Abstract:
We study the problem of communicating a discrete time analog source over a channel such that the resulting distortion is minimized. For ergodic channels, Shannon showed that separate source and channel coding is optimal. In this work we study this problem for non-ergodic channels. Although not much can be said about the general problem of transmitting any analog sources over any non-ergodic channels with any distortion metric, for many practical problems like video broadcast and voice transmission, we can gain insights by studying the transmission of a Gaussian source over a wireless channel with mean square error as the distortion measure. Motivated by different applications, we consider three different non-ergodic channel models - (1) Additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel whose signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is unknown at the transmitter; (2) Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output MIMO channel whose SNR is known at the transmitter; and (3) Rayleigh fading MIMO channel whose SNR is unknown at the transmitter. The traditional approach to study these problems has been to fix certain SNRs of interest and study the corresponding achievable distortion regions. However, the problems formulated this way have not been solved even for simple setups like 2 SNRs for the AWGN channel. We are interested in performance over a wide range of SNR and hence we use the distortion SNR exponent metric to study this problem. Distortion SNR exponent is defined as the rate of decay of distortion with SNR in the high SNR limit. We study several layered transmissions schemes where the source is first compressed in layers and then the layers are transmitted using channel codes that provide variable error protection. Results show that in several cases such layered transmission schemes are optimal in terms of the distortion SNR exponent. Specifically, if the band- width expansion (number of channel uses per source sample) is b, we show that the optimal distortion SNR exponent for the AWGN channel is b and it is achievable using a superposition based layered scheme. For the L-block Rayleigh fading M x N MIMO channel the optimal exponent is characterized for b < (|N - M|+1)= min(M;N) and b > MNL2. This corresponds to the entire range of b when min(M;N) = 1 and L = 1. The results also show that the exponents obtained using layered schemes which are a small subclass of joint source channel coding (JSCC) schemes are, surprisingly, as good as and better in some cases than achievable exponent of all other JSCC schemes reported so far.

System performance can be ascertained via a number of parameters; one of which is Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR). SNR is the ratio of the value of the signal to the value of the noise. It is generally expressed in decibels and usually a function of the system bandwidth. Another measure of performance is the Noise-Power ratio (NPR). NPR is the ratio of the noise level within a specific measurement channel when noise is applied to all channels, to the level that is measured within the specific channel with noise applied to all of the channels but not the specific channel.

Abstract:
Fifteen nonsmoking and fifteen smoking females 19 to 36 years of age were evaluated on measures of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), jitter, shimmer, and speaking fundamental frequency (F0). The results indicated that: 1) there is a significant difference between female smokers and nonsmokers on measures of SNR, mean, and maximum F0 and, 2) there is no significant difference between female smokers and nonsmokers on measures of jitter, shimmer and minimum F0 . The SNR was found to be a powerful tool which is capable of distinguishing subtle vocal characteristics between the subject groups. It would appear that cigarette smoking may have an impact on the voice before distinct laryngeal pathologies are present.

Full text
Abstract:

In system identification, different methods are often classified as parametric or non-parametric methods. For parametric methods, a parametric model of a system is considered and the model parameters are estimated. For non-parametric methods, no parametric model is used and the result of the identification is given as a curve or a function.

One of the non-parametric methods is the impulse response analysis. This approach is dynamic simulation. This thesis introduces a new paradigm for dynamic simulation, called impulse-based simulation. This approach is based on choosing a Dirac function as input, and as a result, the output will be equal to the impulse response. However, a Dirac function cannot be realized in practice, and an approximation has to be used. As a consequence, the output will deviate from the impulse response. Once the impulse response is estimated, a parametric model can be fitted to the estimation.

This thesis aims to determine the parameters in a parametric model from an estimated impulse response. The process of investigating the models is a critical aspect of the project. Correlation analysis is used to obtain the weighting function from the estimates of covariance functions.

Later, a relation formed between the parameters and the estimates (obtained by correlation analysis) in the form of a linear system of equations. Furthermore, simulations are carried out using Monte Carlo for investigating the properties of the two step approach, which involves in correlation analysis to find h-parameters and least squares and total least squares methods to solve for the parameters of the model. In order to evaluate the complete capability of the approach to the noise variation a study of signal to noise ratio and mean, mean square error and variances of the estimated parameters is carried out.

The results of the Monte Carlo study indicate that two-step approach can give rather accurate parameter estimates. In addition, the least squares and total least squares methods give similar results.

