Abstract:
Abstract American composer Louise Talma’s opera The Alcestiad can be read as a highly autobiographical work; its themes can be understood as crucial elements of Talma’s own life. These correlations include: the demands and restrictions of society upon women’s behavior and desires, particularly its emphasis upon conforming to heteronormative performance, represented by Alcestis’s hesitant acceptance of marriage and motherhood, and Talma’s reluctant career as a pedagogue and internal conflict over her relationship with Nadia Boulanger; and the yearning for a life of devotion to a religion and a single art, in which Alcestis’s desire to serve as an oracular priestess of Apollo and Talma’s desire to dedicate herself to her work as a Catholic and as a composer are parallel tropes. This essay explores these parallels and demonstrates the ways in which the close relationships between The Alcestiad and Talma’s life are manifested in Talma’s use of rhythm in text-setting within the work.

Abstract:
This paper aims to discuss some meanings of the noun șoaptă/ ‘whisper’ (derived by backformation), as reflected in the confessional poetry of Traian Dorz - a contemporary Romanian author whose work is undoubtedly the fruit of the spiritual experiences that have decisively marked his existential route. In fact, the relationship of the human being with God (in the earthly sphere, but also from the perspective of eternity) remains a constant theme of this work dedicated to the astonishing feeling of His unmistakable love, in connection with which everything is situated, more than once, within the coordinates of the unspeakable: it is a special kind of “verbalization,” which offers the opportunity to live in a true spiritual discipline, substituting (and suppressing) any other form of confession through ordinary words. In addition to simply illustrating such expressive valences that contribute to the achievement of the textual construction, the meanings of the above-mentioned noun highlight the deep feelings of the authorial ego, always ascending on the path of mystical knowledge, and are placed on a positive semantic direction, as a special way of inner “speech”, in the absence of which communication would be inconceivable.

Abstract:
This article examines how exhaustiveness serves as a guiding principal for certain exhibitions, and particularly as a means of critiquing selection as the dominant method of promoting specific artworks, artists, and movements. It begins by outlining the possible genealogies of this attitude in the history of exhibition forms, as well as artists’ experiments with these forms. It then focuses on the work of curators Michael Fehr, Véronique Souben, and Rebecca Duclos and David K. Ross, who, in different contexts, have used notions of inventory and storage to exhaustively present collections. These practices represent strategies of resistance and critique whose contemporary relevance needs to be evaluated alongside their strengths and weaknesses.

Abstract:
Translation of cultural references can be effective and beneficially achieve various purposes depending on how they are transferred into another language. Virtually, cultural references refer to any word with considerably conceptual effects used for influencing conventional and societal intents. However, cultural references that are relatively belonged to a certain language are not equally observed in culture of another language; they derive their significations from the cultural characteristics of a community. Wherefore, cultural significations suchlike conventions, aesthetic values, and doctrines which are directly concerned with bridging intents lose their intentional importance or even work the opposite in another language. The incompatibility of dramatic references in their stylization of functions will problematically bring unparalleled pragmatic conceptions in both languages. Therefrom, this study objectively aims at: comparing cultural references in both languages, their impacts, and the extents of their influences; testing the validity of the adopted translational procedures in resolving cultural mutual exclusiveness; setting out some translational strategies for

Abstract:
This study employs semiotic theory to explore the visual symbols and their meanings in contemporary Chinese art. By analyzing the visual symbols of specific artworks through case studies and interpreting their meanings centered around Roland Barthes's theory of myth, the research delves into the association between art and semiotics in various artistic forms including two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and digital visual symbols. Focusing on works created after the 1979 'Star Art Exhibition', it provides a nuanced understanding of the semiotics and visual symbols in contemporary Chinese art, demonstrating semiotics as a valuable framework for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that through semiotic analysis, contemporary Chinese art can be seen as a 'text' with profound socio-cultural meanings, enhancing our comprehension of the intricate interplay and deeper significations between contemporary art and signs.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate and describe significations of the experience of cardiopaths who were submitted to cardiac surgery, using the Gestalt-therapy as theoretical basis. The sample was composed by five post surgical pacientes, one woman and four men, ageing between 52 and 65 years old, married, self-declared white and brown, with scholarly between fundamental and medium levels. After the semiestructered intervieweds were done, the data was analysed through the tematic content analysis. The results of this study expose that the main significations related to the cardiac surgery refer to the threat to surviving, lost of control over yourself, lost of authonomy and independence. The surgical process demands a constant work of the pacient orientation system in order to exist the maintenance of the homeostasis in the organism, existing a diversity of individual regulatory reactions which contributes for the restauration of the balance of the environment in which they are located.

