Van, Wyck Peter C. "Signs of dangerdangerous signs : responding to nuclear threat." Thesis, McGill University, 1997. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=35417.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis ("Signs of Danger/Dangerous Signs: Responding to Nuclear Threat") is a poststructural, interdisciplinary exploration of the social, political and cultural workings of nuclear threat. Drawing extensively on a nuclear waste burial initiative being undertaken by the United States Department of Energy, this work is a detailed critical analysis of the relationships between the threats posed by nuclear wastes, and the responses provoked in relation to such threats.
Working through such theorists as Jacques Lacan and Slavoj Zˆizˆek (the second death, and le Reel), Francois Ewald (thresholds), Ulrich Beck (risk society), and Felix Guattari (ecology of the virtual), this work demonstrates the manner in which ecological threats, such as that posed by the nuclear, are (paradoxically) "creative" forces; that is, they have a propensity to cut through traditional social divisions (e.g., class, race), assembling news lines of affinity, and new constituencies of those at risk. Indeed, it seem that nuclear threat constitutes a novel form of threat. A form of threat that is irreducibly material, yet admits of no objective ground upon which decisions may be made. A form of threat that threatens the very biological foundations of life, yet whose ontology is to be determined through social and cultural responses.
The principle critical figure I use to analyse and illustrate the movement of threat is the vast monument/sign which is to be constructed above the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in the desert near Carlsbad, New Mexico. If constructed, this monument will be one of the largest public works project in history. The purpose of this monument is to signify the danger which is to be buried below and thereby deter---for a legislated period of 10,000 years---inadvertent human intrusion into the site. Through analyses of the semiotic issues raised by the desert monument, the appropriation of the practice of burial and its relations to cultural conceptions of death, and the use of the desert as the mise-en-scene of waste, this dissertation shows how the larger context of waste burial demonstrates an extreme and unexamined field of cultural trauma and disavowal around issues of nuclear threat.

Wymant, Christopher Mark. "Signs of Susy." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7350/.

Full text
Abstract:
After a brief introduction to 21st century fundamental physics suitable for the layman with a reasonable level of mathematical competence, I introduce the concept of unnaturalness in Standard Model electroweak symmetry breaking and Supersymmetry (Susy) as a potential solution. The optimally natural situation in Susy in light of the 2012 discovery of a Higgs boson is derived, namely that of almost maximal mixing, with the scalar top partners almost as light as can be. The discovery is also interpreted numerically in terms of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, with greater emphasis placed on the visibility of the Higgs boson at the observed mass, i.e. on signal strengths. I introduce simple models of gauge-mediated Susy breaking (GMSB), and how their generalisation leads to a richer parameter space. I then investigate the role played by the mediation scale of GMSB: this is found to be as a control of the extent to which Yukawa couplings de-tune flavour-blind relations set by gauge couplings. Finally, issues relating to the discovery or exclusion of Susy at colliders are discussed. Bounds are derived for the masses of new particles from Large Hadron Collider searches for excesses of jets and missing energy without leptons, and compared to constraints arising from Higgs boson searches, for models of GMSB and the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. I present a novel search strategy for new physics signatures with two neutral, stable particles, when such particles are produced by boosted decays. (Susy examples include models with light gravitinos, pseudo-goldstinos, singlinos or new photinos.) The method is shown to produce sharp mass peaks that enhance the visibility of the signal.

Abstract:
Background/Problematization: Many purchase decisions are made in-store and one wayof influencing the decision making process is through signs. Signs are said to drawattention to the product on which they are placed and result in increased sales. Sale signsare widely used to influence purchase decisions, but are there other types of signs that canimpact the purchase decision? Recommendations have also shown to affect consumer’spurchase decisions. However, most of the research within the subject have been done on thepower of social influences from friends and family, e.g. strong-tie relationships. Howrecommendations from experts (e.g. weak-tie relationships) can influence purchases is lessresearched, especially which type of recommendation sign have the most effect. Purpose: The purpose is to examine and map how different types of signs on shelvesrelated to staff recommendations for specific products affect their sales. Method: The scientific approach of the study is deductive and the corresponding researchmethod is a quantitative study with an experimental design and a descriptive focus. Anexperiment was executed in a supermarket on 28 products to test stimuli with differentlevels of information concerning staff recommendations with the use of signs. Result/Conclusion: The result showed only one stimuli to have significantly increasedsales. The stimuli consisted of adding a name of a specific staff member to therecommendation sign. The increase in sales might however have been caused by otherfactors than the applied sign as the outbreak of Covid-19 resulted in changed consumerbehavior at the time of the experiment. The results showed that no significant differences insales could be seen according to the number of alternatives each product had. This mighthowever be a result of the tampered data caused by the changed consumer behavior.

I am investigating the significance of historic events of flight through image making; particularly incidents that captured the collective imagination and became part of our cultural memory. These events have surpassed mere entries in historical texts and become mythic. In the terms of Jungian psychology, they have become symbolic. In terms of Semiotics, they have become signs. Through photographs and installation, I seek to understand their presence in my, and our, unconscious mind.

Dunlop, Richard Noel. "Signs of Still Life." Thesis, Griffith University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366633.