Abstract:
The use of Computerised microtomography (CμT) in biomedical research is well established, with most applications developed at synchrotron facilities. The possibility to non-invasively monitor morphological changes in biological samples, makes it an attractive technique in biomedicine. However, high absorbed doses and long examination times are a disadvantage that limits the possibilities of performing longitudinal examinations. The aim of this work was to optimise CmT using conventional X-ray tubes for applications in non-destructive material testing and for skeleton research in small animals (rat). A calculational model of the imaging system was developed and used to optimise the relation between image quality, expressed as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in detecting a contrasting detail, and imaging time in material testing. The model was modified to optimise the relation between the SNR in detecting a trabecular detail in cancelleous bone and the mean absorbed dose in spongiosa and skin for (rat) tibia and femur. Gastrectomized Sprague-Dawley rats were used to initiate osteoporotic changes. In order to detect differences in between gastrectomized rats and controls, spatial resolutions of 150 mm or better were needed. The minimum absorbed doses in femur spongiosa at SNR = 5 were 1mGy - 700 mGy at spatial resolutions from 100 mm to10 mm. In femur skin, the corresponding minimum absorbed doses were 2 mGy - 2000 mGy. Corresponding values for tibia were 0.3 mGy - 300 mGy for both spongiosa and skin (spatial resolution of 100 mm to10 mm). Taking 0.5 Gy as the tolerance limit for the spongiosa dose, longitudinal studies with six repeated examinations will be possible at a spatial resolution of 25 mm in femur and 17 examinations in tibia.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose: To compare the frequency specific Cortical Auditory Evoked Potential (CAEP) and the chirp-evoked 40 Hz Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) with equivalent residual noise levels for behavioural threshold prediction in adults with normal hearing and with SNHL. Method: The study tested 23 adults with normal hearing and 20 adults with SNHL. The participants were aged between 18–65 years. A repeated measures within- participant descriptive design was used to collect the quantitative data. The participants underwent behavioural pure tone, CAEP and ASSR testing on the same day. Results: Similar CAEP difference scores across frequencies for the participants with normal hearing (mean=12.32-14.40 dB) and with SNHL (mean=10.00-16.47 dB) were measured. However, for the ASSR difference scores across frequencies slightly smaller difference scores were measured for the participants with SNHL (mean=10.17-17.30 dB) than for the participants with normal hearing (mean=11.74- 17.14 dB). CAEP thresholds were significantly closer to the behavioural pure tone thresholds at 500 (p=0.028; mean absolute difference 14.40 dB) and 2000 (p=0.016; mean absolute difference 12.56 dB) Hz for participants with normal hearing. In participants with sensorineural hearing loss, CAEP and ASSR thresholds were measured at similar sensation levels and were not statistically different (p>0.05). Conclusion: For the purpose of threshold estimation, representing the auditory function to the level of the auditory cortex the CAEP was closer to the behavioural hearing thresholds than the 40 Hz ASSR at all frequencies except at 4000 Hz, regardless of the hearing sensitivity. Keywords: Auditory steady state response (ASSR), Cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP), Auditory evoked potential (AEP), Residual noise, Signal to noise ratio (SNR), objective threshold estimation, awake adults.

Asif, Rameez. "Design and Implementation of System Components for Radio Frequency Based Asset Tracking Devices to Enhance Location Based Services. Thesis, University of Bradford, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17143.

Abstract:
The angle of arrival estimation of multiple sources plays a vital role in the field of array signal processing as MIMO systems can be employed at both the transmitter and the receiver end and the system capacity, reliability and throughput can be significantly increased by using array signal processing. Almost all applications require accurate direction of arrival (DOA) estimation to localize the sources of the signals. Another important parameter of localization systems is the array geometry and sensor design which can be application specific and is used to estimate the DOA. In this work, various array geometries and arrival estimation algorithms are studied and then a new scheme for multiple source estimation is proposed and evaluated based on the performance of subspace and non-subspace decomposition methods. The proposed scheme has shown to outperform the conventional Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) estimation and Bartlett estimation techniques. The new scheme has a better performance advantage at low and high signal to noise ratio values (SNRs). The research work also studies different array geometries for both single and multiple incident sources and proposes a geometry which is cost effective and efficient for 3, 4, and 5 antenna array elements. This research also considers the shape of the ground plane and its effects on the angle of arrival estimation and in addition it shows how the mutual couplings between the elements effect the overall estimation and how this error can be minimised by using a decoupling matrix. At the end, a novel miniaturised multi element reconfigurable antenna to represent the receiver base station is designed and tested. The antenna radiation patterns in the azimuth angle are almost omni-directional with linear polarisation. The antenna geometry is uniplanar printed logspiral with striplines feeding network and biased components to improve the impedance bandwidth. The antenna provides the benefit of small size, and re-configurability and is very well suited for the asset tracking applications.

This diploma thesis deals with pause identification with degraded speech signal. The speech characteristics and the conception of speech signal processing are described here. The work aim was to create the reliable recognizing method to establish speech and non-speech segments of speech signal with and without degraded speech signal. The five empty pause detectors were realized in computing environment MATLAB. There was the energetic detector in time domain, two-step detector in spectral domain, one-step integral detector, two-step integral detector and differential detector in cepstrum. The spectral detector makes use of energetic characteristics of speech signal in first step and statistic analysis in second step. Cepstral detectors make use of integral or differential algorithms. The detectors robustness was tested for different types of speech degradation and different values of Signal to Noise Ratio. The test of influence different speech degradation was conducted to compare non-speech detection for detectors by ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) Curves.