Abstract:
Abstract Notwithstanding its critical and refutative method and scope, which are so different from his subsequent phenomenological work, Husserl’s Prolegomena to Pure Logic lays the foundations for that later work. His refutation of relativism is based upon the existence of a general form for scientific “foundations”, the availability of non-linguistic evidence of pure significations and the possibility of the subject reflecting upon its own acts, which also pave the way for Phenomenology. This paper also points out that, although the later relativist philosophy often rested on exactly the opposite theses of the Prolegomena, the arguments of this work were not seriously discussed or refuted.

Abstract:
This essay revisits one of Polish artist Zofia Kulik’s most important ‘photocarpets’, produced in a moment of hope, retrospection yet continuing war in 1993; seen by an international public in 1997. Visually, its composition is dominated by late Soviet sculptures symbolising Mother Russia and military aggression, yet the composition, ‘kilim-like’, with an additional reference to Polish Catholicism, involves bilateral and rotational symmetries which undermine significations of power and might with various other symbols: bodies, naked or draped, and Polish TV screenshots from both the military and entertainment worlds. ‘Dazzle’, the camouflage-related military term is also related to tears and (repressed) mourning. The female artist’s attitude to gender is crucial. The piece is both a ‘revisualisation’ and ‘rewriting’, relating both to the author’s previous texts on the artist from 1999 and 2001, and Kulik’s own rediscovery of her Ukrainian heritage, which reframes her own vision and understanding of the piece in 2022.

Abstract:
AbstractConsidering as a starting point Greimas’s last work (De l’imperfection), taken into very little consideration by later semiotic research, I would like to see whether it would be possible to make, in the field of taste, the distinction that Greimas did in the visual field: between a “figurative” taste (that I should call tasty) and a “plastic” taste (that I should call flavorful). Much has been discussed about the synesthetic nature of gustatory sensoriality. But very little has been said about links and differences between an intellectualistic taste perception (i. e., recognition of figures of food through semantic grids) and a taste perception of a pure aesthetic nature, supported by the former and producing further significations that cannot be reproduced through language words. How does an aesthetic grasp of taste work, if it works at all? In order to answer this question I will briefly analyze different kinds of texts.

Abstract:
The decolonization of the social imaginary has been proposed as an important dimension of the transition towards a degrowth society. However, although omnipresent in the degrowth literature, the terms “social imaginary” and “social imaginary significations” have not been adequately explained. This creates a level of mystification that limits the analytical value of the degrowth framework. In addition, there is very little theoretical work on how actual social imaginaries can be decolonized and transformed. This paper first tries to clarify those concepts. Subsequently, it develops a theoretical framework for explaining such transitions of the imaginary. In developing this framework, the paper focuses on moments of crisis, since crises have been historically associated with change and transition. It argues that crises are important because they destabilize social imaginaries and open up a stage of suspension—a liminal stage—in which the rise of new social practices can facilitate the emergence of new social imaginary significations and institutions that can contribute to the alteration of the social imaginary at large. The paper draws on case studies related to the Greek crisis, the biggest ever faced by a country of the Global North after the Second World War.