Full text
Abstract:
The research question under investigation is: Working within the genre of still life, how can my current work represent a ‘radical revision’ of selected aspects of this traditional genre? The issues and art historical knowledge informing the creation of my contemporary still lifes is the central subject of this project – involving a selfeffacing, metacognitive process of ‘radical revisionism’ (see Butler, 2005), reflecting contemporary practices among artists and art historians alike. The ancient genre of still life, stemming from Pompeian frescoes and mosaics to the current day, will be exposed to an openly subjective historical narrative, compelled in directions associated with the creation of my own artwork. My own processes of art making will likewise be questioned in terms of the way they might be historically understood against the scholarship of art historians and critics, and where they may find a place within the broad intellectual and academic framework under construction by a range of international artists and art historians. The contribution to be made to new knowledge will by the nature of the subject under investigation and result in an analysis of the continual interaction of making and theorising about art. New theoretical knowledge linked to the creation of my own artworks will be partially constructed through and by the artwork, so that the completed artworks and their making are theorised themselves (Macleod and Holdridge, 2006: 2) against a backdrop of considerable existing writings on the origins, contexts and meanings of still life. The contemporary theorising of Rex Butler (2005) on ‘radical revisionism’ will be important to this endeavour. Butler (2005:9) summarises the difficulties and preferences of the contemporary art historian in bringing to bear present knowledge and values to any study of the past, the subject of an enduring debate in historiography: It is a history, therefore, that sees the artists of the past speaking across what we might like to call ‘time-separated’ areas to contemporary issues. In other words – and we should try to remain aware of just what is so extraordinary about this – it is a history that conceives of the artists of the past as though they were already post-modernists, already reacting in their work to the same concerns that artists of today do. It is a theoretical position which is well-suited to the present study because Butler (2005) seeks to displace a straightforward dichotomy between analysing objects, people or actions on their own past terms and their work and behaviour in relation to contemporary reference points. It is an analytical stance which automatically dismisses claims for an ‘impartial’, ‘objective’ or ‘singular’ history and locates the interpreter as a person who is wilfully intervening in the recasting of the motives and meanings linked to objects, people and actions. The notion of ‘radical revisionism’ will be applied to an historical account of members of the genre of still life as well as to the developmental processes of my own artworks. The work of a range of contemporary artists who have sought to rejuvenate the language and conventions of still life will be examined, followed by the discussion of my own work. Any emerging divide in operation between theory and practice will be viewed as mutable. Central to the written research output was the creation of a major body of works on paper and paintings, and this research includes an analysis of the deliberations involved in the development of my artworks. The works on paper and paintings reveal the application of relatively instinctual artistic decisionmaking processes in conjunction with more reflective theoretical and art-historical considerations. Other mediums such as video or installation could equally have been used by me (or preferred by other artists) in subsequent related investigations to explore similar concerns. Likewise, genres other than still life could be viewed by others as suitable vehicles for reflecting on the interaction between theorising and art making against the long backdrop of an historical genre.

Chen, Eric Y. H. "Soft neurological signs in schizophrenia." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24331.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes a series of studies addressing the prevalence, correlates and longitudinal changes in soft neurological signs (SNS) in schizophrenia. SNS are found to be increased in schizophrenia. The increase appeared to have both a genetic and a non-genetic component. It has been proposed that SNS could be considered as one of the biological markers expressing a mediating risk for schizophrenia. In order to clarify the role of SNS in this perspective it is important to understand factors that affect the expression of SNS in a given population. Previous studies have identified possible relationships between SNS on one hand, and age, ethnicity, intelligence as well as education levels on the other. Associations with clinical features as well as cognitive function impairment have also been suggested. Antipsychotic medication side-effects appear not to be directly related to SNS, nevertheless their impacts cannot be entirely ruled out. Inconsistencies have also emerged as a result of sampling and methodological variations. The potential change of SNS with time in different phases of the disorder is another important issue that has not been adequately addressed with longitudinal studies. This dissertation describes works that addressed some of these issues in different samples using the same assessment methodology. A relatively extensive cross-sectional study addresses the relationship of SNS with demographic, educational, clinical and cognitive factors. The level of SNS in a Chinese sample is also compared with that obtained in a Caucasian sample to investigate effects of ethnicity. Data from the cross-sectional study also allow a limited analysis addressing the contributions of age and illness duration across a wider time range. Two longitudinal studies then focus on specific phases of the disorder. The first study investigates changes in SNS amongst chronic patients approaching old age (the fifth decade). The second study addresses changes in SNS following first episode psychosis. In the first chapter a broad introduction to methodological issues is presented. Chapter 2 continues with a more detailed review of the existing data about SNS in schizophrenia. Chapter 3 presents the core methodology and assessment instruments used in the studies. In Chapter 4 the recruitment procedures and the characteristics of the samples are described. Data analysis and results are presented in Chapters 5 to 8. In Chapter 5 important correlates of SNS are explored using data from a larger crosssectional sample of Chinese patients and controls. These include age, gender, education level, intelligence, as well as symptom correlates of SNS. The potential effects of ethnicity were further explored by comparison between Chinese and Caucasian control samples. Additional analyses were carried out to attempt to address the relative importance of age and illness duration for SNS in patients. Chapter 6 describes in more detail the relationship between SNS and cognitive functions in this cross-sectional sample. Chapters 7 and 8 describe two longitudinal studies. Chapter 7 deals with a 3-year follow-up study for stable chronic patients. Chapter 8 addresses a 2-year follow-up study of SNS in first episode patients. In Chapter 9 the dissertation ends with a general discussion of the current findings and suggestions for key areas for future research.