Abstract:
Water is an integral part of life on our planet and it plays an important role in climatic changes. Water resources research is, therefore, very important for the climate communities to not only closely monitor the regional and global water supply budget, but to also understand changes in frequency of occurrence and strength of individual weather events. This is especially true for extreme weather events, which have great societal and economic impacts. Whether we will have more or more intense tropical storms, mega-snow events, or dust-bowls in the near or far future climate. This is one of the key focus areas of climate research. The aim of my PhD work is to provide some answers to assess the impact of future climate change threats on water resources. And we are trying to find the adaptive tools needed for sustainable water resources management. In an effort to optimize water resource management, it is crucial to improve soil moisture situation awareness. With the advent of remote sensing, soil moisture is systematically monitored at the global scale but at the expense of the temporal and/or spatial resolution. Recent studies suggested to take advantage of continuously emitted waves by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, to retrieve soil moisture. This opportunistic remote sensing technique, known as GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R), consists in comparing the interference of reflected waves by the ground and those which come directly from satellites. In my thesis, I focused on GNSS-R technique base on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) recorded by conventional GNSS receiver with single antenna to retrieve soil moisture variations. Previous studies show the efficiency of this methodology for clay soil and I demonstrate for the first time, it's efficiency for sandy soil using Unwrapping phase method. This method that I propose has been successfully applied to determine local soil moisture variations of : (1) 100% of sand in Volleyball playground (Toulouse, France); and (2) >85% of sand in the Sahelian critical zone of Dahra (Senegal). In addition, accurate and continuous measurement of river water levels is an important element in water resource management, to obtain an ongoing estimate of the river's flow around the world. The accuracy of GNSS-R technique for river altimetry is useful for detection of extreme hydrological events and to show the competition between continental and oceanic water near coastal area. The two methods, Least Square and "Larson" methods, has been successfully applied to determine local variations in Vietnam of: (1) the Red river (21°02'44.04"N, 105°51'48.86"E) to identify flood events and morphological changes associated to the hydrological events (tropical storm) in 2016; and (2) the Mekong river delta (9°31'38.63"N, 106°12'2.01"E) where continental water interacts with oceanic water. My work shows that GNSS-R is a powerful alternative and a significant complement to the current measurement techniques for managing water resource by establishing a link between the different temporal and spatial resolutions currently achieved by conventional tools (in-situ sensors, remote sensing radar, etc.). This technique has a great advantage based on already-developed and sustainable GNSS satellites networks and can be applied to any GNSS geodetic station. Therefore, by installing a processing chain of the SNR acquisitions, we are able to monitor various environmental parameters i.e. height river, local slope of water surface, flooded areas, soil moisture variations and even vegetation/plant height

Abstract:
My work focuses on the application of fUS (functional ultrasound) imaging to preclinical brain imaging in small animals. The goal of my thesis was to turn this recent vascular brain imaging technique into a quantifying tool for cerebral state. The main objectives were to demonstrate the feasibility of fUS imaging in the non-anaesthetized small rodents and to move from rat model imaging to mouse model imaging –most used model for preclinical studies in neuroscience-, while developing the least invasive imaging protocols. First, I have developed a new ultrafast ultrasonic imaging sequence (Multiplane Wave imaging), improving the image signal-to-noise ratio by virtually increasing emitted signal amplitude, without reducing the ultrafast framerate. Then, I have demonstrated the possibility to use ultrafast Doppler ultrasound imaging to image both the mouse brain and the young rat brain, non-invasively and through the intact skull, without surgery or contrast agents injection. Next, I have developed an experimental setup, an ultrasound sequence and an experimental protocol to perform minimally invasive fUS imaging in awake and freely-moving mice. Finally, I have demonstrated the possibility to use fUS imaging to study the functional connectivity of the brain in a resting state in awake or sedated mice, still in a transcranial and minimally invasive way. fUS imaging and the combination of "mouse model" + "minimally invasive" + "awake animal" + "functional connectivity" represent a very promising tool for the neuroscientist community working on pathological animal models or new pharmacological molecules

Abstract:
GNSS reflectometry (or GNSS-R) is an original and opportunistic remote sensing technique based on the analysis of the electromagnetic waves continuously emitted by GNSS positioning systems satellites (GPS, GLONASS, etc.) that are captured by an antenna after reflection on the Earth's surface. These signals interact with the reflective surface and hence contain information about its properties. When they reach the antenna, the reflected waves interfere with those coming directly from the satellites. This interference is particularly visible in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) parameter recorded by conventional GNSS stations. It is thus possible to reverse the SNR time series to estimate the reflective surface characteristics. If the feasibility and usefulness of thismethod are well established, the implementation of this technique poses a number of issues. Namely the spatio-temporal accuracies and resolutions that can be achieved and thus what geophysical observables are accessible. The aim of my PhD research work is to provide some answers on this point, focusing on the methodological development and geophysical exploitation of the SNR measurements performed by conventional GNSS stations. I focused on the estimation of variations in the antenna height relative to the reflecting surface (altimetry) and on the soil moisture in continental areas. The SNR data inversion method that I propose has been successfully applied to determine local variations of : (1) the sea level near the Cordouan lighthouse (not far from Bordeaux, France) from March 3 to May 31, 2013, where the main tidal periods and waves have been clearly identified ; and (2) the soil moisture in an agricultural plot near Toulouse, France, from February 5 to March 15, 2014. My method eliminates some restrictions imposed in earlier work, where the velocity of the vertical variation of the reflective surface was assumed to be negligible. Furthermore, I developed a simulator that allowed me to assess the influence of several parameters (troposphere, satellite elevation angle, antenna height, local relief, etc.) on the path of the reflected waves and hence on the position of the reflection points. My work shows that GNSS-R is a powerful alternative and a significant complement to the current measurement techniques, establishing a link between the different temporal and spatial resolutions currently achieved by conventional tools (sensors, radar, scatterometer, etc.). This technique offers the major advantage of being based on already-developed and sustainable satellites networks, and can be applied to any GNSS geodetic station, including permanent networks (e.g., the French RGP). Therefore, by installing a processing chain of these SNR acquisitions, data from hundreds of pre-existing stations could be used to make local altimetry measurements in coastal areas or to estimate soil moisture for inland antennas

