Abstract:
This book, included in the Oxford Guides series, is a concise guide to Henry Sidgwick’s masterpiece, The Methods of Ethics. The book is written for undergraduate students and interested general readers and designed to be read alongside Sidgwick’s text. Its principal aims are to help readers to navigate through the text, and to raise the most significant interpretive and philosophical issues about Sidgwick’s views and arguments. It highlights important connections between the work of Sidgwick and that of others in contemporary moral philosophy and in the history of moral philosophy. Particular attention is paid to his relations to predecessors he discusses, including Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill, and to G. E. Moore and W. D. Ross, his most celebrated successors in the British intuitionist tradition he revitalized. At the end of the first eight chapters there are brief suggestions for further reading. At the end of the final three chapters, when all relevant parts of the Methods have been discussed, there are more substantial overviews of the secondary literature on the aspects of Sidgwick’s work that have generated the most interest among his commentators: metaethics and moral epistemology; consequentialism versus deontology; and egoism and the dualism of practical reason.

James, Aaron. Constructivism, Intuitionism, and Ecumenism. Edited by Serena Olsaretti. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199645121.013.28.

Full text
Abstract:
Constructivism and intuitionism are often seen as opposed methods of justification in political philosophy. An “ecumenical” view sees them as different but unopposed: each style of reasoning can yield fundamental principles, for different questions of distributive justice, and we can rightly take up different questions, with different, equally valid, theoretical objectives, in hopes of cultivating a thousand blooming flowers. This chapter develops this position with special interest in Rawls’s constructivism, his treatment of reflective equilibrium, self-evidence, and “moral geometry,” and his evolving dialogue with the intuitionist Henry Sidgwick. Rawls’s main difference from Sidgwick lies in the way he frames the question of right or justice in the first instance. This brings out both the possibility and the attractions of the ecumenist conception in political philosophy.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how “the Hobbesian hypothesis” (the claim that everyone is better off in a state society with a private property system than they could reasonably expect to be in any society without either of those institutions) appeared in Nineteen-Century Political Theory. As in the Eighteen Century, disagreement about the truth of the hypothesis produced virtually no debate. G. W. F. Hegel, Frédéric Bastiat, and others asserted it with very little supporting evidence. Henry David Thoreau, Herbert Spencer, Henry George, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, John Robert Seeley, Henry Sidgwick, Henry Sumner Maine, and Peter Kropotkin all voiced various levels of scepticism, and some, especially Kropotkin, produced considerable evidence. Yet supporters went on asserting the hypothesis as if it were an unchallengeable and obvious truth.