Abstract:
There has been much philosophical debate about whether the meaning of pictures can be analysed using theoretical frameworks normally employed within philosophy of language. A specific question within this debate is the question of whether pictures can express propositions. Instead of addressing this question in of pictures in a broad sense, this essay focuses on a specific category of pictures referred to as pictorial signs. These signs constitute a pictorial form of communication that we use in our everyday lives. The question of whether pictorial signs can express propositions should, because of this communicative use, be more approachable than the same question applied to pictures in general. While a standard approach to the question has been to investigate the extent to which pictures may share some syntactic or semantic features with natural language, the approach in this essay is instead to look at how pictorial signs are used. The suggested strategy is to approach the question of propositionality by attempting to translate a particular sign into some sentence in natural language on the basis of how the sign is used, rather than analysing its structure.

Abstract:

The success of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) combined with the detailed analysis of the small imperfections of the Cosmic Microwave Background blackbody spectrum lead to the conclusion that most of the matter content of our universe is made of some non-baryonic material, the dark matter!

In this thesis, we review the compiling indications of dark matter and the so-called freeze-out mechanism which may settle the relic density of the species in the framework of the standard Big Bang model. We also examine principally two methods of detection of dark matter, direct and indirect detection searches.

Let us stress that the Standard Model on its own is unable to provide enough aspirants for the role of dark matter. As a consequence, one has to dig into the tremendous domain of physics "Beyond the Standard Model" in order to have a chance to elucidate the problem of the missing mass.

In this thesis in particular, we consider the Inert Doublet Model (IDM) which includes an additional Higgs doublet, enclosing two neutral scalars candidates for dark matter. We invoke the Standard freeze-out mechanism for the production of dark matter. We get then dark matter candidates in two rather separate mass ranges, one between 40 and 80 GeV, the other one between 400 GeV and 1 TeV. We also show that dark matter annihilation at the galactic center can be at the origin of a gamma-ray flux which can be probed by the future GLAST experiment.

We address a low reheating temperature scenario for the genesis of dark matter in a Left-Right symmetric extension of the Standard Model. The candidate for dark matter is a MeV right-handed neutrino and we show that a baryon-dark matter interaction at the galactic center can be the source of the low energy positrons responsible for the 511 keV gamma-ray excess observed by the INTEGRAL experiment in the galactic bulge region.

Finally, prompted by the possibility to explain the baryon and dark matter rather similar abundances by one single "Matter Genesis" mechanism, we study a non-thermal production mechanism for dark matter. The framework is also Left-Right symmetric and dark candidate is a ~3 GeV right handed neutrino.

Börstell, Carl. "Revisiting Reduplication : Toward a description of reduplication in predicative signs in Swedish Sign Language." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för lingvistik, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-63510.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the use of reduplication with predicative signs in Swedish Sign Language (SSL), and also the related phenomena doubling and displacement. Reduplication in SSL typically expresses plurality of events and/or referents, but may also express intensification, ongoing event or generic activity. There is a distinction between external and internal events with reduplication: external reduplication expresses some event happening over and over at different points in time and/or with different referents, and is associated with a frequentative/habitual reading; internal reduplication expresses some event consisting of several e.g. movements/actions and is associated with an ongoing reading. Only external expression seems to be applicable to stative constructions, as one would expect. The study also found a phenomenon not previously described: oral reduplication without manual reduplication. This process is found to have the ongoing functions with telic predicates, such that it focuses on the telic predicate as a single event in progress, and thus replaces the function of manual reduplication, which, with telic predicates, would instead express several events. The reading of reduplicated signs is associated with the semantics of the sign reduplicated, and it is also associated with the phonological citation form of the sign—monosyllabic signs tend to get pluractional reading; bisyllabic signs tend to get an ongoing reading. Also, the reading expressed by reduplication is connected to the presence/absence of oral reduplication. Reduplication generally does not occur in negative constructions. This study shows that inherently negative signs may be reduplicated, but reduplicated predicates are negated according to other strategies than for non-reduplicated predicates, thus reduplication has the largest scope. Doubling and displacement are both associated mainly with plural referents, and it is in this respect that they are related to reduplication, and they both occur frequently with reduplication.

Barker, Julie A. "Improvement of Conspicuity for Trailblazing Signs." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36631.

Full text
Abstract:
This document represents efforts to design and evaluate a new sign design for emergency route trailblazing in a two-part series. Study 1 was an off-road field experiment conducted to determine the best color combination and letter design for the emergency sign. Based upon Study 1 results, black on coral, black on light blue, and yellow on purple signs were chosen for further testing against a baseline black on orange sign, all with 125-mm, D series letters. Study 2 was an on-road field study of conspicuity, conducted using an instrumented vehicle through a construction zone-related detour, and a survey questionnaire. The findings indicated that use of a color combination other than traditional black on orange will improve driver performance and safety when used for trailblazing during critical incidents. Based on the conclusions and other anecdotal evidence, the following recommendations were made: 1) Do not use black on orange signs for trailblazing around a critical incident if an existing detour/construction zone is in place; 2) Do not use a black on coral sign for trailblazing around a critical incident; 3) A light blue on black sign is recommended due to generally favorable subjective ratings and for minimization of turn errors in an overlapping detour; however, the black on light blue sign may resemble regulatory signs when headlights reflect onto it; and 4) If reject black on light blue signs based on (3), consider using yellow on purple signs, which resulted in fewer turn errors than black on orange and received generally favorable ratings.