Abstract:
This research is part of the field of social psychology of work and organizations which is interested in professional socialization and psychosocial transition among female workers. The first part presents the socio-economic context that underlies and signifies the living conditions of new working mothers and the evolution of maternity rights in Vietnam. The 2nd part, summarizes the theories which make it possible to base the model of analysis of the research, which interprets the conduct of return to work as a process of professional / organizational (re)socialization and psychosocial transition. The 3rd part presents our main methodological tools: the interview and the Alceste analysis. In the 4th part, we expose the results of our research and their analysis. From a corpus of life stories of 36 Vietnamese women in the process of maternity, the discursive analysis by Alceste distinguishes four salient themes. The first (47.23% of the statements) relates to women's previous and current work activities in their institutional, organizational and legal contexts. The 2nd theme (i.e. 9.97%) presents the baby's choice of food and the mode of breastfeeding after returning to work. The sources of family support and the feelings of women during thematernity period are brought together in the 3rd theme (i.e. 30.38%). The 4th theme (14.42%) concerns methods of baby care and maternal care. Then, the tri-cross analyzes distinguish the types of return to work behaviors of working mothers according to the characteristics of the subjects, especially the regional characteristic and the status of their organization. Four case studies are presented to illustrate and clarify the procedures for returning to work. The last part is devoted to a theoretical discussion of our results and to a general conclusion with regard to the proposed analysis model

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the process of meaning transformation in digital participatory culture by examining the replication, mutation and circulation that iconic news images undergo in cyberspace through Internet memes. With triangulation of visual historical analysis, visual rhetorical analysis and iconographic tracking, the project argues that members of remix culture weaponize the digital derivatives of the famous images through manipulation to renegotiate history, dispense social justice in the absence of other recourse and engage in political activism. Such transformations, as this project shows, are likely to weaken the rhetorical powers of iconic images to define collective memory, a role they have played for decades. With the use of Internet memes, members of the public can now re-remember history outside the iconic accounts, producing their own interpretations of events that contribute to public discourse. Internet memes that exist alongside their iconic visual counterparts democratize the process of meaning making and remembering in remix culture, promoting polyvocality in favor of singular versions of the past. Such fragmentation of master narratives highlights the changing role of iconic pictures in the process of signification thanks to technology. Keywords: Iconic images, Internet memes, signification, digital participatory culture, collective memory.

Abstract:
Francis Ponge’s writing style is essentially based on repetition: the publication of his manuscripts revealed a vast network of contrapuntal variations which generate the consequent textual developments departing from a single matricial idea: called theme or programme symmetrical pairs of words ideally reflect the overall structural symmetry. Using the functional concept of the found object as it appears in André Boucourechliev’s aesthetic thought, this study attempts to define the pongian intertext through a multilayered range of trans-semiotic fusions between music and verbal language: thus emerge a rich dialectical approach built around the graphic partition, the spatialization in boulezian sound environment, the peircean series of interpretants, the open work and the phenomenological reduction, as interactive notions in the creative process of pongian rewritings. The dialogue established reforms the meaning of signification and rethinks the fundamental strategies of interpretation

Abstract:
This work falls within the general framework of developing a working methodology for processing lexical meaning within a text. It seeks to apply François Rastier’s theory of interpretive semantics to Arabic texts and utterances. The thesis starts with a survey of the state of the text in both traditional Arabic thinking and modern linguistics. Such a survey reveals the key factors that have brought the textual level to the fore, in modern linguistics on the one hand, and Arabic traditional grammar, rhetoric and exegetics on the other hand. This study seeks to apply Rastier’s notion of interpretive semantics to texts and examples in Arabic. The overall objective of this close textual approach is to highlight the fundamental role of semantic analysis, semantic isotopy, context and the current social practices in assigning lexical meaning. The thesis attempts also to show the shortcomings of textual models offered by two semantic approaches, namely the formal (truth-conditional) and the cognitive approaches; in order to highlight the pertinence of Rastier’s model within a structural semantic approach to Arabic texts

