis management. Authors formulated an original Model of Metropolis Ecosystem Architecture in the ArchiMate language. This model preparation required literature review and studies on ICT implementation opportunities for urban governance. The Metropolis Ecosystem Architecture Model (MEAM) is to support strategic planning and ICT eco-innovation management in the Silesian Metropolis. This significant model emphasized the metropolis stakeholders’ interests combined with ICT solutions.

Abstract:
“Is Our Eagle White or Golden?” Some Thoughts on Disputes over Commemoration and Promotion of the Duchy of Cieszyn: The article is focused on the discussion accompanying the reconstruction of the flag of the Duchy of Cieszyn. According to the plan of the initiators of the mentioned project, this act should help to create a touristic brand called “Duchy of Cieszyn”. The flag was supposed to help in the process of promoting the Cieszyn Silesia as an attractive touristic region. A couple of days after the flag was presented, the authors of the idea had to face the accusation that they supported the Silesian separatist tendencies which are associated with the Silesian Autonomy Movement [Ruch Autonomii Śląska – RAŚ]. The article presents the arguments of both sides: the critics and initiators of the reconstructed flag. It tries to show the sources of the disputes and narrations of each of the opponents. In the middle of these arguments there are different points of view on the region and its past. They are linked with the different identity and experience of the regional past. The article also focuses e.g., on tensions between identities built around the categories of Cieszyn Silesia and Podbeskidzie which is the unofficial name of the area on the borderland between the historical regions of Lesser Poland [Małopolska] and Cieszyn Silesia. Essentially, the identity of the inhabitants of Podbeskidzie has started to develop after World War II. On the one hand it is linked with the process of cultural forgetting, on the other hand the inhabitants have various experiences of the past. The article also tries to present the opinions of a couple of representants of the Polish minority in Zaolzie [Trans-Olza] in the Czech Republic regarding the reconstruction of the Duchy of Cieszyn flag. In general, the article focuses on conflicts of memory as well as tensions between local / regional and national perspectives.

Abstract:
ZusammenfassungThis article analyses cultural exchange processes in early modern Europe using the example of the circulation of the Cardenio and Celinde material, the original text of which can be found in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. However, comparative research often reaches its limits because the history of reception is difficult to reconstruct due to the lack of sources: What, for example, connects Gryphius’ tragedy with Shakespeare’s lost drama The History of Cardenio? What did both playwrights know about the literature of the Siglo de Oro? An answer to these questions is provided by a consideration of the author as a cultural mediator in the sense of Roger Chartier. In case of the Silesian poet, it also makes it possible to draw conclusions about his knowledge of foreign-language literatures that go far beyond his actual translation work.

ZusammenfassungCalled “our English Seneca” in his time, Joseph Hall (1574–1656), Bishop of Exeter and Norwich, author of theological and moral treatises, wrote one of his most famous and important works Haeven upon Earth in 1606. This treatise was translated into German in 1632 by the Breslau poet, professor and librarian Christoph Köler (1602–1658). The subtitle of Hall’s work Of True Peace and Tranquillity of Mind places his philosophical-religious reflections in the succession of the Senecan and Lipsian “tranquillity of mind”, a philosophical standpoint that Köler, the resolute representative of Lipsian Neo-Stoicism in Silesia, held dear in a special way. The article examines the scope, aim and function of Köler’s translation for education, culture and literary history.

This chapter describes the author's experience of building the research environment for the implementation of bibliometric research on the science of mining, being developed in Poland in 1945-1989, on the basis of periodicals published by the major technical universities involved in teaching and research in that field at that time. The study was conducted on the volume of data entered (by typing), collected, and processed in a relational database. The data, covering information of more than 36,000 articles and more than 22,000 authors, formed bibliographic database named “GRUBA” (an acronym for polish phrase “Mining Register Enabling Bibliometric Analysis” and a word meaning mine in the Silesian dialect as well). The aim of this chapter is not to present a comprehensive and extensive bibliometric research results. Only a small part of it is a background for presenting the experience gained during the implementation of research, with the primary emphasis on the final stages – modeling and analyzing the visual maps created mainly using Gephi software and representing science development.