Meyer, Debbie. "Aerodynamic Testing of Variable Message Signs." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1616.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing nationwide interest in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and the need for more efficient transportation have led to the expanding use of variable message sign (VMS) technology. VMS panels are substantially heavier than flat panel aluminum signs and have a larger depth (dimension parallel to the direction of traffic). The additional weight and depth can have a significant effect on the aerodynamic forces and inertial loads transmitted to the support structure. The wind induced drag forces and the response of VMS structures is not well understood. Minimum design requirements for VMS structures are contained in the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials Standard Specification for Structural Support for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals (AASHTO Specification). However the Specification does not take into account the prismatic geometry of VMS and the complex interaction of the applied aerodynamic forces to the support structure. In view of the lack of code guidance and the limited number research performed so far, targeted experimentation and large scale testing was conducted at the Florida International University (FIU) Wall of Wind (WOW) to provide reliable drag coefficients and investigate the aerodynamic instability of VMS. A comprehensive range of VMS geometries was tested in turbulence representative of the high frequency end of the spectrum in a simulated suburban atmospheric boundary layer. The mean normal, lateral and vertical lift force coefficients, in addition to the twisting moment coefficient and eccentricity ratio, were determined using the measured data for each model. Wind tunnel testing confirmed that drag on a prismatic VMS is smaller than the 1.7 suggested value in the current AASHTO Specification (2013). An alternative to the AASHTO Specification code value is presented in the form of a design matrix. Testing and analysis also indicated that vortex shedding oscillations and galloping instability could be significant for VMS signs with a large depth ratio attached to a structure with a low natural frequency. The effect of corner modification was investigated by testing models with chamfered and rounded corners. Results demonstrated an additional decrease in the drag coefficient but a possible Reynolds number dependency for the rounded corner configuration.

Full text
Abstract:
More than sixty years after Michael Ventris’ decipherment of the Linear B script, 14 of its 87 syllabic signs still have no sound-values assigned to them. This group of ‘undeciphered’ signs represent a significant gap in our ability not only to read the Linear B script, but also to understand its development and use. Chapter 1 of this thesis analyses the origins and usage of signs with known sound-values to establish what types of values are in principle most likely to be found amongst the undeciphered signs: this investigation also enables an exploration of the development of Linear B, its relationship with its parent script Linear A, and the motivating factors underlying the creation of new Linear B signs. Chapter 2 consists of studies of each individual undeciphered sign, including a palaeographic analysis of their forms, discussion of their corpus of attestations, and an examination of their prospects of decipherment and possible sound-values in the light of the results of Chapter 1. Finally, Chapter 3 employs this group of signs in a case-study to explore the potential of palaeographic analysis to contribute to our understanding of wider issues concerning the Linear B script and its context of use within the Mycenaean palaces. This case-study focuses in particular on two main uses of palaeography: as a means of assigning a relative chronology to Linear B texts, and as evidence for the reconstruction of the Mycenaean scribes’ administrative work and training.

Chandrasekaran, Vikram. "Measuring Vital Signs Using Smart Phones." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc33139/.

Full text
Abstract:
Smart phones today have become increasingly popular with the general public for its diverse abilities like navigation, social networking, and multimedia facilities to name a few. These phones are equipped with high end processors, high resolution cameras, built-in sensors like accelerometer, orientation-sensor, light-sensor, and much more. According to comScore survey, 25.3% of US adults use smart phones in their daily lives. Motivated by the capability of smart phones and their extensive usage, I focused on utilizing them for bio-medical applications. In this thesis, I present a new application for a smart phone to quantify the vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure with the help of its built-in sensors. Using the camera and a microphone, I have shown how the blood pressure and heart rate can be determined for a subject. People sometimes encounter minor situations like fainting or fatal accidents like car crash at unexpected times and places. It would be useful to have a device which can measure all vital signs in such an event. The second part of this thesis demonstrates a new mode of communication for next generation 9-1-1 calls. In this new architecture, the call-taker will be able to control the multimedia elements in the phone from a remote location. This would help the call-taker or first responder to have a better control over the situation. Transmission of the vital signs measured using the smart phone can be a life saver in critical situations. In today's voice oriented 9-1-1 calls, the dispatcher first collects critical information (e.g., location, call-back number) from caller, and assesses the situation. Meanwhile, the dispatchers constantly face a "60-second dilemma"; i.e., within 60 seconds, they need to make a complicated but important decision, whether to dispatch and, if so, what to dispatch. The dispatchers often feel that they lack sufficient information to make a confident dispatch decision. This remote-media-control described in this system will be able to facilitate information acquisition and decision-making in emergency situations within the 60-second response window in 9-1-1 calls using new multimedia technologies.

Matts, Timothy. "Violent signs : ecocriticism and the symptom." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/19520/.

Abstract:
This thesis recommends that the ‘ecocritical’ turn in American Literary Scholarship be brought into contact with ‘symptomnal’ forms of ideology critique, namely after the post-Althusserian thinking of Fredric Jameson, Slavoj Žižek and Deleuze-Guattari. This recommendation is made on the basis that the ecocritical turn has neglected to apprise itself of a thoroughgoing prehistory; by bringing together the lessons of Marx and Lacan, post-Althusserian thinking enables us to address the disavowal of formal and theoretical concerns constitutive of first-wave ecocriticism, and to acknowledge this as symptomatic of North American cultural and political pluralism more broadly. Where such disavowal promoted a widespread rejection of poststructural theories of immanence in the Americanist milieu of the 1980s, I consider how it effectively blocked psychoanalytic and Marxist approaches to literary form and human subjectivity. Following an initial examination of ecocriticism after Althusser and Balibar’s thesis on ‘symptomnal reading’, my study goes on to reassert issues of subjectivity for ecocriticism. Žižek’s subjectivist approach to ideology critique enables a diagnosis of the legacy of modern epistemology and thereafter analysis of ecocritical motivations of sublime aesthetics. By pursuing broader, ‘valetudinary’ issues in relation to literary form, the latter half of the thesis exceeds the former’s emphasis on ideology critique, moving instead to engage the post-subjectivist, ‘schizoanalytic’ project of Deleuze and Guattari. Predicated upon an a-subjective philosophy of differential relations, schizoanalysis enables us to reappraise eco-literary and eco-philosophical concerns, chiefly after post-symptomatological analyses of the relationship between high modern literature, pre-personal affect and the ‘eco-social’ coding of desire. It is in this way that I assert the ‘body without organs’ as the privileged clinical figure with which to address eco-social organisation, and thus, exceed the subjectivist logic of the symptom.