Abstract:
This research is in the field of social psychology of work and organizations. It is interested in behavior organizational socialization of graduated Vietnamese young women. Adopting a systemic and constructivist approach, we think each person at work is « an active subject because plural and prospective » in his process of socialization and personalization. In an exploring view, we try to show that the socialization behaviours of young Vietnamese graduated are not only determined by their socio-biographical characteristics and their organizational contexts but also oriented by their psychological activity of meaning of work. After an exploratory investigation by interview, an extensive survey with questionnaire allowed us to inquire 435 young women graduates, from Master of Arts level, in a multiplicity of work spheres. First, the analysis of the results, allows establishing a typology of young Vietnamese graduates. The socio-biographical characteristics of the 4 classes are in significant relationships with the various behaviours of organizational socialization. When analyzing those first results, it seems that socio-economic and cultural context in the transition of labour and employment in Vietnam, stay a « collective determinant » for individual behaviours of workers. In addition, the results show the importance of axiological processes which are involved in the activities of our subjects, including the influence of the meaning of work, on the evaluation process by the subjects of the effects of their work activity. Over the contribution to describe the working behaviours of young graduates Vietnamese, these results provide recommendations both at a theoretical and at a practical level. At the theoretical level, they invited to enrich the notion of « plural subject » in the same professional sphere as literature doesn’t approach yet. Practically, they lead to propose training and professional guidance to make easier the professional insertion of young Vietnamese women and men

Abstract:
In Cinema's Baroque Flesh, Saige Walton draws on the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty to argue for a distinct aesthetic category of film and a unique cinema of the senses: baroque cinema. Combining media archaeological work with art history, phenomenology, and film studies, the book offers close analyses of a range of historic baroque artworks and films, including Caché, Strange Days, the films of Buster Keaton, and many more. Walton pursues previously unexplored connections between film, the baroque, and the body, opening up new avenues of embodied film theory that can make room for structure, signification, and thought, as well as the aesthetics of sensation.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article analyzes the ways in which ‘Alī al-Sharafī of Sfax, an atlas author of the sixteenth century, adapted excerpts from the work of the twelfth-century geographer Muḥammad al-Idrīsī as well as features of medieval European portolan charts. The article pursues a translation studies approach. It argues that, through the adaptation of both textual and graphic elements from Idrīsī’s work and the incorporation of other graphic and cartographic elements, al-Sharafī was in fact engaging in a practice of cultural translation which resulted in a unique and innovative textual and cartographic oeuvre. As such, al-Sharafī should be regarded not simply as a passive copyist of textual and cartographic elements, but indeed as an author who engaged in the creative re-signification of the traditions and practices that informed his work.

Abstract:
Comparing a Tintin episode, "The Broken Ear, "with Julie Doucet’s "A Day in Julie Doucet’s Life, "this essay analyze show Doucet's story telling provides a countering perspective to the hyper-masculine, action-motivated crime narratives from the Tint in comics series. In contrast to Hergé’s attention to public space and deliberate objects, Doucet’s visual work explores the home, privacy, disorder, and female boredom. Her text highlights the unintelligible and its gendered significations, offering an example of what a "boring" story can expose. Considering the varying serialities of Hergé's and Doucet’s works, this chapter considers the potential for gendered domains of waiting, in coherence, and the everyday ordinary.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Baker’s two feature-length silent films, La Revue des revues and La Sirène des tropiques (both 1927). It shows how their staging of Baker’s dancing body plays into early-twentieth-century colonial and primitivist fantasies but simultaneously allows the star to showcase a self-referential performance style with origins in Black vaudeville. The chapter also juxtaposes Baker’s work with the regimented routines of white chorus girls and traces her film stardom’s impact on 1920s African American audiences. The coexistence of competing significations in these films underscores the fundamental ambiguity of Baker’s performances, which allow for readings of both subjugation and contestation.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the play with genre in Kelly Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff (2010), a film which troubles the relationship between many familiar signifiers of the western genre—including its mute characters—and their customary significations. The film does not simply rearrange meanings; binary Manichaeism is not replaced by an alternative ethical system, female characters do not become active narrative drivers, and the Native American character does not become heroic. Instead, meaning is complicated, as inarticulate silence disrupts the settlers’ sense of identity and the Native American becomes an inscrutable signifier for both salvation and destruction. This chapter argues that genre is used as a critical (rather than textual) apparatus for marshalling films into pre-arranged significance that relies on the seamless operation of genre signifiers. Meek’s Cutoff makes visible the complications at work in all westerns, invites a reappraisal of these eccentric films, and critiques genre as an ideological knowledge system.

