Abstract:
This is the fi rst in a planned series of papers dedicated to Polish Sign Language (PJM) signs denoting speech. It presents an analysis of twenty different signs attested in the Polish Sign Language Corpus (KPJM) in terms of iconicity as well as metonymies and metaphors used in their formation. The conducted analysis showed that two classes of signs can be distinguished in the examined material: iconic signs making use of metonymy and signs motivated by a conceptual metaphor. The former refer exclusively to the production of speech as opposed to signing: the vehicle is the phonetic act (mouth movement or air movement). Metaphoric signs, in turn, consistently rely on the conduit metaphor, refer to both spoken and signed utterances, and focus on transmission of a semantic content.

Van, Wyck Peter C. "Signs of dangerdangerous signs : responding to nuclear threat." Thesis, McGill University, 1997. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=35417.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis ("Signs of Danger/Dangerous Signs: Responding to Nuclear Threat") is a poststructural, interdisciplinary exploration of the social, political and cultural workings of nuclear threat. Drawing extensively on a nuclear waste burial initiative being undertaken by the United States Department of Energy, this work is a detailed critical analysis of the relationships between the threats posed by nuclear wastes, and the responses provoked in relation to such threats.
Working through such theorists as Jacques Lacan and Slavoj Zˆizˆek (the second death, and le Reel), Francois Ewald (thresholds), Ulrich Beck (risk society), and Felix Guattari (ecology of the virtual), this work demonstrates the manner in which ecological threats, such as that posed by the nuclear, are (paradoxically) "creative" forces; that is, they have a propensity to cut through traditional social divisions (e.g., class, race), assembling news lines of affinity, and new constituencies of those at risk. Indeed, it seem that nuclear threat constitutes a novel form of threat. A form of threat that is irreducibly material, yet admits of no objective ground upon which decisions may be made. A form of threat that threatens the very biological foundations of life, yet whose ontology is to be determined through social and cultural responses.
The principle critical figure I use to analyse and illustrate the movement of threat is the vast monument/sign which is to be constructed above the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in the desert near Carlsbad, New Mexico. If constructed, this monument will be one of the largest public works project in history. The purpose of this monument is to signify the danger which is to be buried below and thereby deter---for a legislated period of 10,000 years---inadvertent human intrusion into the site. Through analyses of the semiotic issues raised by the desert monument, the appropriation of the practice of burial and its relations to cultural conceptions of death, and the use of the desert as the mise-en-scene of waste, this dissertation shows how the larger context of waste burial demonstrates an extreme and unexamined field of cultural trauma and disavowal around issues of nuclear threat.

Wymant, Christopher Mark. "Signs of Susy." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7350/.

Full text
Abstract:
After a brief introduction to 21st century fundamental physics suitable for the layman with a reasonable level of mathematical competence, I introduce the concept of unnaturalness in Standard Model electroweak symmetry breaking and Supersymmetry (Susy) as a potential solution. The optimally natural situation in Susy in light of the 2012 discovery of a Higgs boson is derived, namely that of almost maximal mixing, with the scalar top partners almost as light as can be. The discovery is also interpreted numerically in terms of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, with greater emphasis placed on the visibility of the Higgs boson at the observed mass, i.e. on signal strengths. I introduce simple models of gauge-mediated Susy breaking (GMSB), and how their generalisation leads to a richer parameter space. I then investigate the role played by the mediation scale of GMSB: this is found to be as a control of the extent to which Yukawa couplings de-tune flavour-blind relations set by gauge couplings. Finally, issues relating to the discovery or exclusion of Susy at colliders are discussed. Bounds are derived for the masses of new particles from Large Hadron Collider searches for excesses of jets and missing energy without leptons, and compared to constraints arising from Higgs boson searches, for models of GMSB and the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. I present a novel search strategy for new physics signatures with two neutral, stable particles, when such particles are produced by boosted decays. (Susy examples include models with light gravitinos, pseudo-goldstinos, singlinos or new photinos.) The method is shown to produce sharp mass peaks that enhance the visibility of the signal.

Abstract:
Background/Problematization: Many purchase decisions are made in-store and one wayof influencing the decision making process is through signs. Signs are said to drawattention to the product on which they are placed and result in increased sales. Sale signsare widely used to influence purchase decisions, but are there other types of signs that canimpact the purchase decision? Recommendations have also shown to affect consumer’spurchase decisions. However, most of the research within the subject have been done on thepower of social influences from friends and family, e.g. strong-tie relationships. Howrecommendations from experts (e.g. weak-tie relationships) can influence purchases is lessresearched, especially which type of recommendation sign have the most effect. Purpose: The purpose is to examine and map how different types of signs on shelvesrelated to staff recommendations for specific products affect their sales. Method: The scientific approach of the study is deductive and the corresponding researchmethod is a quantitative study with an experimental design and a descriptive focus. Anexperiment was executed in a supermarket on 28 products to test stimuli with differentlevels of information concerning staff recommendations with the use of signs. Result/Conclusion: The result showed only one stimuli to have significantly increasedsales. The stimuli consisted of adding a name of a specific staff member to therecommendation sign. The increase in sales might however have been caused by otherfactors than the applied sign as the outbreak of Covid-19 resulted in changed consumerbehavior at the time of the experiment. The results showed that no significant differences insales could be seen according to the number of alternatives each product had. This mighthowever be a result of the tampered data caused by the changed consumer behavior.