Abstract:
A wide range of services and applications become possible when accurate position information for a radio terminal is available. These include: location-based services; navigation; safety and security applications. The commercial, industrial and military value of radio-location is such that considerable research effort has been directed towards developing related technologies, using satellite, cellular or local area network infrastructures or stand-alone equipment. This work studies and investigates two location techniques. The first one presents an implementation scheme for a wideband transmission and direction finding system using OFDM multi-carrier communications systems. This approach takes advantage of delay discrimination to improve angle-of-arrival estimation in a multipath channel with high levels of additive white Gaussian noise. A new methodology is interpreted over the multi carrier modulation scheme in which the simulation results of the estimated channel improves the performance of OFDM signal by mitigating the effect of frequency offset synchronization to give error-free data at the receiver, good angle of arrival accuracy and improved SNR performance. The full system simulation to explore optimum values such as channel estimation and AoA including the antenna array model and prove the operational performance of the OFDM system as implemented in MATLAB. The second technique proposes a low cost-effective method of tracking and monitoring objects (examples: patient, device, medicine, document) by employing passive radio frequency identification (RFID) systems. A multi-tag, (totalling fifty-six tags) with known ID values are attached to the whole patient’s body to achieve better tracking and monitoring precision and higher accuracy. Several tests with different positions and movements are implemented on six patients. The aim is to be able to track the patient if he/she is walking or sitting; therefore, the tests considered six possible movements for the patient including walking, standing, sitting, resting, laying on the floor and laying on the bed, these placements are important to monitor the status of the patient like if he collapsed and fall on the ground so that the help will be quick. The collected data from the RFID Reader in terms of Time Stamp, RSS, Tag ID, and a number of channels are processed using the MATLAB code.

Abstract:
Processing of broadband signals induced on an antenna array using a tapped delay line filter and a set of steering delays has two problems. Firstly one needs to manipulate large matrices to estimate the filter coefficients. Secondly the use of steering delays is not only cumbersome but implementation errors cause loss of system performance. This thesis looks at both of these problems and presents elegant solutions by developing and studying a design method referred to as the DFT method, which does not require steering delays and is computationally less demanding compared to existing methods. Specifically the thesis studies and compares the performance of a time domain element space beamformer using the proposed method and that using an existing method, and develops the DFT method when the processor is implemented in partitioned form. The study presented in the thesis shows that the processors using the DFT method are robust to look direction errors and require less computation than that using the existing method for comparable performance. The thesis further introduces a broadband beamformer design which does not require any steering delays between the sensors and the tapped delay line section as is presently the case. It has the capability of steering the array in an arbitrary direction with a specified frequency response in the look direction while canceling unwanted uncorrelated interferences. The thesis presents and compares the performance of a number of techniques to synthesize an antenna pattern of a broadband array. These techniques are designed to produce isolated point nulls as well as broad sector nulls and to eliminate the need for the steering delays. Two of the pattern synthesis techniques presented in the thesis allow optimization against unwanted interferences in unknown directions. The techniques allow formulation of a beamforming problem such that the processor is not only able to place nulls in specified directions but also able to cancel directional interferences in unknown directions along with a specified frequency response in the look direction over a band of interest. The thesis also presents a set of directional constraints such that one does not need steering delays and an array can be constrained in an arbitrary direction with a specified frequency response. The constraints presented in the thesis are simple to implement. Based on these constraints a pattern synthesis technique for broadband antenna array is also presented.