Abstract:
This report considers the research, analysis and development of an alternative process for controlling end-user electrical power quality, as well as reflected load modulation and transients on the incoming electricity supply grid. In the past, power quality issues associated with the grid network, were usually generated by the connected loads, this has changed in today’s grid system with embedded intermittent renewable energy being included on the energy profile. The intermittency of the added input is being smoothed by the large scale generation on the network. A high level of renewable penetration is said to have been reached when additional effort is required to optimise PV integration. The analysis is built on the assumption that the electrical supply grid will continue to play a vital role in supplying electrical energy to industry and domestic customers for the foreseeable future. A report released in 2009 by the Australian Federal Government in Smart Grid Technologies recognised that through a communications network the consumer could play a vital role in maintaining power quality, offsetting peak loading and integrating embedded power generation. The concept of Switched Intelligent Grid Networking Systems (SIGNS) to control end-user electrical power quality is to act as an intelligent buffer between the electrical grid supply and the load to select the most appropriate energy source. In addition SIGNS could effectively absorb a proportion of any surges and transients, at the same time as offering a path for augmented alternative energy. The concept is built on a harvest, storage model as illustrated below (rain water tank water storage). In this system energy, like water, is collected over a period of time, stored and then used as required, allowing the storage medium to absorb peaks and surges in power. Over the past five years domestic energy costs to the consumer have risen by 91%, this cost has not been driven entirely by production of energy, but more so by; • the expense of maintaining power quality over the distribution network, • the cost of money, the global financial crisis and availability of funds, • aging infrastructure, • the complexity of the distribution of and the uncontrolled nature of, feed-in generators, • growth in demand, It is expected that the price of electricity will experience further increases as the Advanced Metering Infrastructure AMI is rolled out to accommodate the complexity of metering across the National Energy Market (NEM) and the Wholesale Energy Market in Western Australia (WEM), which is expected to be completed by 2017. The price of electrical energy between 2017 and 2018 is expected to be stable because increases in energy costs will be offset by the reductions in costs associated with rolling out the AMI. The complexities of power distribution networks, the growing demand for efficiency providing cheaper energy and the increased demand for power quality are eroding the viability of the current network structure. The tried and proven method of maintaining stability by oversizing the generating capacity is at odds with deregulation and the struggle for new efficiencies. If the suppliers were to refocus energy quality as a joint responsibility of both suppliers and consumers, it would possibly enable the existing infrastructure in the NEM and WEM to extend its offerings, increase efficiency and potentially lower energy costs. The research undertaken vii exposed a number of problems associated with switching energy systems in and out of the network, in particular when switching inductive loads with poor power factors (pf). These factors are exacerbated where the final switching components, utilise mechanical devices, which also further impede efforts to synchronise power sources. Use of these devices is a requirement of AS/NZ 3000 clause 2.3.22, where it is stated that generation equipment must be isolated via a mechanical contact. Nevertheless, research into, Switched Intelligent Grid Network Systems (SIGNS) has shown that it is possible to; • increase the renewable energy component, assisting the grid, without actually exporting energy to the grid, • assist in maintaining energy quality to within specified limits, • offer a degree of autonomy from the grid, especially during power outages, • reduce peak loading on the grid, • lower greenhouse emissions through improved efficiency and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:
Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder that has a profound effect on both the individuals affected and society. This common mental illness is a complex, heterogeneous behavioural and cognitive syndrome that seems to originate from disruption of brain development caused by genetic or environmental factors, or both. The genetic basis may be present in individuals without disease, as in the case of relatives of patients, being detectable through biological markers. Neurological soft signs (NSS) are discrete sensorimotor impairments associated with deviant brain development that were postulate as an endophenotype of schizophrenic spectrum disorder. Also the personality traits have been proposed as a vulnerability marker in schizophrenia. A specific profile of temperament and character and the schizotypal personality traits have also been correlated with schizotypal personality traits. These traits and some neurological abnormalities have been shown to aggregate in the relatives of schizophrenia patients. The etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia suggests it may be a "progressive neurodevelopmental disorder". This view postulates a disruption in functional circuits involving hetero modal association areas rather than a specific abnormality in a single brain region. The aim of this study is to explore the abnormalities in the functional connectivity of the default mode network related to the association between neurological soft signs and personality in schizophrenia. To investigate this a cross-sectional study is proposed, comparing a group of patients with schizophrenia, a group of unaffected relatives and a group of healthy controls. In order to explore the association of these potential biomarkers of schizophrenia the study was composed of two parts: a) To explore the association between neurological soft signs and personality traits in schizophrenia, two personality examinations (Temperament and Character Inventory and the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire) and an evaluation of Neurological Soft Signs were performed. b) To explore the association between cerebral connectivity changes in the default mode network with the presence of neurological soft signs in schizophrenia a functional magnetic resonance scan was performed on participants in a resting state. The major finding in this study was that patients with schizophrenia and non-psychotic relatives display a unique profile of temperament and character and more schizotypal traits that correlate with higher presence of NSS. Our results reveal an association between these hypothesized vulnerability markers, as temperament (especially harm avoidance, reward dependence and persistence) and character (especially self-directedness and cooperativeness) correlated with the presence of NSS in the entire sample. Also the schizotypal traits (total scores and subscores) showed a very strong correlation with the presence of NSS in the entire sample. The results showed that susceptibility to NSS and to schizophrenia are both related to individual differences in personality features in non-psychotic relatives of patients with schizophrenia. These findings highlight the value of using both assessments to study high risk populations. The neuroimaging results showed connectivity changes in the default mode network with a possible association with the presence of neurological soft signs. These findings support the theory of cognitive dysmetria as a possible dysfunction in cortical-thalamic-cerebellar connectivity. This model also could explain the diversity of symptoms in schizophrenia and their associations (like this study that includes personality and sensory and motor functions). One strength of the study is that the relatives of patients with schizophrenia had no familial ties to the patients used, thus decreasing the possibility that similar upbringing would confound the results.