In ASME 2012 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Full text
Abstract:
Although a large number of crash tests have been performed between passenger cars and rigid fixed traffic signs, the number of real tests focusing on crashworthiness of portable roll-up signs is still limited. Because a standard, portable roll-up sign contains at least three kinds of dissimilar materials, such as steel for the base, fiberglass for the batten, vinyl for the sign, and because the sign’s configuration is more complicated than a rigid fixed sign, it is important to simulate the behavior of portable roll-up signs in collision. In this paper, a fine-mesh finite element model precisely representing the portable roll-up sign was created and used together with a car model to simulate the process of impact with 0 and 90 degree orientation. The simulation was performed using LS-DYNA software. Techniques for creating the finite element model were discussed. Afterwards this finite element model, being validated and verified through real tests, can be used for parametric and/or robust design.

Full text
Abstract:
A comprehensive study is needed to address the human behavior at railroad grade crossings. Human behavior at different signs changes and it may lead to crashes. No guidance is provided in the recommendations provided by Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices where and when different type of signs and different combination of signs are appropriate. Crashes occur mostly when the drivers try to go through the gate or around the gate when a train is approaching. Drivers come to a complete stop at stop signs and then proceed only if a train is not coming, this may lead to a crash when they cannot accelerate in time to cross the tracks. Yield sign may have better results in this case. Cross-buck signs are same as the yield sign where drivers should slow down, look for the train and then proceed. However, people may tend to proceed without yielding as it is not as common of a sign. Hence we can say driver behavior at specific sign is important for the recommendation or the guideline to install a sign. Adopting a common sign at all grade crossings could provide enhanced consistency and reduce crashes. A literature review was done on human behavior at grade crossings and the crash rate at different types of signs. Driver behavior at the time of the crash for 15 states was studied from the Federal Railroad Administration data by reviewing detailed reasons for every crash. Driver behavior at different types of signs at the time of each crash was studied from the reviewed data and the literature review. Driver behavior at different signs was summarized.

Abstract:
Traffic sign detection and recognition is an important part of Advance Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), which aims to provide assistance to the driver, autonomous driving, or even monitoring of traffic signs for maintenance. Particularly, misclassification of traffic signs may have severe negative impact on safety of drivers, infrastructures, and human in the surrounding environment. In addition to shape and colors, there are many challenges to recognize traffic signs correctly such as occlusion, motion blur, visual camera’s failures, or physically altering the integrity of traffic signs. In Literature, different machine learning based classifiers and deep classifiers are utilized for Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), with a few studies consider sequences of frames to commit final decision about traffic signs. This paper proposes a robust TSR against different attacks/failures such as camera related failures, occlusion, broken signs, and patches inserted on traffic signs. We are planning to utilize generative adversarial networks to corrupt images of traffic signs and investigate the robustness of TSR. Furthermore, we are currently working on designing a failure detector, which will help the TSR in advance before recognition, whether images are corrupted with some type of failure. Our conjecture is that failure detector with classifiers will improve the robustness of TSR system.

Abstract:
Currently, signs for promoting recreational marine activities have not been proposed. In this study, we proposed an action-prompting sign using a pictogram of beach volleyball, and we conducted a survey with the objective of determining the effectiveness of the sign in prompting action, as well as its problems. According to the results of a questionnaire concerning the action-prompting sign used in the study, we found that a sign representing beach volleyball has a prompting effect and that the sign is suitable for use near water.

Abstract:
Background: Striatal hand signs, first described by Charcot, are reported in 10% of advanced Parkinson’s Disease patients as flexion of the metacarpophalangeal joints, extension of proximal interphalangeal joints, flexion of distal interphalangeal joints and ulnar deviation. Another deformation is the metacarpophalangeal joints flexion and thumb medialization (U shaped - “Monkey-Wrench sign”). We believe that mild hand deformities are present in earlier phases of the disease and may help the diagnosis of PD. Objectives: To identify hand deformities in PD patient. Methods: We evaluated 36 PD patients, according to UKPDS Brain Bank Diagnostic Criteria, side of onset, disease duration, severity by UPDRS part III - left/ right side, hand deformities and the “monkey-wrench sign”. Results: We had 14 patients 10 years. 2/3 had left side onset. 33 patients (91.67%) presented the “Monkey- Wrench sign”, unilaterally or asymmetrically, and it was present in all PD patients > 4 years of disease onset, but it was present only in 78.6% less than 4 years. The “MW” sign was easily detected in the more affected side, with a mean UPDRS score of 31.1 on the side of striatal hand signs compared to the mean score of 24.7 on the less affected side. Conclusions: Striatal hand deformities and the “Monkey-Wrench” sign may be useful to diagnosis PD, if unilateral or asymmetrical signs, as well as, it could be used to differentiate between tremors of PD and other etiologies, in a more visual way.

Coyner, Kelley, and Jason Bittner. Automated Vehicles and Infrastructure Enablers: Pavement Markings and Signs. SAE International, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2022011.

Full text
Abstract:
Transportation infrastructure systems serve as the platform for emerging automated vehicle (AV) technologies and, in their current condition, limit the reliability of these new vehicles. Road conditions, lane markings, and signs provide essential guidance and information to both human- and machine-controlled vehicles; however, their condition and placement vary depending on local conditions, practices, and funding. Irregular sign placements and road markings confuse both human and machine drivers and can create unsafe conditions. Still, in the short term, they are the easiest factor to adjust regarding successful AV deployment.