Abstract:
AIMS: This study investigated the perception of generic and disease-specific Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) for adults living with hearing impairment (HI) in Aotearoa/New Zealand (NZ). This study aimed to answer three questions: (1) What is the perception of HRQoL amongst adults with hearing impairment in NZ? (2) How do these perceptions compare to adults with HI living in other countries for which we have data? (3) What are the demographic and audiometric variables related to device ownership? METHOD: HRQoL, demographic, and audiometric information was collected from 126 adults in NZ. The following demographic information was collected: age, relationship length, hours worked per week, income, ancestry, sex, level of education, city size, and sexual orientation. The following audiologic information was also collected: ownership of hearing aids (HA), ownership of hearing assistance technology (HAT), better-ear pure-tone average (BEPTA), worse-ear pure-tone average (WEPTA), and signal-to-noise ratio loss (SNR loss). HRQoL information was collected using the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36; Ware & Sherbourne, 1992), and the Hearing Handicap Inventory (HHI) for both elderly (HHIE) and adults (HHIA; Ventry & Weinstein, 1982; Newman, Weinstein, Jacobson, & Hug, 1991). Variables discriminating HA and HAT owners from non-owners were also analysed. RESULTS: The relationship between demographic variables and HRQoL scores revealed that only age and income were significant. Audiometric variables had significant relationships with disease-specific HRQoL scores, as well as HA and HAT ownership. Finally, disease-specific HRQoL scores and all audiometric variables differentiated HA owners from non- owners, but demographic variables did not. Generic HRQoL scores and all audiometric variables differentiated HAT owners from non-owners. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the negative impacts of HI on HRQoL as reported overseas are also present in NZ, and that not only do audiometric variables including SNR loss are related to HRQoL, but HRQoL is a significant predictor for HA and HAT ownership. Further QoL research is warranted amongst the HI population in NZ to identify and understand any causal relationships present amongst these variables. Furthermore, HRQoL instruments and a test of speech understanding in noise have been shown to provide additional meaningful information, and therefore clinicians might consider including them during consultation.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The objective of this work is to nd a mathematical model that allow us to obtain the Signal-to-Noise plus Interference Ratio (SNIR), the One-Hop Bit Error Rate (BER) and the End-to-End Bit Error Rate for an Underwater Acoustic Network (UAN). Considering this, it was developed a model that includes the interference as an important impairment and for ALOHA MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol. In addition, it was necessary to obtain before several parameters from the network, such as, average distance of the hop, average distance between nodes, average distance to the central node, average number of hops and average deviation. With this model, it is also possible to nd the optimal value of frequency using an optimization function. It was made comparisons between the One-Hop BER and the End-to-End BER for various values of maximal deviation angle. This comparison shows when it is more adequate to either use one-hop or multi-hop. Finally, we compared numerical and Monte-Carlo simulation results, giving a rst validation to our model. These comparisons show a big similitude between the developed model and the Monte-Carlo simulation. In addition, it was possible to analyse the behaviour of the SNIR and BER by varying important parameters of the network, such as, transmission frequency, number of nodes and sphere radius among others. From the obtained results it was prove that the SNIR decreases with an increase from the number of nodes and the sphere radius, but increases with the transmission power. The End-to-End BER has an contrary behavior with the SNIR.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with optimal control techniques for systems related to quantum mechanics and nuclear magnetic resonance. The work presented in this memory is divided into four parts. In the first part, we focus on to the simultaneous optimal control of the Schrödinger time-dependent equations via a laser field that represents a control term and that is assumed to be submitted to a family of perturbations. This lead us to consider a multi-criteria optimization problem through the introduction of a set of cost functional to be minimized (in the sense of Pareto). In the second part, we study the mathematical framework of the periodic Bloch equation. The necessary first-order optimality conditions are derived. More precisely, we prove the existence of a periodic solution, as well as the existence of an optimum. In the third part, we present a new optimization algorithm for periodic dynamics. This algorithm is applied to the maxi- mization of SNR in NMR. The work here is more of an numerical and algorithmic nature. To our knowledge, this is the first quantum control algorithm to consider periodic dynamics in time. We have shown the efficiency of this method in the case of a homogeneous and inhomogeneous spin system. The last part presents the Shinnar-Le-Roux algorithm (SLR), which is an analytical optimization method. Numerical results were obtained by comparing this method with an iterative grape-type method introduced in previous chapters. The result of this comparison gives an advantage to the SLR algorithm