Abstract:
Reading development is supported by strong language skills, not least in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. The work in the present thesis investigates reading development in DHH children who use sign language, attend Regional Special Needs Schools (RSNS) in Sweden and are learning to read. The primary aim of the present work was to investigate whether the reading skills of these children can be improved via computerized sign language based literacy training. Another aim was to investigate concurrent and longitudinal associations between skills in reading, sign language, and cognition in this population. The results suggest that sign language based literacy training may support development of word reading. In addition, awareness and manipulation of the sub-lexical structure of sign language seem to assist word reading, and imitation of familiar signs (i.e., vocabulary) may be associated with developing reading comprehension. The associations revealed between sign language skills and reading development support the notion that sign language skills provide a foundation for emerging reading skills in DHH signing children. In addition, the results also suggest that working memory and Theory of Mind (ToM) are related to reading comprehension in this population. Furthermore, the results indicate that sign language experience enhances the establishment of representations of manual gestures, and that progression in ToM seems to be typical, although delayed, in RSNS pupils. Working memory has a central role in integrating environmental stimuli and language-mediated representations, and thereby provides a platform for cross-modal language processing and multimodal language development.

People with deafness or hearing disabilities who aim to use computer based systems rely on state-of-art video classification and human action recognition techniques that combine traditional movement pat-tern recognition and deep learning techniques. In this work we present a pipeline for semi-automatic video annotation applied to a non-annotated Peru-vian Signs Language (PSL) corpus along with a novel method for a progressive detection of PSL elements (nSDm). We produced a set of video annotations in-dicating signs appearances for a small set of nouns and numbers along with a labeled PSL dataset (PSL dataset). A model obtained after ensemble a 2D CNN trained with movement patterns extracted from the PSL dataset using Lucas Kanade Opticalflow, and a RNN with LSTM cells trained with raw RGB frames extracted from the PSL dataset reporting state-of-art results over the PSL dataset on signs classification tasks in terms of AUC, Precision and Recall.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis project is to develop the Traffic Sign Recognition algorithm for real time. Inreal time environment, vehicles move at high speed on roads. For the vehicle intelligent system itbecomes essential to detect, process and recognize the traffic sign which is coming in front ofvehicle with high relative velocity, at the right time, so that the driver would be able to pro-actsimultaneously on instructions given in the Traffic Sign. The system assists drivers about trafficsigns they did not recognize before passing them. With the Traffic Sign Recognition system, thevehicle becomes aware of the traffic environment and reacts according to the situation. The objective of the project is to develop a system which can recognize the traffic signs in real time. The three target parameters are the system’s response time in real-time video streaming, the trafficsign recognition speed in still images and the recognition accuracy. The system consists of threeprocesses; the traffic sign detection, the traffic sign recognition and the traffic sign tracking. Thedetection process uses physical properties of traffic signs based on a priori knowledge to detect roadsigns. It generates the road sign image as the input to the recognition process. The recognitionprocess is implemented using the Pattern Matching algorithm. The system was first tested onstationary images where it showed on average 97% accuracy with the average processing time of0.15 seconds for traffic sign recognition. This procedure was then applied to the real time videostreaming. Finally the tracking of traffic signs was developed using Blob tracking which showed theaverage recognition accuracy to 95% in real time and improved the system’s average response timeto 0.04 seconds. This project has been implemented in C-language using the Open Computer VisionLibrary.

