Russell, Laura M. "Thermal conductivity/diffusivity of SiC-Mullite and SiC-SiC composites." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40981.
Full textThe purposes of this study were to determine as a function of temperature the thermal diffusivity and/or thermal conductivity of SiC-Mullite and SiC-SiC, and to explain the observed behavior in terms of changes in temperature, microstructure, composition, and/or orientation.
Materials used in the SiC-Mullite study consisted of single crystal SiC whiskers (prepared from rice hulls or by the vapor-liquid-solid process) dispersed within a polycrystalline mullite matrix. During measurement of thermal diffusivity, the samples were heated to l500°C and cooled back to room temperature. No hysteresis occurred. However, both thermal diffusivity and conductivity exhibited maximum values at room temperatures, perpendicular to the hot pressing direction, at high volume percentages of SiC whiskers, and when VLS whiskers were employed.
The SiC-SiC samples consisted of a crossweave of polycrystalline SiC uÌ bers that were coated with phenolic resin and surrounded by a chemically-vapordeposited matrix of SiC. The two types of samples examined were prepared with different amounts of resin. The matrices of the high resin samples were found to be dominated by the presence of char. Samples were cycled to 1000, 1400, and l800°C; hysteresis occurred on some of the cycles. Thermal diffusivity was highest parallel to one set of fibers.
These results allow the qualitative tailoring of the heat flow properties of these ceramic composites, for particular applications, and set forth limitations on the use of the SiC-SiC composites at high temperatures.

Full textWe describe a development of a voltammetric method for determination of glyphosate in commercial formulations using sequential injection analysis to carry the sample to a flow cell adapted to the capillary of a mercury drop electrode. Glyphosate is batch-derivatized with nitrous acid in hydrochloric acid to produce N-nitroso glyphosate, which is electroactive. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.7 and 2.4 mg L-1, respectively. The method was applied to three formulations, obtaining results that differed from the value indicated by the manufacturer by -2.6, -0.8 and -28%. Next, the thesis describes the development of a sequential injection method to automate the fluorimetric determination of glyphosate based on a first step of oxidation to glycine by hypochlorite, followed by reaction with o-phthaldialdehyde in presence of 2-mercaptoethanol (OPA-MCE) in borate buffer (pH>9) to produce a fluorescent 1-(2´-hydroxyethylthio)-2-N-alkylisoindole. The proposed method exhibited a linear response for glyphosate concentrations between 0.25 and 25.0 µmol L-1, with LOD and LOQ of 0.08 and 0.25 µmol L-1, respectively. The sampling rate of the method was 18 samples per hour. The method was applied to study adsorption/desorption properties in a soil and in a sediment sample. Adsorption and desorption isotherms were properly fitted by Freundlich and Langmuir equations, leading to adsorption capacities of 1384 ± 26 and 295 ± 30 mg kg-1 for the soil and sediment samples, respectively. Determination of glyphosate and AMPA in water samples was performed by sequential injection chromatography (SIC) with fluorimetric detection by exploiting the same reactions with hypochlorite and OPA-MCE. The carrier solution plays a role of mobile phase, being composed of 25:75 (v v-1) methanol : 10 mmol L-1 phosphate buffer (pH 6.8). The chromatographic step enhanced the method selectivity. The sampling throughput was 6 analyzes per hour with LOD and LOQ of 0.14 and 0.42 µmol L-1 for AMPA and 0.11 and 0.33 µmol L-1 for glyphosate, respectively. Recovery tests in natural water samples enriched with 0.50 µmol L-1 in the compounds led to recovery rates from 82 to 140% for AMPA and 84 to 96% for glyphosate. We investigated the effect of the herbicide on cultivation of two species of marine microalgae - the Chlorophyta, Tetraselmis gracilis and the diatomaceous Phaeodactilum tricornutum. To achieve this goal, different concentrations of glyphosate (2 to 1000 mg L-1) were added to cultures growing in exponential phase. Doses between 2 and 50 mg L-1 caused a slight increase in algal growth compared to the control culture without glyphosate. The quantum yield of photosynthesis increased slightly in some days in the cultivation of P. tricornutum at low concentrations of glyphosate. The glyphosate concentration of 200 mg L-1 decreases the cell growth and caused a marked decline in the fluorescence quantum yield of photosynthesis. Profiles of aromatic amino acids, tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine differed in the algae