Abstract:
The Delft Thunderclap, a massive gunpowder explosion which in 1654 devastated the Dutch city of Delft, elicited numerous responses by authors and artists from the Northern and Southern Netherlands. This chapter analyses another reaction, printed outside the Low Countries: a hitherto unknown Latin poem by the Silesian-Polish polymath Joachim Pastorius. His poem was published in 1657 in the Polish cosmopolitan city of Gdańsk, which maintained strong commercial and cultural ties with the Northern Netherlands. Pastorius had many Dutch contacts and likely based his verses on Dutch sources, specifically a famous poem by Joost van den Vondel. Pastorius applied a well-known rhetorical framework to inspire solidarity with the mourning Dutch. The disastrous Delft Thunderclap thus provided Pastorius with the opportunity to shape a transnational emotional community of learned readers and writers across Northern Europe, bridging Poland and the Dutch Republic.

The author presents the background of this transaction, describing the family and political ties of the lords from Byczen. He points to the consequences personal changes in the ruling elite of the Czech Kingdom had for local developments. The analysis was carried out in view of the economic and social processes accompanying the colonization of the Czech-Silesian border in the thirteenth century. The fact of brutal competition in land trading in Silesia which involved representatives of the Church, nobility and burghers from newly founded cities, e.g. Ziębice located near Henryków, was discussed.

Abstract:
CHANGE AND NEGOTIATION AT THE SOURCE OF THE CONCEPT OF POWER OF THE SILESIAN PIASTS (12TH-13TH CENTURIES) The article analyzes the concept of power as a structure determining the shape of social relations in the Middle Ages. The study used findings in the field of social communication as determining the research perspective. In this context, an attempt was made to show the communication relations between the rulers and the ruled. The author also refers to the methodological reflection presented by Michael Werner and Bénédicte Zimmerman in the discussion on the histoire croisée. The main subject of the analysis is the moment of change in the communication of the image of power, as exemplified by the presentation of members of the Piast Dynasty in the 12th-13th centuries. This period saw the introduction of new ideological solutions. Three main points are discussed: first, the issue of the conditions enabling changes in the way power was described (political crisis?, cultural change?); second, the question of the permanence of the proposed changes; and third, determining the depth of the changes. The interpretation of the divine and social origins of power outlined in the first Polish chronical texts has been traced. The evolution of the idea of power was shown on the example of the Piasts in the 12th and 13th centuries, incl. describing the title they used. The end of the 13th century was considered a breakthrough moment in which the belief in the special role of Silesia as rooted in the past and legitimizing its place in the present-day space of power was established among the Silesian Piasts. The author’s reflections extend to Henryk the Bearded and Henryk Pious, given by titles to the system of power in Silesia.

Abstract:
In this article, the author analyzes the image of Fidel Castro and his visit to Silesia on June 7–8, 1972, which was part of the Cuban delegation stay in the Polish People's Republic on June 6–13, 1972, emerging from press reports and archival materials. During this period, the press played a propaganda role in Poland, creating the image of political reality in a way desired by the state authorities. In this context, the Cuban delegation’s visit in Poland was a performance directed by the authorities, whose participants were Polish and Cuban politicians, crowds welcoming the guests, as well as officers of the Citizens' Militia and the Security Service taking part in the operation of securing the visit. Archival sources allow us to get to know the backstage of this visit. The author tries to make a comparative analysis and a synthesis of two different images of those events, as well as to draw conclusions about the boundary between the creator and the recipient of propaganda.

This paper is focused on the linguistic situation in Upper Silesia, an ethnocultural region in Southern-Western Poland. The Silesians are a West Slavic minority group that traditionally has been regarded in Polish political and scientific discourse as an ethnographic group of Poles. Based on anthropological fieldwork, the author describes the specificity of modern linguistic processes in the region, the social prestige of Silesian and the movement for its recognition as a regional language in Poland. This research shows how the national construction and state language policy in Silesia have defined the linguistic identity and the language choice of modern Silesians.