Abstract:
Arguing for the importance of vocal delivery in music analysis to better understand signification in popular music recordings, this chapter presents a conceptual model for analysis, places vocal elements along a continuum of dimensionality, and argues for the use of transcription and spectrographic analysis. It provides an overview of various disciplinary understandings of voice, ranging from the sonic materiality of sound, literal phonological and linguistic approaches, to more abstract philosophical and literary approaches. Finally, complexities to understanding the signification of voice, while vexing, also compel a systematic investigation of the ways in which we understand voices, and the elements that contribute to the richness of vocal signification.

Abstract:
Each and every thought, word, feeling or action of a person harbor a richness of meaning, opening on all the possible worlds accessible for him/her. A vision on those possible worlds, those open possibilities of action, should be of great interest for human science research. We believe that the phenomenological thinking of Edmund Husserl, reworked to adapt to the modern conception of the human sciences, can allow such an understanding of a person or a more or less large group, giving not a static picture of his mind, but a dynamic view of the ongoing process of constitution of meaning. In cross-cultural and/or intercultural comparative fields as well as developmental and educational fields, the researcher is confronted to language, in conversations, narratives, writings and texts studied, to understand the relations of individuals to their cultures. Collecting freely expressed narratives and texts, the researcher accesses the whole universe of the subject in all its richness, individual specificity and cultural and social characteristics. Hence the question of the meaning and interpretation of the narratives to be done by a lecture in intension to reconstruct the possible worlds of the subject by phenomenological analysis. MCA, “Meaning Constitution Analysis”, explores the pluralities of the significations lying in the texts and implied by it. Software, MCA – Minerva, has been developed as an efficient tool in the work of text analysis. By MCA-method any kind of text can be analyzed in a rigorous and controlled way. By allowing also for different statistical treatment of the results of the process of analysis, it might render obsolete the now almost classical distinction between qualitative and quantitative methods.

Abstract:
This paper explores the way that professional women working in the IT industry discuss the nature of their wDrk. Previous work suggested that the way women talk about their work reinforces widely held impressions of the Information Technology industry (Nielsen, von Hellens, Beekhuyzen and Trauth 2003). In this paper Structuration Theory illuminates how this talk is characterised by dualisms which are not always consistent with the womens' lived experiences. The interview data reveals contradictions in these dualisms, indicating that these polarised views of women and IT work are being undermined by women in the IT industry. The perceptions of the interviewees are discussed as structures of signification that need to be altered in order to successfully challenge these dualisms. This paper suggests that mentoring, interactions with professional IT organisations, and professional IT women talking to females in their IT education years can give new ideas to the perceptions of IT and thus challenge these dualisms. It is suggested that exposing females in their IT education years to the professional IT women who are challenging these dualisms is an essential part of transforming these structures of signification. This research is part of an ongoing project (WinIT) commenced in 1995, which seeks to understand the declining female participation in IT education and work. In order to have a better understanding of the way women help configure the institutional realm of IT work, we propose that more qualitative studies of women at work in IT as well as women talking about IT are needed.

Abstract:
The present research has as its theme the Kaingang indigenous handicrafts in contemporary times, evidencing how the meaning and resignification of cultural elements occurs in processes involving trade for income generation and survival. The work presents a brief history of the Kaingang indigenous cultural universe with a focus on handicrafts, in order to understand its original context of production, including the materials commonly used, as well as the representation of symbolic elements. It records the perception of an indigenous Kaingang in the process of signification and resignification of the symbolic elements that make up the handicrafts sold in the streets of Chapecó and region, in the state of Santa Catarina, and, in this sense, exposes the apprehensions of a non-indigenous visual artist about the relations between art and indigenous crafts in processes of cultural resignification.

Abstract:
The activities we present, within the framework of a school project aimed at fourth grade students (children 9 and 10 years old), seek to encourage students to work on concepts related to random or uncertain situations such as: possible event and impossible event. These activities are significant for students because the context of the random situation used is a school walk, away from the typical gambling contexts, and given its experiential character. Among the results we found that the students were able to internalize the concepts taught and achieved the objectives proposed by the teacher.