Full textResearches on the development on SiCf/SiC refractory composites for generation IV nuclear fuel cladding led the CEA to focus on the thermal behavior of these materials. In particular, knowingthe thermal properties is essential for their components design. Regarding the development of the sandwich" concept, whose complexity and geometry differ from the conventionally used at tubes, usual measurement methods are unsuitable. This PhD reports on the characterization and modeling of the thermal behavior of these structures. The first part concerns the identification of the global thermal parameters of the diferent layers of a"sandwich" sheath. To do so, a ash method is used and an experimental bench suitable for tubular geometries was developed. A new estimation method based on the combination of both collectedsignals in front and rear faces allows the identification of the thermal diffusivity of tubular composites using infrared thermography. The second part focuses on a virtual material approach, established todescribe the thermal behavior of a "sandwich" cladding, starting from the properties of the elementary components (bers and matrix). These properties, obtained using two different estimation methods, allows exploiting the measurements of two separate experiments based on infrared thermography. They are then used as data for the heat transfer modeling in these ducts. Confrontations betweenexperimental measurements and numerical results finally allow gaining insight into the in uence ofthe different key parameters governing the heat transfer

Full textThe aim of this research was to study the mechanical behaviour of elementary ceramic composite materiels. Each composite is constituted of a SiC based Nicalon fibre coated with a ß-SiC "matrix" obtained by low-pressure chemical vapour deposition. The influence of a prior surface treatment of the fibres (deposition of a thin film of pyrolitic carbon) has also been investigated. A tension test has been developed for these systems to determine their mechanical characteristics stress-strain curves, load transfer, friction, modulus, damage assement. The SiC/ /SiC composites, which hace no carbon interphase, exhibit a brittle behaviour: a single crack initiates in the matrix and propagates through the fibre. The SiC/C/SiC composites which contains a carbon interphase exhibit a non-linear mechanical behaviour as in the case of unidirectional ceramic composites multiple fracture occurs in the matrix with deviation of cracks at the matrix/fibre interface. For these composites, the average friction stress at the interface could be determine from the measured extraction work. It could be shown, in some cases, that the friction stress is a fonction of the matrix volume fraction, indicating a fretting effect resulting from thermal residual stress. In several cases, "stick-slip" phenoma during the extraction of the fibre could be recorded. The approach developed in this work permits permits to characterize the dynamic behavior of these elementary composites and could be applied for example to test the effect of different surface treatments

The creep data were also modeled using the representations such as Monkmon-Grant and Larsen-Miller equations. A modified Monkman-Grant equation was used to model the stratification of the creep strain rate data with temperature. A finite element model based on the plasticity theory was developed to simulate the quasi-static cyclic behavior of the material. Though the loading behavior of CMCs can be modeled using the bilinear or multilinear kinematic hardening plasticity models, the unloading behavior as predicted by the models is entirely different from the experimentally observed behavior. Hence, these models were modified to correctly predict the stress-strain behavior. The model, which was input via a user defined subroutine into the ANSYS finite element program uses the concept of state or internal variables to define the unloading portion of the stress-strain curve. The results were compared with the test data and they show very good agreement. The model was then used to predict the stress-strain response of a plate with a notch. The results from the analysis were compared with the experimental data and they show good agreement if average values of strains are considered.

The semiconductor boron phosphide (BP) has many outstanding features making it attractive for developing various electronic devices, including neutron detectors. In order to improve the efficiency of these devices, BP must have high crystal quality along with the best possible electrical properties. This research is focused on growing high quality crystalline BP films on a variety of superior substrates like AIN, 4H-SiC, 3C-SiC and ZrB₂ by chemical vapor deposition. In particular, the influence of various parameters such as temperature, reactant flow rates, and substrate type and its crystalline orientation on the properties of BP films were studied in detail. Twin-free BP films were produced by depositing on off-axis 4H-SiC(0001) substrate tilted 4° toward [1-100] and crystal symmetry matched zincblende 3C-SiC. BP crystalline quality improved at higher deposition temperature (1200°C) when deposited on AlN, 4H-SiC, whereas increased strain in 3C-SiC and increased boron segregation in ZrB₂ at higher temperatures limited the best deposition temperature to below 1200°C. In addition, higher flow ratios of PH₃ to B₂H₆ resulted in smoother films and improved quality of BP on all substrates. The FWHM of the Raman peak (6.1 cm⁻¹), XRD BP(111) peak FWHM (0.18°) and peak ratios of BP(111)/(200) = 5157 and BP(111)/(220) = 7226 measured on AlN/sapphire were the best values reported in the literature for BP epitaxial films. The undoped films on AlN/sapphire were n-type with a highest electron mobility of 37.8 cm²/V·s and a lowest carrier concentration of 3.15x1018 cm⁻ᶟ. Raman imaging had lower values of FWHM (4.8 cm⁻¹) and a standard deviation (0.56 cm⁻¹) for BP films on AlN/sapphire compared to 4H-SiC, 3C-SiC substrates. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed residual tensile strain in BP on 4H-SiC, 3C-SiC, ZrB₂/4H-SiC, bulk AlN substrates while compressive strain was evident on AlN/sapphire and bulk ZrB₂ substrates. Among the substrates studied, AlN/sapphire proved to be the best choice for BP epitaxy, even though it did not eliminate rotational twinning in BP. The substrates investigated in this work were found to be viable for BP epitaxy and show promising potential for further enhancement of BP properties.
