Full textIn this work communication, including its practices and technologies, is treated as a dynamic ritual formed by the marking, naming, connecting, and interpreting the environment in the process of wayfinding. Such an approach underscores the inherent duality of communication: its manifestations framed by transmission and ritual; its boundedness by both space and time; and its expression in both mobile and fixed (implaced) media. The thesis thus shifts the disciplinary discourse from the usual text- and language-based focus to a more comprehensive focus that encompasses architectural and infrastructural environments and the grounding action of physical presences. Through its focus on the navigational aspects of communication, and framing by such concepts as wayfinding and signposting, the thesis shows how we can reconfigure the notion of the visual to include the embodied, experiential, and implaced. This in turn can help us gain a new perspective on the changing nature of text, image, representation, information and reality.
The thesis argues that as the themes of orientation, navigation, and interface grow alongside the new communication technologies, they make it important to attend to the original mediating role of the built environment and the navigational dimensions of place. It is here, within our foundational spatial orientation and wayfinding, that we turn for the metaphors, conceptual structures, and grounding as we chart our ways through the emerging informational environments.
In examining signage as a system of interfaces used in negotiating informational environments, as way-markers in a process of wayfinding, the thesis demonstrates the ways in which the concepts of wayfinding and navigation have become consequential to communication scholarship. It proposes that fruitful cues for the theorising and understanding of emerging informational realms can be drawn from the communicative dimensions of the most familiar immersive environments and their related practices: the physical spaces and built environments that we inhabit and negotiate daily.

Full textThe aim of health communication campaigns and visual communication material (VCM) is to positively influence audience health behaviour and attitude. VCM has been used in this respect effectively as a vehicle to convey information about HIV/AIDS over the past three decades. It has been used to promote health knowledge and awareness in order to reduce the transmission of the virus. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of graphic imagery in HIV/AIDS VCM. To realise this aim, the researcher set the following objectives: * To review relevant literature in order to isolate key features and process those that communicators must consider/follow when developing HIV/AIDS VCM; * To determine the comprehension of selected outdoor HIV/AIDS messages, the graphics used in these messages, illustration preferences, and an evaluation of the self-efficacy of selected loveLife outdoor visual messages; and * To propose a model that communicators can use as a guideline when developing VCM. The outcome of the review suggests a compilation of features, design guidelines and variables that may contribute to the effectiveness of VCM. The results of the empirical study indicate that suitable graphic imagery fosters message comprehension, while inappropriate imagery inhibits comprehension, and realistic and appropriate imagery is preferred to abstract and representational imagery. Familiar images can contribute towards improved comprehension of HIV/AIDS messages. These findings also gave birth to the proposed ‘O’ communication model, which is a reflection of the results of the empirical study.

Full textThis thesis uses a norm-critical perspective to highlight the diversity presented from a selection of picture books published by swedish authors between the years 2016-2021. The work will focus on some of the norms that the picture book presents regarding, among other things, gender, functional variations and culture Furthermore, the picture book's multimodal communication method will be analyzed on the basis of the method approach semiotic modality and further examined through quantitative and qualitative analysis methods. This is to highlight the importance of the text and the equivalence of the illustration in the multimodal communication. In my process, a selection of nine books has been selected and critically examined on the basis of norm-critical criteria and through both conventional and iconic signs in order to create as comprehensive an analysis as possible. In conclusion the results of this study are presented where norms and/or themes that recur, or are not noticed, are also addressed in several of the books. Furthermore, the importance of the preschool educator's understanding of the picture book, norm criticism and inclusion is highlighted. Emphasis is placed on the educators understanding why regular reflections and analyzes of the material the preschool offers the children should be made.

Full textThis dissertation is resultant of an interdisciplinary research on co-occurrence of image (non verbal code) and word (verbal code) in German literature and cinema, considered through the analysis of two specific German speaking authors: a writer and a filmmaker. Initially I discuss some theories that may shed some light on the word-image question. Then I verify the problem of the co-occurrence based on the selected works and their analysis. I put an eye on the particular phenomenon in order to search for what is general in whatever concerns the use of word and image in the work of art and in the communication, going through the question of the poetic faculty that resides, potentially, in each language act, in each imagetic or linguistic creation, in any human communication manifestation.

This research is the final interpretant of the analytical process used to understand the relationship between Cinema and Literature permeated by the General Theory of Signs grounded by Charles Sanders Peirce, which is based in the connection established by the representamen, the object and the interpretant. From this, we can assay the elements present in the movie The Raven (2012) out from the plot of the tales written by Edgar A. Poe. In this case, the action of the indexical sign process ruled the way how we expounded the dynamic existence amidst the object, tales, and the representamen, cinema. As we know, there is a long time that the Literature and the Cinema have an informational interchange, by which they share many characteristics for using, for example, the same story for constructing a “new” script in a different system of signs. Jakobson called this exchange of constituent of language to another as intersemiotic translation. Considering this aspect, it was enclosed to the Peircean Semiotics, focusing on the index, in this research. Based on this, the discussions promoted by studious such as Deleuze (1983), Eco and Sebeok (1991), Ferraz Júnior (2012), Hutcheon (2013), Nöth (1990; 2003), Peirce (1975; 2003), Plaza (2003) e Santaella (1992, 1995, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2008) were included in our approaches in this work to describe references between texts from the verbal to the non-verbal system of signs. Based in these overlays, we decided to divide our work in three parts. In the first one, we discussed about Poe, in the field of Literature, and Peirce, in the area of semiotics; the second part has as specific focus the duty of the indexical representation method and the relation between the abduction of Peirce and the “ratiocination” of Poe; the third part is the analysis of some frames from the film The Raven according to the previous development of semiotic approach which had been argued until the third chapter.
