Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay reviews The Cult of Statistical Significance: How the Standard Error Costs Us Jobs, Justice, and Lives, by Stephen T. Ziliak and Deirdre N. McCloskey. The book's core message is that statistical significance should not be equated with substantive significance and that empirical researchers should convey more information about the magnitude of relationships and effects than many now do. This essay summarizes, approves of, and elaborates on Ziliak and McCloskey's message with special attention to concerns of the legal academy. It clarifies appropriate uses of significance tests within the research framework of controlling for plausible rival hypotheses.

Abstract:
This article discusses theoretical significance of linguistics. The initial stage of linguistics is an introduction to linguistics, and it studies the place of language in other phenomena, its structure, and the basic concepts of language science in general. Therefore, this course lays the groundwork for studying and mastering specific language phenomena, vocabulary, phonetic system, grammatical structure on a scientific basis.

Abstract:
To the Editor.— In what is probably the best-controlled study ever published on the controversial question of the effect of stressful life events in a family on childhood illness, Beautrais et al1 have demonstrated unequivocally that those events correlate positively with childhood morbidity. The authors, however, grossly overinterpret the clinical importance of the results of their study. They state, for example, that "...the net effect of life events on child health was large ..." and that "... children from families experiencing 12 or more life events had ...six times the risk of hospital admission compared with children from families with three or fewer life events."

Abstract:
In Reply.— Hersher's letter resurrects an old controversy about methods of assessing the size of effect in epidemiologic research. The basis of this conflict is implicit in the figures he quotes: on the one hand high exposure to adverse life events was associated with a sixfold increase in risks of hospital admission, whereas on the other hand, the life events measure explained only 3% of the variance in hospital admission. The former statistic suggests an association of importance, whereas the amount of explained variance is disappointingly small.

Abstract:
A broad review is given of the role of statistical significance tests in the analysis of empirical data. Four main types of application are outlined. The first, conceptually quite different from the others, concerns decision making in such contexts as medical screening and industrial inspection. The others assess the security of conclusions. The article concludes with an outline discussion of some more specialized points.