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the developments of wireless communication systems. The work generally consists of three parts: the first part is a discussion on general digital communication systems, the second part focuses on wireless channel modelling and fading mitigation techniques, and in the third part we discuss the possible application of advanced digital signal processing, especially time-frequency representation and blind source separation, to wireless communication systems. The first part considers general digital communication systems which will be incorporated in later parts. Today's wireless communication system is a subbranch of a general digital communication system that employs various techniques of A/D (Analog to Digital) conversion, source coding, error correction, coding, modulation, and synchronization, signal detection in noise, channel estimation, and equalization. We study and develop the digital communication algorithms to enhance the performance of wireless communication systems. In the Second Part we focus on wireless channel modelling and fading mitigation techniques. A modified Jakes' method is developed for Rayleigh fading channels. We investigate the level-crossing rate (LCR), the average duration of fades (ADF), the probability density function (PDF), the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the autocorrelation functions (ACF) of this model. The simulated results are verified against the analytical Clarke's channel model. We also construct frequency-selective geometrical-based hyperbolically distributed scatterers (GBHDS) for a macro-cell mobile environment with the proper statistical characteristics. The modified Clarke's model and the GBHDS model may be readily expanded to a MIMO channel model thus we study the MIMO fading channel, specifically we model the MIMO channel in the angular domain. A detailed analysis of Gauss-Markov approximation of the fading channel is also given. Two fading mitigation techniques are investigated: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and spatial diversity. In the Third Part, we devote ourselves to the exciting fields of Time-Frequency Analysis and Blind Source Separation and investigate the application of these powerful Digital Signal Processing (DSP) tools to improve the performance of wireless communication systems.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the problem of the instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation of sinusoidal signals. This topic plays significant role in signal processing and communications. Depending on the type of the signal, two major approaches are considered. For IF estimation of single-tone or digitally-modulated sinusoidal signals (like frequency shift keying signals) the approach of digital phase-locked loops (DPLLs) is considered, and this is Part-I of this thesis. For FM signals the approach of time-frequency analysis is considered, and this is Part-II of the thesis. In part-I we have utilized sinusoidal DPLLs with non-uniform sampling scheme as this type is widely used in communication systems. The digital tanlock loop (DTL) has introduced significant advantages over other existing DPLLs. In the last 10 years many efforts have been made to improve DTL performance. However, this loop and all of its modifications utilizes Hilbert transformer (HT) to produce a signal-independent 90-degree phase-shifted version of the input signal. Hilbert transformer can be realized approximately using a finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter. This realization introduces further complexity in the loop in addition to approximations and frequency limitations on the input signal. We have tried to avoid practical difficulties associated with the conventional tanlock scheme while keeping its advantages. A time-delay is utilized in the tanlock scheme of DTL to produce a signal-dependent phase shift. This gave rise to the time-delay digital tanlock loop (TDTL). Fixed point theorems are used to analyze the behavior of the new loop. As such TDTL combines the two major approaches in DPLLs: the non-linear approach of sinusoidal DPLL based on fixed point analysis, and the linear tanlock approach based on the arctan phase detection. TDTL preserves the main advantages of the DTL despite its reduced structure. An application of TDTL in FSK demodulation is also considered. This idea of replacing HT by a time-delay may be of interest in other signal processing systems. Hence we have analyzed and compared the behaviors of the HT and the time-delay in the presence of additive Gaussian noise. Based on the above analysis, the behavior of the first and second-order TDTLs has been analyzed in additive Gaussian noise. Since DPLLs need time for locking, they are normally not efficient in tracking the continuously changing frequencies of non-stationary signals, i.e. signals with time-varying spectra. Nonstationary signals are of importance in synthetic and real life applications. An example is the frequency-modulated (FM) signals widely used in communication systems. Part-II of this thesis is dedicated for the IF estimation of non-stationary signals. For such signals the classical spectral techniques break down, due to the time-varying nature of their spectra, and more advanced techniques should be utilized. For the purpose of instantaneous frequency estimation of non-stationary signals there are two major approaches: parametric and non-parametric. We chose the non-parametric approach which is based on time-frequency analysis. This approach is computationally less expensive and more effective in dealing with multicomponent signals, which are the main aim of this part of the thesis. A time-frequency distribution (TFD) of a signal is a two-dimensional transformation of the signal to the time-frequency domain. Multicomponent signals can be identified by multiple energy peaks in the time-frequency domain. Many real life and synthetic signals are of multicomponent nature and there is little in the literature concerning IF estimation of such signals. This is why we have concentrated on multicomponent signals in Part-H. An adaptive algorithm for IF estimation using the quadratic time-frequency distributions has been analyzed. A class of time-frequency distributions that are more suitable for this purpose has been proposed. The kernels of this class are time-only or one-dimensional, rather than the time-lag (two-dimensional) kernels. Hence this class has been named as the T -class. If the parameters of these TFDs are properly chosen, they are more efficient than the existing fixed-kernel TFDs in terms of resolution (energy concentration around the IF) and artifacts reduction. The T-distributions has been used in the IF adaptive algorithm and proved to be efficient in tracking rapidly changing frequencies. They also enables direct amplitude estimation for the components of a multicomponent

Abstract:
Much of the current research in magnetic resonance engineering focuses on reducing the acquisition time for obtaining an image while simultaneously maximizing the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) of the image. It is known that improvement in imaging time or resolution is obtained at the cost of SNR. Therefore wherever possible, RF coil engineers design the coil in such a manner so as to maximize SNR for that coil design. In one such design consideration, most coil designers prefer placing low impedance preamplifiers near the coil. The further the pre-amplifiers are from the coil, the greater will be the signal loss due to transmission and higher will be its input impedance as perceived at the coil which would degrade inter-coil isolation. Owing to the current trend of using increasing number of receiver channels (32, 64 or 128) for parallel imaging, placing the preamplifiers near the coil would greatly complicate the coil construction. The primary objective of this research was to find the relation between SNR and referred preamp impedance and whether preamps need to be placed on the coil, or if they can be placed outside the magnet at the end of a transmission line which would simplify the construction of large count array. In addition, SNR was studied as a function of coil design parameters - coil loading, array coil separation, and system frequency. Both theoretical and experimental methods were used to undertake this investigation. A popular electromagnetic modeling technique, finite difference time domain (FDTD), was used to model SNR in arrays of two 3 inch loop coils at 3T and 1.5T. Results were also verified through bench measurement at 3T and 1.5T and by evaluating SNR. To verify the robustness of our results and to assess the possibility of using low cost standard 50 ohm preamps, we carried out additional bench measurements at 4.7T. Results demonstrated that preamplifier placement is critical at low field strength. At higher field strength, SNR degradation due to preamplifier placement was less owing to heavier coil loading.