Abstract:
Thesis (MCom)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Kohler Signs (PTY) Ltd is a sign production company located in Cape Town, South Africa. They manufacture and install signs for the City of Cape Town and private companies as well as manufacture advertisement signs to be placed on vehicles. Road signs consist of steel sheets that are cut and bent to the appropriate size and frame, and an image design, which is cut from re ective vinyl, are applied to the bent steel sheet. The image design consists of various letters, numbers and symbols which are categorised as irregular items. When these irregular items are combined in a distinctive way, with the use of di erent coloured vinyl, they convey a message to the road user which may be to yield for pedestrians crossing the street, or indicate to the road user the various highway exits that exist on the interchange ahead. These irregular items are placed upon re ective vinyl for cutting which results in vinyl o cuts that are wasted. The focus of this thesis is to minimise the waste incurred by placing these irregular items upon the vinyl in an optimal and timely manner for industry use. The vinyl printer, which cuts the irregular items out of the vinyl, consists of a xed width and is only limited in height by the vinyl itself. Thus, this problem may be described as a Two Dimensional Irregular Strip Packing Problem. These irregular items have only a few possible heights for each type of irregular item packed, which allows these irregular items to be packed as a level packing problem. The items are packed within levels as though they are regular items with the assistance of a prede ned rule-set. In this thesis various packing algorithms and image processing methodologies from the literature are researched and used to develop a new packing algorithm for this speci c problem. The newly developed algorithm is put through various benchmarks to test its performance. Some of these benchmarks are procured from Kohler Signs themselves, whereas others are randomly generated under certain conditions. These benchmarks reveal that the newly developed algorithm performs better for both the minimisation of waste and the minimisation of algorithm running time than the tried and trusted techniques utilised in industry by Kohler Signs.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kohler Signs (EDMS) Bpk is 'n padteken produksie maatskappy gele e in Kaapstad, Suid-Afrika.

Summary A result is discussed which permits the summing of series whose terms have more complicated sign patterns than simply alternating plus and minus. The Alternating Series Test, commonly taught in beginning calculus courses, is a corollary. This result, which is not difficult to prove, widens the series summable by beginning students and paves the way for understanding more advanced questions such as convergence of Fourier series. An elementary exposition is given of Dirichlet’s Test for the convergence of a series and an elementary example suitable for a beginning calculus class and a more advanced example involving a Fourier series which is appropriate for an advanced calculus class are provided. Finally, two examples are discussed for which Dirichlet’s Test does not apply and a general procedure is given for deciding the convergence or divergence of these and similar examples.

Abstract:
In Japan, the basics of living are described as three main elements; clothing, food, and shelter. These elements involve simple daily activities such as changing clothes in the morning, eating lunch, and sleeping at night. It may easily become a mundane topic since they are woven into our daily routines. Nevertheless, a moment in one's day may become joyful when we reconsider and play with the ordinary. The first trace of a dwelling in Japan is a pit shelter. People dug a circular pit in the ground, placed sticks vertically at the perimeter of the pit, and covered it with straws to make a roof. The dwelling protected people from the weather, animals and other tribes. The function of architecture may be as simple as that. Today, the purpose of making architecture is not dramatically different from the ancient times, yet the technology in our profession as well as in our daily routines have developed over thousands of years and changed the way of life. Today, one may easily get trapped in the graphical or stylish looks of architecture and ignore the fundamental reason to make architecture. Making architecture is quite an ordinary act. My intention for this thesis is to examine my daily activities and concerns and extract the essence of the Architecture that beautifully fulfills the function. I believe Architecture strongly influences people's experiences and feelings, and goal as a designer is to orchestrate spaces which will make one's ordinary day into an extraordinary one.

Abstract:
Food borne disease continues to be a significant public health concern. The increasing awareness of food borne illness intensifies the need for proper food safety education among food handlers. The objectives of this study were to develop bilingual (English/Spanish) food safety signs, to determine their comprehensibility and most effective delivery mechanism for presentation to food handlers. The food safety concepts developed into images were: cross-contamination, proper use of thermometer to check temperatures of foods, proper cooling of foods, and do not work with food if ill. The four food safety concepts were designed into three different formats: pictures and words (English/Spanish), pictures only, and lenticular (images that shift when viewed from different angles). The food safety signs were evaluated using forty-five individuals working in the food retail industry. The participants were divided into two groups according to native language (English/ Spanish). For comprehensibility of the food safety signs, 69% responses were noted as correct. The ranking of comprehensibility of the signs was: cross-contamination (93%), thermometer (84%), cooling (64%) and not working if ill (33%). A gap in the understanding of the two lowest scoring food safety concepts (cooling and ill) calls for food safety educational programs and materials that emphasize these concepts. Correct responses for sign presentation were as follows: pictures and words with (80%), pictures only (65%) and lenticular (62%). Comparison of three different formats indicated pictures with words as the most effective presentation. The results obtained can be used as the basics for designing effective food signage for food handlers.

Yang, Fan. "Object Detection for Contactless Vital Signs Estimation." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/42297.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the contactless estimation of people’s vital signs. We designed two camera-based systems and applied object detection algorithms to locate the regions of interest where vital signs are estimated. With the development of Deep Learning, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model has many applications in the real world nowadays. We applied the CNN based frameworks to the different types of camera based systems and improve the efficiency of the contactless vital signs estimation. In the field of medical healthcare, contactless monitoring draws a lot attention in the recent years because the wide use of different sensors. However most of the methods are still in the experimental phase and have never been used in real applications. We were interested in monitoring vital signs of patients lying in bed or sitting around the bed at a hospital. This required using sensors that have range of 2 to 5 meters. We developed a system based on the depth camera for detecting people’s chest area and the radar for estimating the respiration signal. We applied a CNN based object detection method to locate the position of the subject lying in the bed covered with blanket. And the respiratory-like signal is estimated from the radar device based on the detected subject’s location. We also create a manually annotated dataset containing 1,320 depth images. In each of the depth image the silhouette of the subject’s upper body is annotated, as well as the class. In addition, a small subset of the depth images also labeled four keypoints for the positioning of people’s chest area. This dataset is built on the data collected from the anonymous patients at the hospital which is substantial. Another problem in the field of human vital signs monitoring is that systems seldom contain the functions of monitoring multiple vital signs at the same time. Though there are few attempting to work on this problem recently, they are still all prototypes and have a lot limitations like shorter operation distance. In this application, we focused on contactless estimating subjects’ temperature, breathing rate and heart rate at different distances with or without wearing the mask. We developed a system based on thermal and RGB camera and also explore the feasibility of CNN based object detection algorithms to detect the vital signs from human faces with specifically defined RoIs based on our thermal camera system. We proposed the methods to estimate respiratory rate and heart rate from the thermal videos and RGB videos. The mean absolute difference (MAE) between the estimated HR using the proposed method and the baseline HR for all subjects at different distances is 4.24 ± 2.47 beats per minute, the MAE between the estimated RR and the reference RR for all subjects at different distances is 1.55 ± 0.78 breaths per minute.