Abstract:
Strategic management and management in general as well as the form of behavioral management of post-mining landscapes is a very important question of how to meaningfully use brownfields that will arise after the end of fossil fuel extraction. The authors of the presented article focused on these revitalization areas in the form of project management from the perspective of strategies for suitable locations. These localities are very important for the further development of the area, and related to this are the possibilities of financing not only from domestic sources, but also from the sources of the European Union. An example can be the use of post-mining landscapes in the surrounding countries, although it should be taken into account that the Czech Republic and its post-mining landscapes are very specific localities, and therefore they will be considered in the contribution. utors will present the possible use of selected locations with a form of financing. It goes without saying that emphasis will be placed on the mining traditions of the Moravian-Silesian region in which the sites are located, but the authors will also focus on sites elsewhere in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:
Professor A.G. Shirokova insisted on the need for Bohemian students to get acquainted not only with the literary Czech language, but also with non-literary idioms represented in the Czech discourse. The article is devoted to the travelogue S Jarkem po sto rokach okolo Rakuska-Uherska (2019), written, according to the definition of the author of the travelogue Ladislav Větvička, in the "Ostrava language" (ostravština). The travelogue is a successful symbiosis of the southern dialects of Czech Silesia, literary Czech and partly everyday-spoken Czech. The appearance of such texts strengthens the position of the "Ostrava" (= Lyashsky = Czech-Silesian) microlanguage, which sounds in the reader's mind whenever texts are read on it.

Abstract:
The modernisation of power generation sector has involved the construction of new power units, having supercritical parameters e.g. 580/ 600°C with 280bar, and calculated efficiency of approx. 43%. The new boilers are supercritical ones of capacities 440MW and 840MW. Their investors expect that new creep-resistant steels to be used in order to comply with the operational requirements, as well as to assure the appropriate reliability and safety of the boiler equipment in operation. Authors describe a co-operating process has been made with RAFAKO S.A. the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy in Gliwice, the Institute of Welding and the Silesian Technical University in Katowice, for several years now, initiating research and development programmes. This paper contains selected information, test results and their evaluation before implementation of the new creep-resistant steels, including evaluation of: - working parameters and temperature conditions of main boiler components, which influence reliability and safety procedures, - base material, welded joints and HAZ structure by means of LM and SEM methods in the welding technology implementation process, - the requested level of mechanical properties, including corrosion mechanisms, - corrosion and creep-resistance results, - loss of service life for selected evaporator and steam superheater components, as crucial elements in evaluation of reliability and safety of boiler equipment.

Abstract:
The present paper describes an innovative initiative regarding the European Doctorate in Teacher Education (EDiTE), financed in the framework of LLP Erasmus Program, piloted by five European universities and highly supported by European Network on Teacher Education Policies (ENTEP). The EDiTE initiative developed collaboratively by University of Innsbruck, University of Bucharest, Eötvös Loránd University, University of Lisbon, University of Lower Silesia represents a unique construction, aiming to optimize the use of doctoral study programs in shaping researchers and teaching professionals; the approach proposed stimulates and enhances progression of scientifically qualified teacher educators to meet the needs of the wider European labour market (teacher mobility), towards a transversal teacher education strategy. It generates an advanced European-level specialist qualification, a new generation of professionals working across national boundaries. It lends added value to the European Higher Education Area with the full cooperative development of an integrated course of study by academic leaders. Additionally, the project aims to establish the basis for a transnational community of discourse and practice by multilingual transfer of intercultural knowledge and experience. The authors consider the in depth presentation of this generative model relevant to a wider audience interested in reflection on teacher education and teacher education policies in Europe. ENTEP develops its activities in the field of teacher education policies, but, according to its understanding"it is neither a decision group nor an expert group. It is an advisory group or reference group that acts as a sounding board for the European Commission and individual member states.
