Abstract:
The Six Sigma model provides various kinds of sustainability to companies in terms of quality enhancement, zero defect level, market share enhancement, optimal production level and financial returns. Multinational companies are more orientated toward implementation of Six Sigma than small scale locally held companies. Numerous larger companies have so far implemented Six Sigma including 3M, Caterpillar, Merrill Lynch, Bank of America, Amazon.com, DHL, SGL group, Dell, Ford Motor Company, DuPont, McGraw Hill Companies and HSBC group. Implementation of Six Sigma requires considerable cost and effort in terms of human resource training and reformulation of business processes. This study is an attempt to find what kind of sustainability motivates multinational companies to invest in Six Sigma. Sustainability identified includes social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability. With the aid of interviews, a constant comparison study is conducted in order to find the most prevalent type of sustainability offered by Six Sigma. A sample is drawn from multinational companies which have already implemented Six Sigma in their operations. The findings suggest that multinational companies implement Six Sigma in order to attain economic sustainability through various means such as market share, customer base, and social sustainability.

Abstract:
Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) are complex conditions characterized primarily by seizures associated with neurodevelopmental and motor deficits. Recent evidence supports sigma-1 receptor modulation in both neuroprotection and antiseizure activity, suggesting that sigma-1 receptors may play a role in the pathogenesis of DEEs, and that targeting this receptor has the potential to positively impact both seizures and non-seizure outcomes in these disorders. Recent studies have demonstrated that the antiseizure medication fenfluramine, a serotonin-releasing drug that also acts as a positive modulator of sigma-1 receptors, reduces seizures and improves everyday executive functions (behavior, emotions, cognition) in patients with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Here, we review the evidence for sigma-1 activity in reducing seizure frequency and promoting neuroprotection in the context of DEE pathophysiology and clinical presentation, using fenfluramine as a case example. Challenges and opportunities for future research include developing appropriate models for evaluating sigma-1 receptors in these syndromic epileptic conditions with multisystem involvement and complex clinical presentation.

Abstract:
The existence of two distinct sigma (σ) receptor subtypes was established in the early 1990s. Sigma-1 and sigma-2 receptors (S1Rs and S2Rs, respectively) were shown to possess distinct molecular size, anatomical distribution, and ligand discrimination. S2R is overexpressed in numerous human cancers, and has therapeutic potential for the imaging and treatment of certain tumours. In contrast, S1R is more broadly involved in a wide variety of central nervous system (CNS) diseases including motor disorders, memory deficits, depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, pain, drug addiction, and many more. Since the human S1R was cloned in 1996, numerous high affinity ligands with excellent selectivity for S1R have been developed. This review focuses on recent developments in the generation of structurally diverse S1R-selective ligands and novel therapeutic candidates targeting S1Rs.

Abstract:
AbstractHuman movement studies and analyses have been fundamental in many scientific domains, ranging from neuroscience to education, pattern recognition to robotics, health care to sports, and beyond. Previous speech motor models were proposed to understand how speech movement is produced and how the resulting speech varies when some parameters are changed. However, the inverse approach, in which the muscular response parameters and the subject’s age are derived from real continuous speech, is not possible with such models. Instead, in the handwriting field, the kinematic theory of rapid human movements and its associated Sigma-lognormal model have been applied successfully to obtain the muscular response parameters. This work presents a speech kinematics-based model that can be used to study, analyze, and reconstruct complex speech kinematics in a simplified manner. A method based on the kinematic theory of rapid human movements and its associated Sigma-lognormal model are applied to describe and to parameterize the asymptotic impulse response of the neuromuscular networks involved in speech as a response to a neuromotor command. The method used to carry out transformations from formants to a movement observation is also presented. Experiments carried out with the (English) VTR-TIMIT database and the (German) Saarbrucken Voice Database, including people of different ages, with and without laryngeal pathologies, corroborate the link between the extracted parameters and aging, on the one hand, and the proportion between the first and second formants required in applying the kinematic theory of rapid human movements, on the other. The results should drive innovative developments in the modeling and understanding of speech kinematics.