A proposed method for cancelling or reducing the effect of the transmitted power within the transceiver MIMO unit is investigated and discussed using a feedback signal process between the elements. Several parameters including the level of feedback power mismatch, the transmitted power and the received power are considered in this work to test the performance of the system in term of the bit error rate (BER) versus signal to noise ratio (SNR). A new software programme using MATLAB is implemented to evaluate the proposed method. The results showed that the performances of the system are heavily dependent on the amount of the transmitted power, the received power, and the mismatch in the feedback component.

Abstract:
High signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is typically required for higher resolution and faster speed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Planar microcoils as receiver probes in MRI systems offer the potential to be configured into array elements for fast imaging as well as to enable the imaging of extremely small objects. Microcoils, however, are thermal noise dominant and suffer limited SNR. Cryo-cooling for the microcoils can reduce the thermal noise, however conventional cryostats are not optimum for the microcoils because they typically use a thick vacuum gap to keep samples to be imaged to near room temperature during cryo-cooling. This vacuum gap is typically larger than the most sensitive region of the microcoils that defines the imaging depth, which is approximately the same as the diameters of the microcoils. Here microfluidic technology is utilized to locally cryo-cool the microcoils and minimize the thermal isolation gap so that the imaging surface is within the imaging depth of the microcoils. The first system consists of a planar microcoil with microfluidically cryo-cooling channels, a thin N2 gap and an imaging. The microcoil was locally cryo-cooled while maintaining the sample above 8°C. MR images using a 4.7 Tesla MRI system shows an average SNR enhancement of 1.47 fold. Second, the system has been further developed into a cryo-cooled microcoil system with inductive coupling to cryo-cool both the microcoil and the on-chip microfabricated resonating capacitor to further improve the Q improvement. Here inductive coupling was used to eliminate the physical connection between the microcoil and the tuning network so that a single cryocooling microfluidic channel could enclose both the microcoil and the capacitor with minimum loss in cooling capacity. Q improvement was 2.6 fold compared to a conventional microcoil with high-Q varactors and transmission line connection. Microfluidically tunable capacitors with the 653% tunability and Q of 1.3 fold higher compared to a conventional varactor have been developed and demonstrated as matching/tuning networks as a proof of concept. These developed microfluidically cryo-cooling system and tunable capacitors for improving SNR will potentially allow MR microcoils to have high-resolution images over small samples.

"Dual energy mammography : X-ray spectra optimization using lanthanide and non filters." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10889/6301.

Abstract:
Breast cancer screening and diagnosis in X-ray mammography rely on the detection and visualization of microcalcifications (μCs) and soft tissue masses. The early detection of breast cancer has been shown to decrease breast cancer mortality. The μCs are composed mainly of calcium with attenuation coefficients greater than that of soft tissue. The detection and visualization of μCs are relatively easy over a uniform tissue background, but limited by the ‘‘clutter’’ due to overlapping tissue background present on the mammogram. The clutter in tissue background arises from the structures of glandular tissue, vessels, and soft tissue masses in the breast. However, depending upon their size and location, the visualization of calcifications in mammograms may be limited by the superimposed anatomical structures even when the calcifications have adequate contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Dual-energy subtraction imaging techniques offer an alternative approach to the detection and visualization of μCs. With this technique, high- and low-energy images are separately acquired and ‘‘subtracted’’ from each other in a weighted fashion to cancel out the cluttered tissue structure so as to decrease the obscurity from overlapping tissue structures. In this study, computer simulations were developed in order to compute SNR as a function of various imaging parameters (X-ray spectra, μC size, breast thickness, and total exposure- 2 different cases) in Dual Energy Calcification images. Emphasis was placed on the monochromatization of the X-ray spectra with the use of K-edge filtering technique. Also, simulations provided values for various quality parameters of the spectra. Optimization was based on maximization of SNRtc while reducing total entrance exposure of the breast or Coefficient of Variation of the incident photons (CVIinc).

"Radiological imaging of neonates : radiation dose and image quality." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10889/5508.