Abstract:
Collections, according to Michel Foucault, are places where we juxtapose ourselves, and all these juxtapositions, classifications, and catalogs provide a way of connecting things both visually and in discourse. The collection and preservation of documents produced in architectural practice have sparked an interest in the notion of the archive within Architecture Schools. From this perspective, the Elements collection, as a teaching and communication experience, has entailed the construction of a documentary archive through the work of cataloging, organization, and formatting of the work carried out in the classroom. It serves as a visual and relational tool connecting various concepts addressed in the teaching unit with the documents developed during the learning and comprehension process. The editorial experience is essential for enhancing the «fragment» and its re-signification through critical thinking and a focused approach making this instance a learning opportunity for future publications.

Abstract:
The concept of urbanity is difficult but essential for studying the contemporary urban world, analyzing spaces that structure socially and functionally the city. Based on a rationalist urbanism, metropolitan expansion models increased the limits of the traditional city and transformed the idea of urbanity. This work aims to approximate to a comprehension of this term and understand how processes of contemporary metropolis, identified in the city of São Paulo, affected some of its most significant public spaces of interaction. Understanding the importance of this apparently ambiguous expression, the aim is to think about the action spaces of public life in our cities of tomorrow.

Abstract:
The touristization of Lagos, Portugal, has brought the well-known processes of economic transformation, gentrification, loss of local population and abandonment of touristically "invisible" areas. In collaboration with the City Council, the CCDR and SAAL of Algarve, we developed a research project to try to reverse this situation. Part of the project was undertaken through Learning and Service activities aimed at identifying and analyzing these morphological and socially invisible areas to develop proposals for their redefinition and integration. The work was carried out in the courses Architecture In Situ and Project Laboratory VI of the Integrated Master in Architecture, University of Lisbon. Two Spanish professors collaborated in the experience by introducing intangible indicators in the analysis: perceptual, social, gender. The most interesting projects were developed as TFM. The results presented to the local authorities will serve, as a consultancy, to implement plans for the re-signification of the now invisible places.

Abstract:
Concurrently with the advent of new technologies, the content and typology of language courses have changed. The borders between the courses we propose to our students have become more permeable in view of the society demands, educational needs and institutional constraints. In a francophone country such as Romania, where there are French streams receiving students who have French as their mother tongue, or as a second or foreign language, having relatively heterogeneous linguistic and cultural backgrounds, the French for Specific Purposes (FSP -FOS) modules also comprise components of French for Academic Purposes (FAP -FOU) and of French for Professional Communication (FPC -FLP). On the other hand, for future engineers who are very open to new technologies, the use of the digital technology in a mixed FOS-FOU (FSP-FAP) module can contribute to a better acquisition of specific knowledge as well as the development of know-how essential to successful communication and action of the future social actor. I will therefore aim to present digital technologies integration in the language for specific purposes course in the particular context of Bucharest POLITEHNICA University. Starting from a type of course that is not a classical FSP (FOS) one, in Mangiante et Papette’s signification, having one specific objective only, but a mixed type one, I will analyze the pedagogical efficiency of the text treatment software and smart phone use in class. The analysis will be carried out on the following types of activities: information search, language work with a stress on the terminological-lexical and/or intercultural components, as well as on the types of documents that allow digital means of exploitation. I will also approach the role of digital technologies integration from a cognitive perspective, as well as from a didactic and/or intercultural one.

Abstract:
The new approach proposed for the teaching of Descriptive Geometry contemplates not only the use of examples of very significant built or projected architectures, in theory or practical exercises, but also the application of an active methodology, based on learning by projects, through the realization of a monographic work. This allows students to achieve the objectives and competencies of the subject, being the protagonist of their own learning, by solving a set of tasks that involve research, analysis and execution processes, which must be carried out in an autonomous and planned way, guided by the teacher. The architectural references selected for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 academic years were three monument fountains by Aldo Rossi, chosen for their geometric shapes, scale and composition, as well as for their semantic component, destined for collective memory. We managed to increase the motivation of the students and break the abstraction of the subject.