Abstract:
Cardio-respiratory dysfunction, sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis are responsible for a large numberof deaths in the neonatal population. Despite ecient monitoring and screening in Intensive CareUnits, diagnosis prior to clinical symptoms remains a dicult task. Based on Heart Rate Monitoring, the state-of-the-art HeRO system indicates the risk for sepsis and has already proven its ability toreduce mortality in the neonatal ICU. Recent studies have shown that a particular respiratory behaviorknown as ABD-events, can be used as a physiomarker for sepsis and is therefore an early warningsign. Detecting ABD-events is currently done by simple thresholding techniques. Based on cardiorespiratorydata and hindsight from previous patients, we aim at improving the early warning systemby applying machine learning algorithms. Data with higher frequency than those used in the HeROsystem and biological samples are still to be collected, but still, using low frequency data, we managedto obtain a specicity (true positive) of 70% and a sensitivity (true negative) of 65% on manuallylabeled events. In this report, the theoretical framework is presented along with the practical issuesencountered during the project.

Brunning, Alizon. "Signs of change in Jacobean city comedy." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 1997. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/19035/.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with a study of a particular genre, Jacobean city comedy, in relation to its socio-economic and religious context. It aims to show that the structural forms of city comedy share similarities with structures in Jacobean social consciousness. By arguing that the plays are productions of a material age this study suggests that these structures are manifestations of ideological changes brought about by two related systems of thought: capitalism and Protestantism.

Beardmore, Michael Ian. "Ancient weather signs : texts, science and tradition." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/4103.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a new contextualisation of weather signs, naturally occurring terrestrial indicators of weather change (from, for example, animals, plants and atmospheric phenomena), in antiquity. It asks how the utility of this method of prediction was perceived and presented in ancient sources and studies the range of answers given across almost eight hundred years of Greek and Roman civilisation. The presentation of weather signs is compared throughout to that of another predictive method, astrometeorology, which uses the movement of the stars as markers of approaching weather. The first chapter deals with the presentation and discussion of weather signs in a range of Greek texts. It sees hesitant trust being placed in weather signs, lists of which were constructed so as to be underpinned by astronomical knowledge. The second chapter assesses how these Greek lists were received and assimilated into Roman intellectual discourse by looking to the strikingly similar practice of divining by portents. This lays the foundations for the final chapter, which describes and explains the Roman treatment of weather signs. Here, the perceived utility of weather signs can be seen to reduce rapidly as the cultural significance of astronomy reaches new heights. This thesis provides new readings and interpretations of a range of weather-based passages and texts, from the Pseudo-Theophrastan De Signis, to Lucan's Pharsalia, to Pliny's Natural History, many of which have previously been greatly understudied or oversimplified. It allows us to understand the social and scientific place of weather prediction in the ancient world and therefore how abstract and elaborate ideas and theories filtered in to the seemingly commonplace and everyday. I argue that between the 7th century BC and the end of the 1st century AD, the treatment of weather signs changes from being framed in fundamentally practical terms to one in which practical considerations were negligible or absent. As this occurred, astrometeorology comes to be seen as the only predictive method worthy of detailed attention. These two processes, I suggest, were linked.

Hardcastle, John. "Signs and classrooms : historical perspectives on the role of signs in human development, with particular reference to an urban classroom." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2003. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10007380/.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of language in development has been a central theme in post-war English. However, the European history of ideas about the role of signs has been insufficiently appreciated. I aim to enrich readings of contemporary urban classrooms by recovering something of this history. As the culmination of this work, I trace the story of a poem, written by a Black student in a London classroom, back into the history of discussions and debates that a class conducted with itself over five years. From perspectives provided by the history of ideas and recent work in social memory, I show how the student's representation of a childhood recollection (a visit to the site of a former plantation) was mediated and shaped by 'pedagogical artefacts'. I give a history of one such artefact as an instance of the role of signs in a contemporary classroom. A picture of language as human invention was drawn in the first instance during the European Enlightenment. From this picture a seminal theory about the role of signs in the mastery of mental operations emerged. On this view, memory and imagination depend upon signs. In the aftermath to the French Revolution, language was linked to conceptions of citizenship and human advancement. In Germany, the picture of language was redrawn in the light of Kant's epistemology, and connected to an educational ideal of selfcultivation. In the nineteenth century, 'cultural' psychology attempted unsuccessfully to combine a notion of signs in the development of higher mental functions with findings in experimental psychology. Subsequently, the introduction of a distinction between mental 'contents' and mental 'acts' fostered new research into the role of signs in consciousness. Concurrently, an ethical vision of symbolisation as the 'common ground' of humanity issued from a philosophy of symbolic forms. As a whole the thesis seeks to show the continuing relevance of this history.