Full text
Abstract:
During hospitalisation in the SCBU premature neonates may undergo a significant number of radiographic procedures to assist mainly in the diagnosis and management of lung diseases, which represent one of the most life threatening conditions in the newborn. Additionally, repeated radiographs are required to confirm correct positioning of tubes and catheters inserted during the course of their management. Special attention should be paid in optimising exposures, as neonates have an increased risk of radiation induced malignancy compared to adults due to the high radiosensitivity of mitotic cells and their longer life expectancy. Another consideration in the frequent imaging of neonates, while in the SCBU, is that handling of the neonate should be minimised. Current clinical practice mainly involves positioning the cassette on the bed directly behind the neonate. However, lifting or moving the infant to position the cassette, can lead to hypoxia, bradycardia, cerebral haemorrhage and could cause accidental dislodgment of tubes, lines and probes. Additionally, medical and nursing issues include increased risk of cross infection and changes in the stable microenvironment of the incubator, e.g. humidity and temperature. Modern incubators incorporate an imaging tray under the bed to facilitate placement of the radiographic cassette without the need to disturb the infant. Paediatricians and nurses urge the use of the tray for the benefit of the neonate. One the other hand, great concerns form the radiographers were expressed, regarding increased dose and poor image quality due to greater attenuation of the beam, as well as for repeat exposures due to artifacts or misalignment. The current study was divided in three parts. The first objective of the study was to perform a survey of the doses encountered in two Special Care Baby Units, one at the University Hospital of Patras in Greece and the other one at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. The first part of this study was performed in Greece and an optimized radiographic protocol for film-screen was suggested according to neonatal birth weight. In the second part, realized in the UK, the use of the incubator imaging tray is investigated for positioning the CR cassette, with regards to detector dose, exposure index, image quality and radiation dose to patient. Part three is studying the effect of the new tissue radiosensitivity factors, published in the new report from the International Commission on Radiological Protection 2007, on the effective dose conversion coefficients in computed tomography examinations in paediatric patients.

Abstract:
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been established as one of the most prevalent methods for high data rate transmission through wireless channels. In an OFDM communication system, one of the fundamental and most computationally intensive parts is the computation of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The subject of this thesis is to investigate the use of alternative arithmetic representation systems for the implementation of FFT circuits. Typically, these circuits are implemented using linear fixed-point representations. In literature, implementations of the FFT using the Logarithmic Numbering System (LNS) have been proposed and significant gains in quantization errors, chip area and power consumption have been reported. The effectiveness of these proposals in the case of the FFT for OFDM systems is investigated. Focusing on the case of the 64-point FFT for an OFDM modem for an 802.11a wireless network, one of the most efficient architectures proposed is based on the concept of row-column FFT and presents a way of implementing the computation without using any digital (non-fixed input) multiplier. The most important feature of the LNS representation is the fact that multiplication operations turn to mere additions, thus there are significant implementation gains. On the downside though, addition in LNS is very expensive. Combining the aforementioned, it is shown that the implementation of the whole FFT computation in LNS is not a preferable solution. Although the row-column FFT architecture may offer high performance and low implementation cost, it presents a number of deficiencies mainly due to the fact that special purpose circuits are used to perform the multiplications with the complex constants (twiddle factors) that appear in the computation. In order to alleviate these deficiencies, it is proposed to use the LNS representation in some parts of the FFT circuit, thus forming a hybrid-representation system. In hybrid-representation systems two major issues are raised. The first one is how to define equivalence between the arithmetic representation systems used and the second one is related to the cost of the circuits required to perform the conversions between the numbers of the different arithmetic systems. Typically, the equivalence criterion used is mathematically defined and metrics like the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) or Average Relative Representation Error (ARRE) are commonly used. In this report, a less restrictive metric is used: two arithmetic representations are defined to be equal if the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the overall OFDM system is equal. Using this approach, it is shown that short word-length representations may be used and the conversions between the linear and logarithmic systems need not be very accurate. This results in great simplification of the conversion process and the respected circuits can be implemented with low cost. For comparison, two 64-point FFT systems have been implemented, one using a linear fixed-point 2’s complement representation and one using both linear and LNS representation. Without any differences in BER performance and circuit delay, the hybrid-representation system requires less chip area and consumes significantly lower power.

Abstract:
Three novel approaches that are based on a recent communication technique called time compression overlap-add (TC-OLA), are introduced into pulse compression (PC) radar systems to improve the radar waveform shaping and enhance radar performance. The first approach lays down a powerful framework for combining the TC-OLA technique into traditional PC radar system. The new TC-OLA-based radar obtained is compared with other radars, namely traditional linear frequency modulation (LFM), and wideband LFM which has the same processing gain under different background situations. The results show the superiority of the proposed radar over the others. The second approach combines a random phase noise signal with a selected radar signal to build a new radar system, SSLFM radar, that enjoys the low-probability of intercept property, and, therefore, has higher immunity against noise jamming techniques compared with other radar systems. The properly recovery of the transmitted signal, however, requires a synchronization system at the receiver side. In this dissertation, we propose three synchronization systems each having different pros and cons. The last approach takes the radar waveform design methodology in a different direction and proposes a novel framework to combine any number of radar signal and transmit them simultaneously. Instead of trying to achieve universality through waveform shaping optimization, we do so via pluralism. As a proof of concept, all the proposed radars have been implemented and tested on software-defined radar (SDR). The theoretical and the experimental results showed the superiority of all proposed radar systems. Since TC-OLA is fundamental to this work, we add a chapter to propose a new technique called downsample upsample shift add (DUSA) to address the limitations of the existing implementation of TC-OLA.