Abstract:
Sigma receptor antagonists diminish the effects of cocaine in behavioral assays, including conditioned place preference. Previous locomotor activity experiments in mice determined that the sigma receptor ligand YZ-185 (N-phenylpropyl-N′-(3-methoxyphenethyl)piperazine) enhanced cocaine-induced hyperactivity at a lower (0.1 μmol/kg) dose and dose-dependently attenuated cocaine-induced hyperactivity at higher (3.16–31.6 μmol/kg) doses. The present study investigated the effect of YZ-185 on cocaine’s conditioned-rewarding properties in mice. YZ-185 (0.1, 0.316, 3.16, and 31.6 μmol/kg) did not have intrinsic activity to produce conditioned place preference or aversion. A higher (31.6 μmol/kg) YZ-185 dose, but not lower (0.1–3.16 μmol/kg) YZ-185 doses, prevented the development of place preference to cocaine (66 μmol/kg). YZ-185 did not alter the expression of cocaine place preference. To further characterize YZ-185’s behavioral profile, its effects in the elevated zero maze and rotarod procedures were also determined; YZ-185 produced no significant change from baseline in either assay, indicating that the sigma receptors probed by YZ-185 do not regulate anxiety-like or coordinated motor skill behaviors. Overall, these results suggest that YZ-185 is a sigma receptor antagonist at the 31.6 μmol/kg dose and demonstrate that sigma receptors can mediate the development of the conditioned-rewarding properties of cocaine.

The research was conducted at PT. XYZ where there were defect problems in bed series products so that additional time is needed to repair a product. One way to make improvements and improve quality in a production process is the Six Sigma method with the stages of DMAIC. The results of the calculated average of DPMO values and Sigma Level have the result 58558.56 and 3.07 which are still not good because still far from 6 sigma. After that analyzing the root causes of defect product problems, then the priority problem is carried out using (RPN) where the highest value is at the assembly work station because the material that has been used up in the warehouse has an RPN of 405 so that it becomes a top priority for repairs. With the standardization and documentation, proposed improvements that have been given then the possible defects of Electric Lovina Bed 3 Motor will be reduced.

Thompson, Steven James. "Improving the performance of Six Sigma : a case study of the Six Sigma process at Ford Motor Company." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/134955.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the question, "Why is the performance of Six Sigma within The Ford Motor Company below that experienced in other companies, and what can be done to improve it?" The aim of the thesis was to make recommendations that would improve the performance of Six Sigma within the Ford Motor Company. Results from the literature were categorised according to headings found in the European Foundation for Quality Model (EFQM): strategy, people, process and leadership. The key factors identified from the literature review as being significant for a successful Six Sigma deployment were that projects were aligned to the strategy of the organisation, individuals were clear on their role and had appropriate skills, processes were well defined and understood and leadership team was committed to Six Sigma. The research started with a review of the results from two employee surveys. The first was given to Black Belts and asked questions concerning Six Sigma. The second was given to all the employees in the organisation. The survey data failed to identify the cause of lower than expected results, and so the investigation followed with a series of twelve interviews. When these also failed to identify the factor or factors responsible for deployment performance, the project database was reviewed. The Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control steps (DMAIC) were then analysed using Gardner’s Model of Process Maturity. The thesis concluded that the main influence driving Six Sigma performance was the low process maturity of the project selection and scoping processes and this gave rise to variable project performance. The thesis then presents material to improve project performance including a process map, a process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of the project selection and scoping process, a control plan that ensures that the projects are on track and a macro using Excel and Minitab that works within the Ford Motor Company system to provide automatic evaluation of projects.

Salimi, Pejwaak. "Quadrature error cancellation for micro-machined vibratory gyroscope embedded in high order electromechanical sigma delta modulator." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/361723/.

Full text
Abstract:
Vibratory micro-machined gyroscopes utilize Coriolis force to detect the rotation rate. Recently it has been proved that embedding the gyroscope in an electromechanical ΣΔ modulator (EMSDM), results in increased linearity, rate detection range, and immunity to fabrication variations. In addition, this architecture can be deployed as a ΣΔ modulator (SDM) analogue to digital converter (ADC), providing a digital bit stream that can be used directly by any digital signal processing system (e.g. micro-processors). Furthermore, recent research has proved that higher order EMSDMs proved to deliver better performance in terms of signal to noise ratio while retaining linearity, dynamic range, fabrication tolerance and bandwidth advantages. Furthermore, in the view of ADC performance, higher order SDMs achieve higher resolution performance which is a desired feature for an ADC. Considering all these advantages, there have been attempts to deploy this approach in designing micro-machined gyroscopes interface in form of low-pass and band-pass EMSDM in order to achieve detection of high angular rate motions and angular motions with faster variation (which requires higher band width). However, the fabrication process of vibratory micro machined gyroscopes just like any other micro fabrication process is prone to flaws and inaccuracies. One of these flaws in the case of vibratory gyroscopes is the root cause of a mechanical coupling that occurs between the excitation direction and detection direction. This coupling results in appearance of an error signal in the detection direction which is known as quadrature error. Existence of this mechanical error results in reduction of performance in this type of gyroscopes and most importantly it limits the dynamic range of the sensor. In this work, a novel interface is proposed that eliminates the quadrature error while retaining the advantages of EMSDM for micro-machined gyroscopes system. The approach is a combination of quadrature amplitude modulation technique which is quite mature in communication systems, time division modulation in digital systems and the fundamental theory of EMSDM. A system level model of the novel architecture has been developed by using Matlab and Simulink. The system level simulation of the novel interface indicates that attenuation of -80dB can be achieved for the quadrature error signal. Furthermore, circuit level simulation model has been developed using Orcad/Pspice, in order to verify the consistency of the system level simulation. Finally a prototype PCB has been built characterized to evaluate the practical system performance. The measurement results on the hardware implementation show that the quadrature error power spectral density is attenuated by -70dB. In another words, the quadrature error is attenuated by about 3 orders of magnitude in the hardware implementation prototype.

Abstract:

In current economic time where service business is booming, providing high quality and quick service to customers has become one important way to achieve business excellence by many world-class companies.GRUNDFOS Group is one of the leading pump manufacturers in the world. Although it is defined as a traditional industry, Grundfos implement modern concepts and technologies to make it everything but traditional in business management. Grundfos aim to develop, produce and sell highest quality pumps and booster systems to the world in order to create a healthy environment and bring up the living quality for human beings. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Grundfos provide an effective solution to an OEM customer who has a complaint about motor noise in the pump. Grundfos run a project of quality improvement for rusty bearing noise from the motor by using Six Sigma DMAIC approach. By applying the logic and the improving method from Six Sigma, Grundfos anticipate an excellent effectiveness in the working process, and therefore increase the company’s competitive edge in the business. The investigation shows that from the start, Grundfos define the issue of the complaint clearly through an understanding of customer voice and an analysis of feedback from the market. The issue is then transformed to a critical to quality (CTQ). Process mapping (SIPOC) and data from measuring system are used to verify the issue. By using analyzing tools for root cause analysis, the key input which really affects the process output is expected to be found. Based on the results from above analysis, an action to improve the heating temperature of motor stator is implemented with an aim to ensure the motor stators are totally dry and hardened in the lacquering process. This action solves the rusty issue completely. As a result the motor return rate drops from 114 units per year to 0 unit per year, which is a dramatic saving for Grundfos as they would have to pay a credit cost around NTD28 million and sales order around 6,000 units per year (NTD90 million) if this quality issue could not be resolved successfully. In order to prevent the same issue from happening again, Grundfos make a process management plan and use drawings to indicate all control points in the lacquering process.

Abstract:
Research within digital fluid power (DFP) transmissions is receiving an increased attention as an alternative to conventional transmission technologies. The use of DFP displacement machines entails a need for applicable control algorithms. However, the design and analysis of controllers for such digital systems are complicated by its non-smooth behavior. In this paper a control design approach for a digital displacement machine® is proposed and a performance analysis of a wind turbine using a DFP transmission is presented. The performance evaluation is based on a dynamic model of the transmission with a DFP motor, which has been combined with the NREL 5-MW reference wind turbine model. A classical variable speed control strategy for wind speeds below rated is proposed for the turbine, where the pump displacement is fixed and the digital motor displacement is varied for pressure control. The digital motor control strategy consists of a full stroke operation strategy, where a Delta-Sigma pulse density modulator is used to determine the chamber activation sequence. In the LQR-control design approach, the discrete behavior of the motor and Delta-Sigma modulator is described by a discrete linear time invariant model. Using full-field flow wind profiles as input, the design approach and control performance is verified by simulation in the dynamic model of the wind turbine featuring the DFP transmission. Additionally, the performance is compared to that of the conventional NREL reference turbine, transmission and controller.
